Recently, I was talking with a friend of mine about a mutual(共同的) friend of ours. “I wish I could be like Jenny. She always seems so happy. I’m not joking; I honestly think she has the perfect life,” said my friend.
If you were to look at the Instagram account of Jenny, you would indeed see what looks like the perfect life. However, despite the enviable content of her Instagram, I learned through a conversation with this girl that it was all carefully handled. Everything was put together to maintain the public image that she was a happy-go-lucky and carefree girl. When she was sad or upset, there was no indication of these emotions on her Instagram.
In fact, we all choose our online media presence. Look through your Instagram — I bet that you don’t post pictures where you don’t feel camera-ready. On Instagram, we always show our “good side”. Think about it. Would you rather post “I tried so hard but I ended up failing my test” or “ I treated myself to a hot coffee after studying hard all week”
We all want to present the best parts of our lives, to show what’s going well and what we’re proud of. We take photos of the nice things we own, or of any sorts of events considered “special”, such as invite-only or formal parties. We post photos of the good times rather than the bad times. No matter what happens, we try to make our online image perfect.
There’s absolutely nothing wrong with making your online presence perfect — everyone does it in some way or another. However, when it comes to feeling envious of someone else’s Instagram posts, remember that just like you, they’re showing their good side.
24. What’s Jenny’s life like indeed
A. She lives a perfect life. B. Her life is full of sadness.
C. Her life is boring and meaningless. D. She lives an ordinary life just like others.
25. What does the author consider common
A. That people dream of living a perfect life.
B. That people hide their bad side online.
C. That people love reading posts online.
D. That people want to please others online.
26. Which of the following statements would the author agree with
A. We shouldn’t perfect our online image.
B. We should always show our good side.
C. We should stop reading online stories.
D. We don’t need to envy others’ online presence.
27. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. A professor’s speech. B. A survey of people’s life.
C. A personal online account. D. An entertainment magazine.

By now, nearly everyone knows we can be addicted to our digital devices. The average smartphone user rarely goes two hours without using her device, unlocks her device 50 or more times a day, and swipes or taps on it as many as 2,617 times in the process. The youth are particularly affected: A 2018 Pew Research Center report found that 44 percent of teens said they often check their devices for messages or notifications as soon as they wake up, 54 percent said they spend too much time on their mobile phone, and 42 percent feel anxiety when they do not have it.
A device addiction is quite harmful. It is associated with depression and anxiety. According to the technology research firm Compare Camp, 26 percent of car accidents in the U.S. today are due to the use of smartphones while driving. These problems are obvious to almost everyone; the solutions, less so. Some experts suggest taxation to help limit digital overuse, similar to the way the government discourages tobacco use. Others say the only way to beat an addiction is to quit cold turkey and go device-free.
But in a world of electronic payments, digital documents, and remote work, a truly smartphone-free lifestyle is getting less and less practical. A better—and, for many of us, more reasonable—approach is to manage addictive behavior by moderating device use. This isn’t just a matter of setting screen-time limits you can easily break; rather, you can start to develop specific habits to replace the unhealthy ones that keep sending you back to your phone.
The digital-technology scholar Cal Newport recommends the “phone foyer” method, wherein he leaves his phone by the front door when he walks into his house, and doesn’t put it in his pocket until he leaves again. If he needs to look at it, he does so only in the foyer. Just as the Greek Stoic philosopher Epictetus taught in his Discourses, “No man is free who is not master of himself.”
32. How does the writer explain phone addiction in paragraph 1
A. By giving reasons. B. By listing numbers.
C. By raising questions. D. By making comparisons.
33. What does the underlined phrase “quit cold turkey” mean in paragraph 2
A. Charging a tax. B. Stop eating turkeys.
C. Stop using smartphones. D. Discouraging smoking.
34. Why does the author quote Epictetus in the last paragraph
A. To show respect to Epictetus. B. To prove the “phone foyer” method.
C. To advise people to be a master. D. To inspire people to get rid of phone addiciton.
35. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. How to Break a Phone Addiction B. Effect of Phone Addiction on Teens
C. Phone Addiction Ruins Our Freedom D. Device Addiction Contributes to Depression

