Four days after Dad’s 67th birthday, he had a heart attack. Luckily, he survived. But something inside him had died. His enthusiasm for life was gone. He refused to follow doctor’s orders, and his sour attitude made everyone upset when they visited him. Dad was left alone.
So I asked Dad to come to live with me on my small farm, hoping the fresh air would help him adjust. Within a week after he moved in, I regretted the invitation. He criticized everything I did. I became frustrated. Something had to be done.
One day I read an article which said when given dogs, depressed patients would be better off. So I drove to the animal shelter that afternoon. As soon as I got there, a pointer’s eyes caught my attention. They watched me calmly.
A staff member said: “He got here two weeks ago and we’ve heard nothing. His time is up tomorrow.”
I turned to the man in horror. “You mean you’re going to kill him”
“Ma’am,” he said gently. “We don’t have room for every unclaimed dog.”
The police’s calm brown eyes awaited my decision. “I’ll take him,” I said.
I drove home with the dog on the front seat beside me. I was helping it out of the car when Dad walked onto the front porch. “Look what I got you!” I said excitedly.
Dad wrinkled his face. “I don’t want it,” he muttered, turning back towards the house. Then, suddenly, the dog pulled free from my grasp. He sat down in front of my Dad.
Dad’s anger melted, and soon he was hugging the dog.
This was the beginning of a warm friendship. Dad named the dog Cheyenne. Together they spent long hours walking down dusty lanes and relaxing on the banks of streams.
Dad’s bitterness faded, and he and Cheyenne went on to make many friends. Then, late one night two years later, I felt Cheyenne’s cold nose burrowing (搜寻) through my bed covers. He had never before come into my bedroom at night. I ran into my father’s room and found that he had passed away.
Two days later, my shock and grief deepened when I discovered Cheyenne lying dead beside Dad’s bed. As I buried him near their favorite stream, I silently thanked the dog for restoring Dad’s peace of mind.

For six hundred years, the Tower of London’s most exotic (异域风情的) prisoners were animals.
The Menagerie (动物园) began as a result of kings exchanging rare and strange animals as gifts. In 1235, Henry III was delighted to be presented with three wildcats by the Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II. These inspired him to start a zoo at the Tower. Henry’s ‘wildcats’, although described as leopards, were probably lions. These are the ancestors of the three lions that still appear on the England football team’s shirts today.
In 1252 the lions were joined by a white bear probably a polar bear — given by the King of Norway. In 1255, the King of France sent the first elephant ever seen in England and people flocked together to see the novel (新奇的) sight. Sadly, the elephant died two years later.
Poor treatment and cramped conditions meant many of the animals did not survive for long. But the Menagerie continued to grow. Edward I created a permanent new home for the Menagerie at the western entrance to the Tower in what became known as the Lion Tower. The terrifying sounds and smells of wild animals must have both impressed and scared visitors.
By 1622, the collection had been extended to include three eagles, two pumas, a tiger and a jackal, as well as lions and leopards, who were the main attractions.
However, the end of the Menagerie came in the 1830s. Campaigners had begun to raise concerns, and the animals were expensive, occasionally dangerous and a nuisance to the guardsmen. The Duke of Wellington sent 150 of the beasts to a new zoo in Regent’s Park, today’s London Zoo.
Despite Alfred Cops’s best efforts to carry on, several further incidents including an escaped wolf and a monkey that bit a guardsman’s leg convinced King William IV to shut down the Menagerie for good in 1835. The remaining animals were sold to zoos and travelling shows and the Lion Tower was later pulled down.
8. What do we know about the elephant presented in 1255
A. It caused big trouble. B. It received much attention.
C. It lived painfully in the Lion Tower. D. It died before the polar bear came in.
9. How many types of animals at the Menagerie are mentioned in the text
A. Eight. B. Nine. C. Ten. D. Eleven.
10. For what reason was the Menagerie closed at last
A. Security concerns. B. The decline of tourism.
C. Pressure from campaigners. D. Financial burden to raise the animals.
11. Which is the best title for the text
A. The Royal Menagerie B. Gifts Presented to the King
C. Tourist Attractions in London D. Miserable Life in the Lion Tower
D
Each year, Jon Aars, a senior researcher at the Norwegian Polar Institute and his colleagues capture around 70 polar bears in Svalbard and fit them with a tracking collar (颈圈) which continuously records movement. Once a day the collar makes a satellite call, sending the last 24 hours of data back to the Institute. “Data from movement has been very important to understand how they react and how they might respond to climate change,” Aars explains.
A warming climate means a vast amount of the region, and rising temperatures are also preventing seasonal ice which melts and recurs annually from forming in places it once did. Several seal species — polar bears’ main prey (猎物) — rely on sea ice, and more often than not, so do polar bears. But these creatures are being forced to move with the times.
“Because conditions change, polar bears will spend more time on land and look for different options,” Aars explains. “They hunt reindeer (驯鹿) and they will take more birds and eggs. We have seen that bears are in different areas from where they used to be—so much further north.”
According to NASA, summer ice in the Arctic is decreasing by more than each decade, and this year the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) reported the second lowest levels of summer sea ice ever recorded. The 14 lowest levels of sea ice have all occurred in the past 14 years, according to the NSIDC.
“You don’t find polar bears anywhere in the Arctic where you don’t have sea ice at least seasonally,” says Aars! “Changes are so significant and so fast: we will reach some stage in the future where it will get much harder to be a polar bear in Svalbard.”
12. Why does the collar make a satellite call daily
A. To obtain some information.
B. To offer necessary help to polar bears.
C. To see whether polar bears are still alive.
D. To know if polar bears are being attacked.
13. What does the third paragraph mainly tell us
A. Why polar bears prefer birds. B. What has caused the changes.
C. Where polar bears can be found. D. How polar bears react to the changes.
14. What affects polar bears’ life the most
A. Freezing weather. B. Decreasing sea ice.
C. More and more seals. D. People’s hunting them.
15. What can we infer about the sea ice from paragraph 4
A. It has been staying the same in the past ten years.
B. It started decreasing less than a decade ago.
C. It is becoming less and less.
D. It is getting more and more.

