Get up at 6 a.m., arrive at the hospital one hour earlier to help patients check in, and accompany patients during consultations... In recent years, the patient escort has emerged as a new occupation, and those who have taken on this career are known as “people who sell time”. 26-year-old Zhang Tian is one of them.
September 4, 2022 was a lucky day for Zhang Tian. On this day, Zhang Tian saw a video about patient escorts on a short video platform. The daily routine of patient escorts shown in the video fascinated her and inspired her to take this on as a business. She browsed through many platforms and searched for information and found there indeed exists a certain demand for patient escorts, especially for the elderly, children and pregnant women. Since she had never engaged in this kind of work before, she spent two days in major hospitals in Wuhan, in order to familiarize herself with all the departments on different floors, as well as the processes of medical consultations and preparations for surgery.
After the preparations, Zhang Tian posted a video of self-introduction on major social media sites, talking about the help and services a patient escort provides, as well as some tips for a quick and convenient medical consultation. At first, she was a little worried that her video would go unnoticed. However, after she uploaded the video, it got over 100 likes and she received her first offer as a patient escort.
The memory of her first task is still vivid in her mind. She received a phone call on September 9 from a man whose father was seriously ill and might need surgery. He wanted Zhang Tian to accompany his father through his consultation and treatment. Zhang Tian made all the preparations before meeting her first client and did a very good job despite her nervousness.
“Later, the family expressed their gratitude to me over and over again, which warmed my heart and gave me a sense of achievement,” Zhang Tian said.

One of the ocean’s noisiest creatures is smaller than you’d expect — snapping shrimp (鼓虾). They create a widespread background noise in the underwater environment, which helps them communicate, protect their homes and hunt for food. When enough shrimp snap (发出噼啪声) at once, the noise can be deafening.
Aran Mooney, a biologist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, suggested that with increased ocean temperatures, snapping shrimp will snap more often and louder than before. This could raise the background noise of the global ocean. “They make a sound by closing a claw so fast. This makes a bubble (泡泡) and when that bubble bursts, it makes that snapping sound,” said Mooney.
Mooney discovered a strong relationship between warmer waters and more frequent snapping shrimp sounds after experimenting with the shrimp in tanks in the lab and by listening to the shrimp in the ocean at various water temperatures. “As the temperature rises, the snap rate increases,” he said. This makes sense because shrimp are essentially cold-blooded animals, meaning their body temperature and activity levels are largely controlled by their living environment. “We can actually show in the field that not only do snap rates increase, but the sound levels increase as well.”
How the louder snapping shrimp would affect or benefit the surroundings remained to be seen. “We know that fish use sound to communicate,” Mooney said. “If the environment gets noisy, it has the possibility to influence that communication. That’s something we have to follow up on.” There is also the possibility that the change of snapping shrimp affects machines humans use to discover mines, which could lead to unpleasant results.
8.What can we know about the snapping shrimp’s sound
A.It aims to protect the shrimp. B.It is important to the ecosystem.
C.It has different uses for the shrimp. D.It is hard to be discovered by other creatures.
9.How does Mooney do the experiment
A.By observing snapping shrimp in the field.
B.By recording the snap rates in the lab.
C.By analyzing the way shrimp make noise.
D.By comparing shrimp’s sound in different places.
10.What might Mooney research next
A.Other uses of shrimp’s sound. B.Influences of the noise on other creatures.
C.Means of communication among fish. D.Methods of stopping shrimp’s snapping.
11.Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A.Underwater World Is No Longer Quiet B.Small Animals Make a Big Difference
C.Warming Oceans Are Getting Louder D.Snapping Shrimp’s Noise Speaks Much
D
In many restaurants worldwide, there’s a new sight — child-sized robots. These robots can welcome guests, show them to their tables, deliver food and drinks, and even transport dirty dishes back to the kitchen. Some believe these robot waiters could be a solution to today’s worker shortages (短缺,不足) in the restaurant industry, with tens of thousands of them now in use.
But other people think that robots can’t replace (取代) human workers. Robot waiters can’t take orders, and they struggle with steps, limiting their abilities.
Although there are disadvantages, their use is growing. For example, in Madison Heights, Michigan, Li Zhai faced difficulty finding enough workers for his restaurant. To address this, he bought robots from Pudu Robotics. These robots have been a success, with one leading guests to their seats, another delivering food, and a third transporting dirty dishes.
Zhai found that using these robots reduced his need for employees. Three robots now do the work of what used to need five or six people. And a robot costs around $15,000, while a human can cost 5,000 to 6,000 per month. These robots also have a surprising benefit—they free up human servers to spend more time with customers, resulting in increased tips. Additionally, diners (用餐者) often share videos of the robots on social media, attracting more visitors to the restaurant.
However, not all restaurants have had the same success. For example, Chili’s (奇利斯餐厅) introduced robot servers in 2020, but were criticized (批评) for their slow movement and getting in the way of human servers. A survey showed that 58% of guests believed the robots didn’t improve their overall dining experience.
12.What is the purpose of the first paragraph
A.To discuss the advantages of hiring human workers in restaurants.
B.To describe the shortages of child-sized robots in restaurants.
C.To show the success of robot waiters in restaurants.
D.To introduce a survey about robot waiters.
13.What does the underlined word “address” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A.narrow B.solve C.face D.explore
14.According to Paragraph 4, what is Zhai’s attitude towards robot servers
A.Uncaring. B.Dissatisfied. C.Positive. D.Doubtful.
15.What can be inferred from the passage
A.The use of robot waiters still has a long way to go.
B.All restaurants with robot servers are successful.
C.The restaurant industry is not affected by worker shortages.
D.Restaurant bosses won’t employ robot waiters.

Anderson replied. “I gave my everything to my business and yet it didn’t make it.”
The teacher tried to comfort him, saying “But that’s life. Sometimes we get success and sometimes we don’t. This doesn’t mean that we stop working.”

The teacher said. “You’d better not think like that...”
“What’s wrong with that... I have given so much hard work, so much money, so much times if success is only a matter of chance, then what is the use of doing so much ” said Anderson, being about to leave.
