As a child, Liu Wenwen disliked the suona, a “loud, high-pitched” traditional Chinese musical instrument, an ancestral heritage of her family that was to become her career.
Her peers at primary school laughed at her, saying her whole family was engaged only in “weddings and funerals.” Indeed, these are the two major occasions where the horn-like wind instrument is played in China’s rural areas. Liu felt ashamed. People admired things that were modern and international. “Suona, in comparison, was considered an art of the hillbilly.” Her father’s family has performed suona for seven generations.
The music is rooted in Liu’s DNA, but it takes time and hard work to become a skilled musician. The instrument was so loud that it annoyed the neighbors when she practiced at home. “So my parents would wake me up at 4 a.m. every day and take me to practice outside in a park.”
While she followed her parents to play the suona as a child, she only fell in love with the instrument at university. She found suona music beautiful for the first time in 2008, when she entered Shanghai Conservatory of Music to learn the instrument more systematically.
On China’s social media platforms, her name is often followed by a video of her live performance at a concert in Sydney, Australia, alongside award-winning composer Tan Dun in 2017. For her debut on the international stage, she was playing Hundreds of Birds Paying Homage to Phoenix, a masterpiece that often represents excellence in suona performance.
Liu promoted the “hillbilly” music to an international audience, thanks to Tan and his team, who recomposed the traditional music and arranged the piece into an orchestra. “It was a smooth dialogue between a Chinese instrument and a Western orchestra, loved by the musicians and audience alike,” she said. “I felt my hard work had paid off. I trained for over 20 years, probably just to win cheers and applause for traditional Chinese music on the international stage.”
4. What can we learn about Liu from the first two paragraphs
A. She was born into a musical family.
B. She enjoyed playing the suona as a child.
C. She showed a talent for suona when she was young.
D. She felt ashamed of admiring modern and international things.
5. Why did Liu get up early to practice playing the suona
A. To get more time for her practice. B. To avoid disturbing the neighbors.
C. To spend more time with her parents. D. To make practising the suona a habit.
6. What can we infer from the last two paragraphs
A. Audience like Chinese instruments better than Western orchestra.
B. Liu’s performance at a Sydney concert got her recognized by the public.
C. Liu promoted traditional Chinese music to the whole world with her parents.
D. Social media is a major platform to carry forward traditional Chinese music.
7. In which part of the newspaper can we read the passage

Women and girls already struggle with gender inequality, but when extreme weather damages a community, the UN found that inequalities worsen.
To explore the complex links between gender and climate change, CNN worked with seven women photojournalists to document the challenges women and girls face. This visual project gives a snapshot of the numerous ways climate crisis is changing their lives, but also shows how they are fighting back.
The Center for Girls’ Education runs a series of programs in Nigeria to help girls stay in school. One in every five of the world’s children who are out of school is in Nigeria, according to UNICEF, and it is girls who are impacted the most. More than 10 million children between 5 and 14 years old are absent from classrooms across Nigeria, according to UNICEF. For girls, the statistics are even bleaker: in states in the northeast and northwest of the country, fewer than half attend school.
This education crisis is the result of a tangle of factors, but against the backdrop of these individual factors is the broader context of the climate crisis. Nigeria is growing hotter and dryer, and extreme weather such as flash floods and landslides are becoming fiercer and more frequent. Climate disasters can make schools inaccessible and classrooms munities struggling to cope with extreme weather sometimes turn to their children to help or to earn extra money to support the family. And girls, whose attendance at school is already discouraged in some communities, are often most affected.
There are efforts to support girls’ education and equip them with the resources to cope with a fast-changing climate. The Center for Girls’ Education in the northern Nigerian city of Zaria runs programs to help girls stay in school and offers training on how to cope with the impacts of extreme weather. “I feel when we give the girls education on climate change, how to ease it, it will go a long way in helping the girls in how to support themselves in times of difficulties, and even help them prepare for it,” said Habiba Mohammed, director of the Center for Girls’ Education.

C. Worsening weather conditions. D. Inaccessible community resources.
11. What does Habiba Mohammed think of the measures taken to help girls
A. Costly. B. Creative.
C. Short-lived. D. Far-reaching.

