Twenty-two years ago, I won a Nobel Prize, together with Tim and Leland Hartwell, for our work on how cells control their division.
The prize changed our lives. Suddenly you become a public figure being asked to do all sorts of things: to give lectures, quite often on topics you know little about; to sit on committees and reviews you are not always well qualified to be on; to visit countries you have barely heard of. It is like having a whole new extra job, with upwards of 500 requests a year.
A recent study suggests that in general the extra commitments that Nobel winners take on result in fewer papers after their awards. There may be some truth to this given the extra demands on one’s time, but of course prestigious awards also allow new projects and research to be undertaken.
What effects did the Nobel Prize have on my subsequent career and work It has certainly helped me to get scientific leadership positions. Within a year of getting the prize I was offered and accepted the presidency of Rockefeller University in New York. Having the prize also helps to get things done. For example, I have been involved in the merging of two separate cancer research charities to form Cancer Research UK. And it has helped me support causes I care deeply about. I became an ambassador for Ukraine education and science to help raise money for schools in that shattered country. Moreover, having a Nobel does help attract high-quality research colleagues. I have just started three excellent new PhD students. It is a privilege for me to be able to pursue curiosity-driven research at this late stage of my career.
However, one thing I am glad to say that the Nobel Prize did not influence was peer review from my fellow scientists, assessing the suitability of my own research for publication, and my grant applications for funding. My rejection rates have remained essentially the same before and after the prize. And that, of course, is exactly how it should be.
4. What is the author’s purpose in writing paragraph 2
A. To share his pride in winning a Nobel.
B. To express his regret at the changing of life.
C. To show his self confidence in handling the extra jobs.
D. To display his overburdened tasks after winning a Nobel.
5. What does the underlined word “merging” in paragraph 4 mean
A. Competition. B. Comparison. C. Combination. D. Construction.
6. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The special privileges the Nobel winner has.
B. The positive impacts the Nobel Prize generates.
C. The great contributions the Nobel winner makes.
D. The scientific leadership the Nobel Prize provides.
7. What message does the author mainly want to convey in the last paragraph
A. The spirit of science lies in seeking facts and truth.
B. Winning a Nobel Prize has an impact on peer review.
C. Extra commitments make Nobel winners less productive.
D. The approval a Nobel winner receives is equal to rejection.
【答案】4. D 5. C 6. B 7. A

Artificial intelligence (AI) is showing promise in earthquake prediction, challenging the long-held belief that it is impossible. Researchers at the University of Texas, Austin, have developed an AI algorithm(算法) that correctly predicted 70% of earthquakes a week in advance during a trial in China and provided accurate strength calculations for the predicted earthquakes.
The research team believes their method succeeded because they stuck with a relatively simple machine learning approach. The AI was provided with a set of statistical features based on the team’s knowledge of earthquake physics, and then instructed to train itself using a five-year database of earthquake recordings. Once trained, the AI provided its prediction by listening for signs of incoming earthquakes within the background rumblings(隆隆声) in the Earth.
This work is clearly a milestone in research for AI-driven earthquake prediction. “You don’t see earthquakes coming,” explains Alexandros Savvaidis, a senior research scientist who leads the Texas Seismological Network Program (TexNet). “It’s a matter of milliseconds, and the only thing you can control is how prepared you are. Even with the 70% accuracy, that’s a huge result and could help minimize economic and human losses and has the potential to remarkably improve earthquake preparation worldwide.”
While it is unknown whether the same approach will work at other locations, the researchers are confident that their AI algorithm could produce more accurate predictions if used in areas with reliable earthquake tracking networks. The next step is to test artificial intelligence in Texas, since UT’s Bureau TexNet hastions and over six years worth of continuous records, making it an ideal location 300 earthquake sta for these purposes.
Eventually, the authors hope to combine the system with physics-based models. This strategy could prove especially important where data is poor or lacking. “That may be a long way off, but many advances such as this one, taken together, are what moves science forward,” concludes Scott Tinker, the bureau’s director.
8. How does the AI forecast earthquakes
A. By identifying data from the satellites.
B. By analyzing background sounds in the Earth.
C. By modeling data based on earthquake recordings.
D. By monitoring changes in the Earth’s magnetic field.

