Electric Shocks Can Be Fatal
Government statistics recently showed that in the UK, more than 3,000 people a year experience electric shocks in their homes. A smaller number of people are killed after they touch the power lines outside their homes. Electric shocks can cause a person's heart or breath to stop and are potentially fatal. It is essential for people to learn basic techniques to deal with such emergencies.
What to do
● If you are the first person to reach someone who has an electric shock, don't touch him or her!
● If the victim is still holding the appliance that gives him or her the shock (e.g. a hair dryer), unplug it or turn off the power at its source. Under no circumstances can you try to move the appliance with your hands!
● If you can't turn off the power, use a piece of wood, like a broom handle or a chair, to separate the victim from the appliance or the power source. You may even be able to do this with a folded newspaper.
● The victim must remain lying down. If he or she is unconscious, the victim should be placed on his or her side. But he or she should not be moved if there is a possibility of neck or spine injuries unless it is absolutely necessary.
● It is essential to maintain the victim's body heat, so make sure you cover him or her with a blanket before you do anything else. If the victim is not breathing, apply mouth-to-mouth resuscitation Keep the victim's head low until professional help arrives.
● If the electric shock has been caused by an external power line, the dangers to the victim and to anybody providing first aid are much greater.
16. What kind of passage is it
A. An advertisement. B. A horror story.
C. A news report. D. First aid emergency advice.
17. The underlined sentence implies that ________.
A. you should move the appliance
B. you should pick up the appliance and turn off the electricity
C. it is very dangerous to touch the appliance with your hands
D. it is unnecessary to unplug the appliance with your hands
18. When a person has got an electric shock, you should ________.
A. separate the victim from the appliance and let him sit up
B. keep the victim warm and help him or her breathe again
C. move the victim onto his or her side if he or she has got neck injuries
D. keep the victim's head high until professional help arrives

As a clueless freshman, I waltzed into my first creative writing course by accident, thinking it was a literature class on how to read stories, not how to write them.
When the teacher introduced the course, I realized my mistake. The credits I earned from the course wouldn’t count toward my major. By the end of the session, however, I decided that I had to be a part of the course. Perhaps, as a lifelong reader, I was eager to understand how stories worked their magic.
But taking the class would be impossible: I wasn’t even on the waitlist. That’s when the teacher asked for a volunteer to submit the first workshop story.
Silence blanketed the room. No one risked eye contact. Whoever volunteered would have to write a whole story in a week. Perhaps they, like me, had never written one before.
Seizing my chance, I raised my hand and asked, “If I go first, will you give me a spot in the class ” He said he would.
So, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite.
Years later, I’d completed a degree in creative writing and was working on a novel when a literary agent (经纪人) asked to read the first 50 pages of my draft. But I wasn’t comfortable showing her anything; the novel was far from done.
Throughout graduate school, I’d been advised many times not to contact agents until I have a complete draft. In the meanwhile, I knew the beginning of my story was attractive and that the agent might not remember me after a year.
So, once again, instead of keeping my head down and avoiding eye contact, I did the opposite. I sent her the first three chapters. A month later, she signed me on the strength of those chapters alone. She has since seen me through the publication of three novels.
Determination, focus, perseverance—the qualities that I consider crucial in getting me into Stanford no doubt helped me become the novelist I am today. And yet if I’d trained my gaze only on the path ahead, I would have missed so many happy accidents, so many beautiful opportunities to look up, raise my hand, and say yes.
19. What made the author finally decide to take the course
A. The popularity of the course.
B. Her curiosity about story writing.
C. Her confidence in her writing skills.
D. The need to get credits for her degree.
20. The author volunteered to write the first workshop story to
A. challenge herself B. impress the teacher
C. display her talent D. win a place in the class
21. The author sent her first three chapters to the agent because
A. her friends advised her to do so
B. her story was attractive to readers
C. the agent asked her to turn in the work
D. she wanted to get the chance of publication
22. What does the passage mainly tell us
A. Action speaks louder than words.
B. Chance favors only the prepared mind.
C. Success comes to those who will and dare.
D. Confidence leads to growth and fulfillment.

Have you ever bought a new car and started noticing the exact color and model of car everywhere Has that type of car just become popular in your city Were they there before Or are you just going crazy
You’re not going crazy. The reason you are now just noticing them is what psychologists call “priming”. Basically, the cars were always there. You just didn’t recognize them consciously. However, when that certain model of car becomes part of your conscious thinking, you start “automatically” recognizing all of the other cars that are the same, because you are already “primed” to do so.
The priming effect takes many forms. In one study, students were asked to walk around a room for 5 minutes at a rate of 30 steps per minute, which was about one-third their normal pace. After this brief experience, the participants were much quicker to recognize words related to old age, such as forgetful, old, and lonely. Reciprocal priming effects tend to produce a coherent reaction: if you are primed to think of old age, you would tend to act old, and acting old would reinforce the thought of old age. This research shows that the way we think influences the way we act, and the way we act influences the way we think.
A similar conclusion was reached by the American psychologist William James a century ago, but he emphasized the effect on feeling. “Actions seem to follow feeling, but really actions and feeling go together; and by regulating the action, which is under the more direct control of the will, we can indirectly regulate the feeling, which is not. Thus the path to cheerfulness, should our cheerfulness be lost, is to sit up cheerfully and to act and speak as if cheerfulness were already there.”
So, that’s it. If you want to be happy, just sit up and act happy. Based on these scientific findings, we can adopt certain priming effects to help make ourselves consistently happier.
One thing we have in common is our ability to think, and thus feel. Pleasant thoughts have been proven to produce the chemicals that make us feel happy, particularly thoughts and feelings of gratitude. When we purposefully go through and think about the things we’re grateful for and deliberately feel as much gratitude as we can, we are flooding our mind with the “happy chemicals”. Furthermore, by consciously thinking, feeling and expressing gratitude, we will not only be happier in the moment, we will be “primed” to recognize the things in our life to appreciate. Each time this happens, the “happy chemicals” will be produced. Do this every day and we will become consistently happier. This makes up for the momentary happiness we gain from eating chocolate or buying new clothes. More than that, combining thoughts of gratitude with happy acts like smiling and laughing will have a supplementary positive effect on our state of mind.
23. Which of the following is an example of the priming effect
A. Walking much faster after attending a lecture about old age.
B Donating money to the poor after seeing pictures of cute cats.
C. Learning about various types of cars after purchasing the first car.
D. Completing SO_P as SOUP rather than SOAP after seeing the word EAT.
24. What does the underlined word “reciprocal” in Paragraph 3 probably mean
A. Related. B. Two-way. C. Well-rounded. D. Opposite.
25. What will the author probably agree with
A. Eating or shopping leads to consistent feelings of happiness.
B. Our will has greater control over emotions than over actions.
C. Happy chemicals make us think about the things we’re grateful for.
D. Practicing gratitude frequently prepares us for long-term happiness.
26. Which of the following would be the best title for the passage
A. Prime Yourself to Be Happier
B. Share Happiness to Enhance Wellbeing
C. Why Gratitude Is Important in Psychology
D. How Happy Chemicals Affect People’s Thoughts

Would you turn down the chance to become a smart cookie We’ve been longing for quick fixes that could increase our intelligence (智力). Today, people’s hopes lie in brain training apps as a speedy “digital pill”. The more you play, the smarter you will get—or so some apps tell us. But is this digital-shortcut all that it seems to be
The use of games for serious purposes has become widespread with the development of the Internet and smartphones. Brain training apps are typical, frequently featured by Apple and Google’s app stores. Many of such apps say that they are backed by “science”. Even if there were agreement around what makes general intelligence, the idea that increasing it would be as simple as practising a few mini-games every day goes against our current discovery about thinking and learning.
Several major studies, surveying users across a wide variety of apps, have found that they have little to no effect on users’ performance. A 2021 study by researchers discovered brain training has no significant effect on cognitive (认知的) functioning in the “real world”. The positive effects reported are limited to the very specific mini-games and tasks, such as memorizing lists of words or numbers, or performing mental calculation (心算). So, if your job or your calling in life needs summing quickly or remembering all your friends’ phone numbers, these apps will do. But if you are expecting them to improve your ability to write a novel or form a complex (复杂的) spreadsheet, you have to look elsewhere. Yet, despite the fact that they hardly work, brain training apps play a leading role, partly because they are regarded to be scientific and partly because users think they are fun.
As a co-creator of one of the most popular forms of gamification (游戏化) noted, what is especially disappointing about these apps is that they just aren’t that fun—at least, not compared with the various thoughtful board games and video games coming out every day. Puzzle video games, such as Baba Is You and detective games like Return of the Obra Dinn, see players apply their skill at reasoning, memory and concentration in a far more challenging and engaging (吸引人的) way.
If you aren’t into games, simply go for a walk or learn how to dance. They are likely to be more effective than a brain training app in sharpening your mind. These activities might not lead to an increased IQ, but they are sure to engage your brain deeply while having fun—something I can by no means say of brain training apps.
27. Which of the following would the author probably agree with
A. Brain training apps are backed by science.
B. Creativity can be improved with brain training apps.
C. Gamification has little to do with increasing intelligence.
D. Increasing IQ is as simple as practising a few mini-games every day.
28. According to the passage, brain training apps are still popular because ________.
A. they turn mental exercises into quick games
B. they are considered both scientific and interesting
C. they are more effective in shaping our minds than other games
D. they have significant effects on the cognitive functioning in the “real world”
29. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. A Smart Cookie or Not B. There’s No App for That
C. What will Games Lead Us to D. A Digital Pill for Intelligence

Can a Robot Really Freestyle
Engineers at the Georgia Institute of Technology, led by Gil Weinberg, have designed the first musical robot capable of not only playing music, but creating it. His name is Shimon. Weinberg, who is a musician, engineer, and professor of musical technology, found himself in a creative rut (俗套) and decided to create a robot that could inspire him with new musical ideas. Shimon was trained on a vast data set of everything from progressive rock to jazz to rap. His works really surprise human listeners.
Up until recent advancements, applications of AI (artificial intelligence) have mostly consisted of well-defined tasks, but many are concerned that new technology like Shimon could result in lost jobs for millions of people, even those in creative industry.
While the concern of an offing future in which humans are entirely replaced by robots certainly isn’t unfounded, a much more likely future is one in which robots work alongside humans to improve their work. Experts say that AI will actually create jobs for humans, not des troy them. The Guardian recently reported that by 2037, AI will create more than 7 million new jobs in the healthcare, education, and science fields in the UK.
Shimon is showing us what can happen when robots don’t just work for us, but with us. Instead of putting any of our favorite musicians out of work, robots will certainly be challenging and inspiring them in new ways. The cooperation between humans and robots can produce new and attractive music, leading to novel musical outcomes. Thanks to the innovation of Weinberg and his team, rap battles, Jam sessions, and symphony orchestras alike may begin to look and act considerably different.

D 17. C 18. B

B. Donating money to the poor after seeing pictures of cute cats.

根据第三段“In one study, students were asked to walk around a room for 5 minutes at a rate of 30 steps per minute, which was about one-third their normal pace. After this brief experience, the participants were much quicker to recognize words related to old age, such as forgetful, old, and lonely.(在一项研究中,学生们被要求以每分钟30步的速度在一个房间里走5分钟,这大约是他们正常速度的三分之一。
根据第三段“Reciprocal priming effects tend to produce a coherent reaction: if you are primed to think of old age, you would tend to act old, and acting old would reinforce the thought of old age. This research shows that the way we think influences the way we act, and the way we act influences the way we think.(Reciprocal启动效应往往会产生连贯的反应:如果你被启动想到老年,你就会倾向于表现得很老,而表现得很老会强化老年的想法。这项研究表明,我们的思维方式影响我们的行为方式,而我们的行为方式又影响我们的思维方式)”可知,这里陈述的是启动效应的一个形式,思维影响行为,行为又反过来影响思维,说明Reciprocal意为“交互的,互相的”,与Two-way意思相同,故选B项。
【25题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Furthermore, by consciously thinking, feeling and expressing gratitude, we will not only be happier in the moment, we will be ‘primed’ to recognize the things in our life to appreciate. Each time this happens, the ‘happy chemicals’ will be produced. Do this every day and we will become consistently happier. This makes up for the momentary happiness we gain from eating chocolate or buying new clothes. More than that, combining thoughts of gratitude with happy act s like smiling and laughing will have a supplementary positive effect on our state of mind.(此外,通过有意识地思考、感受和表达感激之情,我们不仅会在当下更快乐,还会‘准备好’认识到生活中值得欣赏的事物。
通读全文,尤其倒数第二段“So, that’s it. If you want to be happy, just sit up and act happy. Based on these scientific findings, we can adopt certain priming effects to help make ourselves consistently happier. 故选A项。

28. According to the passage brain training apps are still popular because ________.
A. they turn mental exercises into quick games
B. they are considered both scientific and interesting
C. they are more effective in shaping our minds than other games
D. they have significant effects on the cognitive functioning in the “real world”
29. Which would be the best title for the passage
A. A Smart Cookie or Not B. There’s No App for That
C. What will Games Lead Us to D. A Digital Pill for Intelligence
C 28. B 29. B

根据第二段最后一句“Even if there were agreement around what makes general intelligence, the idea that increasing it would be as simple as practising a few mini-games every day goes against our current discovery about thinking and learning. (即使人们对一般智力的形成达成了一致,但增加一般智力只需每天练习几个小游戏就可以了,这一想法与我们目前关于思考和学习的发现背道而驰。)”可知,作者认为称每天练习小游戏能够提升智力是不准确的,即可推测,作者不赞同通过游戏化能够增加智力这一说法。故选C项。
【28题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段最后一句“Yet, despite the fact that they hardly work, brain training apps play a leading role, partly because they are regarded to be scientific and partly because users think they are fun. (然而,尽管大脑训练应用程序几乎不起作用,但它们发挥着主导作用,部分原因是因为它们被认为是科学的,部分原因在于用户认为它们很有趣。)”可知,这些程序流行的原因是用户认为它们有趣且科学。故选B项。
【29题详解】
主旨大意题。根据第一段二三句“We’ve been longing for quick fixes that could increase our intelligence (智力). Today, people’s hopes lie in brain training apps as a speedy “digital pill”. (我们一直渴望快速解决问题,以提高我们的智力。今天,人们的希望寄托于作为一种快速的“数字药丸”的大脑训练应用程序们上。)”可推测,本文探讨的核心在于这些“数字药丸”;根据用于引出下文的第一段最后一句“But is this digital-shortcut all that it seems to be (但是,这条数字捷径看起来就是这样吗?)”可知,作者对这些“数字药丸”有没有效果表示存疑;而最后一段一二句“If you aren’t into games, simply go for a walk or learn how to dance. They are likely to be more effective than a brain training app in sharpening your mind. (如果你不喜欢游戏,那就去散步或学习跳舞。它们可能能比大脑训练应用程序更有效地磨砺你的头脑。)”指出作者最终得出结论,没有app类的“数字药丸”对提升智力有效,这是本文的标题。故选B项。
