From the age of 6, Samirah Horton was bullied(欺凌) by her classmates for the things that made her different — her size and her sharp voice. Rather than giving up, Horton decided to pick up a microphone and make sure other children knew they weren’t alone. “I didn’t want other kids to go through that experience,” says Horton, “especially at a very young age.” Now, alongside attending eighth grade classes, she’s also building an anti-bullying platform to reach students across the country.
For as long as Horton remembers, she’s felt a special connection to music. She remembers her mother always having the radio on, and her father teaching her how to deejay (主持). Music gives her unlimited power to do the duty. “It’s music that fuels my mission, allowing me to spread this important message,” she says. Now as the Kid DJ for her hometown team, you can hear anything from the hip-hop classics to songs of her own, including the anti-bullying song “No You Won’t Bully Me”.
Her message has reached beyond the DJ set. At 8, Horton turned one of her songs into a 26-page picture book, which has reached thousands of people across America. In the book, she mentions the over 160,000 students who miss school daily for fear of being bullied.
Horton isn’t sure exactly what the future holds, but for now, she’s positive about leading her school’s student government. “I don’t know exactly what I’ll be doing, but I know I’ll be making a positive influence on the world.” she says . She’s already on her way, but her biggest achievement in her own eyes is persuading others not to doubt themselves along the way. “Don’t care what anybody tells you,” she says, “You are never too young to make a change.”
24.Why was Samirah Horton bullied
A.Because of her age. B.Because of her weight.
C.Because of her grades. D.Because of her hobby.
25.What does the underlined word “mission” in paragraph 2 mean
A.Task. B.Anger C.Skill. D.Curiosity.
26.What can we learn from Horton’s story
A.Fear invites danger. B.No voice is too small.
C.Success is peace of mind. D.Imperfections are beauty.
27.What might be the best title for the passage
A.A Picture-Book Writer B.A Hip-Hop Music Lover
C.An Environmental Activist D.An Anti-Bullying Advocate

