Last year, I went through every high school senior’s nightmare: I was refused from all the colleges I applied to. It’s not that I was a bad student. I had a narrow vision, applying only to some key schools. So when I got refused, I got into a panic. I thought there was only one path to success, and I wasn’t on it. While all my friends were picking out twin extra-long sheets, I was left wondering what kind of future I could have.
When my panic faded, I signed in the community college. I wasn’t excited. I imagined community college classrooms with incompetent teachers that taught their students to sleep. I was so wrong. My art history professor was so poetic, and her lectures felt spoken word. My classmates were intelligent and came from all walks of life — still figuring things out like me.
I decided to give myself a year of experiment. Aside from general education, I took a range of classes. I know it seems like a random kind of classes, but it allowed me to know what I like and don’t like. I used to have this idea that I had to rush in order to achieve a certain level of success by a certain age, but a year of community college has taught me to slow down, and to recognize that things take time to adjust. I still hope to transfer to a four-year university next year, but I’ll be going about it as a more mature person.
Being around students from all walks of life has made me realize that I’m not late in the game at all. There’s more than one way to get where you want to be.
4. What caused the author’s “high school senior’s nightmare”
A. He was rejected by the colleges he applied to.
B. He didn’t do well in some subjects at school.
C. He only took some key schools into consideration.
D. He got confused about which school to apply to.
5. What does the underlined part mean in Paragraph 1
A. The author’s friends have extra sheets.
B. The future for the author’s friends is clear.
C. The way to success is long for the author’s friends.
D. The author’s friends have many choices.
6. Why was the author unhappy in the community college at first
A. His art history professor was extremely expressive.
B. He didn’t like studying with students from all walks of life.
C. He thought the teachers in the community college had poor ability.
D. He learned students in the community college always slept in class.
7. What did the author learn from his experience in the community college
A. There’s no need to hurry to achieve certain success.
B. A year of experiment is not worthwhile for him at all.
C. The way to success is to transfer to a four-year university.
D. It’s a waste of time being around students from all walks of life.

French surgeons have performed what they said on Wednesday was the world’s first partial face transplant — giving a new nose, chin and lips to a woman attacked by a dog.
Specialists from two French hospitals carried out the operation on a 38-year-old woman on Sunday in the northern city of Amiens by taking the face from a brain-dead woman, who had hanged herself just hours before the operation. Her family agreed on the operation.
“The patient is in an excellent state and the transplant looks normal.” The hospitals said in a brief statement after waiting three days to announce the pioneering surgery. The woman had been left without a nose and lips after the dog attacked her last May, and was unable to talk or chew properly. Such injuries are “extremely difficult, if not impossible” to repair using normal surgical techniques, the statement said. The statement did not say what the woman would look like when she had fully recovered, but medical experts said she was unlikely to resemble the woman who had been the source of her new face. The operation was led by Jean-Michel Dubernard, a specialist from a hospital in Lyon who has also carried out hand transplants. Skin transplants have long been used to treat burns and other injuries, but operations around the mouth and nose have been considered very difficult because of the area’s high sensitivity to foreign tissue. Teams in France, the United States and Britain had been developing techniques to make face transplants a reality.
There was a short-term risk for the patient if blood vessels (脉管) became blocked, a medium-term danger of her body rejecting the new skin and a long-term possibility that the drugs used could cause cancers. Experts say that although such medical advances should be celebrated, the transplant had thrown up moral and ethical (伦理的) issues. Little is known about the psychological effect of the transplant.
8. What makes the woman’s operation extremely challenging
A. The patient’s unstable mood.
B. The doctor’s lack of surgical techniques.
C. The masses’ unacceptance of this transplant.
D The damaged area’s high sensitivity to transplanted tissues.
9. Which of the following is NOT one of the risks of the operation
A. Heart damage. B. Organ rejection.
C. Side effect of the drugs. D. Block of blood vessels.
10. What can we learn about the operation
A. The woman had used the dead woman’s whole face.
B. Such transplants have been performed by top doctors.
C. The woman will suffer from psychological damage soon.
D. There has arisen a moral and ethical debate about the operation.
11. What’s the best title for the passage
A. First Face Transplant Opens Debate.
B. French Woman has First Partial Face Transplant.
C. Risks and Ethical Problems of a Face Transplant.
D. A Complete Face Transplant of a French Woman.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is showing promise in earthquake prediction, challenging the long-held belief that it is impossible. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, have developed an AI algorithm(算法) that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and provided accurate strength calculations for the predicted earthquakes.
The research team believes their method succeeded because they stuck with a relatively simple machine learning approach. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background rumblings(隆隆声) in the Earth.
This work is clearly a milestone in research for AI-driven earthquake prediction. “You don’t see earthquakes coming,” explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who leads the Texas Seismological Network Program (TexNet). “It’s a matter of milliseconds, and the only thing you can control is how prepared you are. Even with the 70% accuracy, that’s a huge result and could help minimize economic and human losses and has the potential to remarkably improve earthquake preparation worldwide.”
While it is unknown whether the same approach will work at other locations, the researchers are confident that their AI algorithm could produce more accurate predictions if used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking networks. The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet hastions and over six years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location 300 earthquake sta for these purposes.
Eventually, the authors hope to combine the system with physics-based models. This strategy could prove especially important where data is poor or lacking. “That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what moves science forward,” concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.
12. How does the AI forecast earthquakes
A. By identifying data from the satellites.
B. By analyzing background sounds in the Earth.
C. By modeling data based on earthquake recordings.
D. By monitoring changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.
13. What does Alexandros Savvaidis intend to show in paragraph 3
A. The ways to reduce losses in earthquakes.
B. The importance of preparing for earthquakes.
C. The significance of developing the AI prediction.
D. The limitation of AI algorithms in earthquake prediction.
14. What does the follow-up research focus on
A. Conducting tests in different locations.
B. Applying the AI approach to other fields.
C. Building more earthquake stations in Texas.
D. Enlarging the database to train the calculation accuracy.
15. Which words can best describe the earthquake-predicting technology
A. Stable but outdated.
B. Effective but costly.
C. Potential and economical.
D. Pioneering and promising.

