My parents keep asking me to work hard on my studies without caring about how I feel every day. Moreover, they don’t allow me to have my own mobile phone and always treat me like a child. How I wish they could really understand me and trust me!
Our daughter Nancy used to share everything with us. But now she seldom tells us anything about her life. We want her to enter a better high school. However, she doesn’t work as hard as before and we are really worried about that.

2.Find out clues and do the cloze test.
3.Underline some useful expressions.
Read the 2nd passage
In the corner of my desk is a note, slowly yellowing from time. It is a card from my mother, with only four sentences, but with enough influence to 1 my life forever.
In it, she praises my abilities as a writer. Each sentence is full of 2 . The word “but” never appears on the card; however, the word “and” is there many times.
Every time I read it, I am 3 to ask myself how many times I’ve said “but” to my own daughters. Although our eldest daughter 4 got all “A”s on her report card, teachers would always suggest that she talked too much in class. I always forgot to ask them if she was improving. 5 I would greet her with, “Congratulations! Your Dad and I are very 6 , but could you try to talk less in class ”
The same was 7 of our younger daughter. Like her sister, she is a lovely and bright child. She also treats the floor of her room as a closet(壁橱), which has often caused me to say, “Yes, that project is great, but 8 up your room!”
I’ve noticed that other parents do the same thing. “The hockey (曲棍球) team won, but Mike should have made that last goal.” “Amy’s the home-coming (同学会) queen, but now she wants $200 to buy a new dress and shoes.” But, but, but.
What I 9 from my mother is to start thinking “and, and, and” instead. For example, “The hockey team won, and Mike did his best in the whole game.” “Amy’s the home-coming queen, and she’s going to look perfect!”
The fact is that “but” feels bad, “and” feels good. When our children feel 10 about what they are doing, they do more of it. This is not to say that children don’t need or won’t pay attention to their parents’ 11 . They do and they will. When these wishes are positive(积极的), amazing things happen. It’s not 12 just to say we love our children. We’re also going to have to start guiding and taking part in what is right with our children.
“No more buts!” is a call for joy. And if I ever forget, I have my mother’s note to remind me.
Tip 2:
The most important thing for parents to do is not to say we love our children, but to think positively about them and always encourage them.
1.Find out the topic sentence.
2.Find out clues and do the cloze test.
3.Underline some useful expressions.
Read the 3rd passage
Hu Ming, a Guizhou University teacher, whose 85-year-old mother has Alzheimer’s disease (阿尔茨海默病), has to take his mother to class with him. And he has done this for years.
Maybe you will say he can have some other people take care of his mother. Indeed, he has sisters. But they 1 do it because his mother only recognizes him. And she 2 him wherever he goes. He also tried a nurse but failed.
“My mother’s illness was 3 . She drank dishwater, and she mistook washing powder(洗衣粉) for salt or sugar.” explained 58-year-old Hu. “I couldn’t imagine she stayed at home without me and that always made me 4 , so I began to take her with me to class.” “With my mother sitting quietly in class, I was able to pay more attention to teaching,” Hu added. But still, there are many different voices. Then Hu told a 5 .
A son took his mother, old and 6 , to a restaurant for dinner. While eating, the mother dropped the food 7 , on her shirt and trousers, the table, the chair and the floor. Other people watched her in disgust(厌恶) while the son was 8 .
When the mother 9 eating, the son quietly took her to the washroom, cleaned the food on the clothes, smoothed her hair and fitted her glasses. When they came out, all the people were watching them. Without saying anything or watching anybody, the son walked 10 to pay the bill and started walking peacefully out with his mother.
At that time, an old woman called out to the son and asked him, “Don’t you think you left something behind you ”
The son thought for a few seconds, “No, madam, I didn’t.” he replied.
The old woman said, “Yes, you did! You gave a lesson to every son and 11 to every mother.”
“To care for those who once 12 for us is our duty. I am a son, and what’s wrong with being the hope for my mother ” Hu said.
Tip 3:
Children shoud also shoulder the responsibility(责任) to take care of their parents in return.