But when she went downstairs this morning, her father, mother and brother were eating cereal at the table, just like any other day. No one even said “Happy birthday.”
When the phone rang and her mother announced that Lisa’s aunt wanted to speak with her, she knew that it must be to wish her the best on her 10th birthday. But to Lisa’s surprise, her aunt simply wanted to remind her to pick up her mail the next week while her aunt was out of town.
Lisa was quite confused. She thought that her family would say something about her special day, but she didn’t want to seem upset. She tried to be cheerful. After all, she was looking forward to meeting her friends in the park soon. Surely they were going to be excited about her birthday.

“Because it’s Saturday and the weather is great!” Jane replied.
Lisa nodded, but looked down in disappointment.
Soon the rest of her friends arrived, and they all had a good time playing soccer and spending time together. But Lisa couldn’t help but think that it was strange that none of them had mentioned her birthday.

A most popular voyage is one that starts from Hong Kong to Singapore.

A 13. D 14. B 15. C

根据第一段“Each year, Jon Aars, a senior researcher at the Norwegian Polar Institute and his colleagues capture around 70 polar beans in Svalbard and fit them with a tracking collar (颈圈) which continuously records movement. Once a day the collar makes a satellite call, sending the last 24 hours of data back to the Institute. ‘Data from movement has been very important to understand how they react and how they might respond to climate change,’ Aars explains. 故选A。
由第三段“‘Because conditions change, polar bears will spend more time on land and look for different options,’ explains. ‘They hunt reindeer (驯鹿) and they will take more birds and eggs. We have seen that bears are in different areas from where they used to be—so much further north.’(‘由于环境变化,北极熊将在陆地上停留更多时间,寻找不同的选择。’
根据第二段“A warming climate means a vast amount of the region, and rising temperatures are also preventing seasonal ice which melts and recurs annually from forming in places it once did. Several seal species — polar bears’ main prey (猎物) — rely on sea ice, and more often than not, so do polar bears. But these creatures are being forced to move with the times.(气候变暖意味着该地区面积巨大,气温上升也阻止了每年都会融化并反复在曾经出现过的地方再次出现的季节性冰的形成。几种海豹物种——北极熊的主要猎物——依赖海冰,通常情况下北极熊也是如此。)”可知,北极熊以及其主要猎物几种海豹物种都依赖海冰,没有海冰海豹无法生存,北极熊也会缺少食物;由最后一段“‘You don’t find polar bears anywhere in the Arctic where you don’t have sea ice at least seasonally,’ says Aars! ‘Changes are so significant and so fast: we will reach some stage in the future where it will get much harder to be a polar bear in Svalbard.’(‘在北极任何一个至少季节性没有海冰的地方,你都找不到北极熊,’Aars! ‘变化如此之大,如此之快:我们将在未来的某个阶段,在斯瓦尔巴群岛作为一只北极熊会变得更加困难。’) ”可知在北极任何一个至少季节性没有海冰的地方,都没有北极熊;由此可知,海冰对北极熊非常重要,海冰减少对北极熊的生活影响最大。故选B。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段中“According to NASA, summer ice in the Arctic is decreasing by more than each decade, and this year the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) reported the second lowest levels of summer sea ice ever recorded. The 14 lowest levels of sea ice have all occurred in the past 14 years, according to the NSIDC.(根据美国国家航空航天局数据,北极的夏季冰层每个十年都在减少,今年国家冰雪数据中心(NSIDC)报告的夏季海冰水平是有记录以来第二低的。根据NSIDC的数据,14个最低水平的海冰都发生在过去14年中。)”可知,北极的夏季冰层一直在减少,14个最低水平的海冰都发生在过去14年中,由此可推知,海冰在变得越来越少。故选C。

The kitchen table was full of fresh fruit and juice, and her family had even bought lots of fresh flowers to put on the table.
When Lisa arrived at the park, her friend Jane was the first to greet her. “Nice day, isn’t it, Lisa ” she asked.
Lisa, ready for her friend to wish her a happy birthday, responded excitedly, “Yes, it is! It’s a great day. You know why ”

On stepping in, Lisa was quite surprised. The living room was beautifully decorated, yet nobody was in sight. Before Lisa realized it, an excited shout came, “A surprise”. People crowded from behind the door, sofa and cupboard. Lisa saw her mother, father, brother, aunt, Jane and other friends she just said goodbye to standing around her, all laughing. “They all remember my birthday!” thought Lisa. Instantly, she felt her eyes a little wet. On the table lay a lovely birthday cake and her aunt was signaling all to gather around.
When the birthday candles were lit, the warmest moment came. Everyone sent best wishes to Lisa heartily and gifts began to pile up in her arms. Then came the birthday song sung gently together. In the soft candlelight, every smiling face was so touching. Looking around, Lisa felt a strong feeling arise, and that was happiness. “ How happy I am! I’m so blessed to have so many people to love me” Lisa thought. Tears welled up into her eyes again.
