It was just after 17:00 on a mid-September evening at a historical Church in Harlem, New York City Mostly the low-income black neighborhood sat at dining tables. In front of them was a menu listing three courses, which they only saw on TV. Each dish was prepared with “leftover” ingredients (食材), offered free of charge and placed alongside a blue card that read “you are loved” in hand-written script.
This is one of 14 community centers created around the world in cities like Milan, Paris, Mérida, Lima, Sydney and now New York through three-Michelin starred chef Massimo Bottura’s Food for Soul project. He started the project in 2016 with his wife, Lara Gilmore, to help fight the global problem of food waste by using ingredients that might otherwise be thrown away by suppliers and to give socially and economically vulnerable people access to high quality meals.
Partnering with architects, artists and community leaders, the project is transforming spaces, which are not fully taken advantage of, such as churches and even a historical home into intentionally designed cultural centers equipped with kitchens, dining rooms and other facilities that help create a sense of well-being, connection and inclusion.
When I asked Bottura why he created such thoughtful meals within beautifully appointed spaces for the low-income, he told me that everyone deserves respect and beauty, and of course, healthy food. “They come in and are completely lost because they’re not used to coming into beautiful places like this. But once they’re here, they realize that this place is their place. It’s not my place,” he said.
Bottura’s philosophy is one that comes from the heart. T-shirts worn by volunteers at his community centers say “cooking is an act of love”, and he approaches the food served there with as much care as he does at his restaurants, probably even more, since the diners are extremely stressed and need healthy food to feel better. Bottura insists that it’s important to change the language around the food served in his community centers.
4. Why does the author describe such a scene in the first paragraph
A. To introduce Bottura’s project.
B. To show the appeal of the dishes.
C. To emphasize the warm atmosphere.
D. To explain how the event is organized.
5. According to the text, which of the following statements is correct
A. The dining centers were all transformed from churches.
B. Bottura started the project to practice his cooking skills.
C. The diners felt quite at home when coming in the centers.
D. The low-income can enjoy high quality food at the center.
6. Which of the following best describes Massimo Bottura
A. Skilled and strict. B. Brave and influential.
C. Caring and considerate. D. Wealthy and humorous.
7. What fundamental philosophy does Massimo Bottura express
A. Respect and beauty are for all. B. Beautiful places inspire respect.
C. Cooking should be a profession. D. Community centers bring people together.
C
Proper questioning has become a lost art. The curious four-year-old asks a lot of questions—incessant streams of “Why ” and “Why not ” might sound familiar—but as we grow older, our questioning decreases. In a recent survey of more than 200 of our clients, we found that those with children estimated that 70-80% of their kids’ dialogues with others were comprised of questions. But those same clients said that only 15-25% of their own interactions consisted of questions. Why the drop off
Think back to your time growing up and in school. Chances are that you received the most recognition or reward when you got the correct answers. Later in life, that motivator continues. At work, we often reward those who answer questions, not those who ask them. Questioning conventional wisdom can even lead to being distanced, or considered a threat.
Because expectations for decision-making have gone from “get it done soon” to “get it done now” to “it should have been done yesterday”, we tend to jump to conclusions instead of asking more questions. And the unfortunate side effect of not asking enough questions is poor decision-making. That’s why it’s vital that we slow down and take the time to ask more and better questions. At best, we’ll arrive at better conclusions. At worst, we’ll avoid a lot of rework later on.
Aside from not speaking up enough, many professionals don’t think about how different types of questions can lead to different outcomes. We should lead a conversation by asking the right kinds of questions, based on the problem we’re trying to solve. In some cases, we’ll want to expand our view of the problem rather than keeping it narrowly focused. In others, we may want to challenge basic assumptions or confirm our understanding in order to feel more confident in our conclusions. Therefore, asking the right kinds of questions is what counts in achieving a goal.
8. What does the underlined word “incessant” in paragraph 1 most probably mean
A Simple. B. Random. C. Constant. D. Annoying.
9. What accounts for the decline of questioning in adulthood
A. One poses a threat to the company if they ask questions.
B. Adults don’t get as many chances as they did in childhood.
C. Those who question popular beliefs are thought to be wise.
D. Those asking questions don’t always get positive feedback.
10. What can we infer from paragraph 3
A. Redoing is unavoidable despite thoughtful questions.
B. Decisions made in a hurry may turn out to be wrong.
C. Better questions can surely bring desirable outcomes.
D. More attention should be paid to making conclusions.
11. What might the author continue talking about
A. Proper questions that should be raised. B. Important goals that we are to achieve.
C. Right kinds of answers to the questions. D. Ways to expand our view of the problem.

