Passage 1
Ezri and Oliver were so keen to climb the mountain that they begged to join their dad Brandon for another hike.Just after 8 a.m.on a beautiful Sunday morning, they set off.Brandon's backpack held his phone, Clif bars (能量棒), packets of apple sauce, apples, water bottles and fishing gear.
Brandon had planned a varied route up the mountain. The winding upward slope was fun and uneventful.Near the top, thick snow blanketed the path.Excitedly, the kids raced across the hard surface. They shared the second-last Clif bar and rested for an hour.Brandon looked around. His phone showed 1?30 p.m.and no signals.
When the kids started down, Brandon said, “You guys really want to find those fishing lakes, don't you?”
“Oh, yes!” Ezri said.So they took an unfamiliar route down the other side of the mountain.
By the time Brandon realized the path had become an animal trail alongside a stream, it made sense to keep following it.The stream sang to them, and they kept following it down.Mid afternoon, when the sun disappeared behind heavy gray clouds, they suddenly felt lost, cold and hungry. For half an hour they cautiously moved downward until they reached a steep cliff (悬崖) edge. The stream became a noisy, six-metre waterfall.Mist enveloped them as the water raced over a huge rock.
Brandon cursed (咒骂) himself for taking an unknown route down. They held hands and inched down until Oliver slid on a loose rock and all three went flying.
Brandon wiped blood from his forehead and gathered his senses. Was anyone hurt Oliver, crying and shivering, seemed okay.Ezri was weeping, but she too appeared uninjured.Brandon himself didn't feel anything worse than the wound on his forehead. The backpack was stuck in the rocks six meters away.He saw no use trying to find it back. The air was cold and getting colder. They were wet and tired.

Passage 2
As a teenager, I couldn't stand seeing a photo of my nose in profile.I hated how big it was and, if people praised me for my looks, I always felt it was in spite of the most noticeable feature on my face.
I was about to accept that I would never fully see my nose as beautiful when I met Nicholas Baldion, an artist, in a London pub, and asked him to paint my portrait.I regretted this the second I arrived for my sitting.I had forgotten that Baldion would have to spend hours staring at my biggest insecurity, and then painstakingly translating it onto canvas.
The first sitting was hard.I could not shake the feeling of wanting to turn my head to face the front.I hated the fact that Baldion was openly and carefully examining the one feature I had spent years trying to hide.Yet, as the two-and-a-half-hour sitting went on, I calmed down and began to accept my feelings.I had put myself in this situation, so now I just needed to sit in it.By the second sitting, I was almost excited—not just by the thought of having an afternoon when I had an excuse to do absolutely nothing, but because it had finally sunk in that I was having my portrait done.

Passage 3
Middle school is a rough period of life for many of us.And it can feel like the end of the world if you're the target of school's mean girls.
Jennifer knew this feeling all too well. When she was in middle school, she was often teased by other kids. Her classmates made fun of her social awkwardness and unfashionable clothes. Then the bullying escalated (升级) to a whole new level in seventh grade when three girls started targeting Jennifer almost every day.
“They would wait for me in the hallway at the end of class so that they could start picking on (欺负) me right away,” Jennifer said.“And they would corner me in this area of the school called ‘the draw off’ where they would kind of form a ring around me and insult me.”
Jennifer didn't know what to do to defend herself. So, she'd just repeat back what the girls said to her.
The rest of the school year went on like this.Jennifer's grades suffered.During the summer between seventh and eighth grade, the ringleader of the group that had targeted her transferred to another school.“I did hold out some hope that this might mean that eighth grade could be different,” Jennifer said.
That hope lasted just a few days into the new school year when Jennifer discovered that the group had a new ringleader—Anna, who had just moved to Jennifer's school. The bullying quickly resumed (重新开始), and it seemed like eighth grade would be much like seventh.
But about six weeks into the school year, something happened.Jennifer was in the locker room, and she was by herself because she had waited for everyone else to leave so she could change in private.Just then, she heard a voice. It was Anna.

Passage 4
Almost every childhood memory I have is centred on food.Telling stories around a crowded table at holiday dinners, the smell of roasting vegetables, the sensation (感受) of heat coming from the kitchen, all picture a familiar feeling of love and comfort.
My favourite memory of all is of my grandparents making and baking bread together. To this day, I have never tasted bread that is as delicious as theirs. No other loaf has ever been made with that kind of powerful, unconditional love.
When our son Brian, one of seventh graders, began to refuse usual communication with me, I felt desperate. How I missed those lovely old days when he couldn't wait to tell me his stories in kindergarten the moment I arrived home without getting changed! And there were also times when he brought loads of storybooks to me and demanded to be told all the stories before going to bed.But I didn't know since when everything changed. There was hardly any sharing about his daily school life with friends or any trouble about his schoolwork. Most of the time, his bedroom door was closed. The cold silence between us seemed to warn me that love between us began to fade.
At that time, like most mothers, I couldn't focus on work and couldn't sleep well. Why did things go off track so much Was it because my work took away most of my energy that family love was taken for granted Was it because my only precious spare time went too much to my two-year-old baby daughter that Brian's need for my company was ignored The more I reflected, the more I felt myself to blame and it was my responsibility to find a way out.
One day, as my eyes landed onto the bread on the kitchen table, I was reminded of those sweet childhood memories, “Could food help us make a change?” I wondered.

