秋分一到,谷场见稻。
立了冬,把地耕,能使土地养分增。
What did farmers in the past rely on for a good harvest
Farmers mainly relied on their knowledge and experience accumulated over many years.
For example, they gained knowledge about the 24 solar terms, which were developed in ancient China through observing the changes of seasons, astronomy and other natural phenomena.
They were also familiar with many proverbs related to farming, which were passed from one generation to the next.
Knowledge and experience of this kind helped farmers plan crop production and farming activities, such as when to sow seeds and how to predict the weather, which promised them a good harvest.
How do you think farmers could use technology to make their work easier
Precision farming refers to a farming technique that uses advanced technologies to make farming more accurate and effective while reducing its environmental footprint.
Read the article and complete the chart below with the main idea of each paragraph.

Modern technology has turned farming into a
highly precise industry.
Precision farming boasts a diverse range of application capabilities at different stages of food production.
Precision farming can reach a much higher level
with the application of artificial intelligence.
Precision farming will become more effective and have an even greater impact on how we grow our food.
Introduction
Para. 1:
What is the deep-rooted image of a traditional farmer
What cause this image to be changed
What does precision farming aim to do
At noon they weed with hoes;
their sweat drips on the soil.
Each bowl of rice, who knows
Is the fruit of hard toil.
锄禾日当午,
汗滴禾下土
谁知盘中餐,
粒粒皆辛苦。
the deep-rooted image:
a farmer working in a field under the baking sun, face covered in sweat.
Para. 1:
What is the deep-rooted image of a traditional farmer
What cause this image to be changed
What does precision farming aim to do
The deep-rooted image changed by the collaboration between farming and technology which has given rise to precision farming
(同义:a combination of….; an integration of….)
Para. 1:
What is the deep-rooted image of a traditional farmer
What cause this image to be changed
What does precision farming aim to do
It aims to improve food production and conserve the environment by reducing a farm’s input and increasing its output.
Traditional farming has been changed by
the advent of modern technology/the wave of innovation.
n. 出现
n. 创新
This latest wave of innovation offers farmers information that is more detailed,
measurements that are more accurate and solutions that are more effective.
These can be achieved with a combination of information-gathering tools like sensors, satellites and drones, and advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI).
With massive amounts of data on the state of their farmland gathered, processed and analyzed in real time, farmers are able to give the best possible care to the crops that most need it at the most appropriate time and put their resources to the best use.
how to gather information:
the significance of accuracy and effectiveness
make the best/most of; make full use of
Para. 2:
What does the advent of modern technology offer to farmers
Para. 2:
What can farmer do with the massive amounts of data
Farmers are able to:
give the best possible care to the crops that most need in real time
put their resources to the best use
minimize potential threats to the environment by reducing unnecessary chemicals (an added bonus)
额外的好处/红利
an added bonus; an added value/advantage/benefit/difficulty
As an added bonus, the decline in the amount of unnecessary chemicals minimizes potential threats to the environment.
to reduce sth, especially sth bad, to the lowest possible level 使减少到最低限度
Good hygiene helps to minimize the risk of infection.
保持清洁有助于最大限度地减少感染的危险。
He always tried to minimize his own faults, while exaggerating those of others.
他总是试图对自己的错误轻描淡写,对别人的错误夸大其词。
to try to make sth seem less important than it really is 降低;贬低;使显得不重要
Para. 3:
What are the different application capabilities that precision farming has
How does the author explain the different application capabilities
What do you think the phrase “the big picture” in Line 26 refer to
1. The different application capabilities : monitoring, diagnosing, identifying and targeting.
2. By using the example Soil sampling:
field sensor
data library
check the soil’s moisture, nutrient levels etc.
the big picture of the soil is revealed
“The big picture” refers to all the detailed and accurate information about the soil, such as its nutrient levels, moisture, temperature, pH levels and water requirements. Based on all the information, farmers are able to make better decisions about farming.
Theme-Exploration:
Precision farming boasts a diverse range of application capabilities at different stages of food production—monitoring, diagnosing, identifying and targeting.
Field sensors check the soil’s moisture, nutrient levels and pH levels, enabling farmers to monitor their crops at any time, from anywhere.
monitoring
diagnosing
As the data library builds up, the big picture of the soil is revealed so that farmers are able to accurately assess the condition of the soil in real time, identify potential problems and work out solutions accordingly.

What are the benefits of the application of AI in farming machines
What idea does author want to support by using the example of cotton
Benefits:
AI does contribute to increased crop yields as well as simplified crop tracking, harvesting and processing
AI-controlled machines can plant and harvest more crops at faster speeds
computer vision can distinguish weeds from crops
Algorithms based on data gathered by sensors, drones and satellites can work out site-specific management of the crops
2. The example of cotton plants supports the idea that AI technology is efficient and accurate, and cotton requires delicate handling.
Cotton farmers use drones with AI technology to carry out specialized tasks.

Para. 5:
Why will the push for future developments in precision farming benefit all of us
Because precision farming will become more effective and have an even greater impact on how we grow our food.
Because it will contribute to a greener, healthier and better-fed planet.
Thanks to precision farming’s close relationship with technology, the farming industry’s capabilities can develop even further. Through the integration of 5G technology and the Internet of Things (IoT), as well as advances in deep-learning technologies, not only will larger amounts of data be available, but they will be processed more efficiently.

In recent years, the rapid growth in the urban population (1) _____________ a decline in agricultural land. How can we manage our urban environments to sustainably grow food One novel answer is vertical farming. Essentially, the idea is that city tower blocks can provide plenty of space for growing crops if they (2) _________________.

Revision
Vertical farming uses urban spaces for the highest possible crop yields. It promotes soil-free systems, which require no pesticides, so the farming method is eco-friendly. As an added (3) ______, farmers can grow crops all year round in this artificial farming environment without worrying about abnormal weather, which often leads to crop losses. (4) _____ for urban areas, vertical farming has taken off in many countries, where the view of buildings “growing” green leaves provides a refreshing contrast to a concrete jungle of offices and flats. For instance, Singapore, with a population of about six million and an area of only about 720 square kilometres, (5) _____ many vertical farming zones.

However, there are some obstacles to overcome if vertical farming is to have a greater impact. A major one is meeting the electricity demands of such projects. Vertical farms are highly controlled environments, which are monitored in (6) _______ and require large amounts of energy. Consequently, there has been the push for renewable energy sources, as they would not increase the high levels of pollution normally found in urban areas.
As the benefits of vertical farming appear to be (7) _________, it may enjoy greater popularity in countries where agricultural land is scarce. Hopefully, the (8) _________ of technology and innovation may be one way of overcoming the practical problems of crop farming.
