A store owner was putting a sign up his door that reads “Puppies For Sale”. Signs like that have a way of appealing to small children, and sure enough, a little boy appeared under the store owner’s sign. “How much are you going to sell the puppies for ” he asked. The store owner replied, “Anywhere from $30 to $50.”
The little boy reached in his pocket and pulled out some change. “I have $2.37,” he said. “Can I please look at them ” The store owner smiled and whistled and out came a lady followed by five teeny tiny balls of fur. One puppy was lagging (落后) considerably behind. Immediately the little boy picked out the lagging limping ( 跛行) puppy and said, “What’s wrong with that little dog ”
The store owner explained that the vet had examined the little puppy and had discovered it would always limp. The little boy became excited, “That’s the little puppy that I want to buy.” The store owner said, “No, you don’t want to buy that little dog. If you really want him, I’ll just give him to you.” The little boy looked straight into the store owner’s eyes, pointing his finger and said offensively, “I don’t want you to give him to me. That little dog is worth every bit as much as all the other dogs and I’ll pay full price. In fact I’ll give you $2.37 now, and 50 cents a month until I have him paid for."
The store owner said, “You really don’t want to buy this little dog. He is never going to be able to jump and play with you like the other puppies.”
The little boy reached down and rolled up his pant leg to reveal a badly twisted, crippled left leg supported by a big metal brace (支撑物). He looked up at the store owner and softly replied,

Most of us want to get in shape and be healthy. For many of us nutrition (营养) and watching what we eat is an important way to stay healthy. But when it comes to food, what is calorie counting, and what are the positives and negatives of it
A law in the UK came into force in April 2022 that requires restaurants, takeaways, and cafes to display the calorie information of non-pre-packed food and soft drinks on their menus. It’s a strategy aimed to deal with obesity and give people a more informed choice of what goes down into their stomachs. Being able to count calories and know how much we can eat is a great way to try and stay on track with our diet.
However, there are some disbelievers when it comes to calorie counting 200 calories of fresh fruit and 200 calories of junk food, for example cookies, have the same caloric value. However, there is a question of the health benefits of what you’re eating, regardless of calories. While fresh fruit like apples contains things like vitamin C, junk food could contain an unhealthy level of sugar and fats. Likewise (同样地), fruit may fill you up and leave you not wanting more food for longer than a biscuit with equal calories —meaning, overall, you eat less.
Simply counting calories, while useful for weight loss, doesn’t take into account your intake of good fats, carbohydrates, and proteins—things that your body needs. So, if you’re trying to stick to a low-carbon diet, just looking at numbers of calories on a menu won’t be that useful. So, always be mindful that what you’re eating is part of a healthy balanced diet.
8. What does the underlined word “obesity” in Paragraph 2mean
A. being healthy. B. being strong. C. being fat. D. being sleepy.
9. What opinion do disbelievers hold
A. Calorie alone doesn’t contribute to health. B. Junk food has more calories than fresh fruit.
C. Less calories mean less food in your stomach. D. Sugar and fats are more harmful than calories.
10. What’s the text mainly about
A. The best way to keep in shape. B. A research result of obesity in the UK.
C. Nutrition and its health benefit. D. Opinions and comments on calorie counting.
11. From which section of a magazine is this text most likely taken
A. Entertainment. B. Lifestyle. C. Finance. D. Education.
D
Which is better for Earth: an electric or gas-powered vehicle The answer to this question might seem blindingly obvious. Of course electric cars must be better for the environment, because they don’t give off greenhouse gases as people drive. However, electric vehicles (EVs) aren’t perfect, and they come with their own set of polluting problems. Their batteries require a large amount of energy to produce.
Battery production is just one part of an electric car’s life span. A study looked at the entire life cycle of an EV’s emissions(排放),from mining the metals for the batteries to producing the electricity needed to power them, and then compared this with the average emissions of a gas-powered vehicle. The team found that when EVs are charged with coal-powered electricity, they’re actually worse for the environment than gas-powered cars.
“Only when connected to the clean energy do EVs have an advantage over the gas-powered cars on a greenhouse gas basis,” said Colin Sheppard, an expert in energy and transportation systems. That’s why more and more countries are decreasing the power supply from coal. In China, the national grid is improving with more efforts in renewable energy. For example, it has twice as much wind energy capacity as the U.S. and it builds more solar panels per year than any other countries.
Sheppard has modelled a future in which all cars are electric. “We want to understand what it might be like if all passenger vehicles were electrified.” The model suggests that if all vehicles in the U.S. were electric, greenhouse-gas emissions would be 46% less every year. This reduction could be increased even further if those vehicles were using a technique known as “smart charging” in which cars are recharged at chosen times (often at night) to reduce the cost of electricity.
In short, it’s far easier to argue for buying an EV than a gas-powered vehicle. But what about the cost Aren’t electric vehicles too expensive for most people
12. In which case do EVs get more heavy-polluted than gas-powered cars
A. Being powered only by batteries.
B. Using coal-powered electricity.
C. Starting to give off greenhouse gases.
D. Replacing gas-powered vehicles entirely.
13. How does Sheppard’s model show the reduction of greenhouse-gas emissions
A. With a discussion. B. With an examination.
C. With a comparison. D. With a questionnaire.
14. What can be inferred from the text
A. China is making advances in renewable energy.
B. Compared with gas-powered cars, EVs are at an advantage.
C. There is still room for the development of EVs.
D. It’s not a challenge to choose between EVs and gas-powered cars.
15. What might the paragraph following the passage be about
A. Inventing green gas-powered vehicles.
B. Developing environment-friendly grids.
C. Getting rid of fossil energy like coal and oil.
D. Making electric vehicles more affordable.

B. Lifestyle. C. Finance. D. Education.

【10题详解】
主旨大意题。根据文章第一段“But when it comes to food, what is calorie counting, and what are the positives and negatives of it (但是说到食物,什么是卡路里计算,它的优点和缺点是什么)”及最后一段“Simply counting calories, while useful for weight loss, doesn’t take into account your intake of good fats, carbohydrates, and proteins—things that your body needs. So, if you’re trying to stick to a low-carbon diet, just looking at numbers of calories on a menu won’t be that useful. So, always be mindful that what you’re eating is part of a healthy balanced diet.(简单地计算卡路里,虽然对减肥有用,但没有考虑到你摄入的有益脂肪、碳水化合物和蛋白质——这些是你身体需要的。所以,如果你想坚持低碳饮食,只看菜单上的卡路里数是没有用的。所以,总是要注意你所吃的是健康均衡饮食的一部分)”可知,这篇文章讲的是卡路里计算的必要性和它的不足之处,从而让读者知道该不该计算卡路里,即,关于卡路里计算的意见和评论。故选D。

【答案】12. B 13. C 14. C 15. D

When invited to a Chinese friend’s home, you should arrive a little earlier so that you can help the family prepare the dinner.
