As a doctoral student, I served as a hostess for famous authors and illustrators(插图画家)when they came to participate in the Ohio State University Children’s Literature Conference. I hosted such beloved creators of children’s books as Nikki Grimes, Jerry Pinkney and James Ransome. I would stand at the airport, holding one of their books and waiting to pick them up and then drive them around town to places they needed to go and assist them during autograph(签名)sessions. After graduating from my university and accepting a position at Clemson University in 2003, I kept in touch with James Ransome.
In 2005 I received a grant from the government to conduct a family-literacy program. I wanted to see what would happen when I exposed ten African American families with children to books by and about African Americans. I provided each of the families with copies of seven books, five of which were illustrated by James.
The families participated in a series of five monthly workshops, and the final event was a presentation by James and an autograph session with him. I believed this event would be a meaningful way to end the program, by having a famous illustrator of children’s literature come and talk about his work, especially because the families and I had read and responded to several of his books over the course of the five workshops.
James’s visit was informative and enlightening for the families. A parent, Ashley, told me that she sent a note to her son’s teacher about having participated in the program and loaned her son’s autographed copies of James’s books for the class to read. Looking back over my career, this family-literacy program is one of the accomplishments of which I am the proudest, and I am especially pleased that James was part of it.
24.How did the author come into contact with James?
A.The author met him by accident at the airport.
B.The author went to him to ask for an autograph.
C.The author hosted him when he attended a conference.
D.The author was introduced to him by a university professor.
25.What can be learned about James?
A.He ran monthly workshops.
B.He is an African American.
C.He has written seven books.
D.He graduated from Clemson University.
26.What did James do for the family-literacy program?
A.He gave a talk to the families.
B.He loaned his books to the families.
C.He responded to the questions raised by the families.
D.He asked the government to give financial support to the families.
27.What is Ashley’s attitude towards James?
A.Doubtful.
B.Caring.
C.Tolerant.
D.Appreciative.
C
Recently, many climate change campaigns and organizations have marketed themselves using images of polar bears losing their habitat. This has led many people to view the polar bear as the global icon(象征物)for our climate crisis.
The polar bear has become so widespread because lit does an excellent job of playing on the audience’s emotions and convincing them that there is an urgent problem on Earth. The imagery of a polar bear is also much more attractive than a scientific graph(图表)or chart of increasing sea level or frequency of extreme weather.
However, using polar bears as the only icon of climate change is flawed(有缺点的). For one, it only represents one effect of climate change, global warming, and not climate change itself. It neglects to address other aspects such as extreme weather events, ocean acidification, etc. While global warming is an important impact of climate change, the other aspects need to be communicated as well since climate change may not even cause warming in certain parts of the world -it could lead to severe snowstorms or colder winters instead. Thus, communicating these other elements is vital because it can reduce much of the misinformation surrounding our climate and give the audience a more comprehensive understanding of our planet.
Moreover, using images of polar bears is problematic because most people do not live anywhere near polar bear habitat. This makes polar bears feel far removed from our own personal reality-thus making climate change feel far removed from our lives. Since climate change is anything but a distant phenomenon, a symbol that communicates the ways in which the climate crisis affects humans could be more convincing and push more people to act.
Even though using the polar bear as the icon of climate change plays a limited role in conveying the full scope of our climate crisis, it can act as an agent of opening up the conversation about environmental issues and inspiring viewers to dive deeper into learning about climate change.
28.Why are polar bears preferred as marketing images?
A.Their imagery is more convincing.
B.They are likely to lose their habitat.
C.They are unique victims of the climate crisis.
D.The data on them often appear in scientific graphs.
29.What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A.Polar bears are the only indicator of climate change.
B.Climate change is bound to result in global warming.
C.All elements of climate change have been communicated to the public.
D.Using polar bears as the only icon of climate change will cause some problems.
30.What does the underlined word “This” refer to in paragraph 4?
A.Failing to understand our planet.
B.Refusing to take immediate action.
C.Living far from polar bear habitat.
D.Using polar bears to explain climate change.
31.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?
A.The occurrence of climate change
B.The possible impact of climate change
C.The imperfect symbol of climate change
D.The importance of protecting polar bears
D
There are many kinds of pollution, which can be classified by environment, including air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution. Modern society is also concerned about specific types of pollution, such as noise pollution, light pollution and plastic pollution. Pollution of all kinds may not only have negative effects on the environment and wildlife. but also do harm to human health and well-being.
