The origins of the Christmas traditions are the most fascinating of any holiday. All our favorite activities can be traced (追溯) back to specific points in history, and knowing how these things came about just makes celebrating Christmas much more wonderful.
The original Nicholas was born in 280 AD in the small country of Lycia, which is now part of modern Turkey. Nicholas became first a priest (牧师) and then a bishop (主教) in the early Christian church. The first paintings of him show Nicholas wearing the clothes of a Christian bishop—red decorated with white. When we see Santa's suit today, we're still seeing the two kinds of colors.
Nicholas became famous for gift giving. In the early fourth century, a legend began to spread about Nicholas coming at night to the home of three poor girls who did not have money and therefore could not get married. While the girls slept, Nicholas left gold coins in their stockings, which were drying by the fire. That's how the tradition of Santa filling stockings got its start.
In 1841, Santa first appeared at a department store in Philadelphia. This Santa tried to climb down a chimney to impress the children who were watching, but he got stuck halfway down.In 1890, department store Santas began appearing all over America, especially on the East Coast around Boston. Parents in other countries joined together and hired passenger trains to take their families to see these Santas.
At the same time, Ralph E. Morris of the New England Telephone Company suggested that strings of lights be hung on Christmas trees. After all, lights would be much safer than candles. Our modern day image of Santa as a fat man is based on ads of the Coca Cola company in the 1930s. Artist Hans Sundblom used a retired salesman named Les Prentice as his model.

A. To prove that Nicholas used to be a rich man.
B. To tell of the origin of Santa filling stockings.
C. To show Christmas was set up mainly for the poor.
D. To describe a famous story in the early fourth century.
7.What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A. Santa didn't become popular until the year 1890.
B. Candles have never been used on Christmas trees.
C. The Coca Cola company designed the image of Santa.
D. Santa began giving gifts by climbing down chimneys in 1841.

A month before my first marathon, one of my ankles was injured and this meant not running for two weeks, leaving me only two weeks to train. Yet, I was determined to go ahead.
I remember back to my 7th year in school. In my first P.E. class, the teacher required us to run laps and then hit a softball. I didn’t do either well. He later informed me that I was “not athletic”.
The idea that I was “not athletic” stuck with me for years. When I started running in my 30s, I realized running was a battle against myself, not about competition or whether or not I was athletic. It was all about the battle against my own body and mind. A test of wills!
The night before my marathon, I dreamt that I couldn’t even find the finish line. I woke up sweating and nervous, but ready to prove something to myself.
Shortly after crossing the start line, my shoe laces(鞋带)became untied. So I stopped to readjust. Not the start I wanted!
At mile 3, I passed a sign: “GO FOR IT, RUNNERS!”
By mile 17, I became out of breath and the once injured ankle hurt badly. Despite the pain, I stayed the course walking a bit and then running again.
By mile 21, I was starving!
As I approached mile 23, I could see my wife waving a sign. She is my biggest fan. She never minded the alarm clock sounding at 4 a.m. or questioned my expenses on running.
I was one of the final runners to finish. But I finished! And I got a medal. In fact, I got the same medal as the one that the guy who came in first place had.
Determined to be myself, move forward, free of shame and worldly labels(世俗标签), I can now call myself a “marathon winner”.

10. How was the author’s first marathon
A. He made it. B. He quit halfway.
C. He got the first prize. D. He walked to the end.
11. What does the story mainly tell us
A. A man owes his success to his family support.
B. A winner is one with a great effort of will.
C. Failure is the mother of success.
D. One is never too old to learn.

The excitement about Thanksgiving was stronger and stronger. Grandma arrived with a homemade pecan(核桃) pie. Dad was searching for his electric cutting knife. Mama was in the kitchen singing a song. Little baby Lonnie jumped up and down. Dad smelled the air and sighed. My big brother, Slim, who was anything but slim, sneaked off to his room with a slice of the pecan pie. Even our dog Fido was wagging his tail.
Having set a pretty table, Mama looked up, smiling. "Help me carry in the food," she said. Slim, who had come out of his room by this time, went racing into the kitchen "I'll get it! Ill get it!" The rest of us piled in behind him, everyone grabbing a dish. Then we watched Dad carry in the biggest, brownest, best-smelling turkey we had ever seen with Mama's hand under the plate, just in case. Together they lowered the turkey to its place at the table
It was the tradition in our family to think of something for which we were most thankful. We all ran to the table yelling something like “I'm thankful for school being out” or “I'm thankful for pecan pie!" All eyes were on that big turkey as we took our seats.
Yes, everything was perfect except for one thing. On that special day, it was Dad who sat at the head of the table and cut the turkey. It was an honor that he had eagerly expected for days. Mama always called Dad a clumsy ox(笨牛). He frequently fell over his own two feet, and he could drop just about anything.
We eased back when Dad tested the electric cutting knife in the air. Dad went to work on the white meat first with surprisingly few problems. Slice after slice landed neatly on the plate with thick gravy (肉汁). Dad leaned forward and grabbed the end of the left turkey leg and cut it off, placing it whole on the plate. His oily fingers shone brightly in the light of the chandelier (大吊灯), and Mama waved her napkin. "I’m all right, Mama," he said. “I'm all right."
注意:1.续写的短文词数应为150个左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
But when Dad pulled back the right turkey leg, it slipped from his oily fingers. As Lonnie yelled, we found a turkey leg was missing.

第二节(满分25分)
But when Dad pulled back the right turkey leg, it slipped from his oily fingers. It sprank back to his direction. As Dad jumped backward to avoid it, he fell over and lost his balance. So nervous was he that he dropped the electric carving knife. Accidentally, his waving hand swept the turkey into the air. Fortunately, he was just in time to catch the falling turkey. Mama quickly pulled out the carving knife and placed it on the table.“Turkey leg! Turkey leg!” screamed Lonnie, bouncing and kicking in his seat.
As Lonnie yelled, we found a turkey leg was missing. We searched around the room, under the table, but in vain. We looked at Fido, who was standing at the gate licking his lips. Surprisingly, little Lonnie still yelled and kicked in his seat, with his eyes staring at something upward. We followed his eyes' direction. There, lying on the top of chandelier was the missing turkey leg.We all jumped to our feet, dancing and screaming with joy. The room was filled with our happy laughter and our thanks for the returning turkey leg.
