Two years ago, Holmes participated in Back to School Bash. He was holding down two jobs at the time — one with the city’s public works department, the other as a barber. Saturday was his busiest hair-cutting day, but he chose to donate his time and give free haircuts to kids from poor families so they’d look neat and clear on that first day of classes. But then an idea hit him — “The kids should earn their free haircut by having to read a book to me,” Holmes said.
The idea was so popular that he continued it the first Tuesday of every month for the next two years. Boys from five to ten years old would grab a favorite book, settle into the barber chair, and read aloud while Holmes was doing their hair. If they found a word obscure, Holmes was there to help. After the haircut, they’d review the book, from the characters and vocabulary to the themes — just like in school, only more fun. Holmes, who is married and has two sons, ages three and four, recognizes that not every parent has the time to read with their kids. Holmes admits he, too, benefits from the process.
Holmes and his family have recently moved to a small town in Chicago. When they get settled, he plans to take up his role as the Story-book Barber. “The way the world is today with guns and violence,” he says. “It’s a safe heaven for the kids, to come to the barbershop and read books.”

As the world faces extinction crisis and severe climate change, a growing body of scientific research has found that we should set aside more protected areas and manage them well.
Protected areas are extremely important for conservation and can help protect against habitat loss and other human activities. In many areas they may be the only places that can support the survival of some species.
Globally we’ve protected nearly 17% of our lands and 7% of the ocean, but a study published in Nature found that current protected areas on their own are too small or poorly connected to ensure the long-term survival of about half of all mammals studied — between 1,700 and 2,500 species.
If current protected areas don’t do enough, how do we do it better The researchers suggest that first we need to increase the size and number of protected areas and improve the connectivity between them. But above all, they need to be managed with a clear understanding of the animals’ habitat needs.
In a recent research, after studying 1,500 protected areas with 27,000 waterbird populations in 68 countries, researchers found that areas that were actively managed for waterbirds — such as by preventing hunting or restoring wetlands — were more successful, and often those that were larger had better results, too.
If protected areas are well taken care of, we can not only protect biodiversity(生物多样性) but also achieve other benefits. One of those benefits is to avoid runaway climate change. As we know, the earth is becoming warmer and warmer. Protecting 30% of lands could provide one-third of the reductions needed to limit global warming emissions to under 1.5 degrees Celsius.
Of course, this work won’t be easy. The next step, according to researchers, is to promote understanding and communicating the multiple benefits of increasing protected areas, and drive more support from government and local communities.
28. Why are protected areas of great importance
A. They contribute to conserving wildlife.
B. They can influence the researches of scientists.
C. They are the only places for species to survive.
D. They strengthen the animal-human relationship.
29. What’s the most important in managing protected areas
A. Increasing animal species.
B. Connecting with nearby areas.
C. Enlarging the size of protected areas.
D. Knowing the animals’ habitat needs well.
30. What can we infer from Paragraph 5
A. Protected areas helped avoid severe climate.
B. Suitable measures brought about better results.
C. Waterbirds were protected well in protected areas.
D. Restoring wetland was the best protection for waterbirds.
31. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. Measures to be taken.
C. Benefits to be gained.
B. Responsibilities of governments.
D. Support from local communities.

Swimming is one of the few exercises people can do to work all parts of their body. 32 However, swimming has many more benefits than those obvious advantages. Its improvements to overall health go much deeper. Here are four reasons for you to dive in!
Swimming can strengthen your lungs.
You might hear that lungs benefit from swimming most. 33 For this reason, swimming can increase lung volume and aid breathing technique. Plus, if you have asthma(哮喘), the pool provides an ideal exercise setting, as it’s humid and usually, a low dust environment.
Swimming may boost brain power.
Swimming has unique benefits in improving cognition (认知). In one study, participants who did a 20-minute swim responded faster on cognitive tests conducted immediately after their swim. 34
Swimming may put you in a better mood.
All exercise can be a mood booster. 35 But a study published in the Journal of Psychology found that a 40-minute swimming improved mood even more than an aerobic dance of the same time. In the meantime, swimming can reduce stress, lower anxiety, and fight depression.
36
If the previous reasons aren’t enough to convince you of the benefits of swimming, perhaps this one will: It can keep you from early dying. According to a report conducted by Swim England, swimmers had a 28 percent lower risk of early death compared with those who don't swim.
A. Swimming may enrich your life.
B. Swimming may lengthen your life.
C. The water workout trains the muscles involved with breathing.
D. All of the muscle groups work at the same time.
E. The happiness is due to the release of feel-good chemicals in the brain.
F. It will help you to keep in good shape, lose weight and look younger.
G. Another study linked swimming with improved short- and long-term memory in mice.

第三节 (满分20分)
阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
My Best Teaching Experience
Tyler was only in my senior class for a semester. He had been suspended (使停学) many times in previous years because of his anger issues. When he entered my class, I thought the worst.
Tyler sat in the back row. Every time I talked to the class, I would ask students questions, calling them by name. Unfortunately, every time I called on Tyler, he would respond with a joke. If he got an answer wrong, he would become angry.
About a month into the year, I was still trying to connect with Tyler. I can usually get students involved in class discussions or at least have them sit quietly and attentively (专心地). By contrast, Tyler was often loud and sometimes rude.
He had been in so much trouble over the years. He expected his teachers to know about his past;about how many times he had been sent to the office or suspended from school. I had found that these sorts of referrals (移交) were not very effective and that students would return from the office behaving worse than before.
One day, Tyler was talking over me while I was teaching. I stopped my lesson and said, “Tyler, why don’t you join in our discussion instead of having one of your own ” With that, he got up from his chair, pushed it over and yelled something. I can’t remember what he said other than that he included some impolite words. I sent Tyler straight to the office, and he received a week’s suspension.
To this point, this was one of my worst teaching experiences. Tyler’s anger was almost too much for me. The week Tyler was suspended from school was a wonderful time, and we got a lot accomplished as a class. However, the suspension week would soon come to an end, and I was fearful of his return.
续写要求:
1. 续写词数应为 150 左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
On the day of Tyler’s return, I stood at the door awaiting him.
