Later this month, Tate Britain will host its first Van Gogh exhibition since 1947. Here we've rounded up 4 of his best paintings before the show.
Potato Eaters
Potato Eaters was Van Gogh's first major work and, despite a distinct lack of colour, it was one that he was most proud of. His aim was to represent the difficulties of country life, so the farmers are painted in earthy tones with rough faces and bony hands. He was more concerned with conveying his message than achieving technical perfection in this painting.
Irises
Van Gogh finished almost 142 pieces during his stay in the Saint Remy de Provence asylum (精神病院), where he was a voluntary patient from 1889 to 1890. This piece was started shortly after he arrived there. The hospital garden provided much inspiration for the artist during his stay there. Originally, the flowers in this work were painted purple but the red pigment (色素) faded over time and has now turned blue.
Cafe Terrace at Night
Despite being painted more than 130 years ago, this cafe still exists in France and has since been renamed the Cafe Van Gogh. This artwork marks the first time Van Gogh's famous post-impressionistic star-filled sky was seen in a piece, and it was painted on the ground, in person, rather than from memory. While the artwork doesn't bear his signature, it's widely known to be Van Gogh's, as he mentioned Cafe Terrace at Night in a number of his letters.
Wheat Field With Cypresses
This piece was inspired by the view from Van Gogh's asylum window and was finished on the spot. The work was the title of three paintings that offer an insight into his stay at the hospital.' Van Gogh was 80 pleased with the summer landscape that he made three copies there, one of the same size—which hangs in the National Gallery and two smaller copies which he planned to gift to his mother and sister.
21. Which painting did Vincent van Gogh take most pride in
A. Irises. B. Potato Eaters.
C. Cafe Terrace at Night. D. Wheat Field With Cypresses.
22. What is the original color of the flowers in Irises
A. Purple. B. Blue. C. Red. D. Yellow.
23. What do the last two paintings have in common
A. They were the same in size. B. They had more than one copy.
C. They were signed by the artist, D. They were painted on the ground.
【答案】21. B 22. A 23. D
【解析】
【分析】这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了梵高的四幅代表作。
【21题详解】
细节理解题。由Potato Eaters一节中的“Potato Eaters was Van Gogh's first major work and, despite a distinct lack of colour, it was one that he was most proud of.”(《吃土豆的人》是梵高的第一部主要作品,尽管明显缺乏色彩,但这是他最引以为豪的作品。),可知Potato Eaters是梵高自己感到最得意的作品。故选B项。
【22题详解】
细节理解题。由Irises一节中的“Originally, the flowers in this work were painted purple but the red pigment (色素) faded over time and has now turned blue.”(最初,这幅作品中的花朵被涂成紫色,但随着时间的推移,红色素褪色,现在变成蓝色。),可知Irises中的花原来是紫色的,后来因为失去了红色素,而变成了色。故选A项。
【23题详解】
细节理解题。由Cafe Terrace at Night一节中的“This artwork marks the first time Van Gogh's famous post-impressionistic star-filled sky was seen in a piece, and it was painted on the ground, in person, rather than from memory.”(这幅作品标志着梵高著名的后印象派星空第一次出现在一幅作品中,梵高亲自当场绘制了它,而不是从记忆中绘制的。)和Wheat Field With Cypresses一节中的“This piece was inspired by the view from Van Gogh's asylum window and was finished on the spot.”(这件作品的灵感来自梵高住的精神病院窗户的景色,并当场完成。),可知Cafe Terrace at Night和Wheat Field With Cypresses这两幅画都是现场写生的,on the ground/ on the spot(当场)。故选D项。

