One night, our house burned down. As a single mother with four kids, she cried bitterly. We had to move into the Ramada Inn, where my mother worked. This was the room where putting one foot in front of the next felt impossible. After four months of not having any of our own air to breathe, we were on the edge of just giving up.
One day Mother stood up, looking crazy. “Let’s go for a ride,” we looked at one another cautiously, not sure if we had heard right. “Come on,” she urged. “It’ll be fun.” We didn’t have fun in our family. Fun was something we might have known about once, which, however, seemed foreign to us now. Still, we piled into our 1972 blue Ford Torino, a blue so faded as to appear almost white. Mother started the car, saying “I thought we’d go to look at all the houses we’ve lived in.”
Embarking on rides that night was my first. Gradually, going for a ride in my mother’s car became a regular thing. Every night we piled into the car and the world changed. We even sang “You Are My Sunshine” and a million other songs. The hope we seemed to have lost in the rest of our life was real again in the car as we sang. One night as we were singing loudly, “In the pines, in the pines, where the sun never shines and you shiver when the cold wind blows ...” Mother suddenly stopped the car. “This is it!” she cried.
“This” was a house, and a for-rent sign in the front yard brought me more joy than I could believe. “Really ” I asked in a low voice. My mother was excited and we all went to look. We might have a house again. That night, I realized my mother was like us. The following weekend, we moved in. The nights in the car were over. Better off, we had new jobs and activities now. One summer in the Torino had saved us. We had lost our home, but my mother had found a way to bring us together and keep us that way.
14. What did the author think of the room in the Ramada Inn
A. It was comfortable. B. It was tiny. C. It was fashionable. D. It was broken.
15. How did the kids feel at first when their mother said “It’ll be fun.”
A. Excited. B. Embarrassed. C. Confused. D. Bored.
16. What does the underlined phrase “Embarking on” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Starting. B. Desiring. C. Designing. D. Fixing.
17. What is the best title for the text
A. Singing in the Rain B. Taking the Easy Path
C. Ringing to the Rescue D. Running Through Life

A 420-meter white steel tube running alongside a railway line in the northern Netherlands could be the start of a new kind of transportation for people and goods. The tube from Hyperloop Center is the heart of the new transport technology that opened recently in Veendam. Developers from Hyperloop Center will be testing the changing technology there over the coming years.
Hyperloop technology was once supported by business leader Elon Musk. Its supporters say it is far faster than short flights, high-speed rail, and trucks. When Musk first presented the idea, he said it could transport people the nearly 645 kilometers between Los Angeles and San Francisco in 30 minutes. But since then, progress has been slow to get from an idea to the real world.
Sascha Lamme is the center’s director. He expects to have the first Hyperloop route by 2030. He said, “There are already preparations being done for such routes in for example Italy or India.”
Robert Noland is a professor at the Bloustein School of Planning and Public Policy at Rutgers University in New Jersey. He told The Associated Press that policy makers go after big ideas of the future but they should invest in simpler transportation structures. He added, “It costs too much to build.” But Lamme noted that they have not added all of the ways they can reduce costs over the next ten years.
The test center’s tube is made up of 34 separate sections mostly 2 and a half meters wide. A piece of equipment next to the tube removes air in the tube to reduce the pressure inside the tube. That reduces air resistance and permits capsules to travel at such high speeds. A capsule built by Dutch hyperloop company Hardt Hyperloop will be tested next month. It receives financial support from private investments, local and national governments, and the European Commission.
While testing continues in Veendam, hyperloop developers hope that routes for their technology will be coming. Lamme stated that getting government authorization (授权) for building routes is their main hardship they encountered. And he said finding new financial support to test and show the technology is what is needed to make this happen.
18. What does Hyperloop Center aim to do
A. Build a 420-meter white steel tube. B. Develop a new transport technology.
C. Ask for donations from the local company. D. Meet the challenges of the new technology.
19. What is the benefit of Hyperloop technology compared to traditional vehicles
A. It’s more eco-friendly. B. It’s cheaper.
C. It’s more efficient. D. It’s much safer.
20. What is Robert Noland’s attitude towards Hyperloop’s future
A. Unclear. B. Indifferent. C. Approving. D. Doubtful.
21. What is the main difficulty about building routes according to Lamme
A. Finding some new financial supports. B. Gaining the government’s approval.
C. Travelling at a very high speed. D. Running along a railway line.
【答案】18. B 19. C 20. D 21. B
【解析】
【导语】这是一篇新闻报道。欧洲Hyperloop Center旨在发展运输技术。
【18题详解】

