Kelli Boehle says her son Nik was an amazing and caring person. Nik was diagnosed(诊断) with cancer in 2008 when he was 17. He passed away in 2012. But Nik’s kindness and generosity have lived on long after his death.
After he was diagnosed and started treatment, Nik was granted (给予) a wish experience from the Make-A-Wish Foundation. “For just this period of time, we didn’t think about cancer, ”Kelli Boehle said. “All we thought about was enjoying our time together. ”

The human body is designed to move. But modern lifestyles and office jobs rarely give us the chance to move around. As we know, we sit while we’re eating, we sit in the car and we sit while we’re watching TV. And many of us sit for many hours at work.
New research shows that sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years. Peter Katzmarzyk, a scientist at the University of Louisiana in the southern United States, says that sitting is ubiquitous in our lives, meaning it is something we do all the time, everywhere.
However, Mr. Katzmarzyk says even that does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours. He also says you may exercise often. “We can’t throw away physical activity. It’s extremely important. We have 60 years of research showing us that.”
Mr. Katzmarzyk and his colleagues are part of a new generation of researchers studying how sitting all day affects length of life. “Studies that have assessed the relationship between sitting and mortality (死亡率) or television viewing and mortality are very rare. There have only been a few of studies, actually five or six now, in the last four or five years.” They found that cutting television time to less than two hours a day could add one-point four years to life.
Luckily, change is already coming to some offices, especially in the design of desks. A “standing desk” lets people stand while they are working. Another new design is called the “treadmill desk”. A treadmill is an exercise machine that lets you walk in one place. Even some U.S. schools are beginning to experiment with desks that are part bicycle to keep children moving, that’s one of the strategies that many companies are using now.
Mr. Katzmarzyk also says studying this problem has inspired his team to make a few changes in their own lives.
8. The underlined word “ubiquitous” may mean ______.
A. dangerous B. embarrassing C. comfortable D. common
9. Which view agrees with the opinion of Mr. Katmarzyk
A. Exercise is important, but so is not sitting.
B. Watching TV is bad, but can broaden one’s horizons.
C. Sitting too long may help increase one’s life.
D. Stopping watching TV is a necessary but hard task.
10. What does Mr. Katzmarzyk think of his study in Paragraph 4
A. It’s totally ignored by many experts. B. It’s a relatively new area of study.
C. It’s a study that begins too late. D. It’s a hot subject studied by experts.
11. Why is there change in the design of desks at some offices
A. To give workers more comfort. B. To improve workers’ work efficiency.
C. To offer workers the chance to exercise. D. To let workers seek pleasure while working.
D 9. A 10. B 11. C
根据“Peter Katzmarzyk, a scientist at the University of Louisiana in the southern United States, says that sitting is ubiquitous in our lives, meaning it is something we do all the time, everywhere. (美国南部路易斯安那大学的科学家彼得·卡茨马齐克说,坐着在我们的生活中ubiquitous,这意味着这是我们一直做的事情,无处不在。)”可知,我们几乎无时无地的都会坐着,因此坐这个动作是我们生活中常见的动作,由此猜测ubiquitous的意思是“处处可见的、普遍的”。故选D项。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段第一句“New research shows that sitting less than three hours a day might extend your life by two years. (新的研究表明,每天坐不到三小时可能会延长你两年的寿命。)”,以及第三段“However, Mr.Katzmarzyk says even that does not mean you can sit for the rest of your waking hours. He also says you may exercise often. ‘We can’t throw away physical activity. It’s extremely important. We have 60 years of research showing us that.’ (然而,卡兹马兹克先生表示,这并不意味着你可以在醒着的其他时间里坐着。他还说你可以经常锻炼。‘我们不能放弃体育活动。这是非常重要的。我们做了60年的研究证明了这一点。’)”可知,不要久坐,可以延长寿命,醒着的时候不能老是坐着,这些时间你也可以用来锻炼。由此可知,Mr. Katmarzyk认为运动对我们来说很重要,不久坐也很重要。故选A项。
根据第四段第二句“Studies that have assessed the relationship between sitting and mortality (死亡率) or television viewing and mortality are very rare. There have only been a few of them, actually five or six now,in the last four or five years. (很少有研究评估久坐与死亡率或看电视与死亡率之间的关系。在过去的四五年里,只有过几次(研究),实际上,有五六次吧。)”可知,关于“久坐与死亡率”的这一方面的研究还不多,只是近四五年来才开始研究。由此推知,Mr. Katmarzyk认为这是一个相对较新的研究领域。故选B项。
【11题详解】
细节理解题。根据第五段第二句“A ‘standing desk’ lets people stand while they are working. Another new design is called the ‘treadmill desk’. A treadmill is an exercise machine that lets you walk in one place. (‘站立式办公桌’可以让人们在工作时站立。另一种新设计被称为‘跑步机办公桌’。跑步机是一种让你在一个地方行走的锻炼机器。)”可知,文中提及的这些桌子可以让人站着工作,或者边走路边工作,对于那些坐的时间很长的人来说,是为他们提供锻炼的机会,故选C项。
D
While an analysis of the Global Dietary Database for the years 1990, 2005, and 2018 found overall consumption of sweetened drinks increased—by nearly 16% worldwide over the 28-year period studied—regional intake widely varied, researchers say.
Sugary drinks have been widely associated with overweight and heart related diseases, which are among the leading causes of death and years lost to disability globally. Many national guidelines recommend limiting added sugars to less than 5% to 10% of daily calories, and because sodas (汽水) add no nutritional value, some countries tax their consumption to help their residents meet this goal.
The study, published in Nature Communications, is the latest presentation of how adults in 185 countries drink sugar-sweetened beverages (饮料). Intakes varied widely by world region. In 2018, the average person consumed 2.7 servings of sugary drinks per week, but this ranged from 0.7 servings per week in South Asia to 7.8 servings per week in Latin America. And some of the highest sugary drink intakes in the world were among urban, highly educated adults in Sub-Saharan Africa (12.4 servings per week) and in Latin America (8.5 servings per week). “We were struck by the wide variations by world regions in 2018; that Latin America had the largest intakes at all time points despite an overall decrease overtime; and that Sub-Saharan Africa had the greatest increases across all time points,” says Laura Lara-Castor, a PhD candidate at Tufts University.
“These results suggest that more work is needed such as marketing regulations, food labeling, and soda taxes.” Information from the Global Dietary Database, which gathers hundreds of survey results, also revealed a relationship between sugary beverages and socio-economic status. “Sugar-sweetened beverage intake has increased in the past few decades despite efforts to decrease their appeal,” says researchers. “Some populations are especially easily affected, and our findings provide evidence to inform the need and design of national and more targeted policies to reduce their intake worldwide.”
12. What is the main concern about sugary drinks
A. They are just a barrier to weight loss. B. They are linked to health issues.
C. They are far from nutrition standard. D. They are a total waste of money.
13. Why do some countries tax the consumption of sodas
A. To increase income for the government. B. To promote the sales of healthier drinks.
C. To discourage people from drinking sodas. D. To set a limit to the price of sugary drinks.
14. What is the primary focus of the study published in Nature Communications
A. Sugary drink consumption trends. B. Impact of soda taxes on purchases.
C. Regional variations in dietary habits. D. Global dietary information analysis.
15. What can we infer from the results of the study
A Sugary drinks have nothing to do with economic status.
B. The appeal of sugary drinks cannot be underestimated.
C. Some people are very particular about the sugary drinks.
D. National policies on sugary drinks are more than enough.
B 13. C 14. C 15. B