When I entered Oxford University, I wasn’t particularly interested in joining the rowing club. I just wanted to know what it is like to row in one of those narrow boats, so I signed up with the intention of quitting after the first session. At least that’s what I thought.
Six months later, I found myself sitting in a rowing boat with three teammates, waiting for a 2000-meter race to start. In the boat alongside us sat a crew from the university’s team, two of whom had won medals at the Beijing Olympics in 2008. My crew was only rowing at college-level and we had only trained a few times as a team, so facing such strong athletes was quite terrifying. I tried to focus my mind on the race, not on my opponents.
Go! We pushed off with all our might and rowed as fast as we could. As we reached the halfway mark, the other crew was ahead of us. But to my amazement we were gaining on them. If we could win the race, we would get through to the final! We pushed even harder, ignoring the pain in our legs and drawing energy from the cheers of our college friends. I could already sense the sweet taste of victory.
But then, disaster. One of my teammates lost control of his oar (桨), knocking him nearly out of the boat. We came to a sudden stop, and watched as our opponents crossed the finishing line. It was the most disappointing moment in my life. I wanted to punch my teammate who had ruined everything and push him into the water. But when I saw how angry he was with himself, I gave him a hug.
Although we lost, I’m still proud of how well we did that day facing a much stronger team. What I remember now is the thrill of racing, not the pain of defeat.
24. What was the author’s attitude to rowing in the beginning
A. He was curious about rowing. B. He was fond of rowing.
C. He was eager to win in a rowing race. D. He was tired of rowing.
25. How did the author feel when he and his team reached the halfway mark
A. Worried. B. Terrified. C. Disappointed. D. Surprised.
26. Why did they lose the game
A. A group member made a mistake. B. The opponents were too strong.
C. They were worn out. D. They hurt their legs.
27. Which can be the best title of the text
A. Nothing is impossible. B. Trying your best is the best award.
C. The early bird catches the worm. D. Never quit until the last minute.
【答案】24. A 25. D 26. A 27. B

C
The rate of childhood obesity in the U. S. has tripled over the past 50 years. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) made waves this year by recommending that doctors put obese kids as young as two years old on intensive, family-oriented lifestyle and behavior plans. It also suggested prescribing weight-loss drugs to children l2 and older and surgery to teens 13 and older. This advice reflects the organization’s adoption of a more active position on childhood obesity.
Yet the lifestyle programs the AAP recommends are expensive, inaccessible to most children and hard to maintain. Few weight-loss drugs have been approved for children. And surgery has potential risks and few long-term safety data. Furthermore, it’s not clear whether interventions in youngsters help to improve health or merely add to the psychological burden overweight kids face from the society.
Rather than paying close attention to numbers on a scale, the U. S. and countries with similar trends should focus on an underlying truth: we need to invest in more and safer places for children to play where they can move and run around, climb and jump, ride and skate.
Why is it so hard to get kids moving Experts blame the problem on the privatization of sports — as public investment in school-based athletics dwindles, expensive private leagues have grown, leaving many kids out. In addition to fewer opportunities at school, researchers cite increased screen time and a lack of safe places for them to play outside the home. New York City, for example, had 2,067 public playgrounds as of 2019 — a very small amount for its large population. In Los Angeles in 2015, only 33 percent of youths lived within walking distance of a park.
Kids everywhere need more places to play. Public funding to build and keep up these areas is crucial, but other options such as shared-use agreements can make unused spaces available to the public. These opportunities aren’t primarily about changing children’s waistlines — they’re how we keep childhood healthy and fun.
28. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs
A. Childhood obesity is well under control in recent years.
B. Weight-loss surgery are recommended to children 12 and older.
C. AAP plays a more active role in fighting against childhood obesity.
D. Expensive as it is, lifestyle programs are practical for most children.
29. The underlined word “dwindle” is closest in meaning to ______.
A. decline B. quit C. increase D. develop
30. In the author’s opinion, what measures should be taken to create more safe areas
A. Prepare fitness equipment at home.
B. Live within walking distance of a park.
C. Promote investment in private athletics.
D. Open up playgrounds when school’s out.
31. What’s the main idea of the text
A. Sports play an important role in children’s growth.
B. More safe areas for outdoor fun are in urgent need.
C. Family-oriented lifestyles are crucial to children’s health.
D. Medical intervention is important to ease psychological burden.
【答案】28. C 29. A 30. D 31. B

