芭蕾舞(ballet)孕育于意大利文艺复兴时期,十七世纪后半叶开始在法国发展流行并逐渐职业化。女演员表演时以脚尖点地,又称脚尖舞。代表作品有《天鹅湖》Swan Lake、《睡美人》Sleeping Beauty、《胡桃夹子》Nut Cracker。芭蕾舞是用音乐、舞蹈手法来表演戏剧情节。
俄罗斯柴可夫斯基的芭蕾舞剧《天鹅湖》,4幕,作于1876年。这是柴可夫斯基所作的第一部舞曲,取材于民间传说,剧情为:公主奥杰塔在天鹅湖畔被恶魔变成了白天鹅。王子齐格费里德游天鹅湖,深深爱恋奥杰塔。王子挑选新娘之夜,恶魔让他的女儿黑天鹅伪装成奥杰塔以欺骗王子。王子差一点受骗,最终及时发现,奋击恶魔,扑杀之。白天鹅恢复公主原形,与王子结合,以美满结局。
