When Kyle Jauregui recently went to pick up his younger sister’s birthday cake, he met with a bittersweet surprise.
On arriving at the baker’s, he learnt that Madison’s cake had already been paid for—by a complete stranger. It was a touching act of kindness, but, as it turned out, not a random(随机的)one. The cake had been paid for by a lady known simply as “McKenna’s mum” —as a mother who lost her daughter, and for a heartbreaking reason.
While Madison was set to celebrate turning 11, McKenna Jodell Fox would have turned ten on the same day. McKenna was only nine months old in 2008, when she was crushed(砸到) by a falling TV set as her family prepared to move house.
It’s a painful accident for her mum, but one she has transformed into something positive. The cake she bought was accompanied by a card which read as follows:
“Dear Birthday Girl Family, In honour of my daughter’s 10th birthday, I have chosen your birthday cake to pay for. Each year I do this random act of kindness because I am unable to buy my daughter a cake of her own. Today is her big double-digit birthday. Please enjoy your day.”
By Kyle’s own admission, the whole family was left speechless. “We just want to say thank you to McKenna’s mom,” he wrote, “and wish McKenna a happy birthday. There’s still good in this world.”
24.What do we know about the birthday cake
A.It tasted bittersweet. B.It was paid by McKenna’s mum.
C.It made the family heart-broken. D.It was free of charge.
25.Who died according to the passage
A.Kyle Jauregui. B.Madison. C.McKenna Jodell Fox. D.McKenna’s mum.
26.Which of the following can best describe McKenna’s mum
A.Warm-hearted and cheerful. B.Strong-willed but depressed.
C.Broken-hearted but generous. D.Kind-hearted and positive.
27.Which of the following would be the best title for the text
A.A Painful Accident B.A Speechless Birthday
C.One Birthday Cake for Two Girls D.World Full of Surprises
C
How clever can a computer be Maybe you can get the answer after reading the following passage about a newly-developed US computer program called Smarter Child.
If you ran into Smarter Child online, you would be surprised at this kid’s huge memory(记忆). It can remember many facts. For example, Smarter Child knows every baseball player in every team this season and the weather in every city across the US. He also knows every word in the dictionary. However, if you ask Smarter Child other private questions, you will get strange answers. A question about Smarter Child’s age returns, “I’ll be older than you after further study!”, and asking where he lives, you will get, “In a clean room in a high-tech building in California.”
Smarter Child uses the huge information on the World Wide Web as his memory bank. To answer questions about spelling, for example, Smarter Child goes to www.ahdictionary. com. For the weather, he visits www.. He turns to www.the- for scientists and www. for a fantastic movie.
Some scientists believe that by joining many systems of the Internet, an Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the combined (结合的) knowledge of, say, Albert Einstein, Richard Nixon and Britney Spears could be born. However, Smarter Child has difficulty in discerning whether a behavior is right or wrong, which is clear to any young child. If he wants to think and learn without any help from the programmers like boy-computer David in the movie Artificial Intelligence (AI), he must solve two problems.
The first is that computers find it difficult to read web pages because the files are sorted in different ways. That’s why programmers need to tell Smarter Child where to look for the weather. It would be a much more difficult task to let him find it by himself. Another problem is that while Smarter Child can deal with information more exactly and faster than any human, he needs programmers to make better systems that allow machines to solve problems of common sense, which is a huge challenge.
28.What may be unknown to Smarter Child
A.His age. B.The weather in New York.
C.A word in the dictionary. D.A player’s name of the Boston Redsox.
29.Which website can Smarter Child visit to answer the questions about scientists
A.www. B.www.
C.www.the- D.www.ahdictionary.com
30.What does the underlined word “discerning” in Paragraph 4 mean
A.Preventing. B.Copying. C.Inventing. D.Telling.
31.How is boy-computer David different from Smarter Child
A.He has a huge memory. B.He can think and learn independently.
C.He can make a weather forecast. D.He deals with information fast.
D
While Ellard Hunting and fellow researchers were out studying the weather at a field station in England, they noticed something unexpected on their instruments. Though there was no storm coming, the scientists’ electric field monitors recorded a strange increase in atmospheric electric charge(电荷).
Nearby, honeybees that lived in on-site hives were swarming (蜂拥) as they tried to find a new home. When the team took a closer look at their data, they discovered that the swarming honeybees had created an atmospheric electric charge. The researchers shared more details about their findings in the journal Science.