根据第二段中“Many national guidelines recommend limiting added sugars to less than 5% to 10% of daily calories, and because sodas (汽水) add no nutritional value, some countries tax their consumption to help their residents meet this goal. (许多国家的指导方针建议将添加糖限制在每日热量的5%至10%以下,由于汽水没有增加营养价值,一些国家对其消费征税,以帮助其居民实现这一目标。)”可知,有的国家对汽水增加税收是为了让人们少喝没有营养价值的汽水,达到控制每日糖摄入量的目的。故选C。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。 根据第三段“The study, published in Nature Communications, is the latest presentation of how adults in 185 countries drink sugar-sweetened beverages (饮料). Intakes varied widely by world region. In 2018, the average person consumed 2.7 servings of sugary drinks per week, but this ranged from 0.7 servings per week in South Asia to 7.8 servings per week in Latin America. 【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段““Sugar-sweetened beverage intake has increased in the past few decades despite efforts to decrease their appeal,” says researchers. “Some populations are especially easily affected, and our findings provide evidence to inform the need and design of national and more targeted policies to reduce their intake worldwide.” (研究人员说:“尽管人们努力降低含糖饮料的吸引力,但在过去的几十年里,含糖饮料的摄入量却在增加。”“一些人群特别容易受到影响,我们的研究结果为各国制定更有针对性的政策以减少全球范围内的摄入提供了证据。”)”可知,在过去的几十年里,尽管在努力降低含糖饮料的吸引力,但其摄入量仍在增加,由此可知,含糖饮料的吸引力不容小觑。故选B。