Scientists have calculated the total amount of plastic ever made: 8.3 billion tons. Looked at another way, that’s as heavy as 25, 000 Empire State Buildings or one billion elephants. And incredibly, almost all of it has been made in the last 65 years.
______ Much plastic is in the form of packaging which is used just once and then thrown away. According to a major new study from the University of California, 9% of this is recycled, 12% is completely burnt and 79% goes to landfill. And because most plastic is not easily disposed of, once it’s in the ground, it stays there.
It’s a situation that has led the paper’s lead author, ecologist Dr. Roland Geyer, to say that we are “rapidly heading towards ‘Planet Plastic’”. The team behind this report also estimate that eight million tons of plastic waste are escaping into the sea every year. This has caused concern that plastic is entering the food chain, through fish and other sea life which swallow the smaller fragments.
Of course, the reason why there’s so much plastic around is that it’s an amazingly useful material. It’s durable and adaptable, and is used for everything from yoghurt pots to spaceships. But it’s exactly this quality that makes it a problem. The only way to destroy plastic is to heat or burn it — although this has the side effect of harmful emissions.
So what’s the alternative, other than using less plastic Oceanographer Dr. Erik van Sebille from Utrecht University says we’re facing a “tsunami” of plastic waste, and that the global waste industry needs to “get its act together”.
Professor Richard Thompson, a marine biologist from Plymouth University, says it’s poor design that’s at fault. He says that if products are currently designed “with recyclability in mind”, they could be recycled around 20 times over.
32. Which of the following is the best topic sentence for paragraph two
A. So where does the plastic go
B. So why is much plastic thrown away
C. So what’s the problem
D. So how is the plastic disposed of
33. How might plastic enter the food we eat
A. By being eaten and absorbed by sea creatures. B. By being used as useful materials.
C. By getting into the food market directly. D. By getting into the deep sea.
34. Which of the following might Richard Thompson agree with
A. Plastic waste has caused tsunami.
B. The design of products should be environmentally friendly.
C. Plastics are currently recycled over 20 times.
D. Global waste industry is to blame for the plastic waste problem.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Global Waste Industry B. Recyclability of Plastics
C. Planet Plastic D. Plastic Waste into the Sea

第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳答案。选项中有两项为多余选项。
When high school students spend time memorizing and reciting a poem, they develop confidence by engaging deeply with language. Here are my five Cs—things I’ve observed from several years of teaching students through Poetry Out Loud, from selecting a poem to performing at the state competition.
____36____ This is the first step of the exercise. Students learn how to search for poems, and they have complete discretion over the poem they will perform. Students often gravitate to poems that fit their reading level and also match a personal interest or philosophy, which is great. But there are also lots of unexpected mismatches that end up stretching students’ skills in ways a teacher could not work out.
Concrete learning task. Learning just one poem well gives students a finite and concentrated experience with language. And every student can learn one poem. I’ve seen students with all manner of challenges get up and do something they thought was impossible, ____37____
Continuing learning. Students learn a poem that will likely stay with them for years, if not forever. Poems contain mysteries and complexities that reveal themselves slowly—and sometimes even suddenly —over time. ____38____
Confidence. ____39____ All students need to be able to speak effectively in front of others. Performing a poem is a bit like acting. Students learn elements of physical presence, voice, speed, volume, and tone without having to present their own work, which is more frightening for most students.
Challenging memory and recall. Students are not asked to memorize much anymore, yet many of them take pleasure in the act of repetition and remembering. ____40____ For English language learners, many autistic students, and other exceptional learners, reciting poetry is an especially powerful way to understand language and build confidence. For our kids who need small victories, mastering one poem is a welcome relief.
A. Chance.
B. Choice.
C. so you can rely on it that you can recite poems.
D. Therefore, it is a lasting course to learn poems.
E. in large part because it involves a single, repeated exercise.
F. Recitation is the perfect introduction to public speaking skills.
G. They like testing themselves and realizing that they can in fact recall lines.
【答案】36. B 37. E 38. D 39. F 40. G
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。主要讲的是作者通过Poetry Out Loud教学生的几年里观察到的学生学习的方法。
【36题详解】
根据后文“This is the first step of the exercise.
Learning just one poem well gives students a finite and concentrated experience with language. And every student can learn one poem. I’ve seen students with all manner of challenges get up and do something they thought was impossible (具体学习任务。学好一首诗能让学生获得有限而集中的语言体验。每个学生都可以学习一首诗。我看到学生们面对各种各样的挑战,站起来做一些他们认为不可能的事情)”可知,本句为本段最后一句,故承接上文,说明学生选择做不可能的事情的原因,故E选项“在很大程度上是因为它涉及一个单一的,重复的练习。”符合语境,故选E。
【38题详解】
空前说“Students learn a poem that will likely stay with them for years, if not forever. Poems contain mysteries and complexities that reveal themselves slowly- and sometimes even suddenly-over time. (学生们学到一首诗可能会伴随他们很多年,甚至永远。诗歌包含着神秘和复杂,它们会随着时间慢慢地——有时甚至是突然地——展现出来。)”可知,学诗对学生的影响是持久的,故D选项“因此,学诗是一门持久的课程。”符合语境,故选D。
【39题详解】
根据后文“All students need to be able to speak effectively in front of others. Performing a poem is a bit like acting. Students learn elements of physical presence, voice, speed, volume, and tone without having to present their own work, which is more frightening for most students. (所有的学生都需要能够在别人面前有效地说话。朗诵一首诗有点像演戏。学生们不必展示自己的作品,就能学习物理存在、声音、速度、音量和语调等元素,这对大多数学生来说更可怕。)”可知,后文提到了对朗诵的看法,F选项中Recitation对应后文Performing a poem。故F选项“朗诵是公开演讲技巧的完美入门。”符合语境,故选F。
【40题详解】
根据上文“Students are not asked to memorize much anymore, yet many of them take pleasure in the act of repetition and remembering. (学生们不再被要求记忆太多,但他们中许多人却以重复和记忆为乐。)”可知,本句承接上文,说明许多人以重复和记忆为乐的原因,G选项中They对应上文many of them。故G选项“他们喜欢测试自己,并意识到他们实际上可以回忆台词。”符合语境,故选G。

