Travelling to a foreign country can make you frightened if you don't know the local language. Mr. Thibault has a number of tips to help travelers manage in a destination when they don't speak the native tongue, based on his own experience. Here are a few of them.
Download a Language Translation App
Mr. Thibault tends to rely on Google Translate and suggests that travelers find an app that works for them. Ideally, find one that specializes in the language you need to translate especially if the language uses a character set you're not familiar with , or have difficulty pronouncing.
Speak with Your Hands and Head
Pointing with your hands and nodding or shaking your head, Mr. Thibault said, are easy ways to communicate with locals in the country you're in. "Gestures are all universally understood," he said.
Learn a Few Key Words
Knowing basic words and phrases like "hello", "thank you" and "I'm sorry, I don't speak your language. Do you speak English " is a must, Mr. Thibault said. Showing that you care enough to learn some of the language before you go, and at least enough to acknowledge that you don't know more, is a form of respect and will make you go a long way to be liked by locals.
Work with a Local Travel Agent
If you feel particularly uncomfortable in the country you're heading to, and you have to go anyway, relying on a local travel agent who knows both your and your destination's languages can be incredibly useful.
Hire a Local Tour Guide
A tour guide can help you get a better grasp of the local language and is a good person to practice words and phrases with. Whenever Mr. Thibault visit s a new country, he books a sightseeing tour with a guide on the first day of his trip. "I use this day to learn about my destination and get familiar with the language," he said.
1. In what situation should a language translation app be applied while travelling abroad

D. When you feel uncomfortable in the country.

Kristin Schell is the founder of The Turquoise Table, a movement of ordinary people who want to create community right in their own front yards. Ten years ago, she and her family moved to a new home in Austin, Texas.
One day, Kristin tried to connect with her new neighbors by hosting a party. She bought a few picnic tables but the delivery driver set one table down in her front yard by mistake. "After the party, I painted the table turquoise —my favorite color —and put it in the front yard, just a few feet from the sidewalk," she says.
That turquoise table became the place where Kristin and her kids hung out. They played games, did crafts and ate snacks. "We got intentional about where we spent our time," Kristin says. "We became 'front yard people'."
Neighbors began to stop by to introduce themselves and sit down for a chat. Kristin invited people to join her at the table for coffee or iced tea. Then neighbors asked Kristin if their family could put a picnic table in their front yard too. A movement was born. "It was a simple way to slow down and connect with others," she says. The turquoise table was inviting and had a shared feel.
People often hesitate to invite others into their homes. They think their house is too messy, it's not big enough or they don't have enough time. "Our perfectionism can cause us to miss out on the joy of connecting with others," Kristin says. Her picnic table takes away the excuses — and the pressure.
She likes how it enables her to take a small step towards easing loneliness and building relationships in her community. "People's greatest need is to know that they are loved and that they belong," she says.
A decade after their Texas beginnings, thousands of Turquoise Table s exist in all 50 states and in 13 countries around the world. Not all of them are actually turquoise. "No matter what color it is, it's a friendship table," Kristin says.

Blind people have long desired for brightness, but scientists don't have the technology. To bring that one step closer to reality, Zhiyong Fan, a material scientist of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, developed a new artificial eye recently. The device, which is about as sensitive to light and has sharper vision and a faster reaction time than a real eyeball, may outperform human eyes.
The human eye owes its wide field of view and clear eyesight to the retina(视网膜) — an area at the back of the eyeball covered in light-detecting cells. The design for a new artificial eye is based on the structure of the human eye and uses a friendly light-sensitive material. At the back of the eyeball, an artificial retina is lined with Nan scale light sensors(纳米级光感器). Those sensors measure light that passes through the lens(晶状体) at the front of the eye. Wires attached to the back of the retina send signals from those sensors to the processor, similar to the way nerve networks connect the eyeball to the brain.
"In the future, we can use this to replace damaged human eyes," says the lead designer. In theory, this artificial eye could see more clearly than the human eye, because the artificial retina contains about 460 million light sensors per square centimeter while a real retina has about 10 million light-detecting cells per square centimeter. Besides, the artificial eye ball records changes in lighting faster than human eyes can —within about 30 to 40 milliseconds, rather than 40 to 150 milliseconds. Although its 100-degree field of view isn't as broad as the 150 degrees a human eye can take in, the device can see as well as the human eye in poor light.
Hongrui Jiang, an electrical engineer at the University of Wisconsin, though , thinks engineers need a much more practical and efficient way to produce vast series of tiny wires on the back of the artificial eyeball to give it superhuman sight, which is super hard to achieve.
8. Why does Zhiyong Fan develop the artificial eye
A. To replace people's real eyeballs. B. To gain a sharper vision.
C. To help the blind regain their eyesight. D. To help normal eyes perform better.
9. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The design of the artificial eye. B. The structure of the human eye.
C. The advantages of the artificial eye. D. The material used for the artificial eye.
10. What can we learn about the artificial eye and the human eye
A. They have the same structure.
B. The artificial eye may see more clearly.
C. The human eye sees better in weak light.
D. The artificial eye takes in a broader view.
11. Which word best describes Hongrui Jiang's attitude towards the artificial eye
A. Doubtful. B. Favorable. C. Tolerant. D. Ambiguous.

