“What were you doing…?”是过去进行时的特殊疑问句。过去进行时用法小结。
(1)定义:表示在过去某一时刻或某一段时间正在进行的动作。
(2)构成:was/were+v.-ing
(3)句型结构。
肯定句:主语+was/were+v.-ing+其他.
否定句:主语+was/were+not+v.-ing+其他.
一般疑问句:Was/Were+主语+v.-ing+其他?
肯定回答:Yes,主语+was/were.
否定回答:No,主语+wasn’t/weren’t.
特殊疑问句:特殊疑问词+was/were +主语 + v.-ing+其他?
(4)用法。
① 表示某一时刻正进行的行为, 与特定的过去时间状语连用。常见的时间状语有at eight last night,at this time,at that time, at that moment,“when+一般过去时的时间状语从句”等。例如:

—I was playing volleyball with my friends. 我正在和我的朋友打排球。
②表示过去某段时间正进行的动作。例如:

(5)过去进行时和一般过去时的区别。
①过去进行时表示过去正在进行的动作, 而一般过去时则表示一个完整的动作。例如:
Mike was writing an e-mail to his friend yesterday evening. 昨天晚上迈克在写电子邮件给他的朋友。(没有说明电子邮件是否写完)

②当动作延续较长时间时或表示厌烦、赞美等感彩时, 常用过去进行时表示。例如:
She was thinking more of others than of herself. 她考虑别人的比考虑自己的多。(表示说话者赞扬的口气)

2.My alarm didn’t go off so I woke up late. 我的闹钟没响,因此我醒来晚了。
go off意为“发出声音”,句中didn’t go off是“(闹钟)没有响”的意思。例如:
My alarm clock goes off at 7:00 every morning. 我的闹钟每天早上7点响。
There was something wrong with my alarm clock and it didn’t go off. 我的闹钟出了毛病,没有响。
【拓展】
①go off意为“(灯)熄灭;停止运转;离开”。例如:
There was a power cut and all of the lights went off. 停电了,所有的灯熄灭了。
②go off还可以表示“变质,变坏”。例如:
Meat goes off quickly in hot weather. 热天肉变质得快。
3.I called at seven and you didn’t pick up. 我七点给你打电话,你没有接。
pick up指“拿起电话”,还可以指“接电话”,相当于answer the phone。例如:

【拓展】
①pick up还指“拾起来,捡起”,是“动词+副词”型的动词短语。当名词作宾语时,放在副词前后都可以;当代词作宾语时,只能放在动词和副词之间。例如:
My pencil is under your chair. Can you pick it up for me 我的铅笔在你的椅子下面。你能帮我捡起来吗
②pick up还可意为“(开车)接(某人)”。例如:
My mother will pick me up after school today. 我妈妈今天放学后会来接我。

【辨析】when与while的用法区别。
(1)when与while意为“当……时”,引导时间状语从句,表示一段时间时,两者可以互换,此时从句的动词为延续性动词。例如:
While/ When I was walking in the street, I met a friend of mine. 当我走在街上时,我遇到了我的一个朋友。
(2)表示一个时间点时,此时从句的动词为短暂性动词,在这种情况下只用when而不用while。例如:
When I got home yesterday, my father was looking through the newspaper. 昨天当我到家时, 我父亲正在翻阅报纸。
(3)while表示“在……的时候”“在……期间”。它强调主句的动作发生在从句的动作过程中。当表示主句、从句谓语动作同时发生时,while表示“一边……一边……”。while从句中必须是表示动作或状态的延续性动词。例如:
While I was cleaning the room, I was listening to music. 我一边打扫房间,一边听音乐。
While I was singing, my sister was dancing. 当我唱歌的时候,我妹妹在跳舞。
【注意】
①when可指时间点, 又可指时间段, 从句中可用延续性动词, 也可用非延续性动词。
②while总是指一个时间段, 从句中必须用延续性动词。

(1)with no light outside 是介词with 的复合结构,即“with+宾语+宾语补足语”。这一结构常用于表示伴随状况, 同时还包含着某种因果关系,表示“因某种状况的存在而导致……”,因此可译作with“由于;因为”等。例如:

(2)feel like后可接名词、代词、动名词,其常见用法如下。
①“feel like+名词”意为“觉得好像……”。例如:
It feels like rain soon. 好像马上就要下雨了。
②“feel like+物质名词”意为“摸上去像是……”。例如:
He is holding something that feels like a potato. 他拿的东西摸上去像个土豆。
③“feel like+doing”意为“想做……”。例如:
