Akira Toriyama, one of Japan’s leading comics authors, whose manga (漫画) “Dragon Ball” achieved worldwide success with its mix of comedic characters and electrifying martial arts battles, died on March 1. Mr. Toriyama’s body of work, which also includes “Dr. Slump” and “Sand Land,” has influenced generations of manga artists and cartoonists.
His best-known work, “Dragon Ball,” follows a young boy named Son Goku who embarks on a journey to collect the seven magical balls that summon a wish-granting dragon. Since its creation in. the 1980s, it has sold millions of copies worldwide and become one of the most famous manga.
Throughout his career, Mr. Toriyama said in a 2013 interview with the Japanese newspaper The Asahi Shimbun, he did not care if his work did anything besides entertaining its readers. He was, he suggested, unlike “other manga artists concerned about conveying educational messages.” “The role of my manga,” he said, “is to be a work of entertainment through and through.”
When “Dragon Ball” was first published in 1984, it was an immediate hit. “Dragon Ball” was serialized in the Japanese magazine Weekly Shonen Jump until 1995. In the year after the series ended, the magazine lost about one million of its six million readers.
As a productive manga artist, Mr. Toriyama did not necessarily have an appetite for the genre as a reader. “I have always had a hard time reading manga, including my own work,” he said in a 2018 interview. He led a private life and gave few interviews. In a 2013 interview with the Japanese singer and actress Shoko Nakagawa, he said that he did not even share all his work with his family.
“To tell you the truth, no one in my family has ever seen ‘Dragon Ball,’” he said, laughing. “I am also a hikikomori,” he added, using the Japanese word for a loner.

Working out is great for your skin. It increases blood flow to all your organs — skin included — delivering oxygen and nutrients along with it. But if you exercise in a full face of makeup, you might be hurting your skin health, not helping it.
To find out what makeup does to skin during exercise, researchers applied a drug-store-brand cream foundation (粉底霜) to the foreheads and under-eye areas of 43 university students. They left the bottom halves of everyone’s faces makeup-free. All of the students then ran for 20 minutes.
“Our hypothesis was that makeup can block pores (毛孔) partially or completely, and because pores are important for evaporation and sweating, makeup would negatively impact skin health,” says Sukho Lee, a professor in the department of health, and kinesiology at Texas A&M University. Skin plays an important role in helping the body to regulate temperature, especially during exercise. Allowing pores to expand so that sweat can escape is just one of the ways that the skin releases excess heat from the body.
Using a device that can scan the skin for moisture (水分) levels, oil amounts, and pore size, the researchers compared people’s made-up and makeup-free parts of the face Moisture levels on the makeup side were higher than those on the bare side, which actually indicates a negative effect of the foundation. “Moisture on the skin is evidence of poor evaporation,” says Lee. People’s pores were also smaller on the areas where they wore makeup, which indicates that the skin wasn’t able to open up and properly regulate moisture and remove oil as it normally does, Lee says. Oil levels were lower on the makeup side, but it’s not clear why, says Lee. It’s possible that the foundation was interfering with the skin’s ability to regulate its oil levels.
The findings also raise questions about other products people apply to the face, such as sunscreen, designed to form a barrier on the skin against UV rays, Lee says.
8. Why was makeup applied to only certain parts of the students’ faces
A. To measure how makeup affects skin moisture levels.
B. To test the effect of drug-store-brand cream foundation.
C. To compare the effects of makeup on different skin types.
D. To compare skin with and without makeup during exercise.
9. What can you infer about the importance of pores during exercise
A. They are essential for delivering oxygen and nutrients to the skin.
B. They play a significant role in the skin’s temperature regulation.
C. They prevent the moisture from leaving the skin’s surface.
D. They contribute to increasing the level of oil on the skin.
10. What should be considered when applying products to the face before exercise
A. The ability of products to make you look better.
B. The effect of products in reducing skin dehydration.
C. The impact of products on the skin’s natural functions.
D. The role of products in protecting the skin from UV rays.
11. What is Lee most likely to do next in his research
A. To study makeup’s long-term effects on skin.
B. To extend the study to include other facial products.
C. To study the benefits of exercising without any makeup.
D. To investigate the effect of exercise intensity on skin health.
D
Scientists have long considered the question of whether and how plants communicate. For years, the topic sparked controversy. Books like 1973’s The Secret Life of Plants suggest that plants grow well if you sing or play classical music. Such statements were later debunked: Any evidence that music helps plants grow is not convincing at all. Still, researchers firmly believe there is some sort of communication going on between plants.
Plant communication is a complicated topic. What we do know is that plants have a wide range of mechanisms for communicating with each other and their surroundings. “It’s quite clear that plants are not just unresponsive victims, but that they are very aware of nearby things,” says Richard Karban, an entomologist at the University of California. “And they respond to reliable information.”
When a plant sends out chemicals in the air in response to a perceived threat, other sensitive leavcs on that same plant, as well as the leaves of their neighbors, perceive those signals and subsequently increase their own defenses. Karban’s research, for instance, shows that plants sound the alarm when they’re attacked by pests, so that other plants respond by growing faster and stronger. Even other species, like tobacco, can sense and react to the alarm.
In a study published in the journal Cell this March, Lilach Hadany, a professor at Tel Aviv University, put tomato and tobacco plants in an isolated box and then recorded ultrasonic (超声的) sounds. They experimented with, cutting stems or leaving them without water to simulate drought. The researchers found that the plants emitted (popping and clicking sounds at around 60 decibels in response, approximately as loud as human chatter. These sounds were at an ultrasonic frequency that humans can’t naturally hear, however. Hadany’s team even matched different sounds to the plants’ environment. And each type of stress could be matched with a specific, identifiable sound.
“We don’t know if they’re using the sound, or if the sounds are emitted in a completely passive way due to physiological changes,” Hadany says. “But we do know they are in the air, and they contain information.”
12. What does the underlined word “debunked” in Paragraph 1 mean
A. Confirmed. B. Ignored. C. Disproved. D. Promoted.
13. What does Karban’s research indicate about plant communication
A. Plants can make no response to their attackers.
B. Chemicals are sent by plants to attack the perceived threat.
C. Plants rely little on their neighbors’ information to survive.
D. The alarm sounded by one plant travels beyond plants and species.
14. What can we learn about the sounds emitted by plants from Hadany’s study
A. The sounds are loud enough to scare away pests.
B. The sounds are produced when plants are in danger.
C. The sounds can be heard by man without equipment.
D. The sounds can be matched to the human environment.
15. What is the purpose of the text
A. To inform readers. B. To compare things.
C. To warn readers. D. To advertise things.

