"Can we look at the school supplies while we're here " my daughter, Julia, asked during a trip to the store. My favorite school-supply item is the daily planner because I struggle with organisation. I always dream that the perfect planner will somehow cure me of my delay(拖延) and turn my life into a paradise(乐园) of order and productivity.
The list of habits I wanted to develop was long. Exercising regularly. Drinking more water. Clearing a junk drawer or closet each week. Reading more books and watching less TV. Delaying less on work deadlines. Spending more time with each of my kids and reaching out to family and friends more often. Making special meals, and doing other things to make my loved ones feel loved.
Over the next few days, I was able to check off several items on my habit tracker. I was pleased with the progress, but I hadn't done much with the habits intended to improve my relationships with others. I tried to put more focus on those habits.
One morning, I opened my planner and realized that it was Julia's. The first task was "Write in my gratitude(感恩) journal." The second one was "Do something nice for someone else." Julia was a busy college student. How did she find time to keep a journal and do random acts of kindness
When I asked her about it, she said, "Those two habits go together. Writing in my gratitude journal makes me want to do nice things for other people."
"What a wonderful thing to do!" I said, "I love that your gratitude fuels your acts of kindness." I took a plain notebook and wrote, "I'm thankful for..." I prepared my husband's favorite dinner, sent an encouraging text to a friend, and baked another batch of cookies for Julia to share with her friends.

If you're in the market for a new food or water dish for your cat, you might want to check out Free the Ocean's Bamboo Cat Bowls. These are made of bamboo fibers and rice husks(稻壳) and are more eco-friendly than traditional plastic.
The presence of bamboo—used as a renewable filler—is part of what makes the bowl greener. Bamboo, which is technically a grass, grows 30% faster than trees and as much as 1.5 inches per hour! Not surprisingly, it produces 30% more oxygen and absorbs 35% more carbon dioxide than trees, according to Mimi Ausland, founder of Free the Ocean. "It's a cut-and-come-again plant, which means it can be cropped without disrupting the root ball, reducing carbon giving off when it's harvested."
Rice husk is a byproduct of rice production that is a challenge to farmers because it is hard to break down and of no great value. Its use as a filler provides a purpose for an otherwise useless material and, along with the bamboo.
Ausland said, "Plastic cat dishes harbor bacteria(细菌), which can put your cat's health at risk. Even if pet owners clean them regularly, they cannot be fully sanitized. Plastic bowls are the main cause of cat diseases."
However, the bamboo cat bowl will not leach(渗入) harmful chemicals into your pet's water the way that traditional plastic can and it is naturally free of bacteria.
Cats will like the bowls, as they have low edges. With an easy-to-pick-up handle, they come in four colors.
One customer commented, "My cats prefer these cat food bowls just like me. The cats like the low lip that makes it easy to eat out of. And the fact that they're made of bamboo and that buying them makes a difference to the environment is amazing! And it is easy to wash in the dishwasher."

When most people think of drones(无人机), they think of technology and fun. Safe to say, few people would think about farming. However, a group of students from York College of Pennsylvania have been building a drone that will not only help local farmers but the environment, as well.
Samantha Gotwalt and Blayde Reich, two senior Mechanical Engineering majors at York College in the group, both found the work to be quite fascinating. According to Samantha, the idea came from a York College professor, who has worked with drones, and wanted to get students involved with a project beneficial to the community. "We really want to help farming and agriculture. It's super-important to America and our economy," Blayde says. "We want to help the smaller farmers, and one of the benefits is not having to spend their money on fertilizer and pesticides(杀虫剂)."
The idea is to design and build a drone that will take video imagery of the fields to determme what is needed to produce the best crop, while saving money and sparing the environment by reducing pollutants in the runoff water. Ideally, that data gained will help the farmers better determine what chemicals they need—and what they don't.
However, finding the right equipment for the project was a challenge, starting with what drone the team would design for this particular usage. Samantha says she researched durability and control of drones to help make the proper determination.
"We are flying over the field and we want to have enough efficiency and go relatively slow enough that our pictures turn out well and fly low enough that it is not using up all of its power," she says. "The fields are a couple hundred acres, so you need your drone to be able to fly the length of that field."
Blayde says the team continues to learn a great deal of information that will help the farmers and the environment.
32. Why do students from York College of Pennsylvania build the drone
A. To enrich students' amusement activities.
B. To help farming and agriculture.
C. To confirm the students' abilities.
D. To obtain more information about the drone.
33. What particular usage is the drone designed for
A. Measuring the areas of the fields. B. Assisting to monitor the state of crops.
C. Spreading proper quantities of pesticides. D. Helping to determine the chemicals needed.
34. What technical issue of the drone shall be solved
A. Its camera version. B. Its durability and control.
C. Its flying ability. D. Its further service.
35. What can best describe the students
A. Responsible and creative. B. Experienced and generous.
C. Brilliant and grateful. D. Reliable and realistic.

