The literary world has a new star. Novelist Abdulrazak Gurnah is the winner of the 2021 Nobel Prize in Literature in recognition of his“compassionate penetration(揭示) of the effects of colonialism(殖民主义) and the fate of the refugee”.
Gurnah grew up in Zanzibar, an island off the coast of Tanzania. In the late 1960s, Gurnah was forced to leave for England as a refugee, where he began to reflect on his experiences in a diary and then through stories. Through the years, he wrote 10 novels and stories that explore the suffering caused by war and colonialism. “The thing that motivated the whole experience of writing for me was this idea of losing your place in the world,” Gurnah told The New York Times.
His 1994 novel Paradise, which tells the story of a boy growing up in early 20th century Tanzania, marked his breakthrough as a novelist and won the Booker Prize. Afterlives, his most recent work, continues the narrative of Paradise and takes place during the period of German colonialism in Tanzania.
Before he retired, Gurnah, 73, was a professor of English and postcolonial literature at the University of Kent in England. Although Gurnah’s first language is Swahili, he adopted English as his literary language. His writing often contains traces of Arabic, Swahili and German, as well.
Anders Olsson, the chair of the Nobel committee, said that Gurnah “is widely recognized as one of the world’s more preeminent postcolonial writers”.
Ethiopian-American novelist Maaza Mengiste described Gurnah’s writings as being“like a gentle blade (刀刃) slowly moving in”.“He has written works that are absolutely unfearing and yet at the same time completely compassionate and full of hearts for people of East Africa,” Mengiste said. “He is writing stories that are often quiet stories of people who aren’t heard, but there’s insistence there that we listen.”
4. What are Gurnah’s works mainly about
A. The life of the people in Tanzania. B. Growth in an underdeveloped nation.
C. Experiences of living abroad. D. Effects of war and colonialism.
5. What can we know about Gurnah
A. He publishes his works in Arabic and Swahili.
B. He used to be a professor of law and literature.
C. He was inspired to write by his refugee experience.
D. He was not well-known until he won the Nobel Prize.
6. What does the underlined word “preeminent” in paragraph 5 probably mean
A. Awful. B. Potential. C. Outstanding. D. Particular.
7. What does Maaza Mengiste think of Gurnah’s writing
A. It is elegantly written in his native language.
B. It calls for attention to the life of the underclass.
C. It is powerful and employs sharp language.
D. It is widely welcomed by people around the world.

Concrete has served as the foundation stone of the construction industry for hundreds of years. However, the process of producing concrete is one of the most environmentally unfriendly processes in the world. In the process, not only is carbon dioxide released into the air by the energy used to heat the limestone, but the limestone itself also gives out a huge amount of the element.
Luckily, a number of start-ups throughout the world are using creative thinking to make the construction industry a whole lot more friendly for the planet.
A Canadian company called Carbon Cure, has found a way to inject concrete with carbon dioxide itself. Not only does this trap the carbon dioxide into the concrete, keeping it from running away into the atmosphere, but it also creates a super strong material called calcium carbonate, which reduces the total amount of concrete that needs to be used.
California-based Brimstone, is creating carbon-negative concrete by doing away with limestone entirely and instead using silicate rock, a material that does not release carbon dioxide when heated. Instead, the process produces magnesium(镁), which absorbs carbon dioxide, as the basis for their concrete.
Additionally, researchers at Australia’s RMIT University have recently released a study showing that adding coffee grounds instead of sand to concrete could make it much stronger, reducing both the amount of sand used, as well as the amount of concrete that would need to be used in the final product.
The biggest barrier at this point is convincing members of the industry that the new types of concrete are safe to be used, according to Stacy Smedley, director at a nonprofit focused on decarbonizing construction.
Hopefully these new solutions to the environmental problems of concrete will soon be widely adopted. Given the significant part the construction industry has in releasing carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, great improvements can be made when more environmentally friendly materials are used.
8. What is the environmental issue associated with traditional concrete production
A. The mass release of carbon dioxide. B. The high demand for energy.
C. The processing of waste materials. D. The use of non-renewable materials.
9. How does Carbon Cure deal with the environmental impact of concrete production
A. By using silicate rock as the basis.
B. By absorbing carbon dioxide with magnesium.
C. By replacing sand with coffee grounds.
D. By putting carbon dioxide into concrete.
10. According to Smedley, what is the major challenge facing these solutions
A. Difficulty in making profits.
B. Convincing the public of the convenience.
C. Lack of funding for research.
D. Removing the industry members’ safety concerns.
11. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A. To promote an alternative to concrete.
B. To advocate environmental protection.
C. To introduce new ways to produce concrete.
D. To emphasize the significance of creativity.

