Growing up in Kenya, Lesein Mutunkei, together with his family, always celebrated significant occasions by planting trees, which motivated him to protect the environment. It’s what the now 18-year-old soccer player treasures, especially since Kenya has an ongoing problem with deforestation.
Mutunkei follows in the footsteps of the late Kenyan Nobel Peace Prize winner Wangari Maathai who founded the Green Belt Movement in 1977. This initiative has resulted in the planting of over 51 million trees to date.
In 2018, Lesein decided to start a movement of his own. He started by planting one tree for every goal he scored during a football match. He called it Trees4Goals, and it has grown so much that he now plants 11 trees, one for each member of his team, every time he scores. Through this, he wants to inspire young people, specifically his fellow athletes, to follow in his footsteps, take nature conservation seriously, and promise to plant trees every time they score. As a result, some of them have adapted this practice for their sports. “Seeing that they’re taking that responsibility because of the project I started, for me, that is the biggest achievement,” he said.
The initiative has caught the attention of English football club Arsenal and Kenya’s Ministry of Environment and Forestry, which he now works with regularly and gets advice from.
Like Green Belt Movement, Trees4Goals, which has planted 5,500 trees so far, has made it. While Lesein has received some recognition for his initiative, he sets his sights on making it a worldwide phenomenon. “Football is a universal game, and climate change is a universal problem,” he explains. “It has the power to unite, educate and inspire my generation to create a safer and greener future.” This is why he wants to work with the world’s biggest football federation FIFA.
As for what others can do to fight deforestation or other environmental concerns, the teenager says it’s important to just get involved in some way, no matter how small.
4 What made Lesein get interested in environmental protection
A. The influence of his family.
B. Wangari Maathai’s huge assistances.
C. The demand of the football team.
D. His fellow athletes’ encouragement.
5. Why did Lesein found Trees4Goals
A. To gain Kenya’s support.
B. To set an example for others.
C. To catch Arsenal’s attention.
D. To show his achievements.
6. What is Lesein’s hope for the future of Trees4Goals
A. Promoting football’s development.
B. Going global with the help of FIFA.
C. Beating climate change completely.
D. Getting beyond Green Belt Movement.
7 What can we learn from Lesein’s story
A. Fame is a great thirst of the young.
B. A youth is to be regarded with respect.
C. Positive thinking and action result in success.
D. Success means getting personal desires satisfied.
【答案】4. A 5. B 6. B 7. C

Proper questioning has become a lost art. The curious four-year-old asks a lot of questions-incessant streams of “Why ” and “Why not “ might sound familiar-but as we grow older, our questioning decreases. In a recent survey of more than 200 of our clients, we found that those with children estimated that 70-80% of their kids’ dialogues with others were comprised of questions. But those same clients said that only 15-25% of their own interactions consisted of questions. Why the drop of
Think back to your time growing up and in school. Chances are you received the most recognition or reward when you got the correct answers. Later in life, that motivator continues. At work, we often reward those who answer questions, not those who ask them. Questioning conventional wisdom can even lead to being distanced, or considered a threat.
Because expectations for decision-making have gone from ”get it done soon“ to ”get it done now“ to ”it should have been done yesterday, “ we tend to jump to conclusions instead of asking more questions. And the unfortunate side effect of not asking enough questions is poor decision-making. That’s why it’s vital that we slow down and take the time to ask more and better questions. At best, we’ll arrive at better conclusions. At worst we’ll avoid a lot of rework later on.
Aside from not speaking up enough, many professionals don’t think about how different types of questions can lead to different outcomes. We should lead a conversation by asking the right kinds of questions, based on the problem we’re trying to solve. In some cases, we’ll want to expand our view of the problem rather than keeping it narrowly focused. In others, we may want to challenge basic assumptions or confirm our understanding in order to feel more confident in our conclusions. Therefore, asking the right kinds of questions is what counts in achieving a goal.
8. What does the underlined word ”incessant“ in paragraph 1 most probably mean
A. Constant. B. Random. C. Noisy. D. Innocent.
9. What accounts for the decline of questioning in adulthood
A. One poses a threat to the company if they ask questions.
B. Those who ask questions don’t necessarily get positive feedback.
C. One doesn’t have as many opportunities as they did in childhood.
D. Those who question popular beliefs don’t have interpersonal skills.
10. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. Redoing is unavoidable despite thoughtful questions.
B. Better questions can surely result in desirable outcomes.
C. Some people think it can’t be too fast to make a decision.
D. We’ll make reasonable decisions as long as we ask questions.
11 What might the author continue talking about
A. Proper questions that should be raised.
B. Important goals that we are to achieve.
C. Right kinds of answers to the questions.
D. The reasons for the loss of questioning art.
【答案】8. A 9. B 10. C 11. A
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。短文介绍了恰当的提问已经成为一门失传的艺术,分析了原因以及鼓励人们恰当的提问。
【8题详解】

【9题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Think back to your time growing up and in school. Chances are you received the most recognition or reward when you got the correct answers. Later in life, that motivator continues. 【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Because expectations for decision-making have gone from ”get it done soon“ to ”get it done now“ to ”it should have been done yesterday, “ we tend to jump to conclusions instead of asking more questions. And the unfortunate side effect of not asking enough questions is poor decision-making.”( 因为对决策的期望已经从“尽快完成”变成了“现在完成”,再变成了“昨天就应该完成”,我们倾向于直接下结论,而不是问更多的问题。没有问足够多的问题的副作用是糟糕的决策。)可知,有些人认为做决定不能太快。故选C项。

D
There’s a classic short story in which a young man travels years ahead and meets his future self. Narratives like this have always been related to science fiction. But what if you could meet your future self
I’m a psychologist and professor. My research over the past 15 years isn’t far from this theme. I’ve largely focused on how people think about and relate to their future selves, and explored the reasons why we have such a hard time making long-term decisions. In my research, I’ve learnt that we often imagine our future selves like strangers, which can impede us in making long-term choices. One way to bridge the emotional gap is to think of future selves in more concrete and vivid ways, like writing letters to and from one’s future self, which can strengthen the connection between current and future selves.
Admittedly, having people engage in an imagined conversation is a far cry from actually meeting one’s future self. But it’s believed that far richer interactions may happen in the near future through artificial intelligence (AI). It wouldn’t be predicting exactly what choices you’d make. It’d be more about showing your potential, based on the lives of people similar to you: not just one possible life for you, but rather, the most possible life path for you. Such interactions could offer valuable insights into our potential future selves.
So, to return to my original question: if you could time-travel to meet your future self, what aspects of your life would you want to know more about I realized, through thorough reflections, that the most powerful questions would be ones that helped me make better choices today —questions exploring personal growth, regrets and unfulfilled actions.
Actually, you don’t need to wait for time travel or advanced AI for answers that you can act on. Through my research, I’ve learnt that simply taking a bit of time to picture this meeting can help you make better choices now. All you need is a little imagination, and the willingness to put yourself in the shoes of a person you currently treat as a stranger.
12. Why is it difficult for people to make long-term decisions according to the author
A. Technology for time travel is not available.
B. Strangers cannot help with decision-making.
C. Writing letters to one’s future self is impractical.
D. People find it hard to connect with their distant selves.
13. What does the underlined phrase “a far cry from” mean in paragraph 3
A. contradictory to B. very different from
C. not as convenient as D. less popular than
14. Which question would the author most likely ask his future self
A. Why hasn’t my hard work ever paid off
B. What can AI do to help people become better persons
C. If given the chance, what would you have done differently
D. How can I succeed without going through all the difficulties in life
15. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Time travel: What if you met your future self
B. My research: How do people view their future selves
C. Emotional gap: Why can’t we talk with our future selves
D. Artificial intelligence: Is it possible to meet your future self
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. C 15. A

根据第二段“I’ve largely focused on how people think about and relate to their future selves, and explored the reasons why we have such a hard time making long-term decisions. In my research, I’ve learnt that we often imagine our future selves like strangers, which can impede us in making long-term choices.(我主要关注的是人们如何思考和联系他们未来的自己,并探讨了我们很难做出长期决定的原因。在我的研究中,我了解到我们经常把未来的自己想象成陌生人,这可能会阻碍我们做出长期的选择)”可知,人们很难做出长期的决定因为人们发现很难与遥远的自己联系起来。故选D。

【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“I realized, through thorough reflections, that the most powerful questions would be ones that helped me make better choices today —questions exploring personal growth, regrets and unfulfilled actions.(经过深思熟虑,我意识到,最有影响力的问题应该是那些帮助我今天做出更好选择的问题——那些探讨个人成长、遗憾和未实现的行为的问题)”可知,作者最有可能问未来的自己:如果有机会,你会做些什么不同的事?故选C。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段“There’s a classic short story in which a young man travels years ahead and meets his future self. Narratives like this have always been related to science fiction. But what if you could meet your future self 故选A。

That allowed us the next day to travel on foot to the ones we especially wanted to see.
Let’s look at the San Francisco Bay Area which is another one of my favorite vacation spots. Some areas are so familiar to tourists that it’s possible to view the attractions on your own. ____17____ Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39 are good examples. Just by walking a few blocks, you can tour Aquarium of the Bay and the Riptide Arcade on Pier 39.
____18____ If you go to Alcatraz Island, you have a choice of going alone, having a live tour guide or being guided by earphones. I would recommend the live tour guides. I went all three ways, and I received more enjoyment by someone telling me items interest I know I had missed on previous tours. ____19____ It gives you a behind-the-scenes look of colorful Chinatown. The tour covers history, traditions of the local people and culture that you probably wouldn’t know or see by travelling alone.