The unexpected financial difficulties Jake’s family faced not only affected their daily lives but also Jake’s once vibrant spirit. Simple pleasures, like weekend outings, became rare luxuries as they tightened their belts. As for Jake, he longed to ease the strain on his parents, but as a teenager, he often felt like he was fighting a losing battle against forces beyond his control. As Jake’s best friend, seeing him gradually become disheartened left me with a bitter taste in my heart.
Amidst the chaos of the daily struggles, Jake referred to music as his refuge, a place where he could find a sense of peace by singing. Within the singing blending passion and tenderness, he would allow himself to dream of a brighter future, where the strains of financial hardship were nothing but a distant memory. In spite of his remarkable singing talent, Jake had always been shy about performing publicly as he struggled with feelings of self-doubt and insecurity. However, with his family’s situation growing more severe, I saw an opportunity for him to use his gift for a greater cause.
One evening, as we sat on his porch discussing his family’s hardship, I suggested organizing a mini-concert in our community to raise fund and invite the neighbors to attend. We could set up a small stage where Jake could showcase his singing talent. Though Jake finally nodded to the idea, he was uneasy deep inside, his self-doubt and insecurity surfacing. What if no one came What if no one liked his singing What if no one cared about his family situation The thought of being the center of attention was more than challenging, even threatening to him. He feared judgment and failure, worried that his efforts wouldn’t be enough to make a difference. Then came the rehearsal (排练) and Jake took part as planned.

D 9. B 10. C 11. B

They left the bottom halves of everyone’s faces makeup-free. All of the students then ran for 20 minutes.
根据第三段的“Our hypothesis was that makeup can block pores (毛孔) partially or completely, and because pores are important for evaporation and sweating, makeup would negatively impact skin health(我们的假设是,化妆品可以部分或完全堵塞毛孔,因为毛孔对蒸发和出汗很重要,化妆品会对皮肤健康产生负面影响)”和“Skin plays an important role in helping the body to regulate temperature, especially during exercise. Allowing pores to expand so that sweat can escape is just one of the ways that the skin releases excess heat from the body.(皮肤在帮助身体调节温度方面起着重要作用,尤其是在运动时,允许毛孔扩张以使汗液逸出只是皮肤从体内释放多余热量的方式之一。)”