Ways to Boost Your Energy
Are you sleepy as the afternoon wears on When low energy drags you down, don't look to a candy bar, a cup of coffee, or an energy drink for a lift. The sugar and caffeine might give you an immediate pick-me-up, but after that quick high wears off, you'll crash and feel even more tired. 36 Here are some ways.
Let the sunshine in.
Research suggests that just a few minutes of walking outside on a warm, clear day may enhance mood, memory, and the ability to absorb new information. Going outside can even improve your self-esteem. 37
Chew a piece of sugar-free gum.
It's not exactly clear why, but numerous studies have shown that chewing gum increases attentiveness. Even before science confirmed it, during World War I, American soldiers were issued gum to help them focus.
38
When you're stressed, it's natural to breathe shallowly, which can decrease the amount of oxygen that reaches cells. To counteract that, try breathing in through your nose for four seconds, holding your breath for four seconds, and then slowly breathing out for four seconds.
Have a drink of water.
You don't necessarily have to follow the "eight glasses a day" rule. But you do want to drink enough water to keep your body functioning well. 39 The walk there will also help you wake up. Belt out your favorite tune.
40 So grab a hairbrush, put on your favorite song, and sing away. If you're at work and don't want to face others' puzzled stares, you might want to save your beautiful voice for the car.
A. Have a bite.
B. Take a few deep breaths.
C. Singing reduces levels of stress in your body.
D. If you really can't get out, at least open the shades.
E. What you need is a lasting solution to helping you feel refreshed.
F. Try to get to the fridge or water cooler for a refill every few hours.
G. Expose yourself to natural sunlight, especially in the early morning.

My knees started shaking, yet my body froze. It felt as though my soul departed my body and I had no control over it. Anxiously, I looked through the roster(名单) posted on the wall of the locker room. My heart was beating harder and harder as I slowly saw all my friends' names on that list but could not find mine. At that moment, I froze. I just could not accept that all my friends were on the basketball team while I was not.
I was so convinced there was a mistake that I went and found the coach. "Hey, coach, are you sure that the roster you posted is correct " I asked anxiously, dreading(担心) his answer.
"Yes, the names on the list are finalised. Sorry if you did not make it this year. There is always next year," the coach replied.
I could feel the hot, bitter tears filling my eyes, and I ran out of the room as fast as I could. Trying to forget about the situation, I headed over to the cafeteria to buy some food. I felt dead inside, like nothing mattered. Walking was such a burden that it felt as if I had a 100-pound weight tied to my backpack. My mind was also blank for the rest of the school day. Everything my teachers said went in one ear and out the other.
After school, as I walked to the parking lot to get picked up, I saw all my friends gathered near the back of the lot, celebrating and joking around. I detoured around the side of the school to avoid them, trying not to think about being the only one in our friend group failing to make the team.
I saw my father's red car pull up near the school lot. I walked up to the car and got in. He smiled at me, turned on the radio, and started driving home. And soon he noticed my gloomy face, and asked me what was wrong. "Nothing. Well, it's just that all my friends made the school team. Everyone! Except me…" I stammered(口吃). "Well, what are you going to do about it Are you just going to sit there and wait " he asked. Surprised, I didn't know what to say.

It is universally acknowledged that respecting the elderly is a traditional Chinese culture. To carry forward our tradition and also help the elderly, our English club launched an activity at the nursing home last Saturday. As soon as we got there early in the morning. we gave them our gifts and did some cleaning for the elderly. What a great day

听第10段材料, 回答第18至20题。
(W:) Sweetest Day is always the third Saturday in October. This holiday is much more important in some regions than in others. Detroit, Cleveland and Buffalo are the biggest Sweetest Day cities. But this holiday is gaining in popularity every year throughout the country. Sweetest Day is celebrated to make someone happy. It is an occasion which offers an opportunity to remember not only the sick, aged, and orphaned, but also friends and relatives. Over 60 years ago, a Cleveland man, believing that the city's homeless children and patients too often felt forgotten, came up with an idea of showing them that they were not. He did this by the distribution of small gifts. With the help of his friends and neighbors, he distributed them on a Saturday in October. In the years that followed, other residents began to participate in the event, which came to be called "Sweetest Day". Soon the idea began spreading to other cities all over the country.
