Passage 1
Cheng Feng is a teacher in a rural primary school.Yet, to many of her students, the 33-year-old is more than that.Cheng's care for her rural students has extended beyond the classroom and makes her a mother figure to them all.
During the just past summer vacation, Cheng didn't take time off but paid home visits to rural students of the Liling Primary School, which is nestled in the mountains more than 120 kilometers from the central area of Poyang County, East China's Jiangxi Province.
Most students have been left behind by their parents, who have to go to work far away from home, and they are looked after by their grandparents.
“Seeing these special families and special children, I realized the importance of rural education, and it is one of the major reasons why I have stuck around all these years, ” says Cheng, who also grew up in Poyang.
After learning that one of her students, Tan Yeting, and her brother were just scraping by on the low income of their grandparents' handmade broom business, Cheng would pay regular visits to Tan's home.
She would walk the two children through their homework assignment, enjoy beautiful rural scenery with them and cut their hair. These interactions have helped both children grow in confidence and shake of their timid nature at school.

Passage 2
I left university with a good degree in English Literature, but no sense of what I wanted to do.Over the next six years, I was treading water(停滞不前), just trying to earn an income.I tried journalism, but I didn't think I was any good, then finance, which I hated. Finally, I got a job as a rights assistant at a famous publisher.I loved working with books, although the job that I did was dull.
I had enough savings to take a year off work, and I decided to try to satisfy a deep-down wish to write a novel.Attending a Novel Writing MA course gave me the structure I needed to write my first 55,000 words.
It takes confidence to make a new start—there's a dark period in-between where you're neither one thing nor the other. You're out for dinner and people ask what you do, and you're too ashamed to say, “Well, I'm writing a novel, but I'm not quite sure if I'm going to get there.” My confidence dived.Believing my novel could not be published, I put it aside.
Then I met an agent(代理商) who said I should send my novel out to agents. So, I did and, to my surprise, got some wonderful feedback.I felt a little hope that I might actually become a published writer and, after signing with an agent, I finished the second half of the novel.
The next problem was finding a publisher. After two-and-a-half years of no income, just waiting and wondering, a publisher offered me a book deal—that publisher turned out to be the one I once worked for.
It feels like an unbelievable stroke of luck—of fate, really. When you set out to do something different, there's no end in sight, so to find myself in a position where I now have my own name on a contract(合同) of the publisher—to be a published writer—is unbelievably rewarding.

8.Which of the following words can best describe the author's experience as a writer?

C.Difficult but thrilling.
D.Complicated and fruitless.
Passage 3
Many diseases and medical conditions are caused by things out of our control.Yet experts say you can control and even prevent many of the risk factors that increase your chances of dying. So doctors urge us to eat healthy foods, get exercise, stop smoking and limit our alcohol intake. But there is something else you can do.And it is free and easy—smile!
Anand Chockalingam is a heart disease specialist at University of Missouri Health Care in Columbia, Missouri. He advises his patients to smile, “When we smile, the brain wiring gets influenced. The chemicals that are released are more positive.” He says smiling is a first step in fighting physical and emotional stress. This is not just New Age advice.Several studies are in favor of Dr.Chockaligam's prescription (处方) to smile more.
The main cause of heart attacks and strokes are blockages in blood vessels (血管).These prevent blood from flowing to the heart or the brain. The most common reason for these blockages is a build-up of fatty deposits on the inner walls of the arteries.
When you feel stressed or under pressure, your body releases many natural hormones (激素) including adrenaline and cortisol.Adrenaline increases your heart rate and blood pressure.Cortisol is the body's main stress hormone. It increases sugar in the bloodstream. If you are truly in danger, these hormones can help you. They are part of what we call our fight-or-flight response.
However, when stressed for a long period, these stress hormones are ever-present in our bodies. And that, medical researchers warn, may lead to health problems.
Dr.Chockalingam says a smile may be one way to help.He tells his patients to smile 20 times an hour.To some, that might seem like a lot of smiling.Or some might even feel foolish ...smiling for seemingly no reason. But a smile does not involve drugs or operations. It is free and it has no bad side effects.
“Once people smile, they are relaxing. This relaxation directly lowers blood pressure, and improves sugar levels in the blood. If we are smiling, we are breaking that link between stress and health,” and it just may provide a little extra protection to everyone's heart health.
9.What does the writer want to highlight in Paragraph 1?