Tom lost his father when he was very young, leaving his mother to care for him and his sister, Cathy, alone. Tom knew his sister desired to have a bike, so he had been saving his pocket money.
Tom shook his money box again. Nothing! He carefully counted the coins that lay on the bed. $24.52 was all that he had saved. The bicycle Cathy wanted was $90! How on earth was he going to get the rest of the money He knew that all of Cathy’s friends had bicycles. It was hard to hang around with her friends when she was the only one without a bicycle. He thought about what he could do. There was no need to ask his mom because he knew she had no spare money.
There was only one way to get money, and that was to make it. He would have to find a job. But who would hire him and what could he do He decided to ask Mr. Clay for advice, who usually had opinions on most things. “Well, you can start right here,” said Mr. Clay. “My windows need cleaning and my car needs washing.” That was the beginning of Tom’s odd-job business. He worked every day after finishing his homework. He forgot the number of cars he washed and windows he cleaned, but the money increased and he knew that he would have enough money for the bicycle which Cathy was longing for.
The day before Cathy’s eleventh birthday, Tom counted his money and found $94.32. He wasted no time and went down to the shop to pick up the bicycle Cathy wanted. It was red, which was her favorite color.

Cathy came over to her brother and gave him a bear hug, saying, “Thank you, Tom! You are the best brother in the world.”
“Where did you get the money for the bike ” Cathy asked Tom after the party. Excited and confident, Tom told her the truth that he spent his spare time doing many different jobs. “No wonder you went out early and stayed late. Aren’t you tired of all this work ” Cathy asked, with tears of gratitude in her eyes. “Physically, but not mentally,” Tom replied. “You see, hard work has paid off in the end. I am so proud that I have achieved what I once thought impossible.”

23. What do the last two paintings have in common
A. They were the same in size. B. They had more than one copy.
C. They were signed by the artist D. They were painted on the ground.

When I entered Oxford University I wasn’t particularly interested in joining the rowing club.

26. Why did they lose the game
A. A group member made a mistake. B. The opponents were too strong.
C. They were worn out. D. They hurt their legs.
27. Which can be the best title of the text
A. Nothing is impossible. B. Trying your best is the best award.

67. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之成为一篇完整的短文。