____18____
In addition to the physical and neurological benefits, dance can also help people living with disease accept what their bodies can and can’t do. Rather than trying to control, or “fix” our body, dance is about developing greater body awareness and moving at our capacity, regardless of physical or cognitive difference.
Dance as community
____19____ Dancing with others not only makes people feel less different in their abilities when dealing with neurological and movement disorders, it also helps to combat the loneliness and social isolation of living with a chronic illness. Still, researchers say they’re only scratching the surface of understanding how dance can be used therapeutically. ____20____ Additional studies are also needed to pinpoint the most effective types of dance movements and the optimal length and frequency of classes. It’s also unclear who would benefit most, in terms of age or disease progression.
A. Dance as body acceptance
B. Dance as brain improvement
C. The effect extends beyond the dance class to the real world.
D. Perhaps one of the biggest benefits of dance is the sense of community it creates.
E. Basically, dancing requires more “brain power” than simpler repetitive exercises.

D. The damaged area’s high sensitivity to transplanted tissues.

A The ways to reduce losses in earthquakes.
B. The importance of preparing for earthquakes.
C. The significance of developing the AI prediction.
D. The limitation of AI algorithms in earthquake prediction.
14. What does the follow-up research focus on
A. Conducting tests in different locations.
B. Applying the AI approach to other fields.
C. Building more earthquake stations in Texas.
D. Enlarging the database to train the calculation accuracy.
15. Which words can best describe the earthquake-predicting technology
A. Stable but outdated.
B. Effective but costly.
C. Potential and economical.
D. Pioneering and promising.

With growing evidence that dancing helps boost brain health and manage symptoms of neurocognitive and movement disorders, accessible dance programmes and movement therapists around the world are helping improve the lives of millions. ____16____.
Dance as medicine
There’s actually a lot more happening inside the brain when trying to follow even the simplest choreography (舞蹈设计). “In dance, we have to learn patterns, think symmetrically (对称地) and asymmetrically, and remember sequences,” says David Leventhal, a programme director. ____17____ Tasks like navigating the kitchen or walking to the bus stop can become more attainable if they are regarded as choreography.
F. So what is it about dance that’s different from a brisk walk or other aerobic exercises
G. Larger studies are needed to confirm the findings of the smaller trials that have been done so far.

As usual, Josie was curious about everything and observing. The office workers were hurrying to work. A guitar player was playing and singing surrounded by passers-by and tourists. A grey and black bird was hopping (双足齐跳) on the ground. Josie imitate (模仿) the little creature, hopping and laughing.
When she turned around to see if her father was within reach, she noticed a beggar in rags sitting on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign with some words on it. With curiosity, Josie held her father’s hand and moved closer to the beggar. Josie found the beggar was an old blind man and his sign read, “I am blind. Please help.” There were only a few coins in the hat. Josie’s father took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. “We need to go, honey, or you will be late for school.” The father held the girl’s hand and they left, but little Josie turned her head several times until they turned left to another street and the blind man was invisible.
“I want to help the poor old man.” Josie was thinking about how to help the poor old man the whole day. At 3:00 p. m. in the afternoon, Josie’s father showed up at the school gate to pick up Josie. “I want to help the poor man,” Josie told her father, “but I have no idea.” It was the warmest time of a cold day. 【答案】 Suddenly, an idea occurred to Josie that she could change the words on the man’s sign. “Hurry up, Father, or the old man may have left.” Josie ran back to the street excitedly, leaving her father puzzled. To Josie’s relief, the beggar was still there sitting on the steps of the building and the amount of coins in the hat seemed the same as that in the morning. Josie told the old man that she could help to rewrite the sign. The beggar nodded his head. She then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. She put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.
Seeing the new sign, more people paused their steps and soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were dropping money into the hat. Josie was more than happy and her father was amazed and somewhat proud of his daughter. When the sun was on its journey to set, people were getting back home. The beggar was surprised and grateful, nodding to everyone casting coins into the hat and keeping saying “Thank you!”. The last sunlight was casting on the sign, which read: “Today is a beautiful sunny day but I cannot see it.”