Over 2,000 years ago, Baiae was the most magnificent resort town in Italy. Wealthy statesmen including Cicero and Caesar were once drawn to its natural springs. But over the centuries, volcanic activity submerged this playground of the Roman nobility, leaving half of it beneath the Mediterranean.
Today, Baiae is one of the world’s few underwater archaeological parks open to visitors wanting to explore the remains of the ancient Roman city. A protected marine area, the site needs to be monitored for damage caused by divers and environmental factors. However, explains Davidde, Italy’s national supervisor for underwater cultural heritage, “Communication underwater is challenging.”
Cabled systems are the most reliable, but they are difficult to maintain and cover a limited operational area. And wireless internet doesn’t work well in water, because of the way water interacts with electromagnetic waves.
So Davidde teamed up with a group of engineers led by Chiara Petrioli, a professor at Sapienza University. Petrioli’s team has developed a network of underwater wireless sensors capable of gathering environmental data and transmitting it to land in real time. The system relies on AI algorithms (算法) to constantly change the network protocol (网络协议). As the sea conditions change, the algorithms adjust the information path, allowing the signal to travel up to two kilometers and data to be sent between transmitters one kilometer apart.
At Baiae, underwater internet allows remote, continuous monitoring of environmental conditions. Besides, it allows divers to communicate with one another and with colleagues above the surface, who can also use the technology to locate them with a high degree of accuracy.
Davidde anticipates that the network will be available to tourists visiting the archaeological site in the coming months. As they swim over the ruins, visitors will use waterproof smart tablets to communicate and to view 3D reconstructions of the ruins.
“Underwater internet has made monitoring of the archaeological site simpler and more efficient,” says Davidde, “At the same time, we can offer the public a new, interactive way to explore the underwater park.”
12. What do we know about Baiae
A. It was noted for natural springs. B. It is a playground for sports lovers.
C. It was destroyed by human activity. D. It is not open to adventurous visitors.
13. What is the third paragraph mainly about
A. Applications of underwater internet.
B. Different types of underwater network.
C. Difficulties of underwater communication.
D. Conditions of the underwater environment.
14. What is the underwater network capable of doing at present
A. Reconstructing the ruins of the underwater park.
B. Making it easier to monitor archaeological sites.
C. Bringing more visitors to submerged Roman city.
D. Only allowing divers to communicate underwater.
15. What is the purpose of this text
A. To explain underwater communication.
B. To analyze the effect of climate change.
C. To introduce a new underwater network.
D. To attract more visitors to explore Baiae.

The perfect moment to apologize is the moment you realize you’ve done something wrong. ____16____ But when it comes to our own mistakes, we often try to postpone apologizing or avoid it altogether by lying or making excuses for our actions.
Apologizing is seldom comfortable or easy. To be effective, most apologies need to contain the following elements:
____17____
Start by describing exactly what you did wrong, without avoiding the worst truths. Once the facts are out, admit that your behavior broke a moral rule, and, as a result, you’re in the wrong. Accept responsibility.
An explanation
A truthful explanation is your chance to rebuild a strong, peaceful relationship. By contrast, excuses are made to avoid taking responsibility. Leave them out of your apology.
Expressions of your sincere regret
Anyone who has been on the receiving end of the comment “I’m sorry you feel that way” knows the difference between sincere regret and an attempt to avoid responsibility for bad behavior. ____18____
Reparations for damage
____19____ Often there will be nothing tangible to repair. Hearts and relationships are broken more often than objects. In such cases, your efforts should focus on restoring the other person’s dignity.
An apology is the end of our struggle with history. From this truthful place we are free to move forward, whether or not we are forgiven. ____20____ But it shows that we are willing to be honest about our imperfections and determined in our efforts to do better.
A. Ways for apologizing
B. Full admission of the offence
C. No one likes to be put on the spot
D. Apologizing doesn’t make us perfect.
E. An apology includes real repair work: not just saying “I’m sorry”.
F. You are highly unlikely to be forgiven if you apologize without regret.
G This seems obvious when we are thinking about someone else’s faults.