It's been nearly two decades since the traditional clothing style Hanfu first started to reemerge in China. Since then it has gone from a small cultural movement celebrating an ancient fashion to a trend that is booming on social media, having been adopted by China's Generation Z as a means of connecting with their past. Instead of following other cultures blindly, Generation Z now have different opinions about what trend is by promoting local culture while having an objective view of exotic cultural products.
The new tastes of Generation Z — young people born after 1995— are well represented on Bilibili. In the recent New Year's Eve gala presented by Bilibili, it attracted more than 100 million views within 48 hours with a colorful set of programmes ranging from Peking Opera to classical Chinese cartoons. The same is also true of movie industry. Last year, for the first time, the top 10 most viewed films in China were all domestic films, while the ticket sales for imported films have dropped to only 16.28 percent.
"Generation Z grew up with the rapid development of China and under good economic conditions. With the development of the Chinese Internet industry, they have more access to diverse international information and cultures, which brings them a much broader vision and makes them more open and confident in analyzing foreign culture. Apart from taking pride in China's rapid development, this generation also pursues individuality and values devotion to the country," Professor Zhang Yiwu said.
He also noted that the popular rock and punk culture pursued by the 70s and 80s generations is more of a challenge against real life and local culture. Some people who were born in the 1970s and 1980s did not grow up in the Internet age —they experienced the transformation of China going from poor to rich first-hand. This kind of longing and admiration of the West came from a lack of confidence.
However, Generation Z now have the confidence to look at Western culture with equal status. This kind of cultural confidence will result in China being more active and creative in its development on the international stage in the future.
12. What does the underlined word "exotic" in paragraph 1 mean
A. Foreign. B. Fashionable. C. Traditional. D. Elegant.
13. Why is Bilibili mentioned in paragraph 2
A. To confirm the rise of new media.
B. To promote Chinese Internet industry.
C. To highlight the popularity of domestic art.
D. To show the popularity of New Year's Eve gala.
14. What do we know about Generation Z from the text
A. They have a stronger cultural identity.
B. They are longing for cultural diversity.
C. They have made China develop rapidly.
D. They are more fond of foreign culture.
15. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Confident China, Better Future
B. China's Progress Results in Cultural Confidence
C. China's New Generation Redefine Local Culture as Trendy
D. Hanfu Style, Connector of Ancient Fashion and Modern Trend

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Three Ways to Tackle Anxiety
Everyone feels anxious at times. Anxiety can surface when you face a challenge or have something to worry about. It turns on your body's stress response. This instant rise of stress hormones (荷尔蒙) is a survival response. It prepares you to react quickly and protect yourself. If you're scared or feel unsafe, anxiety causes you to be careful. 16 Here are three things that can help:
Start with a "growth" mindset(思维模式). Some people have a fixed mindset. They think, "I'm too anxious to speak in class. So I don't raise my hand." They don't think things can change. 17 People with a growth mindset know this. They know they can get better with effort and practice.
Breathe. When you feel anxious, take a few slow breaths. Slow breaths can slow the release of stress hormones. 18 As you guide your attention to your breath, you can pay less attention to anxious thoughts and feelings. Breathing like this can help you feel steady and less anxious.
19 Don't wait for anxiety to go away. You might think that you'll put off speaking in class or talking to that new person until you no longer feel anxious about it. But it doesn't work that way. It's facing the anxiety that helps you lower it.
Learning to tackle anxiety takes time, patience, and practice. Being willing to face situations that cause anxiety really helps. Start with one small step. 20
A. Talk to others.
B. Face the situation.
C. It's best to learn how to deal with it.
D. They can be uncomfortable but they aren't harmful.
E. They can help your body and mind feel more at ease.
F. The more you practice, the better you'll get at lowering anxiety.
G. But brain science shows that you can teach your brain new ways to respond.

Jenny lived in a small village. When she was a child, what she liked to do most was watch the blue sky and enjoy birds flying freely in the sky. She always imagined that some day she could also fly in the sky like a bird.
When Jenny was in the fourth grade, one day, her teacher asked them to write a report on what they wanted to be when they grew up. She poured her heart into her report and wrote that she dreamed to become an airline pilot in the future. She thought that she did a great job because she expressed her real idea successfully. However, to her surprise, her paper came back with an "F" on it. The teacher told her it was nothing but a "fairy tale", which could never become true. Jenny felt completely disappointed and sad. In her heart, she didn't want to accept that a girl couldn't become a pilot. But as the years went by, Jenny was beaten down by the discouragement again and again from people around her. "Girls can't become airline pilots; never have, never will. You're crazy." Finally, Jenny gave up her dream.
However, when Jenny studied in her senior year of high school, she met an English teacher called Marsha, who was a strict teacher with high standards but very kind. She often inspired her students to do something meaningful in the future. One day, Mrs. Marsha asked all the students to think about the question: "What will you do in the future " At that time, Jenny hesitated for a while. She was worried that she would be laughed at again. But soon she felt a rush of the old enthusiasm, and with excitement she wrote down the very old dream of becoming a pilot right away. 注意:

2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。

第二节
One possible version:
The next day, Marsha came into the classroom with a bright smile on her face. She praised all the students for what they had finished including Jenny. Mrs. Marsha told Jenny that her dream was wonderful and she was sure that
Jenny would have the abilities and talents to make it come true if she tried her best. Besides, she also encouraged Jenny to keep on trying without worrying about others' opinions. Hearing the words, Jenny felt a relief from her heart and made up her mind to study hard to realize her dream.
The hurt and fear of years of discouragement disappeared. Encouraged and full of passion, Jenny began to pursue her dream with all her effort. In the following ten years, she studied hard and never gave up even when she was faced with all kinds of difficulties. Eventually , Jenny became a pilot of a famous airline company, realizing her dream of flying in the sky like a bird. All of us may meet different difficulties on our way to success, but if we keep on trying without giving up, we will make it come true.