An A for Mrs. Bartlett
I was sitting next to Missy in my ninth-grade world history class when Mrs. Bartlett announced a new project. In groups, we were to create a poster around what we were studying.
On a piece of paper, we wrote the names of three friends we wanted in our group. After collecting all the requests, Mrs. Bartlett informed us that she would take into consideration the names we chose and would let us know the results the next day. I was a well-rounded top student in the class, so I had no doubt I would get the group of my choice. There were only a handful of sociably decent people in the class, and Missy was one of them. I knew we had chosen each other.
The next day, I anxiously awaited the class. After the bell rang, Missy and I stopped talking as Mrs. Bartlett called for our attention. She started to call out names. When she reached group three, Missy’s name was called. So I’m in group three, I thought. The second, third and fourth members of the group were called. My name was not included. There had to be some mistake!
Then I heard it. The last group: “ Mauro, Juliette, Rachel, Karina. ” I could feel the tears well in my eyes. How could I face being in that group — the boy who barely spoke English, the one girl who was always covered by skirts that went down to her ankles, and the other girl who was often wearing very strange and unusual clothes with fancy items. They certainly fell into the category of the least popular in our class. They were considered misfits
There must be something wrong! Mrs. Bartlett was such a person of insight, vision and thoughtfulness that she never forgot to bring out the potential of all her students. Oh, how badly I wanted to be with my friends. Finally I was determined to convince her I should be in the “ good ” group.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 1:
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:

B 33. C 34. D 35. A
根据第一段关键句“The average smartphone user rarely goes two hours without using her device, unlocks her device 50 or more times a day, and swipes or taps on it as many as 2,617 times in the process.”(普通智能手机用户很少两个小时不使用她的设备,每天解锁设备50次或更多次,在此过程中刷或点击设备多达2617次)可知,第一段通过列出“two hours”、“50 or more times”和“2,617 times”等数字来表明电话成瘾的严重性,由此可知,作者通过列出数字解释第一段中的电话成瘾。
根据最后一段关键句“The digital-technology scholar Cal Newport recommends the “phone foyer” method, wherein he leaves his phone by the front door when he walks into his house, and doesn’t put it in his pocket until he leaves again. If he needs to look at it, he does so only in the foyer.”(数字技术学者Cal Newport建议采用“电话门厅”的方法,当他走进自己的房子时,把手机放在前门,直到再次离开才把手机放进口袋。如果他需要看的话,他只能在门厅里看)可知,最后一段告诉我们要学会控制我们使用手机的时间;最后一段中“No man is free who is not master of himself.”
通读全文,结合第一段关键句“By now, nearly everyone knows we can be addicted to our digital devices.”(到目前为止,几乎所有人都知道我们可能会沉迷于我们的数字设备)和最后一段关键句“The digital-technology scholar Cal Newport recommends the “phone foyer” method, wherein he leaves his phone by the front door when he walks into his house, and doesn’t put it in his pocket until he leaves again.”(数字技术学者Cal Newport建议采用“电话门厅”的方法,当他走进自己的房子时,把手机放在前门,直到再次离开才把手机放进口袋)可知,文章主要介绍了生活中电话成瘾的现象及打破电话成瘾的方法,“How to Break a Phone Addiction”意为“如何打破电话成瘾”,选项能够概括文章主要内容。故选A项。

上文“A social phobia (恐惧症) in an anxiety disorder with strong fear in social situations.”(社交恐惧症是一种焦虑障碍,在社交场合有强烈的恐惧。) People with social phobia feel fear, as well as nervousness, pain or shyness(患有社交恐惧症的人会感到恐惧、紧张、痛苦或害羞)为说明其症状表现,和下文构成一个复合句关系,上下文语意连贯。

以及下文“So we do not have to focus so much on what others may think of us, but on feeling comfortable with ourselves without having to be perfect.”(所以我们不需要太关注别人对我们的看法,而是要对自己感到舒适,而不必变得完美。) We have to learn to accept and trust ourselves.(我们必须学会接受和信任自己。)
该段下文“If we always avoid social situations out of fear, it is very difficult for us to be able to overcome them. If we try to relate to the outside of our usual circle, we will feel more comfortable little by little. In this way, when a social event arrives that we want to attend or take part in, we will be better able to be comfortable in it.”(如果我们总是出于恐惧而逃避社交场合,我们就很难克服它们。 故选A项。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph l:
I fought back tears as I walked up to Mrs. Bartlett. Before I opened my mouth, she gently placed a hand on my shoulder, saying with a knowing smile, “ I know what you want, but your group needs you. ” So stunned was I that I couldn’t utter a single word for a moment. She had seen something in me that I hadn’t seen. Suddenly, a mixture of guilt as well as pride seized me. The power of being trusted made me stand straighter. “ I’ll help them. ” I replied in a firm voice. I couldn’t believe it came out of my mouth, but it did.
Paragraph 2:
Halfway through the week, I felt myself enjoying the company of these three misfits. The project was going smoothly with our joint efforts. Besides, I found out Mauro was struggling with English, Juliette wore long skirts because of her religion and Rachel dreamed to be a fashion designer. They weren’t misfits, just people that no one cared enough about to try to understand — except Mrs. Bartlett. I was lucky to be given a chance to see other people in a new light. Mrs. Bartlett gave us an A on that assignment, which should be handed back, for she was the one who truly deserved it.