One year ago, when we were in the fifth grade, a new classmate named Jack joined us. He was often late for class and had a strange smell on him, which made the girls not want to be “neighbours” with him, let alone sit next to him. It is said that once, a naughty boy curiously opened his backpack and many crushed soda cans and empty drink bottles that we usually throw into the trash fell out. Therefore, the boys in our class mocked (嘲笑) him as the “trash king”.
Later, during a class meeting, our teacher, Ms. Zhang, told us about his story of using garbage to make inventions. It turns out that Jack is not an ordinary elementary school student, but a “garbage-inspired inventor” who has won the city invention award. According to Ms. Zhang, most of his inventions were picked up from garbage dumps (堆). During that class meeting, Jack showed us his invention of a“domestic wastewater separation system”.
Afterwards, some of us became deeply interested in these small inventions and started to admire Jack’s way of “picking up trash”. We even joined him in picking up trash on weekends and during holidays. From then on, we no longer called him the “trash king“. Instead, we formed a group of five boys and actively searched for usable materials in various garbage dumps around the city. Under Jack’s guidance, we learned that there are many uses for seemingly useless trash. Once, we stayed at school to process the collected materials. Jack mentioned that he was facing a problem with his latest invention—a small cart for buying vegetables that needed to be lightweight. All other materials were solved except for the wheels. How could we find a suitable material for the wheels We racked our brains (绞尽脑汁) and came up with different ideas, such as using soda cans or taking off the wheels from suitcases. However, Jack reminded us that our group should focus on making inventions from waste rather than causing damage to create them. We were all deep in thought.
注意:
1.续写词数应150左右;
When I got home and drank a bottle of water, I suddenly had an idea.

A 5. D 6. C 7. A
根据第一段“It was just after 17:00 on a mid-September evening at a historical Church in Harlem, New York City Mostly the low-income black neighborhood sat at dining tables. In front of them was a menu listing three courses, which they only saw on TV.
根据第二段“This is one of 14 community centers created around the world in cities like Milan, Paris, Mérida, Lima, Sydney and now New York through three-Michelin starred chef Massimo Bottura’s Food for Soul project. (这是通过拥有三星米其林荣誉的厨师Massimo Bottura的Food for Soul项目,在米兰、巴黎、梅里达、利马、悉尼以及现在的纽约等城市创建的14个社区中心之一。)”可知,文本中提到了这些社区中心是为低收入人群提供服务的,并且通过使用可能被浪费的食材来准备高质量的餐食。这表明低收入人群可以在这些中心享受到高质量的食物,因此正确答案是D。
【6题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“When I asked Bottura why he created such thoughtful meals within beautifully appointed spaces for the low-income, he told me that everyone deserves respect and beauty, and of course, healthy food. (当我问Bottura为什么他为低收入人群创造了如此周到的餐食和精心布置的空间时,他告诉我每个人都应得到尊重和美丽,当然还有健康的食物。)”可知,从Bottura的回答中可以看出,他非常关心和体贴那些低收入人群,他相信每个人都应该享受到尊重、美丽和健康的食物。这表明他是一个关心他人的人,因此正确答案是C。
【7题详解】
推理判断题。根据第四段“They come in and are completely lost because they’re not used to coming into beautiful places like this. But once they’re here, they realize that this place is their place. It’s not my place,” he said.
A. Simple. B. Random. C. Constant. D. Annoying.
C 9. D 10. B 11. A
根据第二段“Think back to your time growing up and in school. Chances are you received the most recognition or reward when you got the correct answers. Later in life, that motivator continues. At work, we often reward those who answer questions, not those who ask them.(回想一下你在学校的成长过程。当你得到正确答案时,你可能会得到最多的认可或奖励。在以后的生活中,这种动力会继续存在。在工作中,我们经常奖励那些回答问题的人,而不是那些提出问题的人)”可知,提问题的人不一定能得到积极的反馈是致了成年后提问的减少的原因。故选D。
【10题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“Because expectations for decision-making have gone from “get it done soon” to “get it done now” to “it should have been done yesterday”, we tend to jump to conclusions instead of asking more questions. And the unfortunate side effect of not asking enough questions is poor decision-making.(因为对决策的期望已经从“尽快完成”变成了“现在完成”,再变成了“昨天就应该完成”,我们倾向于直接下结论,而不是问更多的问题。没有问足够多的问题的副作用是糟糕的决策)”可知,匆忙做出的决定可能会被证明是错误的。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Therefore, asking the right kinds of questions is what counts in achieving a goal.(因此,问正确的问题是实现目标的关键)”可知,接下来要讨论应该提出适当的问题。故选A。