Relative Delight
Maureen and her sister Doreen were finally reunited after 56 years. The two girls were separated at birth.Their mother gave them up for adoption and they both went to different families.Years later, and without realizing that they were related, both Maureen and Doreen became friends. They eventually found out their secret after Maureen decided to trace her biological mother.Official papers from the adoption agency proved that the two women were in fact sisters.

Passage 5
I'm in the area of Noailles in Marseille, France's second largest city and its main trade seaport. Some small shops sell vegetables, meat, and, it seems, all the spices of the Middle East.In addition to French, languages spoken on the busy streets include Arabic and African French. It all adds up to one of the most ethnically diverse cities in Europe.
Close to the downtown street, I discover an Algerian restaurant, whose owner makes his signature dish—couscous with barley, not the usual wheat, using a recipe that hasn't changed since the 1920s.Couscous is an necessary part of Marseille culture. The dish was added to the UNESCO's Lists of Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2020.
To be honest, before I travelled here, couscous had not been the first meal that came to mind when I thought of Marseille. It was bouillabaisse, the rich soup with olive oil, garlic and saffron.I imagined enjoying it at a small portside cafe. This was clearly a romantic fantasy. For one thing, there are no small cafes at historic city. For another, the restaurants do serve bouillabaisse, but when I see the price at one place I am shocked: 69 euros! No bowl of soup should cost that much.
I give up and end up two streets away from the old harbor in a new restaurant, Ourea. For 28 euros, Chef Matthieu Roche serves a three-course lunch that includes tuna steaks and couscous.
More and more young, talented people are discovering that Marseille is an ideal place to live. There is also a growing number of Parisians moving here every year.Tired of the rush and expense of life in larger cities, the newcomers come looking for the more relaxing Mediterranean way of life.
Walking through these contrasting neighborhoods of Marseille, I think about the distinct communities here living in the same neighborhoods—together, side by side, but not mixed. They may also feel they are Marseillais first regardless of nationalities.
16.Which word can best describe Marseille according to the first paragraph?
A.Remote. B.Commercial.

B.To experience a dish.
C.To learn a language.
D.To live a leisurely life.
19.In which column of a magazine can we probably read the text?
A.Fashion. B.Food.
C.Trade. D.Travel.
Passage 6
I have always had pets.My first animal friends were guinea pigs. And then I tried my best to persuade my parents to get a dog.For some reason they did not seem to believe I would walk the dog three times a day, no matter how hard I tried.
Then my mother said a friend's cat had had kittens and we could go and get one.At first I was disappointed, but with time I learned to love our cat so much I have had cats ever since.
I just have to remember to bolt everything into place. If I don't, things fly (they seem to get airborne when cats are around—the more expensive an object is, the more it seems to enjoy flying).
Also, watering plants is no problem.During the years all the plants have disappeared except the cactuses(仙人掌).They don't seem to interest cats much.Nor do they need much water. It would be nice to get flowers, but I do advise against anyone bringing them to me.No matter what flower—it is considered a kitty snack.
Changing furniture is nice too.Cats help in letting us know when it is time to change the sofa.Either when the fabric starts to look like Einstein's hair that has been combed with cats' paws(爪子), or when no amount of vacuuming(用吸尘器打扫) helps in revealing the original color of the couch, thanks to the generous donation of cat hair.A soft sofa is nice, sure, but it sort of gets a bit embarrassing when all our guests leave the house with fur-trousers.
I could go on and on to tell you more interesting stories between us next time!
20.Why did the author's parents turn him down when he wanted to have a dog?
A.They didn't favour dogs.