Developers from Hyperloop Center will be testing the changing technology there over the coming years.(Hyperloop Center的地铁是最近在维丹启用的新运输技术的核心。未来几年,Hyperloop Center的开发人员将在那里测试这项不断变化的技术)”可知,Hyperloop Center旨在发展一种新的运输技术。故选B。
【19题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“Its supporters say it is far faster than short flights, high-speed rail, and trucks.(它的支持者说,它比短途飞行、高速铁路和卡车要快得多)”可知,它比短途飞行、高铁和卡车要高效得多。故选C。
【20题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“He told The Associated Press that policy makers go after big ideas of the future but they should invest in simpler transportation structures. He added, ‘It costs too much to build.’(他告诉美联社,政策制定者追求未来的大想法,但他们应该投资于更简单的交通结构。他补充说,‘建造成本太高了。’)”可推知,Robert Noland认为政府应该投资于更简单的交通结构,Hyperloop建造成本太高,可得出他对Hyperloop的未来持质疑态度。故选D。
【21题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“Lamme stated that getting government authorization (授权) for building routes is their main hardship they encountered.(Lamme表示,获得政府授权修建路线是他们遇到的主要困难)”可知,修建该线路主要的困难是得到政府的批准。故选B。

Joyce Loaiza lives alone in a community for older people in Florida. When she is home, the retired office worker often talks with a friendly female voice that asks about her day. A few kilometers away, the same voice helped 83-year-old Deanna Dezern when her friend died. In New York state, it plays games and music for 92-year-old Marie Broadbent. And in Washington state, it helps 83-year-old Jan Worrell make new friends.
The women are some of the first in the United States to receive the robot ElliQ made by Intuition Robotics. The company and other officials say it is the only device using AI to help older Americans from loneliness.
“You can actually talk to her,” said Loaiza, who is 81. Her ElliQ calls her “Jellybean” for no clear reason. She said amusingly, “She’ll make comments like, ‘I’d go outside if I had hands, but I can’t hold an umbrella.’”
The device looks like a small table light and it has an eyeless, mouthless head that lights up and turns. It remembers each user’s interests and their talks, helping create a special experience with each new discussion. They can be as deep as the meaning of life or as light as a small joke. ElliQ also plays music and provides creative or spiritual sayings. On a video screen that comes with it, it will show different cities and places of interest. The device leads exercises, asks about the owner’s health, and lets the users know when to take medicines and drink water. Intuition Robotics says none of the conversations are heard by the company, with the information staying on each owner’s device.
Intuition Robotics CEO Dor Skuler said the idea for ElliQ came before he launched his company eight years ago. His grandfather who lost his partner needed a helper, but the first did not work out. Skuler then thought a robot could fill the space of a friend by adapting to each person and their interests. He said, “That just did not exist anywhere.” The average user interacts with ElliQ more than 30 times a day and more than 90 percent report lower levels of loneliness, Skuler said.
22. Why are some women in America mentioned in paragraph 1
A. To introduce a topic. B. To explain a concept.
C. To make a comment. D. To make a prediction.
23. Which word can best describe ElliQ from what Loaiza said
A. Powerful. B. Entertaining. C. Ignorant. D. Annoying.
24. What can ElliQ do according to the text
A. Act as a table light. B. Make a short video.
C. Remind users to take pills. D. Hold an umbrella.
25. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
A. The unique feature of ElliQ. B. The wide popularity of ElliQ.
C. The working principle about ElliQ. D. The inspiration of inventing ElliQ.
【答案】22. A 23. B 24. C 25. D

A. Act as a table light. B. Make a short video.
C. Remind users to take pills. D. Hold an umbrella.
25. What does the last paragraph mainly talk about