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen! It’s my great honor to give the speech entitled “The Power of Reading” on this World Reading Day.
There was a time when my study suffered greatly because of my inability to adapt to the new school life quickly. Feeling at a loss, one day I caught sight of the book “The Old Man and the Sea” in the library accidentally. On reading it, I was captivated by the old fisherman’s brave struggle with the fish and his strong willpower. The sentence “A man can be destroyed but not defeated” inspired me never to yield to difficulties. Since then, I have enjoyed immersing myself in reading, for it opens up a magical world from which I draw endless strength.
Let’s grab a book and start reading, igniting the fire of reading and embracing the wisdom it brings! Thank you!

47. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
It was a cold, snowy evening. Tommy was running as fast as he could, focused on nothing but his destination----the shop on the street corner. Two weeks ago he saw figurines(小塑像) of Marvel superheroes on the shelves and felt he had to have one. He’s been walking the neighbor’s dog ever since then to earn money to fulfil his little dream. He was so excited and barely noticing the world around him. Maybe that’s why he tripped over the legs of a homeless woman, who was sitting on the pavement, her back against the wall. He murmured(低语) "sorry" and moved on to his destination.
Once he entered the shop, he went straight to the shelves with figurines. Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and many more----all of his admired heroes. With his heart pounding like crazy he reached for Spiderman.
“You like these, true believer ”
Tommy turned around. An old man was standing behind him with a wide smile on his face.
“Y-yes, …Yes, they’re awesome!” answered Tommy. “They’re strong and fast and help other people a lot ...”the boy looked at figurines in admiration. “I wish I could be a superhero too.”
“Then become one!” said the old man.
“How ” Tommy asked in surprise. “I don’t have any superpowers.”
“And why would you need them ” the old man smiled. Seeing the confusion on the boy's face, he squatted(蹲下) and put his hands on Tommy's arms. “Did you know that shopkeeper lady over there has a disabled husband She’s been working hard and taking care of him for years. I’ve never heard a word of complaint from her. And this person ---” he pointed at a redhead man, who just entered the shop. “He’s a firefighter; he’s saved countless lives. He never gives up, no matter how dangerous the situation seems to be.”
The old man looked Tommy in the eyes and smiled. “You don’t need a superpower to be a hero for someone else. The path of a superhero starts not in the mind, not in the muscles, but in the heart.”

Tommy lowered his head and looked at his shoes thinking intensely. Finally he raised his head. "So I am supposed to...” he stopped mid-sentence when he realized that he was alone. He turned his head left and right, but the old man was nowhere to be seen. His eyes lit up---- he already had an idea of what he should do. He looked at figurines for the last time and moved towards the counter. "Two sandwiches and a cup of tea please, "he said, and then returned, food in hand.
The homeless woman was right there, where he saw her last time. Tommy came closer and carefully gave the woman his buys. Her eyes opened wide in surprise, then filled with tears. “Thank you," she whispered. Tommy bowed his head, turned around and went back home. He was moving faster and faster and finally he started to run. Strange energy filling his body made him feel like he could fly. When he finally stopped, he was breathing heavily, but he didn’t feel tired. He smiled happily --- it was a wonderful feeling. And nothing could stop it.

4. What made Lesein get interested in environmental protection
A. The influence of his family.
B. Wangari Maathai’s huge assistances.
C. The demand of the football team.
D. His fellow athletes’ encouragement.
5. Why did Lesein found Trees4Goals
A To gain Kenya’s support.
B. To set an example for others.
C. To catch Arsenal’s attention.
D. To show his achievements.
6. What is Lesein’s hope for the future of Trees4Goals
A. Promoting football’s development.
B. Going global with the help of FIFA.
C Beating climate change completely.
D. Getting beyond Green Belt Movement.
7. What can we learn from Lesein’s story
A. Fame is a great thirst of the young.
B. A youth is to be regarded with respect.
C. Positive thinking and action result in success.
D. Success means getting personal desires satisfied.

11. What might the author continue talking about
A. Proper questions that should be raised.
B. Important goals that we are to achieve.
C. Right kinds of answers to the questions.
D. The reasons for the loss of questioning art.

Once he entered the shop he went straight to the shelves with figurines.