“This is the first report of biology as a source of space charge.” says Hunting, a biophysicist at the University of Bristol in England. Scientists had known that individual bees carry a small charge while flying through the air, caused by the friction of their body parts against the air and each other. It’s similar to how rubbing a balloon on a piece of cloth creates static electricity(静电). Scientists believe a bee’s charge helps pollen (花粉) stick to it and signals to other bees which flowers have already been visited. But until now, researchers had never recorded such a high voltage (电压)among swarming honeybees.
In terms of electricity generation, a bee swarm’s charge isn’t so impressive: It would take about 50 billion bees to power an LED light. But compared to the charges produced by common weather events, the bees’ charge density was six times greater than an electrified dust storm and eight times greater than a thunderstorm cloud.
Scientists hope to continue exploring how biology influences physics and are curious to know if something similar is happening with other wildlife, such as birds and bats.
32.What were the researchers doing when something unexpected on their instruments happened
A.Studying weather events. B.Testing their instruments.
C.Recording insects’ behavior. D.Looking for honeybees’ new home.
33.What’s the function of a bee’s charge
A.To help the bee fly fast. B.To signal to other bees.
C.To find pollen more easily. D.To avoid losing their way.
34.What will the scientists continue to study next
A.The wide application of biology. B.Measures to protect birds and bats.
C.The influences of dust storms on wildlife. D.Whether other wildlife can produce electric charge.
35.Where is the text from
A.A novel. B.A fiction. C.A magazine. D.A leaflet.
第二节 (共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Although a gym membership can be nice, you don’t have to have one to get into great shape! All you need is a little bit of time and space at home for yourself. 36
Spend 5 to 10 minutes warming up before every workout. 37 Try jumping jacks, leg or arm circles, or even dancing. Just get your blood pumping. Do a progressive aerobic activity that uses the same muscles you want to work out. For instance, slowly jog if you are going for a longer run.
38 Strength training, also called resistance training, makes you stronger and builds endurance. Try to do exercises that work a lot of muscles and add weight to increase your resistance. This helps you do a harder workout every time you exercise.
39 You might be eager to just stop your workout when you’ve finished your last set of activity, but take a few minutes to do low-intensity exercises that lower your heart rate. You might drop your run into a walk or slow down your cycling, for instance.
Set achievable goals that you can break into smaller tasks. It’s one thing to say you want to get fit, but that means something different for everyone. 40 It should be specific, realistic, and meaningful. Then, break down each goal into small, actionable steps so it feels like you’re making progress regularly.
A.Not sure what to do
B.Want to build muscle without buying equipment
C.Do strength training twice a week to build muscle.
D.If you’re struggling to fit in workout time, don’t worry.
E.Spend five to ten minutes cooling down after each workout.
F.Figure out what you plan to achieve and make that your goal.
G.But before everything, you need to create an at-home fitness routine.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was the middle of winter some 30 years ago. I was a young father with three little children depending on me. My college education, however, wasn’t helping me to find a good job in our depressed area. My work as a teacher had dried up and now I was working in a saw mill (锯木厂) for just above the minimum wage(工资).
As I got ready to go to work I wrapped band-aids(创可贴) around my fingers and put more in my pockets. Cutting and piling wood for 8 hours a day had caused my fingers to split(裂口) and bleed at their tips in the cold, dry, winter air. Then I walked down to my car in the snow and hoped it would star.
That day at work was harder than normal. The machines kept breaking down. And we had to rush to catch back up as the wood piled up. On top of it all the heaters in the building weren’t working and we could see our breath as we spent hours chopping, piling, carrying, and packaging the hard wood flooring to be shipped out.
When the work day finally ended, I walked tiredly toward the time clock, took off my work gloves and inspected my aching fingers. The splits were worse than ever and I had bled through the band-aids again. I tried to straighten out but my bad back cramped(绞痛) up as I did. I started my car and drove back home. I looked at the snow and blinked back tears. I wondered how long I could keep doing this, if things would ever get any better, and why life was so hard.
I tried to put a smile on my face as I opened my front door, but instead one appeared naturally. My daughter ran up to me, yelling “Daddy”, and wrapped her little arms around my neck. I lifted her up and my heart exploded with love.
