Where was that cashier(收银员) I quickly looked at my watch.I hardly had enough time to eat a
sandwich and rush back to work.
I looked around the nearly empty restaurant, but the cashier was nowhere in sight.A woman stood wiping(擦拭)the far end of the counter(柜台).She looked at me coldly with sad, dark eyes.
I waited, getting angry.I'd been standing there for at least three minutes!
Controlling my anger,I remembered Mom's words.“Whenever you find yourself in an unpleasant situation, just think about what is missing. If someone is unkind, then kindness is missing. If someone is hateful, then love is missing. It we will be what's missing, then we'll provide whatever the situation
needs.”
And here I was in an unpleasant situation. How should I“be what's missing” What was missing was service.Maybe I should just jump behind the counter and take my own order.
Just then the woman walked slowly toward me.“May I help you ”she asked, still coldly. She
looked so tired. No doubt, she was overworked.
I took a deep breath. With Mom's words ringing in my head,I gave the woman my order and
smiled.“How are you today ”
My question seemed to surprise her.She eyed me for a second before answering.“Not too good.”
“I'm sorry,”I said.“I hope it gets better starting right now.”
She almost smiled as she looked at me.“Thanks.I hope you're right.I should also say sorry to
you.I have worked a whole day without rest.”
I thought to myself as I ate my sandwich. We're all the same, really. We have problems and
angers. We get tired and we hurt.We need to be nicer to each other.
After eating,I wiped the table cleaner than usual, and put the tray(托盘)back nicely on the
stand. The woman was watching me,with a big smile on her face.
“Be what's missing.”It worked.

Dolphins are not fish. They are mammals(哺乳动物).They live in groups and speak to each other in their own language.Like many animals, they use their sounds to communicate with each other. However,a new study has found that mother dolphins use different sounds to communicate with their young. The use of the special sounds is similar to the way adult humans use so-called“baby talk”with
children.
The study has found that female bottlenose dolphins(宽吻海豚)change the tone(音调)and length of their whistles(口哨)when calling and communicating with their young.Male dolphins do not play a
big part in raising their young.
The so-called “whistle”is an important part of communication for dolphins. The researchers say changing the whistle tone allows female dolphins to signal their young. The signals are like humans
calling someone by name.
The team recorded whistles of 19 mother dolphins living in the Sarasota Bay area along the western coast of Florida, the US.Microphones were repeatedly put on the same wild mother dolphins for
recording.Normally, young dolphins stay with their mothers for about three years in this area.
The research was carried out over 30 years. Laela Sayigh, a co-writer of the study, said, “The
animals at times use these whistles to keep in touch with each other."
Scientists don't know exactly why people, dolphins and other creatures(生物)use"baby talk”to communicate with their young. But they believe it may help the young learn many important sounds.
9.What do female bottlenose dolphins do when calling and communicating with their young
A.They swim closer to their young.
B.They choose a quiet place and call their names.
C.They change the tone and length of their whistles.
D.They call their young together.
10.The underlined word“signal”in Paragraph 3 means“
A.take care of the young dolphins carefully B.feed the young dolphins properly
C.make the young dolphins live happily D.send out a message to the young dolphins
11.What do we know about the research team
A.They used microphones to record the whistles repeatedly.
B.They let the dolphins make whistles repeatedly for recording.
C.They followed the dolphins around to record their whistles.
D.They used airplanes to record the dolphins' whistles repeatedly.
12.What's the passage mainly about
A.Mother dolphins and their young ones.
B.Dolphins are mammals.
C.Mother dolphins' special signals for their children.
D.A special way to communicate—baby talk.

AI(Artificial Intelligence)and machine learning refer to the ability
of machines to learn and act intelligently. It means they can make
decisions, finish tasks, and even tell the possible future results based on
what they learn from the data(数据).
AI and machine learning already play a bigger role in everyday life
than you might imagine.Health care,banking,video games,every
search on the Internet you make...,all are driven by AI.
AI is going to change almost every field of modern life.A famous scientist once said,“Success in creating AI would be the biggest event in human history.”And he added at once,"Unluckily,it might
also be the last, unless we learn how to avoid the risks.”
As we know, there are possible huge risks for society and human life, especially when you consider some countries are racing to develop AI-enabled autonomous weapons(人工智能自主武器).It is also going to change and take the place of many human jobs. The same worries also come from the public.According to the survey conducted by Centre for the Governance of AI,91%of the people
(tend to and totally)agree that“AI is a technology that requires careful management”in Europe.
But rather than agreeing with an idea of a helpless future where all human jobs are given over to robots, some people believe AI will make our working lives better. It will improve the work of
humans, and new jobs will appear to take the place of the old ones.
What's more, machines become more intelligent and they are able to finish more human tasks.
Things, which only belong to humans like creativity and critical(批判性的)thought will become even more
valuable in the future.
Like it or not,AI is here.Maybe changing ourselves and managing it well are the best way out.
Just as Benjamin Franklin once said,“When you've finished changing, you're finished.”
13.◎2024省模新变化 What's the main idea of Paragraph 2

Students usually have to spend a lot of time learning knowledge, but the learning outcome cannot always meet what we expect. That is possibly because you don't have good learning-methods. Here
let's try Feynman's learning method.
As the name suggests,it was proposed by a Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman. It is an effective(有效的)way. 17.

Next, explain it to others. For example, suppose you are trying to explain the concept to a 5-year-

If you have trouble explaining it clearly, then come to the third step.19. Explain it to
the boy bit by bit in your own words until he completely understands it.
20. Try to teach it to more people and be ready to answer any of their questions.
Feynman thinks that understanding is more important than memorizing. His learning method
encourages students to think deeply and solve problems with their own understanding.
A.There are four main steps included. B.Finally, you should be able to answer questions about the concept. C.You use simple language in order to make him fully understand it. D.Review the material and divide it into smaller parts. E.Third, move to another concept and work harder on it.

Bert won a national prize called Young Heroes for his“green”project.
This public-spirited young person was a university student. His love for insects(昆虫)grew deeper
and he was protecting them for the future.
Bert found his love early in life. When he was around 4 or 5,he always loved to watch different insects, especially beautiful swallowtails(凤蝶).One interesting fact he learned about swallowtails was that their bright colors warned hungry animals that they tasted bad.And it was also fun to watch how they came into being. But the reason he really fell in love with them was that they were easy to get close to.For example,if you want to attract(吸引)swallowtails, you can plant some zinnias(百日草),
a kind of bright flowers.
Bert started a zinnia garden at his house, where he raised a large number of swallowtails over the years. With the world's swallowtail population falling,Bert wanted people to realize that if insects like swallowtails disappeared,so would all the others above them on the food chain(食物链). To stop
swallowtails from disappearing,he also created a zinnia garden at his junior high school.
Part of the joy for Bert was watching the younger students running after swallowtails. He said, “Whenever a swallowtail lands on them, the young students will soon fall in love with these cute
insects. They will have a new understanding of them.”
