I was driving when I received a new email. Filled with expectation, I pulled over and eagerly opened it. My emotions quickly changed as I learned, for the sixth and final time, that I had been refused a promotion to full professor. I was sad that the place I worked in didn’t seem to value what I brought to the table.
When I told my family that news at night, my children offered a surprising response. They were excited to see what I was going to do next, they said. They clearly knew long before I did that losing my application for a promotion would turn out to be the best thing that could have happened for me.
To my surprise, having a final answer brought a welcome sense of closure. Once it was all over, I realized how tiring the process had been. For 15 months, I had spent hours every day trying to prove my worth to my university. I was underweight. My self-worth was at an all-time low. I just wanted to regain my fitness and happiness.
I wrote a letter of resignation (辞职) — but instead of sending it, I saved it on my desktop, ready to attach it to an email at any moment. Because I love working in academic circles too much to quietly quit, I decided to carry on in my existing position for a while but put my own values first. I began to say no to work that wasn’t personally rewarding so I would have more time to spend with my children, exercise, eat well, and sleep more. I disconnected from people in my life who are against my values, and developed my relationships with those who bring out the best in me.
As my mental health improved, I rethought about my institution and concluded it was no longer serving me well. A month after that email, I found myself in the car again, experiencing another career-defining moment. This time the email brought a job offer with a promotion to full professor and more salaries from a famous university.
4. What’s the children’s attitude to the author’s news
A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. C. Positive. D. Unclear.
5. What did the author do after being rejected
A. He posted a letter of resignation immediately.
B He prepared for the next application.
C He turned to his friends for more help.
D. He focused more on personal health and joy.
6. Which word can best describe the author
A. Unadaptable. B. Flexible. C. Imaginative. D. Generous.
7. What lesson can be learned from the author’s experience
A. Hard work will pay off. B. Experience must be bought.
C. He who does not advance loses ground. D. Misfortune may be an actual good turn.

More than ten years after introducing “Google Glass”, Alphabet Inc. has created a new kind of smart eyeglasses. The company says the wearable computer device can translate different languages in real time.
A working model of the yet-unnamed device was presented to the public last month during the yearly Google conference. Google did not say when the glasses might go on sale to the public.
The previous Google Glass device included a wearable camera that could film what the wearers saw. That caused widespread privacy concerns. The camera element also gave Google Glass a kind of science-fiction look. The latest device looks more similar to traditional glasses.
A brief demonstration of the new eyeglasses described its translation ability, but did not provide additional details. The company also did not say whether the new device would be equipped with a camera. A demonstration explained that a person, wearing the glasses and talking with someone who speaks a different language, can see the spoken words in their own language. The description showed translations including English, Mandarin, Spanish and American Sign Language.
The new device is one of several products shared at the conference that are currently in development. The company says the products aim to better connect Google services with activities happening in the real world. This includes company offerings for searching and viewing maps, as well as other services using the latest developments in artificial intelligence (AI).
Eddie Chung, a director of product management at Google, spoke to developers about the new eyeglasses. “What we’re working on is technology that enables us to break down language barriers, taking years of research in Google Translate and bringing that to glasses,” he said. “Apart from breaking down language barriers, another use of these translating glasses is enabling communication with people who are deaf or hard of hearing. While these glasses might not be a revolutionary product like Google Glass, they could provide a relatively simple solution to a real-world problem.”
8. What can we learn about the latest smart eyeglasses
A. They will be equipped with a camera.
B. They will appear on the market next year.
C. They can help users communicate easily.
D. They have a kind of science-fiction look.
9. What’s the purpose of this text
A. To share a wearable computer device on sale.
B. To introduce a new product in development.
C. To advertise the smart eyeglasses for sale.
D. To show the development of Google Glass Device.
10. Who will use the new smart eyeglasses probably
A. A Japanese who will talk with some Frenchmen.
B. Professors who research on native languages.
C. Tourists who search and view maps in Germany.
D. An American deaf boy who will listen to a speech.
11. What’s Eddie Chung’s attitude towards the new eyeglasses.
A. Favorable. B. Doubtful. C. Opposed. D. Disappointed.

