Hem an Bekele is not your typical high school student. Rather than spending his free time playing video games or staring at his phone, this. 14 year-old from Fairfax, Virginia was calling professors and conducting experiments, all to create a soap that could treat skin cancer, and to make it affordable for everyone who needs it. His work won him the grand prize in this year's 3M Young Scientist's Challenge, a competition that encourages kids to think of unique ways to solve everyday problems.
Growing up in Ethiopia, Bekele found in pity that people working outside were likely to end up getting skin cancer. Skin cancer did have cures and was treatable in most cases. However, the average price of skin cancer treatment globally was almost $40,000. Those shocking statistics really inspired him to create a more accessible solution. He started doing experiments and working on different things, and that turned into his bar of soap as a project.
A lot of his research and development started in his family's kitchen and in his basement. But as he reached the final of the competition, he realized that he did need to do a little bit more outside of just his house. So he reached out to people at University of Virginia and people at Georgetown, and he got a lot of assistance. The number one person would be Deborah Isabelle, who helped him organize and structure his ideas during the finalist competition. Bekele said that he definitely couldn't have done that all by himself.
Bekele's award-winning soap is a compound based bar of soap and it's charged with different cancer fighting chemicals. The color of the soap is a bit of a dark type of white and it has a rough surface, which could be a good exfoliant(去角质剂). It does have a strong medicine smell and feel a bit stickier. The whole point of it is that even once you wash off the soaps, the medicinal parts will stay on your skin. It can activate the body's immune cells to defend cancer.
Bekele won 25,000 prize money and he was going to use it to continue research. He said, "I still need a lot of resources to be able to conduct this research, so this money will definitely help me achieve it."
24. Why did Heman Bekele start working on creating the soap
A. Because he thought it was a fun project.
B. Because he wanted to win a science competition.
C. Because he found skin cancer treatment unaffordable.
D. Because he wanted to create a unique soap for everyone.

D. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.
26. What is paragraph 4 of the text mainly about
A. What features the soap has. B. How the soap is used.

The term "graffiti" is an Italian word meaning scratching or scribbling(乱涂). It entered the English language in the 1850s, specifically to describe the casual wall writing that experts found in Pompeii and the Roman tombs. Originally a term used only in ancient scribbling, the word has undergone considerable expansion of meaning in the past 75 years so that it now refers to any written message on a wall. Graffiti are characterized by their casualness;if they were more formal, they would be known as inscriptions(铭文).
The first piece of graffiti was found on one of the walls of the city Pompeii, which was destroyed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. It was one of 1,600 pieces of graffiti uncovered in Pompeii during a dig in the 19th century. Not surprisingly, there is much evidence of graffiti writing on the pyramid and temples of ancient Egypt. It is likely that ever since people have had walls and materials to scratch or paint with, they have been engaged in this simplest form of communication.
The writing of graffiti gives people a unique opportunity to achieve some kind of public audience. Thus short poems, declarations of love, pieces of political and revolutionary polemic(论战), and criticisms of institutions and people form a significant part of graffiti.
Apart from its usefulness in terms of self-expression, graffiti is also a valuable source for historians. There is always the possibility that historical events may be recorded by the presence of graffiti. Perhaps the most interesting example of this is the graffiti relating to the gladiatorial(角斗士)contests held in Pompeii. Graffiti can also give us a unique view into the daily life and customs of a people, for its casual expression encourages the recording of details that more formal writing would tend to ignore.
In the late 1970s, graffiti became popular. A thought written on a toilet wall in Wolverhampton can now be read in Chicago or Adelaide. In its own way, this is probably the most fascinating example of McLuhan's concept of "the global village". We now have a worldwide toilet wall.

Improved mental health is on the schedule for many people in 2024 and being organized is the preferred method of realizing it.
Disorganization is often considered to have a negative impact on the way we see ourselves and the lives we lead. The studied downsides of living in a disorganized environment include memory problems, poor eating habits, and decreased self-control. "There's an obvious link between increased stress and anxiety disorders and living in a messy space," says Daniel Levitin, a behavioral neuroscientist(行为神经科学家)at McGill University.
"Disorganization brings a loss of productivity that is difficult to quantify," says Levitin. He points to the amount of time people lose looking for lost items, missing appointments, or falling behind at work or school because of disordered living. "The average person likely loses 5 percent of their time due to disorganization," he says. "Take your annual salary, multiply that by 5 percent, and you can measure what disorganization may be costing you."
Joseph Ferrari, one of the most recognized scholars on disorganization research, says that nearly every mental health downside that comes from disorganization can be improved by getting organized. "You'll feel more energetic, enhance your productivity in the office, and greatly improve the quality of your life," he says.
Tidy homes have been found to be a predictor of physical health. "Those whose houses are cleaner are more active and physically healthy," says Libby Sander, an assistant professor of organizational behavior. Part of this is due to organized people being better at managing their time, but it's also because research demonstrates that less clutter(杂乱)can help improve one's diet. "Studies show an association between clutter and overweight, "says Libby.
Getting organized has also been shown to decrease one's stress levels, increase personal efficiency, and even improve sleep. Another studied advantage of getting organized may be improving the quality of one's relationships. Libby explains that relationships can be negatively impacted when too much clutter affects communication or distracts one's brain from noticing important message from their partner. Research shows this can cause others to feel ignored, misunderstood, or unimportant.
32. What does Levitin say concerning living a disorganized life
A. It has been well realized by people.
B. It's many people's New Year resolution.
C. It has an obvious impact on mental state.
D. It's closely related to the living environment.
33. How does Levitin support his opinion
A. By giving examples. B. By making comparisons.
C. By quoting other experts' words. D. By referring to previous studies.
34. What might help people avoid overweight according to paragraph 5
A. High productivity. B. Good management of time.
C. Ignorance about others' feeling. D. An organized home.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. The Neuroscience Behind Healthy Minds
B. The Cost of Clutter— How Disorganization Affects Your Life
C. Mental Health in-2024— Self-control as a Priority
D. Organize for Success—Boosting Health and Productivity

I needed to do something in my community(社区)in order to complete the community service hours required to graduate from high school. Some of my friends had signed up to spend time at a soup kitchen, so I did, too. It seemed like a good thing to do.
I thought that we would just be passing out dinners to those in need, but I found out we would be doing everything from preparing to serving the dinner. We began preparing the food, from mixing salad dressing to separating frozen meat. Much still needed to be done before dinner was served, but already outside the building many homeless people were gathering. It wasn't until a couple of hours later that we opened the doors and began serving dinner.
As the line of people came toward me, I got a little scared. I'd come face to face with the homeless:How should I act How would they treat me Would they hate me for having more than they did While some of the people looked very friendly, some of them looked so dangerous. I didn't have too much time to worry about it. I was assigned(分配)to serve the salad with the lady next to me. She smiled at me and said if I needed help, she'd be right there, which I found quite comforting.
I had never seen so many people wanting food. They were of all ages and nationalities. Most of them wore clothes that were torn and dirty. Some looked like they had totally given up on life, while others seemed to be making the best of the situation, smiling and joking. Some were better off than others, but they all needed a good meal and a warm place to eat. It saddened me to think of how many people there were who didn't have a place to call home and the only food they got came from a soup kitchen.