Binge-watching(刷剧) is when a person watches more than one episode of a show in a row. With developments in the speed and connectivity of the Internet, increases in technology and the rise of on-demand entertainment companies, people can now have their favorite shows streamed(流播) directly to their television at their convenience.
This behavior is nothing new. In fact, binge-watching has been officially listed in dictionaries since 2015. The entertainment companies recognize this behavior and many take steps to encourage it. Often, instead of releasing each episode on a week-by-week basis, an entire series will become available concurrently. Once the episode finishes, many platforms will display pop-ups with “you might like” suggestions, or will automatically play the next episode.
However, recent research suggests that out of the more than half of British adults who watch more than one episode of a show back-to-back(一集接一集地), almost a third have admitted missing sleep or becoming tired as a result; and 25% have neglected their household chores(家务活). Next we’ll be missing work!
Bingeing has other connections — binge eating, binge drinking and binge smoking. All of them are often associated with a lack of control and a possible route to addiction. Lindsey Fussell, consumer group director, said, “The days of waiting a week for the next episode are largely gone, with people finding it hard to resist(抗拒) watching multiple episodes around the house or on the move.” If people find binge-watching hard to resist, are we witnessing the birth of a new type of addiction
The countless number of information and entertainment that television and online media can bring us is, many would say, a good thing. However, when the activity begins to bleed into other areas, causing us to stop functioning, then it becomes a problem. So, what’s the answer Moderation! Neither a tiny amount, nor too much. After all, as the old proverb says, “A little of what you fancy does you good.”
28.How did the writer develop the first paragraph
A.By giving a definition. B.By telling a story.
C.By listing some examples. D.By analyzing the cause and effect.
29.Which of the following can best replace the underlined word “concurrently” in Paragraph2
A.For convenience. B.At the same time. C.In detail. D.Free of charge.
30.What Lindsey said in Paragraph 4 implies that ______.
A.people can’t control their feelings B.people can’t resist the temptation of Bingeing
C.people have no patience to do work D.people are addicted to waiting for a new episode
31.What advice did the writer give at last
A.To keep online media from stopping functioning.
B.To enjoy entertainment as much as possible.
C.To learn life lessons from the episodes.
D.To watch episodes in a moderate way.
D
“If you don’t behave, I’ll call the police” is a lie that parents generally use to get their young children to behave. Parents’ lies work in the short term, but a new study led by NTU Singapore suggests that they’re associated with harmful effects when the child becomes an adult.
The research team asked 379 Singaporean young adults whether their parents lied to them when they were children, how much they lie to their parents now, and how well they adjust to adulthood challenges. Adults who reported being lied to more as children were more likely to report deceiving their parents in their adulthood. They also said they faced greater difficulty in meeting psychological and social challenges.
Lead author Assistant Professor Setoh Peipei from NTU Singapore’s School of Social Sciences said, “Parenting by lying can seem to save time especially when the real reason behind why parents want children to do something is complicated to explain. When parents tell children that ‘honesty is the best policy’, but display dishonesty by lying, such behavior can send conflicting messages to their children. Parents’ dishonesty may eventually break trust and promote dishonesty in children. Our research suggests that parenting by lying is a practice that has bad consequences for children when they grow up. Parents should be aware of this and consider alternatives to lying, such as acknowledging children’s feelings, giving information so children know what to expect, offering choices and problem-solving together, to help children develop good behavior.”
The analysis found that parenting by lying could place children at a greater risk of developing problems that the society disapproves, such as aggression (攻击性) and rule-breaking behavior. Some limitations of the study include relying on what young adults report about their past experience of parents’ lying.” Future research can explore using more information providers, such as parents, to report on the same topic,” suggested Asst Prof Setoh.
32.Why is a parental li e mentioned in the first paragraph
A.To introduce the topic for discussion. B.To tell a popular way to educate children.
C.To prove the great influence of the police. D.To show the harmful effects of parental lies.
33.The underlined word “deceiving” in Paragraph 2 is closest in meaning to “______”.
A.worrying B.abusing C.disappointing D.cheating
34.According to the research, which of the following can parents do
A.Give children chances to choose. B.Force good behavior on children.
C.Let children solve problems alone. D.Stop children knowing what to expect.
35.What does the last paragraph imply about the study
A.It is quite controversial (有争议的). B.It is rather meaningless.
C.It needs to be perfected. D.It demands honest responses.

Super-foods are things you eat that do more than satisfy your hunger because they help your body work better and be better. Think of your body as a car. 36 Our bodies are just the same.
Eating super-foods can change your life in many ways. 37 One reason for this is that many super-foods are naturally low in calories. Another reason is that sticking to eating them is very easy.
With most diets, people concentrate on what shouldn’t be eaten. With super-foods, they focus on all the great things they can eat . 38 Eating super-foods over time helps keep you looking young, fights heart disease and cures Type II diabetes and some cancers.
39 While many are low in calories, some, such as whole grains, are still high in them. Eating just super-foods won’t make you instantly healthier.
Instead, getting a wide variety of foods, super-foods included, and doing your best to make healthy choices is the better solution.
Besides, with all the energy that is packed in super-foods, you will be ready for any challenge that awaits you. If you want to start adding super-foods to your diet, do it at your own pace. 40
A.However, you should not eat just super-foods.
B.Taking one small step makes it easier to take the next.
C.That is very true because you are eating energy-filled food.
D.The better the gas you put in your car, the better it will run.
E.There are other benefits to adding them to your diet as well.
F.Lastly, whether super-foods benefit your health remains to be seen.
G.Not surprisingly, people who start eating them lose weight quickly.

