A
For some, rice is simply bought at the market, ready to take home and steam or boil. But have you ever wondered about the journey the grains of rice take before they reach your plate or bowl, or fork or chopsticks
Sowing the seeds
First, the seeds are sown. Sometimes, they are planted directly in the fields, but often they are sown in nurseries where they spend their first 30 days putting forth shoots and grow into seedlings (苗).
Transplanting to the fields
After about 30 days, the seedlings are transplanted to the fields. Transplanting is exhausting, tiring work that requires standing in water and repeatedly bending over.
Harvesting
When the mature plants are a golden yellow colour, the new grains are ready to harvest. Sometimes farmers use a mechanical reaper, but often they use only a sharp knife or sickle (镰刀).
Threshing (脱粒)
Threshing separates the grains from the stalks (秆). This can be done with mechanical threshers or combines, but often the stalks are simply pounded against a hard surface. When threshing is done without machinery, the rice is tied into bundles (捆) and dried in the sun first.
Drying the rice
Drying is very important because if the moisture (水分) content is too high, the freshly harvested grains will spoil easily. In many countries, the grains are laid out to dry wherever space is available, from basketball courts to sections of major highways. Wealthy farmers may put large quantities of grains into heated airdryers.
After that, some of these grains, after certain kinds of processing and transporting, will end up in your bowl; others will be saved for the seeds next year.
1. What will happen before the grains are harvested
A. Grains will be separated from stalks.
B. Seeds are usually planted in nurseries.
C. Seedlings are transplanted to fields by machines.
D. A month after seeds are sown, seedlings will be transplanted.
2. What will rich farmers probably use to dry the grains
A. Knives or sickles. B. Mechanical threshers. C. Basketball courts. D. Heated airdryers.
3. Why is the above passage written
A. To tell us the way to process rice.
B. To show the importance of rice to human beings.
C. To introduce a new way of increasing production of rice.
D. To explain what happens before rice becomes our food.

“Our first duty is to the place that raised us,” Omar Freilla says. “For me, it’s the South Bronx, the birthplace of hip-hop.”
Although the South Bronx was one of the nation’s poorest and most polluted areas, with crowded roads and poisonous industrial sites, Omar saw a different kind of potential amidst its challenges. He envisioned a new approach to the mountains of discarded materials.
“A lot of what people throw away is perfectly good,” he says. Omar was just out of college and he started thinking about how he could get this “good garbage” to people who could use it. Instead of destroying things like old windows and doors, why not clean them up and resell them Why not hire people who live in the community to do the work Better yet, why not make this business a “cooperative”, which means that the people who work in the business own it and share the profits
To start his business, Omar put up flyers along the truck-jammed, trash-filled streets of his neighborhood, looking for people to work with him. He soon found four other dedicated workers. They rented a warehouse (仓库) and started looking for donations of used materials.
They called up hardware stores (五金店), building supply distributors, and contractors, providing free shipping from construction sites. Their warehouse began to fill up. A hardware store gave 2,000 gallons of paint that was still good but was being thrown away because it was past its expiration date (产品有效期). A distributor donated 80 new toilets from a project that had been canceled. Contractors added unwanted doors, sinks, ceiling fans—even theater seats and a giant popcorn machine!
In April 2008, Omar’s cooperative opened its doors for business and began selling construction supplies—at reasonable prices—to neighborhood builders and homeowners. With the help of city officials, he also began planning a new training program to help local residents learn the skills they need to get good jobs that help the environment and even start cooperatives of their own.
4. What was the primary motivation behind Omar’s decision to start his business in the South Bronx
A. To make a profit from selling construction supplies.
B. To address the environmental challenges in the community.
C. To compete with existing hardware stores and distributors.
D. To provide job opportunities for skilled workers in the area.
5. How did Omar start his business in the South Bronx
A. He relied on his personal savings to fund the business.
B. He distributed flyers to ask for donations from neighbors.
C. He sought funding from large companies to establish the business.
D. He actively engaged with his local community to gather support and resources.
6. How could hardware stores probably help with Omar’s business
A. They provide free shipping. B. They provide useful resources.
C. They provide financial support. D. They provide a cheap workforce.
7. Which of the following would be the most suitable title for the passage
A. The Rise of Environmental Movement in the South Bronx
B. Community Cooperation: Transforming Waste into Resources
C. Omar Freilla: A New Star in the Hip-Hop Industry
D. Navigating Challenges: The Story of South Bronx Business
【答案】4 B 5. D 6. B 7. B