G. This seems obvious when we are thinking about someone else’s faults.
G 17. B 18. F 19. E 20. D
根据上文“The perfect moment to apologize is the moment you realize you’ve done something wrong.(道歉的最佳时机是当你意识到自己做错了什么的时候)”以及后文“But when it comes to our own mistakes, we often try to postpone apologizing or avoid it altogether by lying or making excuses for our actions.(但是当涉及到我们自己的错误时,我们经常试图通过撒谎或为我们的行为找借口来推迟道歉或完全避免道歉)”可知,后文提到自己犯错会给自己找借口,说明发现别人的缺点容易,故G选项“当我们想到别人的缺点时,这似乎是显而易见的”符合语境,故选G。
根据本段内容“Start by describing exactly what you did wrong, without avoiding the worst truths. Once the facts are out, admit that your behavior broke a moral rule, and, as a result, you’re in the wrong. Accept responsibility.(首先准确地描述你做错了什么,不要回避最糟糕的事实。一旦事实大白,承认你的行为违反了道德准则,因此,你是错的。承担责任)”可知,本段的主旨是不回避错误,大胆承认过错。故B选项“完全承认过错”符合语境,故选B。
【18题详解】
根据标题“Expressions of your sincere regret(表达你诚挚的歉意)”以及上文“Anyone who has been on the receiving end of the comment “I’m sorry you feel that way” knows the difference between sincere regret and an attempt to avoid responsibility for bad behavior.(任何听到过“我很抱歉你那样想”这句话的人都知道真诚的后悔和试图逃避不良行为的责任之间的区别)”可知,本段的主旨是表达你诚挚的歉意,说明逃避责任,不真诚不回得到别人原谅,F选项regret对应标题regret。
根据后文“Often there will be nothing tangible to repair. Hearts and relationships are broken more often than objects. In such cases, your efforts should focus on restoring the other person’s dignity.(通常不会有什么有形的修复。心灵和关系比物品更容易破碎。在这种情况下,你的努力应该集中在恢复对方的尊严上)”可知,本段主要说明了道歉后的修复工作,E选项中repair对应后文repair。故E选项“道歉包括真正的修复工作:不只是说‘对不起’”符合语境,故选E。
【20题详解】
根据上文“An apology is the end of our struggle with history. From this truthful place we are free to move forward, whether or not we are forgiven.(道歉是我们与历史斗争的结束。

注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;

Jack indeed adopted my suggestion and fixed a row of bottle caps as wheels on his vegetable cart.
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
When I got home and drank a bottle of water, I suddenly had an idea. What if we could use bottle caps as wheels for Jack’s vegetable cart It seemed like a simple solution, but it could work if we found enough bottle caps. Excited, I shared my idea with the group the next day. Jack’s eyes lit up with enthusiasm as he realized the potential of this suggestion. We immediately set out to collect as many bottle caps as we could find, scouring not only the garbage dumps but also asking friends and family to save them for us.
Jack indeed adopted my suggestion and fixed a row of bottle caps as wheels on his vegetable cart. It was a moment of triumph for all of us, seeing our collective efforts and creativity come to fruition. The cart rolled smoothly, and we celebrated our success with high-fives and laughter. This experience taught us the power of collaboration, innovation, and looking beyond the surface of things. Inspired by Jack’s ingenuity, our group continued to explore ways to repurpose waste, knowing that small actions could lead to big changes in our community and beyond.