When wind blows through a bigleaf maple (大叶枫), paper-thin, wing-like seeds called samaras gently spin towards the ground. The fruit’s tissue allows the wind to guide it further away from the tree. Inspired by the seeds, researchers designed a tiny, winged microchip, no larger than a grain of sand, that is powerful enough to monitor environmental pollution and airborne disease.
Called the microflier, the microchip has no motor to push it forward in the air but instead was designed to catch the wind. To perfect the microchip’s flying capability and shape, scientists took inspiration from the forms of various airborne seeds. The research team improved various designs until the microfliers flew slowly and more steadily than nature’s samara seeds. The slower falling rate allows the microchip to keep flying for longer, which gives it more time to collect data and monitor air pollutants and airborne diseases.
To perfect the microflier’s flight, researchers took inspiration from children’s pop-up books to create the three-dimensional wings. Usually, electronic microchips are flat, two-dimensional objects, but something flat won’t take flight. To make the 3-D shape, John A. Rogers and his team built a stretched rubber base that the microchip rests on. The wings pop into flight mode when the rubber base is relaxed.
The chip gathers data with sensors across its surface that can sense and monitor pH levels, test for heavy metals or chemicals, and track air pollution. An antenna (天线) on the microflier then sends all the collected data to a computer or phone. Rogers and his team are planning to test out the electronic chips soon by dropping thousands of the chips in a field. The microfliers will change color depending on the number of heavy metals present in the field where they land. A drone will then fly over the area and take photos of the microflier’s colors, allowing researchers to map out the pollutants.
Rogers and his team also designed the microchips to break down over time to prevent environmental pollution.
12. What is the winged microchip designed to do
A. Guide seeds from the tree. B. Prevent airborne diseases.
C. Keep track of air qualities. D. Catch the wind to fly away.
13. What do paragraph 2 and 3 focus on
A. Where researchers draw inspiration. B. How the microflier has improved.
C. What the microchip does for humans. D. Why the microflier flies more stably.
14. What do the researchers do with the microflier in the future
A. Drop chips in the field. B. Monitor the soil color.
C. Map out air pollutants. D. Handle soil pollution.
15. Which of the following would be a suitable title for the text
A. Winged microchips for monitoring environment
B. Microflier: A flying device of spreading seeds
C. Drone: A photographer of microflier’s colors
D. Electronic chips for finding airborne diseases

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As I was leaving my fitness class one evening, my instructor called across the parking lot to me. “Hey! Jane! It looks like your muffler (消音器) under your truck is hanging kind of low!”
Honestly speaking, I didn’t like my instructor. The black birthmark on his face made him a little ugly. I just nodded, waved and climbed into my truck. Yeah, whatever, I figured. You’re the instructor. Worry about keeping my weight low, not about my muffler being low.
Then I was driving home, singing along with the radio when suddenly I heard: CLUNK! THUD! SCRAPE-RATTLE-RATTLE! At first, I thought it was part of the song, but then I realized it was a sound I had never heard in this song.
I looked in my door mirror and saw sparks (火花) dancing along the road behind my truck. I pulled off to the side of the road to have a look.
The muffler was fine as far as I could tell. However, the metal bracket (托架) that apparently held the muffler up under the truck had broken loose, and the muffler was resting on the pavement. I wasn’t sure what had caused this to happen.
I decided the best idea was to pick up the muffler and hoped that, somehow, it would stick back on the underside of my truck. Let me tell you, it’s surprising how hot a muffler can get in just a short drive.
Still blowing on my painful fingertips, I called my father and told him what was happening to his truck. “Whatever you do, don’t touch the muffler,” he told me. “It will be very hot.”
“If you can wait, I will call the garage to repair but you have to wait for half an hour. But you can also manage it by yourself,” he said.
“I can have a try. I don’t want to wait,” I said.
“Then you can find some ropes, and then climb under the truck to temporarily reattach the muffler.”
I searched the truck but the only thing I found was a spare tire and a pair of shoes.
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Paragraph 1: “You can take down the loose bracket and place it under the muffler,” said my father.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2: The sudden voice frightened me and the bracket fell into two parts.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 “You can take down the loose bracket and place it under the muffler,” said my father. That was a good idea. In that way, the bracket can protect the muffler from being damaged by the road. Then I could drive to the garage or go home. So I took off my coat and hat excitedly. A few minutes later, I was lying on my back in the damp driveway looking up at the underside of my car. Slowly and carefully, I reached out to get the broken bracket. “Is that you Jane ”
The sudden voice frightened me and the bracket fell into two parts. I got annoyed but realized the voice was familiar. It was my instructor. I climbed out. Sure enough, the instructor was standing by my car. “What’s wrong ” he asked. I told him what had happened and showed him the broken bracket. He smiled and apologized to me. Then he took over the shoelace from my hand and climbed underneath my car to tie the muffler. Since then, I have changed my attitude towards others and never judged a person by their appearances.

C

With climate change continuing to worsen our situation is beginning to feel increasingly serious.____16____Is it right Maybe not.
Techno-optimism can be defined as a belief that future technologies will solve all of our current problems. This definition reinforces (强化) the idea that there’s no reason to panic or change our current energy-intensive (能源集中型) lifestyle. All society needs to do is look to green technology to work its magic. ____17____
One of the best examples of this optimistic misconception is the electric car. Despite being highly regarded as an eco-friendly way to get around, electric cars are not the end for the future of transport. Batteries in electric cars use chemical elements which we could be seeing a shortage of by mid-century.____18____Techno-optimism has led many to believe that if everyone just switched to driving electric vehicles, we would be making incredible steps towards sustainability. However, the reality is that the amount of resources and energy needed to produce enough electric vehicles for everyone is not even remotely sustainable.
____19____Investing in public transportation and moving away from individually owned vehicles. Producing fewer cars. Improving recycling practices of old batteries. The solutions we seek should not be rooted in new technology, but be about changing the way our society functions.
Techno-optimism puts too much emphasis on technology and not enough on what we can do right this minute. Unfortunately, people seem to like the picture that techno-optimism paints. ____20____Until we are ready to face the need for a less complex life, we cannot make true progress towards sustainability.
A. People used to fall into this trap.
B. So where should we look for answers instead
C. The modern world’s simple solution is technology.
D. Moreover, they are more energy-intensive to produce.
E. Unfortunately, this is an incredibly dangerous opinion to hold.
F. There is no doubt that we are heading towards a greener future.
G. Nevertheless, the truth is, we need a widespread change in our lifestyles.
