Wildlife faces threats (威胁) from habitat destruction, pollution, and other human actions. Although protecting wildlife may seem too hard at times, even small actions in your own neighborhood can help protect many different animals. Here are some tips on how to protect wildlife through small actions.
☆Create wildlife friendly areas in your backyard.
When trying to make your garden more beautiful, you can choose plants that can provide food and shelter to native wildlife. This will also help cut down on pollution.
☆Avoid harming the natural ecosystem in your area.
Some plants from other places can kill or harm native plants that provide food and shelter for wildlife.
☆Have a greener lifestyle.
By using less water and fewer fuels, you will be helping to protect the wildlife around you. Take buses or the subway when you can, turn off electric devices when you're not using them, take shorter showers, and keep your room temperature at or below 68 Fahrenheit degrees during the winter.
☆Buy products that are wildlife friendly.
Don't buy products that are made from endangered animals. Keep in mind that some endangered animals are killed by traps or hunters who are after other wildlife within the same habitat.
☆Donate money or time to organizations that protect wildlife and their habitats.
You can give money to organizations or groups that protect wildlife species in your neighborhood.

A group of volunteers joined forces to form a human chain to free four dolphins which had been stranded (搁浅) in a canal for four days. The four dolphins were seen in the water near the Fossil Park neighborhood in St. Petersburg, Florida, US, on Sunday. Experts from the Florida Fish and Wildiife Conservation mission(FWC) had watched the dolphins' activities in the past few days and hoped that they would swim out with the tide.
But when the dolphins struggled to leave the canal, the brave volunteers joined members of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the Clearwater Marine Aquarium to form a rescue team to free them. Many people gathered to take videos and pictures of the kind act. A team of 14 volunteers held hands to act as a block to guide the dolphins out of the narrow channel. They shouted and patted the water with their hands to direct the dolphins to vast waters of Riviera Bay. Dolphins find their way in the water through echolocation(回声定位).That means that they can recognize the echoes of sound waves to find their way around.
Andy Garrett, a biologist of the FWC said,“We were able to keep that chain together. The dolphins were interested. They actually came over right away.”He added that when the team reached a bridge, the dolphins appeared a bit nervous and started doing some spins. “They made one real hard pass at our team and then went under the bridge and took off,” Garrett said. The operation lasted about 45 minutes and the rescue team did not use nets or any items that could stress the dolphins.

My dad works with green technology. Last summer,he was sent to a small town called Gaviotas in Colombia. He decided to take me with him. At first I wasn’t too eager. What was I going to do in the middle of nowhere,in a country where I couldn’t even speak the language And anyway, what was so special about Gaviotas
My dad told me that Gaviotas was an example of how people could live without destroying the environment. This got me a bit more interested,so I did some research. I found out that Gaviotas was founded in 1971 by a group of scientists and artists. They had decided to build a completely new town in the remote, war worn eastern Colombia where there was nothing.
When we eventually arrived,I was amazed by how green it was and my dad explained that they had replanted millions of trees. There were many different species of birds flying about and flowers everywhere.I was beginning to like it. My dad’s contact in Gaviotas has a son exactly my age,Ricardo. He speaks really good English and so for the next week he was my guide to this amazing place. The first thing he pointed out to me was all the fantastic technology that had been invented there. Ricardo told me that they produce 70% of all their own energy and food with very little waste. The trees they planted more than compensate for any greenhouse gases they emit(排放).
But Gaviotas is not a success just because of its green technology,it’s also a model for how people can live more peacefully together. Every family gets a free home, free meals and free schooling for the children. So there is no poverty.People get on well with each other. It’ s fantastic.
I was really sad to leave Gaviotas, but now I have a new dream:I hope that 20 years from now,we’ll all be living in towns like Gaviotas.
8.What can best describe the author’s feeling at the very beginning
A. Annoyed. B. Uninterested. C. Excited. D. Worried.
9.What kind of town did Gaviotas use to be
A. Bare and war stricken. B. Green and efficient.
C. Modern but polluted. D. Small but advanced.
10.Where can you find the evidence to show that Gaviotas is a green town
A. Paragraph 2. B. Paragraph 3. C. Paragraph 4. D. Paragraph 5.
11. What does Paragraph 4 focus on
A. How scientists and artists founded Gaviotas.
B. How people in Gaviotas avoid waste.
C. Gaviotas is famous for its green technology.
D .Gaviotas is an ideal model of community.

