When we’re in the early months or years of learning another language, it can be hard to find good novels to read that can help us learn. But there are some books in English that experts think might be just right for beginners. Here are four of them.
Refugee Boy by Benjamin Zephaniah
As a book published in 2001, it is about a young refugee (难民) who arrives in the United Kingdom from Africa. With powerful themes and simple language. English teacher Kieran Donaghy recommends it because it’s a good choice for beginners.
Animal Farm by George Orwell
This book was published in 1945 in America. Although it’s now quite old, it’s also quite short, and was written in a. very clear way. Orwell said writers shouldn’t use unnecessary words, and his story of talking animals taking over a farm is easy to follow.
No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency by Alexander McCall Smith
This is the name of the first book in a series of detective (侦探) stories. First came out in 1998, the series is recommended by the International language school EF Education, which says that funny characters, interesting stories and simple language make these books great for learners. The stories take place in Botswana, and there are now more than 20 books in the series.
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time by Mark Haddon
Donaghy also recommends this popular novel published in 2003. Although it’s not really for children, it’s told from the point of view of a young boy, and this means the language is easy to understand. In the book, the boy, named Christopher, tries to find out what happened to his neighbor’s dog.

Mary Lennox is a young English girl in India who is surrounded by servants. She’s a weak, selfish, and spoiled (宠坏的) child. When her parents and all their servants suddenly die from illness, she is sent to Yorkshire, England to live with her uncle, Mr. Craven.
Mr. Craven keeps his distance from Mary and soon leaves on business. She’s left to take care of herself in his big house and its gardens. As the weeks pass, Mary becomes more independent, grows stronger, and gets more respect for others. Later, she becomes friends with Dickon, a local boy and she also helps her uncle’s son—Colin, get well.
The Secret Garden’s main themes include the importance of friendship, the value of outdoor activities, and the way a healthy outlook on life can affect one’s health. When Mary first arrives at her uncle’s house, she’s a rude, selfish person. This is because she’s never had a friend her own age and has never been told “No.” Later, Dickon helps her develop empathy (同情) for others, which has had the greatest impact on her.
The natural world is key to the second of the book’s themes. At first, Mary is weak because she has never had to do anything for herself. She isn’t even capable of dressing herself without help. Colin is also weak. He stays in bed or in a wheelchair because he believes he can’t walk. The sunshine and fresh air of the gardens benefits both of them in the story.
The third important theme is the power of a positive attitude. People’s minds need nurturing (培养). An important moment for Colin happens when he determines to be a healthy person instead of a sickly one. He repeats his longing out loud and wishes hard for it to come true. Holding this idea in his mind is a key part of his recovery. It is his belief in himself and his determination to succeed that finally helps him regain his health.
4. Why was Mary Lennox sent to Yorkshire, England

Thai wildlife officials have laid out a plan to bring peace to a central Thai city after at least a decade of human-monkey conflict (冲突).
The monkeys that hang around Lopburi are a major tourist draw. But after years of conflicts with residents and visitors, and several failed attempts to bring peace with population controls, local people and businesses have had enough.
The monkeys often try to take food from humans, sometimes leaving people with injuries. In March a woman got her knee hurt after a monkey pulled her off her feel, and another man was knocked off a motorcycle by a hungry monkey.
The authorities hope to catch some 2,500 monkeys and place them in massive wildlife preserves, said Athapol Charoenshunsa, the director-general of the Department of National parks, Wildlife and plant Conservation. They’ll work with wildlife experts to find a way for a limited number of monkeys to stay freely in the city, he added.
“I don’t want humans to have to hurt monkeys, and I don’t want monkeys to have to hurt humans,” he told reporters during a news conference in Bangkok. “I expect the first period of the operation to start within weeks, and I believe the wildlife preserve will be able to contain (容纳) thousands of them and will solve the problem very quickly.”
Athapol said they are also working in other areas of Thailand that are facing problems with monkeys. He said 52 of the country’s 77 provinces often report monkey problems.
The monkeys are said to be a symbol of the province, about 140 kilometers north of Bangkok, where the ancient Three Pagodas temple celebrates a yearly “Monkey Buffet” festival. However, some have complained about the city’s monkey troubles on tourists and residents feeding the animals, which they say drew monkeys into the city, helped with their numbers, and got them used to getting food from humans.

A. They are fond of those moneys. B. They hope to feed more monkeys.
C. They are troubled by those monkeys. D. They want to protect those monkeys.

A. Cut off the monkey’s food supply. B. Catch them for use as research subjects.
C. Enclose them in a zoo to entertain tourists. D. Cut down the numbers of them in the town.
10. What is the last paragraph mainly about
A. The significance of those monkeys.
B. People’s different opinions on those monkeys.
C. The environmental problems caused by those monkeys.
D. Reasons why monkeys become a symbol of the province.