Although environmental pollution can be caused by natural events such as forest fires and active volcanoes, use of the word “pollution” generally means that the wastes have an anthropocentric source—that is, a source created by human activities. Pollution has accompanied humankind ever since groups of people first congregated and remained for a long time in any one place. Indeed, ancient human settlements are frequently recognized by their wastes, Pollution was not a serious problem as long as there was enough space available for each individual or group. However, with the establishment of permanent settlements by great numbers of people, pollution became a problem, and it has remained one ever since.
By the middle of the 20th century, an awareness of the need to protect air, water, and land environments from pollution had developed among the general public. In particular, the publication in 1962 of Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring focused attention on environmental damage caused by improper use of pesticides such as DDT. In response, major pieces of environmental law and regulation were passed in many countries to control the environmental pollution.
Great efforts are made to limit the release of harmful substances into the environment. Unfortunately, attempts at pollution control are surpassed by the scale of the problem, especially in less-developed countries. Noxious levels of air pollution are common in large cities. To control the pollution completely, we still have a long way to go.
32.What does paragraph 1 mainly talk about?
A.The history of pollution. B.The types of pollution.
C.The causes of pollution. D.The effects of pollution.
33.What is the original cause of pollution according to this passage?
A.Natural disasters. B.Forest fires. C.Volcanoes. D.Human activities.
34.What does the underlined word “congregated” mean in paragraph 2?
A.gathered. B.separated. C.attended. D.lived.
35.What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A.No measures have been taken by the government to control the problems of pollution.
B.The book Silent Spring helped to improve the awareness of protecting the environment.
C.Silent Spring concentrated on the improper use of plastic bags.
D.The pollution has been controlled in less-developed countries.

I had run away from home after finishing high school. My parents had insisted I go to college, but I was tired of school. I hated it. I was determined not to go. And, besides, my father was too strict. I had too many chores to do around the farm. I hated the work!
There had been a quarrel between my father and me. I threw some things into a bag and left angrily, as my father shouted after me, “If you leave, don’t come back!” My mother cried openly, and I had seen those tears during a hundred sleepless nights.
Then it was time to write a letter to my father.
Dear Dad,
It’s been more than a year now. I’ve traveled east to west. I’ve had dozens of jobs. None of them amounted to very much. Always the same questions: “How much education have you got ” It seems they always want college men for the good jobs.
Dad, you and Mother were right about everything. I know now that the work on the farm didn’t hurt me, and I’m convinced I need college. I’m also convinced that both of you loved me.
Dad, I’ve learned a lesson. I want to come home. I know you said if I left, I couldn’t come back, but I’m praying you’ll change your mind. I want to come home and be a part of the family again.
Give my love to Mother and the girls.
Love,
Your son
As I folded the letter and put it into an envelope, I felt a refreshing relief. It was as if a heavy load had been lifted from my shoulders. And I had to be on my way home.
I started down the deserted road—the long road home. Fortunately, a car picked me up, and it was good to have someone to talk with. The driver was a salesman and very pleasant.
“Where you going, boy ” he asked good-naturedly.
There was a long silence before I said, “Home.”
“Been away from home long ”
I smiled, a little self-conscious, and said, “One year, one month and two days.”