Students at Summit Elementary School in Butler,Pennsylvania are growing more than their minds.Under the guidance of their teacher Angela Eyth, they’ve created a productive garden.“The kids are in charge of everything,” Eyth says.
Eyth and her students launched the gardening project in 2020 after the teacher attended a conference on how to include lessons about farming in the classroom. Then came the garden. With 16 acres of school district-owned land around their building, there was plenty of room.
The project is now two years old,and goes beyond planting and growing:Eyth and her fellow educators structure lessons in science, math and more around their garden.
“When we grew cabbages my students noticed something was eating the leaves,” Eyth recalls.“This led to an investigation on figuring out what was eating it and how to stop it:the kids analyzed the evidence they found and acted as engineers in creating ways to keep insects out of the cabbage beds.In the 4th grade,we let the students outside to estimate the number of bean pods (豆荚) they find.” Eyth continues,“People think gardening should be separate from core subjects but it’s far from the truth. The kids’ curiosity keeps it rolling.”
The kids also keep the produce rolling—So much so that with a $70,000 donation from Remake Learning/Grable Foundation, they’re using that money to build a greenhouse at their school. The funds help them launch an outdoor classroom and open a farm standing at Broad Street that brings fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs and more to an area of their community where affordable fresh produce is hard to find there.Such areas are often called“food deserts.”
“Our students discover the value of sharing their harvest with the community surrounding nearby Broad Street Elementary School,” says Eyth.“They’re so proud of what we’re doing here.”

D.It needs more donations.
Passage 9
Childhood obesity(肥胖) isn’t only caused by over eating.A lot of environmental and lifestyle variables—such as skipping breakfast, irregular sleeping patterns and less sleep time—also contribute towards this disturbing trend, says a new study.
According to the study conducted by University College London’s researchers, children who skip breakfast and sleep less are more likely to have bigger appetites and tend to consume more energy-rich foods throughout the day, leading to excessive weight gain. The team also found that smoking habit of mothers during pregnancy(怀孕) is also one of the contributory factors for a child being overweight.
Interestingly, these results challenge the conventional belief that over-eating is the main cause of increasing obesity rates among children. In addition, factors like watching too much television, consuming sugary drinks, eating fruits and introducing solid food sooner don’t certainly lead to childhood obesity.
The researchers used data from a multi-disciplinary research project that tracks the lives of children from 19,244 families across the UK,born from September 2020 to January,2021.After analyzing the data, they found that in the UK,83.3% of new babies had non-overweight and stable BMI(身体质量指数).Only 1% had a mildly increasing BMI,while another 2.5% tended to have a sharply increasing BMI.However, due to poor lifestyle choices and environmental factors,6% of the children were already overweight when they were three years old.
The study authors concluded that modifying(更改) a child’s environment early in life can go a long way in reducing their chances of gaining abnormal weight, which can also affect their health in later years.
The researchers recommended that dealing with the childhood obesity calls for a mixture of preventive actions, for example, creating awareness among the families around the benefits of a healthy lifestyle and also instructing and supporting parents throughout the pregnancy, and even before and after it.
31.What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A.The effect of childhood obesity.
B.The irregular lifestyle of children.
C.The new trend of social development.
D.The causes of children being overweight.
32.What do people usually think leads to childhood obesity
A.Sleeping less and skipping breakfast.
B.Watching too much TV and playing games.
C.Smoking and introducing solid food sooner.
D.Consuming too much food and sugary drinks.
33.What can we know from the data of the research in the UK
A.The obesity rates among children were not high.
B.Most of the children didn’t get energy-rich foods.
C.The irregular lifestyle had little effect on children.
D.The study result was beyond researchers’ expectation.
34.What suggestion do the researchers offer parents
A.Improving the living environment.
B.Protecting children from any harm.