【4题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段““A lot of what people throw away is perfectly good,” he says.
根据第四段“To start his business, Omar put up flyers along the truck-jammed, trash-filled streets of his neighborhood, looking for people to work with him. He soon found four other dedicated workers. They rented a warehouse (仓库) and started looking for donations of used materials.(为了开始他的生意,奥马尔在他所在社区卡车堵塞、垃圾遍地的街道上张贴传单,寻找与他合作的人。他很快就找到了另外四名敬业的工人。他们租了一个仓库,开始寻找二手材料的捐赠)”可知,Omar通过积极参与社区活动,与社区紧密合作,来收集支持和资源,这是他创办企业的策略之一。故选D。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据倒数第二段“A hardware store gave 2,000 gallons of paint that was still good but was being thrown away because it was past its expiration date (产品有效期).(一家五金店提供了2000加仑的油漆,这些油漆仍然很好,但因为过期而被扔掉了)”可知,五金店提供有用的资源帮到Omar的生意。故选B。
【7题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第二段“Although the South Bronx was one of the nation’s poorest and most polluted areas, with crowded roads and poisonous industrial sites, Omar saw a different kind of potential amidst its challenges. He envisioned a new approach to the mountains of discarded materials.(尽管南布朗克斯是美国最贫穷、污染最严重的地区之一,道路拥挤,工业场所有毒,但奥马尔在挑战中看到了一种不同的潜力。他设想了一种处理堆积如山的废弃材料的新方法)”结合文章讲述了Omar Freilla和他的团队在南布朗克斯创办企业,通过与当地社区合作,将被丢弃的材料重新利用,创造了一个繁荣的业务,并为社区提供了就业机会。可知,B选项“社区合作:变废为宝”最符合文章标题。故选B。

At Denver, many passengers got on the train which travelled east. In one coach, there sat a very pretty young woman, who was richly and beautifully dressed. Among the newcomers were two men. The younger one was good-looking with a bold, honest face; the other was a sad-faced person, large and dressed in cheap clothes. The two were handcuffed (用手铐铐住) together.
When they reached the coach, the only empty seats were the ones facing the pretty young woman. Here the pair seated themselves. The woman quickly looked at them, and then with a lovely smile, she held out her hand. When she spoke, her voice showed that she was used to speaking and being heard.
“Well, Mr. Easton, if you will make me speak first, I think I must. Don’t you ever say hello to old friends when you meet them in the West ”
The younger man looked surprised to hear her voice. He seemed a little embarrassed, but immediately he held her fingers with his left hand. “It’s Miss Fairchild, he said, with a smile. “I’ll ask you to excuse the other hand. I can’t use it just at present.”
He slightly raised his right hand, which was handcuffed to the left one of his partner. The delightful look in the woman’s eyes slowly changed to doubt and fear. Easton, with a little laugh, was about to speak again when the other cut him short. The sad-faced man had been watching the young woman’s face with his sharp, searching eyes.
“You’ll excuse me for speaking, Miss. But I see you know the marshal (警官) here. If you’ll ask him to speak a word for me in prison, he’ll do it. It’ll make things easier for me there. He’s taking me to Leavenworth prison. I’m going to be in prison for seven years.”

TikTok is making a mark on the world of publishing. Much of this is done through BookTok, the app’s community of users who comment on books. It is among the largest communities on the app; videos with this tag have been viewed 179 billion times, more than twice as many as BeautyTok. Whoever said books are dead has not spent much time on TikTok, nor in bookstores, which now have whole displays promoting titles “as seen on TikTok”.
Last year in Britain one in four book buyers used TikTok. Although the sales share is still very small, TikTok’s influence is significant and growing. The largest group of book buyers—women aged 54 and younger—are more likely to use the app than their male peers. TikTok recommendations influence their purchases, creating new literary stars and unearthing unlikely past ones, too.
One way to think about BookTok is as a book club for the Internet age. Just as stars like Oprah Winfrey and Barack Obama can cause copies to fly off bookstore shelves by updating their lists of recommended reads, BookTok does something similar. However, the tastemakers are not usually celebrities (名人) but attractive book girlies doing reading challenges, often in artfully lit bedrooms.
Some old-fashioned bibliophiles (藏书家) may suspect that BookTok is less about books than about people seeking attention by promoting them. But BookTokers are already swaying bestseller lists. For example, novels categorised as “romance” have enjoyed the biggest push due to the promotion of BookTok. In addition, because TikTok is so visual, the app has an outsize impact on sales of physical books in particular. E-books do not make such attractive visual props. BookTokers show off their notes and flick through pages. Filming themselves finishing a book in a single day against a backdrop of hundreds of them on shelves is all part of the performance, and viewers will be extra impressed if the book looks thick.
12. How has TikTok influenced the world of publishing
A. By promoting the celebrity authors and their works.
B. By encouraging people to read e-books.
C. By creating a community of users who comment on books.
D. By focusing on promoting e-books.
13. What does the underlined word “swaying” mean in the last paragraph
A. Changing direction rapidly. B. Causing change.
C. Moving back and forth. D. Remaining still.
14. What factor contributes to TikTok having a greater impact on the sales of physical books than e-books
A. The visual nature of TikTok makes physical books more appealing as props.
B. TikTok users prefer reading physical books over e-books.
C. E-books already have a more popular platform than TikTok.
D. TikTok offers discounts on physical books but not on e-books.
15. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the influence of TikTok on book sales
A. TikTok’s impact on book sales is limited to specific genres such as romantic novels.
B. The popularity of TikTok has significantly decreased the sales of physical books in bookstores.
C. TikTok has a great impact on the purchasing decisions of young women aged 54 and below.
D. TikTok’s influence on book sales primarily results from the recommendations of celebrities.
【答案】12. C 13. B 14. A 15. C
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇说明文。文章主要说明了TikTok正在对出版界产生影响,其中大部分是通过BookTok完成的,BookTok是该应用的用户社区,用户可以对书籍进行评论。
【12题详解】
细节理解题。根据第一段“TikTok is making a mark on the world of publishing. Much of this is done through BookTok, the app’s community of users who comment on books. It is among the largest communities on the app; videos with this tag have been viewed 179 billion times, more than twice as many as BeautyTok.(TikTok正在出版界留下印记。其中大部分是通过BookTok完成的,BookTok是该应用的用户社区,用户可以对书籍进行评论。它是该应用程序上最大的社区之一;带有这个标签的视频已经被观看了1790亿次,是BeautyTok的两倍多)”可知,TikTok通过创建一个用户评论书籍的社区影响出版界。故选C。
【13题详解】
词句猜测题。根据划线词后文“For example, novels categorised as “romance” have enjoyed the biggest push due to the promotion of BookTok.(例如,由于BookTok的推广,被归类为“浪漫”的小说受到了最大的推动)”可知,由于BookTok的推广,被归类为“浪漫”的小说受到了最大的推动,可知BookTokers引起了畅销书销量的变化。故划线词意思是“引起变化”。故选B。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“In addition, because TikTok is so visual, the app has an outsize impact on sales of physical books in particular. E-books do not make such attractive visual props. BookTokers show off their notes and flick through pages.(此外,由于TikTok非常视觉化,这款应用对实体书的销售产生了巨大的影响。电子书并不是如此吸引人的视觉道具。BookTokers展示他们的笔记并快速翻页)”可知,TikTok的视觉特性使得实体书作为道具更有吸引力导致TikTok对实体书的销售影响大于电子书。故选A。
【15题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“The largest group of book buyers—women aged 54 and younger—are more likely to use the app than their male peers.(最大的购书者群体是年龄在54岁及以下的女性,她们比男性更有可能使用这款应用)”可知,C选项“TikTok对54岁及以下年轻女性的购买决策有很大影响”正确。故选C。