Keller Rinaudo Cliffton’s first company, Romotive, made toy cars that became robots by fixing a smartphone on top. But Rinaudo Clifton soon realized that he didn’t want to just make toys—he wanted to find ways to solve important problems.
He found what he was looking for on a visit to a health institute (机构) in Tanzania. There he saw that they had developed a system allowing health workers to make emergency requests for medicine and vaccines (疫苗), but had no effective way to deliver them. So in 2014, Romotive became Zipline, and started designing and building delivery drones (无人机) called Zips. By 2016, the company began deliveries in Rwanda, starting with just one hospital, but growing to 20 within a year.
Zipline now also operates in other African countries like Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria and Ivory Coast, as well as parts of the US and Japan. Now as the world’s largest commercial drone delivery system, it says it has made more than 700,000 deliveries, carrying everything from vaccines and medical things to hot food and phone chargers. Zipline says its centralized storage system and fast deliveries result in less waste when delivering blood products, and people miss fewer vaccines in places where Zipline operates.
Its first drone, the Platform 1 Zip, looks like a small airplane that can carry a little under 2 kilograms, going as far as almost 100 kilometers away at speeds of around 100 kilometers per hour. Things are dropped from about 20-25 meters above the ground.
The company’s new Platform 2 Zip, which has gone through the research and development periods and is currently being tested out, is promised to be ready for customer flights by 2025, can carry about twice as much as the Platform 1.
The company says that Platform 2 Zip can deliver to much more precise (精确的) locations up to seven times as fast as a car, completing 16-kilometer deliveries in about 10 minutes. And by 2026, it expects to run more flights each year than most major US airlines.
12. Where did Keller get inspiration of making delivery drones
A. In a hospital. B. In a company.
C. In a children’s center. D. In a health institute.
13. Where does Zipline focus its business on
A. Europe. B. Africa. C. Asia. D. America.
14. What do we know about Platform 2 Zip
A. It lacks financial support. B. It has been widely used.
C. It is still under development. D. It has a better carrying capacity
15. What’s the outlook of Platform 2 Zip according to the text
A. Awful. B. Debatable. C. Promising. D. Unclear.
【答案】12. D 13. B 14. D 15. C

The Cry of a Woman’s Heart
The poor children who attended our church-supported Christmas party feasted on Christmas foods, enjoyed wonderful shows and received various gifts from Santa. When all the children had gone, we breathed a sigh of relief with tiredness.
Pointing to the extra gifts left in Santa’s black bag, Jean asked, “What are we going to do with all these toys ” As we were lost in reflection, Bobbie said, “Remember the three sisters who were at the party Why don’t we deliver the toys to their house on Monday while they are in school to give them a surprise ” Everyone agreed. Since I lived closest to the three little girls, I volunteered to deliver the gifts.
On Monday, I drove to their home, confident their mother would be there. As I got out of my car a small dog appeared. He barked (吠叫) loudly and followed dangerously close to me as I hurried to the front door. With one large bag of toys, I knocked on the door. No one answered. I knocked repeatedly for several minutes. Still no answer.
Disappointed, I said, “Okay, now what am I supposed to do I can’t carry these presents around all day!”
Managing to stay a few steps ahead of the barking dog. I returned to my car. After I calmed down I remembered hearing one lady at the church mention some needy children, who didn’t attended the party, had no toys. They lived in a wooden house not far from where I sat.
As I approached that location, I saw three shabby (破损的) wooden houses side by side. “Oh, no,” I whispered. “How am I supposed to know which house is the right one ” I pulled into the large dirt yard shared by all three families. As I got out of the car, I thought to myself, “Well, I’ll try the middle one first.” I knocked on the door. As I prepared to knock again, the door opened halfway.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 A tired-looking young woman with reddened eyes stood in the doorway. She stared cautiously at me and asked who I was looking for. I explained my intention and was invited inside. With faint light from the teetering light bulb, I could tell what a poor life the family was living. Beside an old wooden bed were two little children, who were both smiling at me, curious and amazed. I questioned if there were the other two houses alongside where two children who didn’t attend the party lived. The woman nodded in silence.
Knowing that this was just the house I wanted, I was secretly relieved. Finally the toys would go to some children who they belonged to. The children’s faces lit up with joy when they knew they would get their first toys for Christmas. The woman forced a smile and I could notice her discomfort and shyness. Though she appeared calming, the gentle shaking of her shoulders gave her away. I could hear the cry of her heart. I distributed all the toys at last. That day meant a lot to me. For me, it was nothing but a task, while for her, it was more than a goodwill gesture, which brought warmth to the whole family.

A. There’s no one to take care of her. B. She has to increase life experience.
C. She desires to learn to be independent. D. Some of her best friends are living there.
5. According to the text, who influences Mary the most
A. Her parents. B. Her uncle. C. Dickon. D. Colin.

7. What is the text

8. What does the underlined phrase “have had enough” mean in Paragraph 2
A They are fond of those moneys. B. They hope to feed more monkeys.
C. They are troubled by those monkeys. D. They want to protect those monkeys.
9. How will the authorities deal with those monkeys
A. Cut off the monkey’s food supply. B. Catch them for use as research subjects.
C Enclose them in a zoo to entertain tourists. D. Cut down the numbers of them in the town.