That day when Dora returned home, she told her mother about Alice's bird. Then she asked, “Mom, can I also get a bird?” “Of course, you can,” said her mother.“But you need to wait because I've no time to visit a pet store these days.” Dora agreed. One day, when Dora was back home from school, she saw a cage in the living room.In the cage was a beautiful blue bird. Her mother was standing next to the cage, smiling.“Oh, a bird!” Dora shouted happily. She ran to it and looked at it happily.“It's a birthday gift for you,” said her mother.“Thank you, Mom.I love it so much!” said Dora excitedly.
The following day, Dora invited her friends to come over to see her bird. All of her friends said it was a really beautiful bird and Dora was very glad to hear that. She and her friends played with the bird for a long time that day.Her friends all wished they could have such a bird as their pet.
Sadly, a few weeks later Dora became sick. The doctor told her parents that she got the flu and had to stay at home.In order not to make her friends sick, her parents asked her friends not to come to play with her.Dora felt very sad.How she wished her friends would come and visit her! But she knew her parents were right. She'd better stay alone.Since Dora had no one to play with, she could only play with her bird. However, she felt that her bird didn't seem to be happy either.

Passage 6
I feared going into my room after school.Every day it was something different. The hours away at school were long enough to cause a terrible change to my private room.Today can be no different.
As I entered the house, Mom greeted me with a smile. It seemed like nothing was wrong.Still, I wouldn't believe.Yesterday, I discovered a chocolate cookie spread around the mouth of my angel statue. Its pink lips were covered in chocolate.Obviously, Callie had shared her cookie with my angel.
I looked around for my little sister, Callie, who had just turned three.I didn't see her.As I checked the sitting room, I noticed it was pretty messy. There were toys all around. There were a few headless dolls, some blocks, the remains of a grape stuck into the carpet.I searched around and there she was, sitting on the sofa with the TV remote in her sticky hands. She looked up and saw me.A huge smile broke out on her face, and she laughed, clapping her hands.I was surprised that they didn't stick together.
“Sissy (sister)!” She jumped off the sofa and ran to me, hugging my knees and almost tipping me over.“Hi, Callie,” I said, with the slightest smile.I ruffled (抚弄) her long thick hair, and some white crumbs (残渣) fell to the carpet.“Cheese, sissy”, Callie said, pointing at the crumbs that had settled onto the carpet.I found a strong smell of cheese from them.Had Callie focused on destroying only the sitting room A voice raced across my mind.No way.Not my sister, the destroyer. Not my sister, the three-year-old terror.I turned around and started the scared climb to my room.

Ten minutes later, Kim sat down on the scooter to catch her breath, That was when a bearded man with a head of messy hair appeared. The kids didn't see where he came from, but they saw exactly what happened next: Without saying a word, the man picked Kim up off the scooter and calmly stepped away.
The guy held Kim gently like a baby and just walked down the street In fact, the calm way the man behaved led TJ to believe that he must be a relative of Kim's. But something wasn't right.“I could see Kim's face," TJ said.“She was scared.
As the man walked on, Kim's fear transformed into weeps, and then she cried for help. She began kicking and moving, trying to get free of the man's control.“What are you doing " Julie shouted. But the man, undisturbed, just walked the length of the block until he reached an alley(小巷) and disappeared.
TJ was frightened, yet he never thought about the danger to himself. The only thing he wanted to do was to get Kim back. But what was a 4-foot-tall kid going to do to stop a grown man “I wanted to help_but I couldn't do it myself," he thought to himself. “Tell Kim's parents, Julie!” He shouted as he started running towards the alley.
Kim's parents were relaxing on the sofa in their living room when their front door burst open.
Paragraph 1:“A bad guy just picked Kim up and took her away!”yelled Julie.

The father asked his son, “What is this ” The son replied, “It is a crow.”
After a few minutes, the father asked his son for the second time, “What is this ” The son said, “Father, I have just now told you, it’s a crow!”
After a little while, the old father again asked his son for the third time, “What is this ”
At this time some expression of irritation(恼怒)was felt in the son’s tone when he said to his father with a rebuff(生硬回绝). “It’s a crow, a crow.” A little while later, the father again asked his son the fourth time, “What is this ”
This time, the son shouted at his father, “Why do you keep asking me the same question again and again, although I have told you so many times ‘IT IS A CROW’. Are you not able to understand this ”
A little while later the father went to his room and came back with an old tattered(发皱的)diary, which he had maintained since his son was born. On opening a page, he asked his son to read that page. When the son read it, the following words were written in the diary:
“Today my little son aged three was sitting with me on the sofa, when a crow was sitting on the window. My son asked me 23 times what it was, and I replied to him all 23 times that it was a crow. I hugged him lovingly each time he asked me the same question. I did not at all feel irritated but I rather felt affection for my innocent son,

What if it was further proof that my nose was unattractive What if it made me hate my nose even more The more I thought about it, the more disturbed I became. But it seemed that Baldion didn't notice my uneasiness.Instead, he smiled at me, as if mocking my unease, which clouded my mood even more.
Paragraph 2:
When I looked at the picture, I couldn't help but smile back. She looked like me, yes, but she also looked quite attractive. Her nose was powerful, strong, and almost beautiful. The process has shifted my perspective and I have learned to make up my own mind about what beauty means, whether it is a smiling, strong woman in an oil portrait, or a real-life reflection-complete with a big nose-looking back at me in the mirror.