When TikTok videos emerged showing “Taylor Swift” making a coin disappear and enjoying a lollipop, the account name was the only obvious clue that this wasn’t the real deal. The creator of the “deeptaylorswift” account on the social media platform was using “deepfake” technology to show a machine generated version of the famous singer performing magic tricks.
A new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America provides a measure of how far the technology has progressed. The results suggest that real humans can easily fall for machine-generated faces—and even interpret them as more trustworthy than the genuine article. “We found that not only are synthetic (合成的) faces highly realistic, they are regarded more trustworthy than real faces,” says study co-author Hany Farid, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley. The result raises concerns that these faces could be highly effective when used for immoral purposes.
After compiling 400 real faces matched to 400 synthetic versions, the researchers asked 315 people to distinguish real from fake among a selection of 128 of the images. Another group of 219 participants got some training and feedback about how to spot fakes as they tried to distinguish the faces. Finally, a third group of 223 participants each rated a selection of 128 of the images for trustworthiness on a scale of one (very untrustworthy) to seven (very trustworthy). The first group did not do better than a coin toss at telling real faces from fake ones, with an average accuracy of 48.2 percent. The second group failed to show dramatic improvement, receiving only about 59 percent, even with feedback about those participants’ choices. The group rating trustworthiness gave the synthetic faces a slightly higher average rating of 4.82, compared with 4.48 for real people.
The authors of the study end with a conclusion after emphasizing that deceptive (欺骗性的) uses of deepfakes will continue to pose a threat: “We, therefore, encourage those developing these technologies to consider whether the associated risks are greater than their benefits,” they write. “If so, then we discourage the development of technology simply because it is possible.”
12. What can we learn from the first two paragraphs
A. People have an affection for “deepfake” technology.
B. Machine-generated faces are thought of as untrustworthy.
C. Taylor Swift can make a coin disappear and enjoy a lollipop.
D. Machine-generated faces raise concerns for immoral purposes.
13. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. Limitations of the study. B. Reasons for the study findings.
C. Suggestions for further studies. D. Explanations for the research process.
14. What is the study authors’ attitude towards the uses of deepfakes
A. Disapproving. B. Objective. C. Indifferent. D. Favourable.

“Will you give my kite a lift ” said my little nephew to his sister, after trying in vain to make it fly by dragging it along the ground. Lucy very kindly took it up and threw it into the air, but her brother neglecting to run off at the same moment, the kite fell down again. “Ah! Now, how awkward you are!” said the little fellow. “It was your fault entirely,” answered his sister. “Try again.”
Lucy once more took up the kite. But now John was in too great a hurry; he ran off so suddenly that he pulled the kite out of her hand, and it fell flat as before. “Well, who is to blame now ” asked Lucy. “Try again,” said I. They did, and with more care; but a side wind coming suddenly, as Lucy let go the kite, it was blown against some bushes, and the tail became twisted in a moment, leaving the poor kite hanging with its head downward.
“There, there!” exclaimed John. “That comes of your throwing it all to one side.” “As if I could make the wind blow straight,” said Lucy. In the meantime, I went to the kite’s assistance; and having disengaged the long tail, I rolled it up, saying, “Come, children, there are too many trees here; let us find a more open space, and then try again.”
We presently found a nice grassplot, at one side of which I took my stand; and all things being prepared, I tossed the kite up just as little John ran off. It rose with all the dignity of a balloon, and promised a lofty flight; but John, delighted to find it pulling so hard at the string, stopped short to look upward and admire. The string loosened, the kite wavered, and, the wind not being very favorable, down came the kite to the grass. “John, you should not have stopped,” said I. “However, try again.”

【答案】 “I won’t try anymore,” he replied to me, rather upset. “It is of no use, you see. The kite won’t fly, and I don’t want to be troubled with it any longer.” With these words, he tried hard to hold back the tears. “Oh, my little man! Would you give up the sport, after all the pains we have taken both to make and to fly the kite A few disappointments ought not to discourage us.” I stroked his hair and handed him the stick firmly, “Come on and now try again.” And he did try with all his efforts, for the kite was carried upward on the breeze as lightly as a feather, and finally, we made it!
We stood there, gazing on the kite high up in the blue sky. “Look, look, how high it flies!” We all cheered and jumped with wild joy. After enjoying the sight as long as he pleased, little John proceeded to roll up the string slowly; and when the kite fell, he took it up with great merriment and care. “Shall we come out tomorrow, aunt, and try again ” John looked at me eagerly. “Of course, dear children,” I replied with a smile, adding, “And I hope you can recognize the value of perseverance, even when nothing more depends upon it than the flying of a kite. Whenever you fail in your attempts to do any good thing, let your motto be—try again.”

A. Technology. B. Education.
C. People. D. Entertainment.

“I feel when we give the girls education on climate change how to ease it, it will go a long way in helping the girls in how to support themselves in times of difficulties, and even help them prepare for it,” said Habiba Mohammed, director of the Center for Girls’ Education.
8. What does the underlined phrase “gives a snapshot of” mean in Paragraph 2
A. Contrasts. B. Strengthens. C. Prevents. D. Reveals.
9. How does Paragraph 3 develop
A. By listing figures. B. By making comparison.
C. By giving examples. D. By drawing conclusions.
10. What contributes to girls’ absence from school in Nigeria
A. Tense family relationship. B. Unbearable school pressure.