第二节 (满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was a single mother in my 30s who lived down and out with my daughter Peggy in a small apartment, struggling hard to make ends meet.
One day, I headed to the downtown for an interview. I sat down in the streetcar, and there against the seat was a beautiful silk umbrella with a silver handle decorated with gold scrolls, among which there was a name carved.
On impulse(冲动)I determined to find the owner myself. I got off the streetcar in the heavy rain and thankfully opened the umbrella to protect myself. Then I searched a telephone book for the name. I found it immediately and called it, waiting patiently, and then a lady answered.
“Yes,” she said in surprise, with extreme excitement.” It is my umbrella which was stolen more than a year ago.”
So appealing was her pleasure that I forgot I was looking for a job and went directly to her small house. She took the umbrella with teary eyes, explaining with a choking voice that the umbrella was given by her parents, now dead. Her happiness at retrieving (找回) this special possession was such that to have accepted her reward would have spoiled something, so I refused her offer and left.
The following months were hard. I could only obtain temporary employment, for a small salary. What was worse, I had just lost my last job before Christmas, with only fifteen dollars left. Unless a miracle happened, I would be homeless in January, hungry and jobless. I had prayed steadily for weeks, and there had been no answer but this coldness and darkness.
The air was full of Christmas merriment, with the bells ringing and children shouting in the bitter dusk of the evening. But there should be no Christmas for me, I knew, no gifts, no remembrance whatsoever. Thinking of this, I couldn’t control my tears on my way home, but I managed a smile so I could greet my little daughter. She opened the door for me and threw herself in my arms, screaming joyously and demanding desirably for her Christmas gift. There I stood, frozen, overwhelmed by bitterness.

I am John Clarke, a 2018 graduate from Shiyan High School. Knowing with delight that a big celebration for the 75th Anniversary is around the corner, I would like to extend my utmost congratulations!
My three years here has witnessed the considerable achievements of our school. The wide range of curriculum and the fascinating after-class activities are eye-opening to me, giving me a deep insight into Chinese education core. Yet what impressed most, also the most touching memory was no doubt the care and love I received when I was ill in hospital.
Finally, happy birthday to my Alma mate r and I sincerely hope you will fulfil further success.
Yours sincerely,
John Clarke
六、读后续写【参考范文】
Suddenly, the doorbell rang and Peggy rushed to answer it, calling that it must be Santa Claus. Then I heard a man talking heartily to her and went to the door. He was a delivery man, and his arms were full of packages. “This is a mistake,” I said, but he read the name on the packages and they were for me. When he had gone, I didn’t know what to do. Later, Peggy and I sat on the floor looking at each other. What a surprise! I looked for the name of the sender.
Suddenly, a note attached to one package caught my eye. I picked up the note, which read “Thanks for returning the umbrella. Merry Christmas! ”It was sent by the lady. Holding the note tightly, I was on the edge of tears, with a stream of warmth spreading through my body. On that cold Christmas, I forgot I had no money for the rent and only fifteen dollars in my pocket. We just sat in our small apartment unwrapping the gifts with happiness. A sweet peace flooded me like a blessing which made me hopeful again.

Text 10
M: For years, thousands have traveled to the Rocky Mountains in search of hidden treasure. Adventurers were on the hunt for a bronze box. It was said to be filled with diamonds, rubies, and gold. On June 6, news broke that the box was finally found. The person who found it has chosen to remain unidentified. Forrest Fenn is an antiques collector. He lives in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Fen n created the treasure hunt more than 10 years ago. He hoped it would inspire people to explore nature. Fen n received a picture confirming that the box had been found. Fen n published an autobiography in 2010. It’s called The Thrill of the Chase. In the book, he gave some clues about where the treasure box was located. The clues were in a form of a 24-verse poem. Readers had to use the poem to solve the puzzle. A few people even died in the attempt. The jewel-filled box is estimated to be worth more than $1 million. It took him two trips to bring everything to the hiding spot. “I feel halfway kind of glad, halfway kind of sad because the chase is over,” Fen n says. “I congratulate the thousands of people who participated in the search and hope they will continue to be drawn by the promise of other discoveries.”