Today we know Antarctica as an extreme environment containing ice and snow. But new research provides evidence that the area had a rainforest in the past.
The researchers collected a piece of Earth sediment from under the seafloor off the coast of Antarctica. In the sediment, they discovered forest material that was estimated to be about 90 million years old. This would have been in the Cretaceous Period, when dinosaurs were the main land animals. The sediment was removed by scientists on the research icebreaker RV Polarstern in the Amundsen Sea near Pine Island Glacier.
Johann Klages is a geologist with the Alfred Wegener Institute, Helmholtz Center for Polar and Marine Research in Germany. He was the lead writer of a study on the findings, published in the journal Nature. He said the sediment was collected from a depth of about 30 meters below the ocean floor. Klages said an examination showed that the material didn't form in the ocean.
The researchers estimate that the area — about 900 kilometers from the South Pole — had average yearly temperatures of about 12 to 13 degrees Celsius. During the warmest summer months, average temperatures likely reached between 20 and 25 degrees Celsius. The soil included fine dirt particles and hard clay, as well as substances linked to at least 65 different kinds of plants, the study found. Klages added that the plants included trees, ferns and flowering plants. While no animal remains were found, Klages said there were likely dinosaurs, flying reptiles and many insects in the environment.
The research represents new evidence of the major climate changes Earth has experienced in the past — and is currently undergoing today. The soil in the sediment dates back to the planet’s warmest period of the past 140 million years, with sea level about 170 meters higher than today. The researchers said that the rainforest environment in Antarctica was especially surprising because each year, the area experiences a four-month polar night when there is no sunlight to fuel plant life. Klages said no ice sheets were present during the time, but seasonal snowfall was likely.
12.How did the researchers reach their findings
A. By exploring ice in Antarctica.
B. By analyzing the Earth sediment.
C. By collecting data on climate.
D. By researching special plants.
13.What did the researchers say about the sediment
A. Its material developed in the ocean.
B. It dates back to cold times in Antarctica.
C. Its material formed on the land.
D. It contained different animal remains.
14.What does the author indicate in the last paragraph
A. Antarctica’s natural environment has changed greatly.
B. Polar nights in Antarctica are getting shorter than before.
C. There were ice sheets 140 million years ago.
D. Seasonal snowfall made the forest disappear.
15.What is the main idea of the text
A. Researchers study the secrets of Antarctica.
B. Antarctica had a different history of climate.
C. There’s various wildlife in Antarctica.
D. Antarctica has an extreme environment containing ice and snow.

Ben was awakened by a gunshot. The sharp noise came through the thick stone walls of the house. It was cold in the bedroom and Ben was shaking as he got out of bed. He put on his eyeglasses and went over to the window. The field was covered with white frost. Nothing moved out there in the deep quiet just before sunrise.
Ben wondered where the shot had come from. He thought perhaps he had dreamed he heard a gunshot. He looked out toward the frozen lake. Near the trees he saw a shining piece of metal. When it moved, Ben saw that it was a long gun. A minute later a man came out of the woods. He wore hunting clothes. Suddenly a bird flew upward. The man quickly put the gun to his shoulder and shot. Ben watched the bird, praying(祈祷)it had not been hurt. It flew near the ground and went into some tall grass. Safe, Ben thought.
The hunter did not move for a moment, and then he began to follow the bird. Hate for the hunter burned inside Ben. “Hey!” he shouted. His voice cut through the stillness. The hunter stopped, but then continued to follow the bird. Ben shouted again, but this time the hunter did not stop and Ben started to move toward him. The hunter looked back at Ben. Ben had just bought this house in the woods. He wanted to protect everything on his land. He thought that everyone would obey the signs “No Hunting.”
However, he heard another gunshot. This troubled him deeply. How could he stop this hunter He walked toward the lake. He did not want to fight, but the man must go. He walked quietly. He wanted to surprise the hunter. But then, what would he do He could not fight the hunter.

Dear friends
Our school produces a lot of rubbish every day, such as leftover food, waste paper and plastic bottles, which brings a chain of environmental problems as well as the waste of resources. Therefore,it' s time we took immediate action to change the situation.
First of all, it is necessary for us to raise awareness of environmental protection. What's more, we should voluntarily differentiate the recyclable rubbish from the non-recyclable- in our daily life. For example, reuse waste paper and recycle plastic bottles.
In a word, we all should have the responsibility for garbage sorting. Only in this way will our school become more and more beautiful.

He turned around toward the direction where Ben stood, “Who are you doing here ”
There was something threatening in the man’s cool quiet voice. Ben straightened his back and replied to the man with determination and force, “I am the landlord of this place and you step into my private field. I demand you leave right now.” “Is that so ” The hunter said doubtfully. “Yes, I have claimed this place! LEAVE!” The hunter swung his gun and whistled, leaving at last. Ben relieved a sigh. The frost on the dry grass started to melt when the rising sun rose from the East with sunlight dancing on the signs “No hunting”.
