clean up意为“清扫;把……打扫干净”,是由“动词+副词”构成的动词短语。宾语若为代词,应置于动词和副词之间;宾语若为名词,可置于动词和副词之间,也可置于副词之后。例如:
This desk is too dirty. Please clean it up.
这张课桌太脏了。请把它打扫干净。
After meals, please clean up the table. =After meals, please clean the table up. 饭后请把桌子收拾干净。

2.Clean-Up Day is only two weeks from now. We can’t put off making a plan. 清洁日离现在只有两个星期了。我们不能推迟制订计划的时间了。
put off意为“推迟”,属于“动词+副词”型短语;后若接动词,动词必须用-ing形式,意为“推迟做某事”。例如:
Don’t put off until tomorrow what can be done today. 今天可以做的事情不要推到明天。
3.They told me stories about the past and how things used to be. 他们给我讲了过去的故事和曾经是什么样子的。
used to意为“曾经……;过去……”,表示现在已经不是那样了,后接动词原形。其否定形式为didn’t use to或usedn’t to;其疑问形式既可用助动词did提问,也可用used直接提问。例如:
My mother used to tell me stories when I was young. 我小的时候,我妈妈常给我讲故事。
否定句:
My mother didn’t use to tell me stories when I was young.
= My mother usedn’t to tell me stories when I was young.

5.I get such a strong feeling of satisfaction when I see the animals get better and the look of joy on their owners’ faces. 当我看到动物们身体好转和它们主人脸上高兴的样子,我就得到一种强烈的满足感。
(1)satisfaction作名词,意为“满足;满意”。例如:
Simon gets great satisfaction from helping others,so he’s always ready to give others a helping hand.

【拓展】satisfied是形容词,意为“满意的;满足的”。satisfy是动词,意为“使满足,使满意”。
(2)句中两个get的用法和意义不同。第一个get意为“产生;形成”,为及物动词,常与feeling,idea等词搭配使用;第二个get为系动词,后常接形容词,表示体质、情绪、天气等方面状况上的改变,意为“变得;变为”。
(3) 在“such+a/an +形容词+单数可数名词”和“so +形容词+a/an+单数可数名词”结构中,such除了修饰单数可数名词,还可以修饰复数名词和不可数名词。so是副词,修饰形容词或副词。如果复数名词前有few,many等形容词,不可数名词前有little,much等形容词,就必须用so,而不能用such。例如:
It is such an interesting book that I want to read it again. =It is so interesting a book that I want to read it again. 这是一本如此有趣的书,以至于我想再读一遍。
There is so little water that it is not enough for so many people. 水太少了,不够这么多人喝。
6.We will raise the money from the sale to homeless people.
我们将会把销售所得的钱捐给无家可归的人。
(1)raise 是动词,意为“筹集;征集”;
raise money for意为“为……筹钱”。例如:
They decided to raise the money by having a concert.
他们决定举办一场音乐会来筹集资金。
(2)homeless是形容词,意为“无家可归的”。-less是一个用来表示否定的形容词后缀。类似的词还有:careless(粗心的),hopeless(没有希望的), friendless(没有朋友的), helpless(无助的), useless(没用的)。

8.动词不定式的用法。
(1)概述。
①动词不定式的基本形式为“to+动词原形”,有些特殊情况可以省略to。否定形式是由“not+动词不定式”构成。例如:
My mother told me not to swim in the river by myself. 我母亲告诉我不要一个人到河里游泳。
②动词不定式没有人称和数的变化,在句中不能作谓语。
③动词不定式具有名词、形容词和副词的特征,因此在句中可作主语、宾语、宾语补足语、定语和状语等。初中阶段要求同学们掌握动词不定式作宾语、状语和宾语补足语的用法。
(2)用法。
①动词不定式作宾语。能用动词不定式作宾语的动词有很多,常见的有begin,need,want,try,decide,hope,promise等。例如:
I hope to visit the Great Wall some day. 我希望有一天能去游览长城。
②动词不定式作状语。常用来修饰动词或形容词,表示行为、目的、结果或原因。例如:
After a long training, he stopped to take a breath. 经过长时间的训练,他停下来喘口气。
③动词不定式作宾语补足语。常用来补充说明宾语的动作、状态。有些动词需要动词不定式作宾语补足语,常见的有ask, tell, help, invite等。例如:
My grandmother asked me to spend my vacation with her. 我祖母要我和她一起度假。
④不带to的情况。表示感觉的动词(如watch,see,hear,notice,feel等)和使役动词(let,have,make等)后常用省略to的不定式作宾语补足语。例如:
I saw her play the guitar just now. 我刚才看见她弹吉他。
⑤动词不定式可与what,when,which,how,where等疑问词连用。例如:
I don’t know where to go this weekend. 我不知道这个周末去哪里。

“Make-A-Wish” is one of the world’s most well-known charities(慈善机构). It makes wishes come true for children who have serious illnesses. It gives them hope and joy and helps them forget about their health problems and have fun.
It all started in 1980 in Phoenix, Arizona. Christopher was a 7-year-old boy who was very sick. He always dreamed of becoming a police officer.