Sometimes difficulties can bring people closer together. The snowstorm was supposed to hit the evening of Monday, Jan. 31. I was working from home, but I had to leave that afternoon and go to my office at First Nations University, so I could sign an emergency financial aid check for a student. I wasn’t worried. I figured I had more than enough time to make it to the office and get back home. I arrived at the office, finished the business successfully and brought the scarves I had prepared for my two daughters to the car. To be safe, I decided to take the country roads back home instead of the highway, which could fast become a skating rink.
However, the snow started earlier than expected-and it was coming down fast! The road soon switched from paved (柏油路) to gravel (碎石路), forcing me to slow down. The windows were fogging up and getting covered with snow. I didn’t have a clue where I was or even which side of the road I was on. What I knew was just that I was among several big farms. I stopped because I was afraid of driving into a farmer’s field. Luckily, I had filled up my car with gas. I kept the car running to stay warm and called 911. The dispatcher (调度员) told me to sit tight and wait things out for the night—nobody was coming to get me until morning, at the earliest.
Getting out to walk in a whiteout with zero visibility, high winds and a temperature around minus 4 degrees—when I didn’t even know where I was—wasn’t an option. It was now about 7 p. m. and dark. Misfortune never came alone. I just realized that my phone has run out of battery. I was at a loss and looked around to find a way to escape from the desperate situation. Suddenly, I saw a tall figure in a yellow raincoat shaking in the dark, carrying a flashlight and other farming tools. I invited him into the car and knew that he was Andy, a farmer living on the other side of the farm with his wife.

【答案】参考范文
The cold wind outside made him look pale and he was trembling. Without hesitation. I turned the air-conditioning up and offered him the scarves meant for my daughters. Wrapping them around himself, Andy felt much better, gratitude shining in his eyes. “I was out checking on the farm work, but the snowstorm hit earlier than expected.” he explained, his voice tinged with exhaustion. Knowing what happened, I planned to bring him back home. Therefore, with Andy’s knowledge of the surroundings and my vague sense of direction, we set off into the wintry night.
After driving in the darkness for a long time, we finally stopped before a farmhouse with lights still on. As we stepped out of the car, a lady who seemed to be Andy’s wife, rushed out, her face filled with worry and relief. Tears welled up in her eyes as she embraced her husband tightly, gratitude pouring from every gesture. As a show of appreciation, they invited me inside for a warm cup of tea, insisting I stay the night. Surrounded by the warmth of their hospitality, we shared stories and laughter late into the night, the bond forged in adversity growing stronger with each passing moment.

第二部分 阅读(共两节,满分50分)
第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
For some, rice is simply bought at the market, ready to take home and steam or boil.
B
D To provide job opportunities for skilled workers in the area.
5. How did Omar start his business in the South Bronx
A. He relied on his personal savings to fund the business.
B He distributed flyers to ask for donations from neighbors.

B. By encouraging people to read e-books.
C. By creating a community of users who comment on books.