Chemicals taken from sawdust (锯屑) and water can knock out more than 99 percent of some disease-causing microbes (微生物). That makes the sawdust mix a potential alternative to current microbe-killing chemicals.
Many disinfectants (消毒剂) used today can harm the environment. They form poisonous by-products when they get washed. Some potentially greener disinfectants exist. They rely on a chemical called “phenol (苯酚)”. But these cleaners can be costly and take a lot of energy to make.
Shicheng Zhang went searching for a better option. He’s an environmental engineer at Fudan University in Shanghai, China. Wood contains many molecules (分子) that look like phenol. So Zhang wondered if microbe-killing chemicals could be obtained from sawdust through a low-cost and low-energy process.
He and his fellow researchers cooked mixtures of water and sawdust for one hour. They heated this sawdust soup under pressure, and then filtered it. Later, they tested how well the liquid killed off microbes. This liquid wiped out E.coli bacteria—microbes that can cause food poisoning. The liquid also killed anthrax bacteria. These microbes cause dangerous infections. What’s more, the disinfectant stopped flu viruses from being infectious.
The researchers also added different amounts of water to the sawdust soup. That let them test how concentrated it had to be to knock out microbes. Depending on its concentration, the mix could kill more than 99 percent of the microbes.
Looking at killed microbes under a microscope revealed some of the ways the sawdust mix kills. The disinfectant damaged the microbes’ cell walls. It also may have messed with the microbes’ proteins and DNA.
Zhang and his fellow researchers didn’t stop at a sawdust disinfectant. They made disinfectants from other plant materials, too. Some of these started as bamboo powder. Others were made using rice plant. Plant materials that are richer in molecules that release phenol-like compounds are best at killing microbes. One example is corn straw.
12. What may be an advantage of Zhang’s sawdust disinfectant over existing ones
A. Being safer and more effective.
B. Being environment-friendly and less expensive.
C. Being less expensive and having more lasting effect.
D. Being more effective and having more lasting effect.
13. What gave Zhang the idea of the sawdust disinfectant
A. The absence of microbes in sawdust. B. The phenol-like molecules in wood.
C. The existence of a greener disinfectant. D. The possibility of being food poisoned.
14. How was Zhang’s research further carried out
A. By analyzing data from previous studies.
B. By identifying the ways different disinfectants kill.
C. By improving the process of dealing with by-products.
D. By comparing the effects of different concentrations of the mix.
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. A Public Drive Aims to Greener Disinfectants
B. A Chinese University Grows Microbe-killing Plants
C. A Disinfectant Made from Sawdust Knocks out Microbes
D. A Chinese Team Made Breakthroughs in Disease Research

Reasonable people should not have blind faith in the medical profession. ____16____ We have to check out the medicine we take. We have to ask for second and even third opinions. We must do some research. We have to use our common sense and be informed about our health care.
While it is true that modern Western medicine has risks, we shouldn’t reject it totally. ____17____ Most people who get good medical care are healthier and live longer.
If this is the case why has “alternative” health care become so popular in North America and Europe Often the fear of surgery motivates people to look for these alternatives. Many people think that these treatments will help even when the situation seems hopeless to Western doctors. ____18____ Surgeons perform dangerous surgery, but natural healers (治疗师) do not seem to give dangerous treatments. People don’t think alternative care would kill anyone by mistake. ____19____ No one wants to go to a doctor in a cold hospital clinic. Since some doctors don’t have a nice “bedside manner”, people like the attention they get from alternative healers.
____20____ All doctors and healers are human beings who can make mistakes. They can miss things and waste valuable time. No matter what happens, we have to think about all of the different options. Remember, there are millions of patients who are alive and well today because of “conventional” Western medicine.
A. Some alternative treatments are ineffective.
B. In addition everyone wants to be treated warmly.
C. We have to realize that there will be risks in almost any treatment.

E. Patients who trust their doctors are more likely to follow treatment plans.
F. We all have to get more information about the treatments that we are given.
G. The harm to the patients usually comes from not getting medical treatment immediately.

My husband Erik and I had promised the kids a Labrador puppy.
I’d seen the ad at the local hardware store. “Thirteen puppies in all, “Sally, the owner, said when I called. ”There’ re only three left. “I decided to take a look the next day. The boys jumped and shouted excitedly as I copied down directions and hung up the phone.
Early the next morning, still discussing names, we wound our way through the mountains to meet our family’s new best friend. Our boys had simple names: Ike, Sam, Ben, and Dom, so they Preferred simple names like Rosy ,too. Finally, we met the sweet little dog. ” Rosy, “the boys called it softly. Our little puppy cocked her head. ” She likes it,“they cheered and set about making Rosy comfortable for the long drive home. They offered her a chew toy and lifted her up so she could see out the window. They took turns holding her in their arms lovingly and offered her a snack.
Though small, Rosy grew strong and healthy beneath her shiny black coat. And, just as I’d hoped, she was a calming addition to our houseful of noisy boys. But something was wrong. “It’s like she doesn’t know how to play,” Sam commented one day after school. “Dogs have different personalities, just like people,”I said. “Besides, she’s still very young. ” “But her legs aren’t very long, and one eye is smaller than the other,”Ike added, trying to make sense of why Rosy was different from other puppies he’d met.
I looked across the room to where Rosy sat between the boys. The last golden rays of autumn sunshine shone brightly on her face. Sure enough, one eye was misshapen. Not only that, it didn’t glint (闪光) in the afternoon light. I drew in a breath. Rosy, our puppy with a name as short as her four little legs, was blind in one eye.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

I wrote a letter of resignation (辞职) — but instead of sending it I saved it on my desktop, ready to attach it to an email at any moment.

第二节(共5小题:每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
D. Alternative treatments are attractive because they seem less harmful.
E. Patients who trust their doctors are more likely to follow treatment plans.
F. We all have to get more information about the treatments that we are given.
G. The harm to the patients usually comes from not getting medical treatment immediately.
【答案】16. F 17. G 18. D 19. B 20. C
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇议论文。人们在寻求疾病的治疗方法时往往会有多样的选择,本文围绕该选择哪种方式展开了讨论。
【16题详解】
根据后文“We have to……”句型,能够推断出该空也应该是此句型,符合题意的有C、F选项。但是,该空前后都还没有涉及到治疗方式,直到下一行才有“We have to ask for second and even third opinions.(我们必须征求第二甚至第三个意见。)”,在后文的段落中才谈到治疗方式。因此F选项 “We all have to get more information about the treatments that we are given.(我们不得不获取到更多我们的治疗手段的信息。)”更为合适。故选F。
【17题详解】
根据后文“Most people who get good medical care are healthier and live longer.(大多数得到良好医疗保健的人更健康,寿命更长。)”可知,很多得到了好的药物治疗的患者一直变得更加健康且活的更加长久,再根据空前“we shouldn’t reject it totally.(我们不能完全否定西药)”可知,这里应该是讲西药有利的对立一方面,因此 G项“The harm to the patients usually comes from not getting medical treatment immediately.(伤害患者的通常是没有及时立即得到药物治疗。)”最符合题意。故选G。
【18题详解】
根据后文“Surgeons perform dangerous surgery, but natural healers (治疗师) do not seem to give dangerous treatments.(外科医生进行危险的手术,但自然治疗师似乎不会进行危险的治疗。)”可知,外科医生做危险的手术,但自然的治疗师似乎不会做危险的治疗,人们并不认为这种方法会造成死亡,可见,人们更加倾向于选择可供代替的治疗。 D选项“Alternative treatments are attractive because they seem less harmful.(替代疗法很有吸引力,因为它们似乎危害较小。)”最符合题意。故选D。
【19题详解】
根据空后“No one wants to go to a doctor in a cold hospital clinic.(没有人想去冷漠的医院的诊所看医生。)”可知,每个人都希望在医院看病时能够受到热情对待。B 选项“In addition everyone wants to be treated warmly.(此外,每个人都希望受到热情的对待。)”最符合题意。故选B。
【20题详解】
本空位于段首,应该找一个能够概括本段全部内容的选项。最后一段主要讲的主要内容是任何治疗方法都有一定的局限性,对应 C 选项“We have to realize that there will be risks in almost any treatment.(我们必须认识到,几乎任何治疗都有风险。)”最符合题意。故选C。

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

【答案】参考范文
Everyone in the room became serious and sad. The boys dropped their heads, looking heartbroken. “It’s unfair. ” Ike cried, tears in his eyes. Yes, it was unfair to the boys. They just wanted to have a little playmate, one that could see and run as well as any other dog. I shouldn’t have disappointed them in this way. But…the poor dog. Having hesitated for a little while, finally, I made a difficult decision. I walked to them, petted the dog, and then suggested giving it back and taking another healthy and lively little puppy.
Surprisingly, the boys refused to give the little puppy back. Sam held Rosy tightly in his arms and rubbed its fur. “Mommy, it’s not fair for the little dog. We should do something. We should love and care for her together. ” Ike looked straight into my eyes, begging to keep Rosy eagerly. The other boys joined immediately. It was then that I realized I had misunderstood them. Never had I expected my little boys had such great kindness. I was completely moved and nodded my head, “Yes, we’ll keep it. ”