In the 19th century, an Arab physician known as Ibn Zuhr conducted some animal research to assess the surgical procedures that could be applicable to humans. Since then, animal testing has been considered to be the most efficient way to develop new drugs. New medical treatments and drugs are tested on animals first to determine their effectiveness or safety levels before they are finally tested on humans. However, it remains controversial whether it is morally right or wrong to use animals for medical or commercial experiments.
The use of animals for medical purposes is seen to be necessary by many scientists. Researchers usually begin their trials using rats. If the tests are successful, further tests are done on monkeys before using human beings. For testing, such tiered (分层的) rounds are important because it reduces the level of error and any negative side effects. Some argue that animal testing has contributed to many life-saving cures and treatments and that there is no adequate alternative to testing on a living, whole-body system. Moreover, there are regulations for animal testing that limit the misuse of animals during research, which serves as evidence that animals are well taken care of and treated well instead of being intentionally harmed.
However, some other experts and animal welfare groups have opposed such practice, terming it inhumane and claiming it should be banned. According to Humane Society International, animals used in experiments are commonly subjected to force-feeding, radiation exposure, operations to deliberately cause damage and frightening situations to create depression and anxiety. They also hold the view that animals are very different from human beings and therefore make poor test subjects. Drugs that pass animal tests are not necessarily safe. Animal tests on the arthritis(关节炎) drug Vioxx showed that it would have a protective effect on the hearts of mice, yet the drug went on to cause more than 27,000 heart attacks before being pulled from the market.
It’s safe to say that using animals for tests will continue to be debated in many years to come. Despite the benefits of animal testing, some of the animal welfare organizations’ concerns need to be addressed with adequate regulations to ensure that animals are treated humanely.
12. Why is animal testing considered necessary
A. Because other testing alternatives may not replace the need for animals.
B. Because animal testing has been in practice since the 19th century.
C. Because animal testing can spare humans any side effect.
D. Because rats are more like humans than monkeys.
13. What suffering do animals experience during experiments
A. Having unnecessary operations.
B. Eating poisonous food.
C. Being killed deliberately.
D. Breathing in polluted air.
14. What does the example Vioxx in Paragraph 3 tell us
A. Arthritis is hard to cure.
B. Some drugs need to be pulled from the shelves.
C. A drug should be tested many more times before its release.
D. Animal tests cannot necessarily produce accurate results.
15. What action will the author probably agree with
A. Experts try hard to determine whether animal tests are harmful.
B. Scientists reduce the number of animals used in research.
C. The authorities issue new law to guarantee animal rights during research.
D. Relevant organizations show more concern about the animals’ welfare.

第三部分 基础知识(共两节 满分25分)
第一节 语法填空 (共10小题;每小题1.5分,共15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
What did you have for dinner Tuesday night of last week If someone 51 (ask) you that question Wednesday morning, you would 52 (possible) have had no problem recalling what you had for dinner the night before.
But as days pass, the memories of all the other meals you 53 (eat) since then-start to interfere(干扰) with your memory of that one particular meal. This is a good example of 54 psychologists call the interference theory of forgetting. Forgetting is the result of 55 (vary) memories interfering with one another. The more, similar two or more events are 56 one another, the more likely interference will occur.
Getting rid of interference altogether is impossible, but there are a few things you can do to minimize its effects. One of the best things you can do is rehearse(排练) new information in order to better commit it to memory. In fact, many experts recommend over-learning important information, 57 involves rehearsing the material over and over again until it can be reproduced perfectly with no errors. Another strategy for fighting interference is to switch up your routine and avoid 58 (study similar material back to back. Sleep also plays an essential role in memory 59 form). Sleeping after you learn something new is 60 efficient way to turn new memories into lasting ones.

I was eight years old and wasn’t aware of all the arrangements being made for our journey as a family to London in 1950. My mother was in great pain and wished to visit specialists in London. My father reluctantly had to sell our property in Queensland. The day before we boarded the ship, Father unwillingly said goodbye to his five-year-old cattle dog, Spider, who was loved by us all. Father’s friend Sandy was to be his guardian while we were overseas, as he had been getting to know Spider for many weeks.
Six weeks later, an air-letter arrived from Sandy, giving my father the news that Spider had run away just two weeks after we had sailed. Sandy had advertised constantly on ABC radio and other regional newspapers. Despite many “sightings”, the dog was never found. It seems Spider just kept running and searching for us. As he was cattle dog, my father thought he would be shot or dingo-trapped, because of his appearance. But our family thought that Father held a secret hope that Spider was still alive.
We sailed back to Australia two years later and re-established our home. My father immediately began his own search for Spider. One cold winter’s Saturday morning eight months after our return, my father had a call from an elderly lady living on her own on the outskirts of the town. As she told my father on the telephone, it was “just glimpses of a dingo-type dog in the shadows” of her disused tennis court. That was enough for my father to interrupt my homework.
We set off in his blue and black Jensen car which he had brought back from England. It was hardly the right vehicle for the rough roads we travelled that day. Five and a half hours later, we found the run-down old property. Sadly, she told my father that the “dingo dog” hadn’t been around for a few days. My father had a strange look in his eye. He put two fingers to his lips and did his special whistle for Spider.