When I was about ten years old, my brother and I received a wonderful gift — tennis rackets and balls. We had never had the opportunity to play tennis, so this was exciting. However, there was one problem — the small town we lived in did not have a tennis court.
One Sunday morning my brother said, “Hey, I’ve got an idea. Let’s take our tennis rackets and balls to the school and hit the balls against the school building.”
“Great idea! Let’s go,” I agreed, not realizing what a lesson we would learn before the experience was over.
When we got to the school ground, no one was around, so we began hitting our balls against the side of the two-story brick building.
“I’ll hit it the first time,” my brother suggested, “then you hit it the next time. We’ll hit it back and forth to each other.”
So we began taking turns hitting the ball, getting more confident with each stroke. Actually, we became pretty good at returning the ball and we were hitting the ball higher and faster each time.
Suddenly, the unthinkable happened — the ball got out of control and went crashing through one of the upstairs windows.
We looked around and no one was in sight — except there was an old man stting on a porch halfway down the block.
Quietly, I asked, “Now what should we do Our ball is inside the school.”
“Well,” my brother responded, “no one will know whose ball it is. And no one saw us, except that old man down there. And he probably can’t see this far.”
“He probably doesn’t know who we are anyway,” I added.
“Let’s go home,” my brother suggested.
“Okay,” I agreed. “Should we tell Mom and Dad ”
“I don’t know,” my brother answered.
Then we picked up the rest of our balls and headed for home, keeping silent all the way with our heads drooping.

The following morning my brother and I went to the headmaster’s office.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】“What happened ” asked my mother, seeing us in low spirits. “Well,” my brother slowly began, “we hit the tennis ball too hard and too high and it went right through the school window”. “Oh, my goodness!” my mother exclaimed. After a short pause, her voice softened when she asked us if we had reported this to the school. Lips bitten, we shook our heads. “It will cost all of our pocket money”, I muttered. “But there is always something more important than money”, she said soothingly, patting me on the shoulder. Slowly lifting my head, I encountered my mother’s encouraging eyes and a decision was made.
The following morning my brother and I went to the headmaster’s office. Nervous and frightened, we inched into the office. There sat our stern-looking headmaster. “We have something to confess...”, we spilled our story with a hint of fear in our voices. He looked very somber and we were sure that the news was bad. Then he smiled, “I am proud of you kids for having the courage to tell me what happened”. He could see our relief as he continued, “Many windows had been broken, but you were the first ones to admit that you were responsible. For that, you don’t have to pay for the broken window, because honesty comes before anything else”.

In 2009, Nik met another young man Nate, who was also going through cancer treatment. He’d been diagnosed a month after turning 18, and Nik learned he was too old to qualify for a wish. The night before Nik passed away, he asked his mother to help ensure that young adults fighting cancer could have their wishes come true too.

For Morrow, who has spent the last year battling brain cancer, going to the concert has done more than lift her spirits. “I think it’s something to get me through whatever comes my way, ”she said. “And I’m thankful for Nik’s Wish for that. ”
In the 11 years since Nik passed away, the organization has granted more than 300 wishes across more than 30 states. In the beginning, Kelli Boehle says she wasn’t sure she could be a wish maker and work closely with the young adults. But now, it’s her favorite thing to do.

D
While an analysis of the Global Dietary Database for the years 1990, 2005, and 2018 found overall consumption of sweetened drinks increased—by nearly 16% worldwide over the 28-year period studied—regional intake widely varied, researchers say.
Sugary drinks have been widely associated with overweight and heart related diseases which are among the leading causes of death and years lost to disability globally.