C To warn readers. D. To advertise things.
C 13. D 14. B 15. A

猜测词义题,根据第一段的“Books like 1973’s The Secret Life of Plants suggest that plants grow well if you sing or play classical music. Such statements were later debunked: Any evidence that music helps plants grow is not convincing at all. (像1973年的《植物的秘密生活》这样的书表明,如果你唱歌或演奏古典音乐,植物会长得很好。这种说法后来被debunked:任何表明音乐有助于植物生长的证据都是毫无说服力的。)”可知,画线词前后文内容是转折的,因此debunked的意思是“反驳;证明……是错误的”。故答案为C。
【13题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段的“Karban’s research, for instance, shows that plants sound the alarm when they’re attacked by pests, so that other plants respond by growing faster and stronger. Even other species, like tobacco, can sense and react to the alarm. (例如,卡尔班的研究表明,当植物受到害虫攻击时,它们会发出警报,这样其他植物就会以生长更快、更强壮的方式做出反应。甚至其他物种,如烟草,也能感觉到警报并做出反应。)”可知,卡尔班的研究表明,一种植物发出的警报超越了植物和物种。故答案为D。
【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段的“They experimented with, cutting stems or leaving them without water to simulate drought.
根据文章最后一段““We don’t know if they’re using the sound, or if the sounds are emitted in a completely passive way due to physiological changes,” Hadany says. “But we do know they are in the air, and they contain information.”(“我们不知道他们是否在使用声音,或者声音是否是由于生理变化而以完全被动的方式发出的,”Hadany说。“但是我们知道它们在空气中,它们包含信息.”)”并通读全文可知,主要讲述了科学家们长期以来一直在考虑植物是否交流以及如何交流的问题。尽管有关植物对音乐生长反应的说法被否定,但研究确认植物间存在某种交流方式。文章的目的是告知读者。故答案为A。

【导语】本文是说明文。这篇文章主要介绍了如何更深入地了解自己的个性,包括认清自己的道德观、价值观、激情,并寻求反馈等方法。
【16题详解】
根据前文“Who doesn’t love taking interesting personality quizzes and comparing the results with their friends (谁不喜欢做有趣的性格测试,并将结果与朋友们进行比较呢?)”提到人们喜欢做有趣的性格测试并与朋友比较结果,接着说“and besides it can also be a helpful way to understand yourself better, make smarter decisions that set you up for success, and improve your relationships.(除此之外,它还可以帮助你更好地了解自己,做出更明智的决定,为你的成功奠定基础,改善你的人际关系)”,意思是除了有趣之外,这还是一种更好地了解自己的有益方式。
F选项“Everyone has a sense of what they know is right and wrong(每个人都有对是非的感知)”直接对应这一点,强调了每个人都有自己内在的道德准则或“良知”。故选F项。
根据前文“Values are the big ideas that shape your decisions. These ideas are broad goals like having financial security, being close to family, or staying healthy.(价值观是影响你做出决定的重要理念。这些想法是广泛的目标,比如经济安全、与家人亲近或保持健康)”可知,本段讨论的是认识自己的价值观,并指出这些价值观会影响决策和目标设定,所以C项“You can set goals that fit your personality(你就可以设定符合你个性的目标)”与这一点相吻合,意味着了解自己的价值观后,可以据此设定更符合自己个性和期望的目标。故选C项。
【19题详解】
分析设空,为本段小标题,是对本段的高度概括,根据后文“While your values are the motivation behind your goals, your passions can provide the focus needed to reach them. You will know you are passionate about something if it holds your interest for extended periods of time. If you build a career (or even a hobby) around these passions, you will remain happier and more fulfilled than if you neglect them.(虽然你的价值观是你目标背后的动力,但你的激情可以提供实现目标所需的注意力。

On the day of the mini-concert, Jake stepped onto the small stage.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
However, in my eyes, Jake’s hesitation still remained a problem. Despite his exceptional talent and the overwhelming support he received, he was still nervous, uncertain about whether to perform songs. I knew that for him to truly shine and reach his full potential, he needed to overcome this obstacle. So, I decided to approach him before the concert. I encouraged him to believe in himself and his abilities, reminding him that his voice and music had the power to move people. Hearing that, Jake finally made up his mind to trust himself.
On the day of the mini-concert, Jake stepped onto the small stage. His initial nervousness was still evident, but as he began to sing, his voice grew stronger and more confident. The crowd, smaller than the one at the main concert, was nonetheless fully engaged, listening intently and responding with cheers and applause. Jake’s hesitation seemed to melt away as he immersed himself in the music, his face lit up with a newfound sense of joy and accomplishment. It was clear that he had taken my advice to heart and was beginning to believe in his own abilities.
