Ruben and Nico, her two cousins, liked spending all the money on sweets. They showed off their sweets in front of the other children and made fun of their cousins. Later, Clara and Joe, Julia's two other cousins, joined them in buying sweets. Julia liked the violin even though her family couldn't afford to pay for violin lessons. Julia happened to know a poor violinist who played in the park. She offered him all the money her grandpa had given her and asked him to teach her how to play the violin. The violinist happily agreed and taught her for months. Julia worked hard. The violinist lent her a violin so that they could play together in the park. Every month, they gave a small concert in the park with other musicians. Gradually Julia's skills improved and she even made enough money to buy her own violin. It was a lovely spring afternoon. My classmates and I were playing happily in the playground when l cried, “Ow! Ow! Something in my shoe is biting(咬) me.” Everyone was shocked. They took me into a classroom and were about to take off my shoe. “Which foot is it, Anna " One asked. “Let's have a look.”
Suddenly, remenbered the holes in my socks. My family was very poor during those years, so I wore cheap socks that didn't last long. They soon had holes at the bottom. I refused to take off my shoe because I couldn't stand others seeing the holes in my sock. I tried to hold back my tears.
But each time the things in my shoe bit me, tears raced down my face. My teacher, Miss Celina, hurried into the classroom. “What's wrong ” she asked. “Something is biting her right foot, but she doesn't let us take off her shoe,” one of my classmates answered. Miss Celina lived next door to me. She knew everything about my family. She put both hands on my shaking shoulders and looked into my hopeless eyes." Oh, yes, it must be a sock-eating ant," she said, as if she had already seen the ants inside the shoe.
I had been bitten by one of those ants. By the time I got my shoe off, it had eaten almost the whole bottom of my sock. My classmates nodded while they were listening to the teacher carefully, although they all looked a little doubtful. Miss Celina took off my right shoe and sock and shook them over the dustbin. Two red ants fell into it. “That's just what I thought. The ants have eaten part of her sock.” When she stroked(轻抚) an alcohol(酒精) cotton ball on the bites, she added, “You are such a brave girl to take so many bites.” The alcohol felt cool on the bites and the "sock-eating ant" story brought me the help that I would never forget.

Chinese Zhusuan is one of the scientific achievements in ancient China.
The abacus is easy to use as a tool for calculation. This invention shows the wisdom of the ancient Chinese people.
About 2,000 years ago in the Eastern Han Dynasty, Liu Hong mentioned the idea of “zhusuan”. However, the idea dated back to a time earlier than this. According to research, the early Zhusuan was developed friom rod-arithmetic. The method of rod-arithmetic is nearly the same as that of zhusuan. However, the improvement of rod-arithmetic was a tough job. It necds large space, and the way of placing rods(棒) is neither simple to explain nor easy to understand.
In the Han Dynasty, thanks to the silk road, the business in ancient China developed rapidly. As a result, a lot of methods of calculation also developed. At that point, Zhusuan, which was more convenient than rod-arithmetic, started to be used. The early abacus was different from what we use today. In the Tang Dynasty, the abacus, which was similar to the recent abacus, appeared. In the Ming Dynasty and Qing Dynasty, the abacus achieved its full development. The use of it was introduced to all walks of life.
In the Ming Dynasty, Cheng Dawei produced a math book— General Source of Computational Methods(《算法统宗》). It further sped up the development of the abacus. The book was spread to Japan and Southeast Asia, and it played an important role in influencing the local development of math.
Nowadays, Chinese Zhusuan has become our intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) and we believe the stoty about this amazing calcularion tool will coninue.
