Hannah Levine decided she wanted to give hugs to all of the children and families in need at local hospitals.
Because she couldn’t give them hugs one by one, Levine, then a sixth-grader, decided she would use her talents (才能) to do the next best thing. She began to knit (编织) hats, scarves, and blankets for families staying at the Ronald McDonald House at Stanford. Her creations also went to Bundle of Joy, a programme that provides newborn baby items for families in need, and to Knitting Pals by the Bay, a local organisation that provides hand-knitted caps to cancer patients.
“I love to knit, and I thought it would be a great idea to make all these handmade items for kids and adults who need them. It would be like a hug for them,” Levine explained.
Levine started the project about a year ago. “I think it’s just really fun to do, and it keeps me busy,” said Levine, now 13.
Once she got started, Levine realised that her project could be much bigger than the goods she was able to produce with just her own hands. So she sent emails to her school and communities, asking for knitted donations (捐赠物) to the project, she named “Hannah’s Warm Hugs”. She also posted advertisements at Starbucks and other locations in her area. The warm goods began to pour in.
“It was amazing; more strangers than people she knew started dropping donations at our door,” said Levine’s mother, Laura Levine. “We ended up with this huge box of items she was donating.”
The knitted items numbered in the hundreds. Levine made her first round of donations around Hanukkah (an eight-day Jewish holiday in November or December) and later received thank-you letters from the organisations. Levine is still knitting, and she said the project will continue.

Art is everywhere. Any public space has been carefully designed by an artistic mind to be both functional and beautiful. Then why is art still widely considered “the easy subject” at school, insignificant to wider society, a waste of time and effort
Art can connect culture with commercial products; art generates money and holds significant emotional and cultural value within communities. When people attend a concert, they are paying for music, maybe even hotel rooms, meals, and transport, but they also gain an incredible experience.
What’s more, the arts can bring communities together, reducing loneliness and making people feel safer. Social bonds are created among individuals when they share their arts’ experiences through reflection and discussion, and their expression of common values.
The arts clearly have a pretty positive impact on physical and psychological health. It is found that people who frequent cultural places or participate in artistic events are more likely to gain good health compared to those who do not; more engagement with the arts is linked to a higher level of people’s well-being. The Public Health discovered that music and art, when used in hospitals, help to improve the conditions of patients by reducing stress, anxiety and blood pressure.
Children who are involved with the arts make greater achievements in their education: those engaged with drama have greater literary ability while others taking part in musical practice exhibit greater skills in math and languages. Kids with preference for the arts have a greater chance of finding employment in the future. Participating in the arts is essential for child development; encouraging children to express themselves in constructive ways could help to form healthy emotional responses in later life.
Vital to human life, art is celebrated and used across the world. Life without art would be boring, for art is a part of what makes us human.

Many high school students consider a college education useless. Therefore, they choose not to go to college. If you’re one of them, think again. Here are some reasons why you should go to college and receive a good education there.
Schools and universities are the first sources of knowledge. We take that knowledge later on to build our careers after graduation. More knowledge will be gained after you start working, but without an education, that job will not be within easy reach. Knowledge leads to knowledge.
While limited within the walls of the educational institutions, we openly explore other cultures of the world. We come to know that ours is not the only culture. Other cultures have valuable insights to share, enriching our own. Education also makes us want to travel and interact with various cultures, broadening our horizons.
When there’s a downturn (衰退) in the economy, those who attended college will be more likely to find a new job than those who only finished grade school and have a limited skills set. The more education you have, the more chances you will get to improve the quality of your life as you have a better job and earn a higher salary.
When you’re skillful and knowledgeable, you get to “rub knees” with people of similar backgrounds and tastes. It means a good education leads to excellent networking. Good networking can benefit you a lot in your later life.
A good education makes you a more interesting person. You can talk about ideas and events instead of just other people and what’s on sale in stores. An educated person doesn’t gossip, having a preference to discuss ideas and listen to what other people have to say.
32. Paragraph 2 mainly shows that going to college allows you to ______.

34. By giving the example of a downturn in the economy, what does the author want to show
A. A good education can improve your tastes.
B. A good education sometimes means nothing.
C. A good education means you will not lose your job.
D. A good education allows you to keep a high quality of life.

Good networking can benefit you a lot in your later life.”;最后一段“A good education makes you a more interesting person”由此可知,上大学受教育对以后的工作有利,可探索其它国家的文化;所受的教育越多,越有可能得到更好的工作及薪水越多;好的教育会让你以后的生活受益;会让你成为一个有趣的人。由此可判断出,本文主要论述了上大学并在那里接受良好教育的等种种好处,分析选项可知B项符合题意,故选B。

“It has turned into a bigger thing than she had thought,” her mum said. “It made her feel pretty good; it made us feel pretty good.”

28. Art products differ from most other commercial products because _______.
A. their prices may climb up as time passes

A. have a chance to study abroad B. become a more interesting person
C. keep gaining knowledge D. realize the importance of knowledge
33. According to Paragraph 3, what does going to college mean
A. Having a greater understanding of different cultures.
B. Being limited within the walls of a college.
C. Valuing our own culture much more.
D. Thinking differently from others.
34. By giving the example of a downturn in the economy, what does the author want to show
A. A good education can improve your tastes.
B. A good education sometimes means nothing.
C. A good education means you will not lose your job.
D A good education allows you to keep a high quality of life.
