A Bachelor of Arts degree requires basic skills in a second language. It means you have to complete two years of university-level language study. I was lucky because I had studied Spanish before, though I wasn’t good at it, so I chose this language to learn at college. But that first day of Spanish class practicing mock(模拟的) conversations in an overcrowded room felt like the worst days of middle school Spanish classes. I felt I was not improving.
After my first year in college, I decided to travel to a Spanish-speaking country for part of the summer to improve my Spanish. I traveled to Guatemala for three weeks study: two in Quetzaltenango, which is a mid-sized town, and one in rural area. I lived with a host family, had one-on-one language classes, learned traditional weaving, and drank the most delicious hot chocolate I have ever tasted and went to strange places by myself. I communicated. I learned.
It was not until I traveled that I discovered the power of a second language. I had opened the door to conversations with people on a whole continent. By the time I did my official study abroad in Valdivia, Chile for the spring quarter of my second year of college, I was already at a fluent speaking level. I could make friends. I could talk about ideas and people’s lives. I could ask questions. I could be myself.
When you’re trying to learn a second language in a classroom, you’re surrounded by other people who also don’t speak the language. So whatever stage of language learning you’re now at, try to push yourself to find a couple of non-class opportunities to improve your skills. If you’re in a university town, there are probably language learners looking for language partners. There are increasing opportunities for formal and informal tutoring online in various languages. They’re all out there; it’s just up to you to find them.
4. How did the author most probably find his Spanish class at college
A. Useful. B. Interesting. C. Disappointing. D. Challenging.
5. What did the author do in Guatemala

6. What can be learned about the author from Paragraph3
A. He traveled a lot during college.
B. He found language learning difficult.
C. He had a difficult time in Valdivia.
D. He made great progress in Spanish.
7. Why does the author write the text
A. To advertise online language classes.
B. To encourage language learners to put the language to use.
C. To show the power of a second language.
D. To explain how to get a Bachelor of Arts degree.
【答案】4. C 5. A 6. D 7. B

By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare time though he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova — not as a musician but as her page turner. “I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.”
Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group’s official page turner for the past four years. His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves. He said he became just as nervous as those playing instruments on stage.
“A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot.” Mr Titterton explained.
Being a page turner requires plenty of practice. Some pieces of music can go for 40 minutes and require up to 50 page turns, including back turns for repeat passages. Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.
But like all performances, there are moments when things go wrong. “I was turning the page to get ready for the next page, but the draft wind from the turn caused the spare pages to fall off the stand,” Mr Titterton said, “Luckily I was able to catch them and put them back.”
Most page turners are piano students or up-and-coming concert pianists, although Ms Raspopova has once asked her husband to help her out on stage.
“My husband is the worst page turner,” she laughed. “He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: ‘Turn, turn!’ Robert is the best page turner I’ve had in my entire life.”
8. What should Titterton be able to do to be a page turner
A. Read music. B. Play the piano.
C. Sing songs. D. Fix the instruments.
9. Which of the following best describes Titterton’s job on stage
A. Boring. B. Well-paid.
C. Demanding. D. Dangerous.
10. What does Titterton need to practise
A. Counting the pages. B. Recognizing the “nodding”.
C. Catching falling objects. D. Performing in his own style.
11. Why is Ms Raspopova’s husband “the worst page turner”
A. He has very poor eyesight. B. He ignores the audience.
C. He has no interest in music. D. He forgets to do his job.
【答案】8. A 9. C 10. B 11. D
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇记叙文。主要讲述了为钢琴演奏者做翻页工作的Robert Titterton和他的工作情况。
【8题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.(我不是受过训练的音乐家,但我学会了识谱,这样我就可以在Maria的表演中帮助她)”可知,因为Titterton识谱,所以可以在Maria的钢琴表演中为她翻页。故选A项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“A lot of skills are needed for the job. You have to make sure you don’t turn two pages at once and make sure you find the repeats in the music when you have to go back to the right spot.(这项工作需要很多技能。你必须确保你不会一次翻两页并且必要的时候确保你回到前面找到音乐重复的部分)”可知,为钢琴家翻页这项工作很需要技巧,所以Titterton的工作要求是很高的。故选C项。
10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Silent onstage communication is key, and each pianist has their own style of “nodding” to indicate a page turn which they need to practise with their page turner.(无声的舞台交流是关键,每个钢琴家都有自己的“点头”风格来表示翻页,他们需要和翻页者进行练习)”可知,Titterton需要练习识别钢琴演奏者的“点头”示意来翻页。故选B项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“He’s interested in the music, feeling every note, and I have to say: ‘Turn, turn!’(他对音乐很感兴趣,感受着每一个音符,所以我不得不说:“翻页,翻页!”)”可知,Ms Raspopova的丈夫因为对音乐感兴趣,所以帮她翻页的时候总是沉浸在音乐中而忘掉自己的工作,她不得不去提醒。故选D项。