B.【答案】24.C 25.B 26.A 27.D
根据第一段中“As a doctoral student, I served as a hostess for famous authors and illustrators when they came to participate in the Ohio State University Children’s Literature Conference. I hosted such beloved creators of children’s books as Nikki Grimes. Jerry Pinkney and James Ransome. (在读博士期间,我为前来参加俄亥俄州立大学儿童文学大会的著名作 家和插画家担任主持人。我邀请了尼基·格莱姆斯、杰里·平克尼和詹姆斯·兰瑟姆等受人喜爱的儿童书籍创作者)”可知,当James参加会议时,是作者接待了他,从而接触。故选C。
25.细节理解题。根据第二段中“I wanted to see what would happen when I exposed ten African American families with children to books by and about African Americans. I provided each of the families with copies of seven books, five of which were illustrated by James.(我想着看当我让十个有孩子的非裔美国家庭阅读非裔美国人写的和关于非裔美国人的书时会发生什么。我给每个家庭提供了七本书,其中五本是詹姆斯的插图)”可知,James是一个非裔美国人。故选B。

27.推理判断题。根据最后一段“James’s visit was informative and enlightening for the families. A parent, Ashley, told me that she sent a note to her son’s teacher about having participated in the program and loaned her son’s autographed copies of James’s books for the class to read. Looking back over my career, this family-literacy program is one of the accomplishments of which I am the proudest, and I am especially pleased that James was part of it.(詹姆斯的访问对这些家庭来说是有益的和有启发的。
根据第二段中的“because it does an excellent job…convincing them that”及“The imagery of a polar bear is also much more attractive than a scientific graph(图表)or chart of increasing sea level or frequency of extreme weather”可知,北极熊的形象比图表更有吸引力,更容易使人信服,所以人们喜欢把北极熊作为营销形象,故选A项。
根据第三段中的“However, using polar bears as the only icon of climate change is flawed(有缺点的)”可知,把北极熊作为气候的唯一标志是有问题的。
根据画线词后的“makes polar bears feel far removed from our own personal reality-thus making climate change feel far removed from our lives”可知这使人们感觉北极熊和个人生活不相干,并因此让人感觉气候变化和我们的生活不相干;由此可推知,This指的是上文提到的大多数人都不住在北极熊栖息地附近。
D.【答案】32.B 33.D 34.A 35.B
根据文章第一段“There are many kinds of pollution, which can be classified by environment, including air pollution, water pollution, and land pollution. Modern society is also concerned about specific types of pollution, such as noise pollution, light pollution and plastic pollution.(污染有很多种,可以按环境来分类,包括空气污染、水污染和土地污染。现代社会还关注特定类型的污染,如噪音污染、光污染和塑料污染。)”可知,第一段主要讲述了污染的种类。故选B。
33.细节理解题。根据文章第二段“Although environmental pollution can be caused by natural events such as forest fires and active volcanoes, use of the word “pollution” generally means that the wastes have an anthropocentric source-that is, a source created by human activities.(虽然环境污染可能是由森林火灾和活火山等自然事件造成的,但使用‘污染’一词通常意味着这些废物具有以人类为中心的来源,即由人类活动产生的来源。)”
根据下文“However, with the establishment of permanent settlements by great numbers of people, pollution became a problem, and it has remained one ever since.(然而,随着大量人口的永久定居,污染成为了一个问题,从那时起它一直是一个问题。)” 故选A。
根据文章倒数第二段“In particular, the publication in 1962 of Rachel Carson’s book Silent Spring focused attention on environmental damage caused by improper use of pesticides such as DDT. In response, major pieces of environmental law and regulation were passed in many countries to control the environmental pollution.(特别是1962年出版的雷切尔·卡森(Rachel Carson)的《寂静的春天》(Silent Spring)一书,将人们的注意力集中在了DDT 等杀虫剂的不当使用所造成的环境破坏上。作为回应,许多国家通过了重要的环境法律法规来控制环境污染。)”可知,《寂静的春天》这本书对于提高环保意识是有帮助的。故选B。

第一节(满分15分)
Dear fellow students,
I am head of the School Environmental Protection Club. Our club is dedicated to promoting sustainable practices and raising the awareness of environmental protection.
The use of plastics on our campus has reached alarming levels, leading to significant environmental consequences. Single-use plastic items, such as water bottles, food containers, and plastic bags, are widely used and thrown away, contributing to pollution and waste.
To address this issue, I would like to propose two concrete measures. First, we suggest using a waste sorting system, which will encourage students to separate plastic waste from other trash. In addition, it’s recommended that reusable and eco-friendly shopping bags should be provided in school stores and canteens, thereby reducing the demand for plastic bags.
In the light of the above, we kindly request your support and attention to this matter. Let’s work together to create a more sustainable and plastic-free campus.
The School Environmental Protection Club
Having heard my story, he expressed his support for my final decision and told me something surprising about his son. “Boy, you have made the right choice to go back home,” he said. “To be frank, my son ran away from home two years ago. I have been missing him every hour and every minute.” Now it’s time for me to comfort him, “Don’t worry. I believe he will come back soon, just like me.” I expressed my thanks for his kindness of having me in his car and I wished his son good luck. After all, we are all good people and good people deserve good fortune.
Finally, I arrived home when it was completely dark. Nervous and uneasy, I approached the door and knocked on it gently. It was my father who opened the door and my sudden appearance made him go wild with joy. “Son, you’ve finally come back. I’ve been waiting for this moment for long,” said my father in a trembling voice. It was at that moment that I realized there is no place like home and that blood is thicker than water.