Avoid the supermarket shelves piled with cheese, cupcakes and pies. That is the message of an analysis that found these items are the worst when looking at both nutritional and environmental impacts of thousands of food and drink products sold in the UK and Ireland. So far, most studies have focused on the environmental impact of goods such as beef or beans, rather than tofu and other products that shoppers often buy. Where research has focused on such products, it has usually been for a small number of them.
In a bid to bridge the gap, Micheal Clark at the University of Oxford and his colleagues analyzed more than 57,000 food and drink products sold in the UK and Ireland. The team took the ingredients (成份) data from eight retailers (零售商), including major supermarkets Tesco and Sainsbury’s. However, precise figures on how much of each ingredient is in each product were only available for around a tenth of them. To estimate the rest, Clark and his colleagues trained an algorithm (算法) on the known products and used it to predict the composition of the unknown ones. Finally, the team linked all the ingredients to an existing database of environmental impacts, including emissions (排放), land use and water stress.
The results may come as no surprise: meat, fish and cheese products had highest environmental impact while fruit, vegetables, bread and sugary drink products had the lowest burden. Clark admits that none of this is exciting, given what we already knew from past research. “What is important is that you can start getting these impact estimates for products that people are purchasing, which then has a lot of effects,” he says.
One of those is eco-lables, which can help consumers to make greener choices. However, retailers have struggled in the past with the challenge of the large number of food. Clark is thinking about how to eventually turn the data into an app that could be used either by shoppers or by retailers wanting to reduce their environmental impact. “We’ve made that information available in a way that means people can start making informed decisions,” he says.
12. What is the purpose of Clark’s study
A. To solve the environmental problems with some products.
B. To point out the mistakes of the previous research.
C. To focus on the important ingredients data from retailers.
D To estimate the environmental impact of frequently-bought products.
13. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The process of Clark’s study. B. The result of Clark’s study.
C. The significance of Clark’s study. D. The limitation of Clark’s study.
14. What can be inferred about Clark’s study from Paragraph 3
A. Surprising. B. Worrying. C. Meaningful. D. Doubtful.
15. Which of the following products should people buy according to Clark’s study
A. Nutritious food like beef and eggs. B. Green food like carrots and bananas.
C. Healthy food like fish and tofu. D. Fresh food like milk and chicken
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. B
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文,主要介绍的是针对食物对环境的影响的研究。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第一段的“So far, most studies have focused on the environmental impact of goods such as beef or beans, rather than tofu and other products that shoppers often buy.(到目前为止,大多数研究都集中在牛肉或豆类等商品对环境的影响上,而不是豆腐和其他消费者经常购买的产品。)”和第二段的“In a bid to bridge the gap, Micheal Clark at the University of Oxford and his colleagues analyzed more than 57,000 food and drink products sold in the UK and Ireland.(为了弥补这一差距,牛津大学的Micheal Clark和他的同事分析了在英国和爱尔兰销售的57000多种食品和饮料。)”可知,克拉克研究的目的是评估经常购买的产品对环境的影响。故选D。
【13题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段的“The team took the ingredients (成份) data from eight retailers (零售商), including major supermarkets Tesco and Sainsbury’s. However, precise figures on how much of each ingredient is in each product were only available for around a tenth of them. To estimate the rest, Clark and his colleagues trained an algorithm (算法) on the known products and used it to predict the composition of the unknown ones. Finally, the team linked all the ingredients to an existing database of environmental impacts, including emissions (排放), land use and water stress.(研究小组从8家零售商那里获取了配料数据,其中包括大型超市乐购和塞恩斯伯里。然而,关于每种产品中每种成分含量的精确数据仅为其中的十分之一左右。为了估计剩下的,克拉克和他的同事们在已知产物上训练了一种算法,并用它来预测未知产物的组成。最后,研究小组将所有成分与现有的环境影响数据库联系起来,包括排放、土地使用和水资源压力。)”可知,第二段主要讲的是克拉克的研究过程。故选A。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的“What is important is that you can start getting these impact estimates for products that people are purchasing, which then has a lot of effects(重要的是,你可以开始对人们正在购买的产品进行这些影响评估,这会产生很多影响)”可知,从第3段可以推断出克拉克的研究是有意义的。故选C。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段的“The results may come as no surprise: meat, fish and cheese products had highest environmental impact while fruit, vegetables, bread and sugary drink products had the lowest burden.(研究结果可能并不令人惊讶:肉类、鱼类和奶酪产品对环境的影响最大,而水果、蔬菜、面包和含糖饮料产品对环境的影响最低。)”和最后一段的“One of those is eco-lables, which can help consumers to make greener choices.(其中之一就是生态标签,它可以帮助消费者做出更环保的选择。)”可知,根据克拉克的研究,人们应该购买绿色食物,如胡萝卜和香蕉。故选B。

A. He took private Spanish classes.
B. He taught the locals to weave.
C. He traveled all around the country.
D. He explored strange places with friends.

By day, Robert Titterton is a lawyer. In his spare time though he goes on stage beside pianist Maria Raspopova — not as a musician but as her page turner. “I’m not a trained musician, but I’ve learnt to read music so I can help Maria in her performance.”
Mr Titterton is chairman of the Omega Ensemble but has been the group’s official page turner for the past four years His job is to sit beside the pianist and turn the pages of the score so the musician doesn’t have to break the flow of sound by doing it themselves.

C. Demanding. D. Dangerous.
10. What does Titterton need to practise
A. Counting the pages. B. Recognizing the “nodding”.
C. Catching falling objects. D. Performing in his own style.
11. Why is Ms Raspopova’s husband “the worst page turner”
A. He has very poor eyesight. B. He ignores the audience.
C. He has no interest in music. D. He forgets to do his job.

12 What is the purpose of Clark’s study
A. To solve the environmental problems with some products.
B. To point out the mistakes of the previous research.
C. To focus on the important ingredients data from retailers.
D. To estimate the environmental impact of frequently-bought products.
13. What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about
A. The process of Clark’s study. B. The result of Clark’s study.
C. The significance of Clark’s study. D. The limitation of Clark’s study.
14. What can be inferred about Clark’s study from Paragraph 3
A. Surprising. B. Worrying. C. Meaningful. D. Doubtful.
15. Which of the following products should people buy according to Clark’s study
A. Nutritious food like beef and eggs. B. Green food like carrots and bananas.
C. Healthy food like fish and tofu. D. Fresh food like milk and chicken
