The first time I realized that I had a love for sports competitions was during the Field Day in elementary school. Small for my age, and more of a bookworm than a sports lover, I had suffered that special humiliation of being picked last for various gym teams. The Field Day, which focused on individual skills, was different. In the Softball Throw event, I got my first taste of sporting victory. Credit goes to the example of my first coach, my father. He lifted weights every morning at home. He bought us all baseball gloves and hats, and in the warm months, we spent hours playing catch.
Once I got to sixth grade and switched to private school, our entire student body was assigned to either the Red or the White team. Throughout the year, we competed against each other in various games and exercises for points. I eventually became president of The Committee of Games. I also played on the field hockey team and the basketball team. And at home, playing tennis, skating, skiing and biking were simply normal things we did. During the break time, magazines were also quite popular for us teens. These regularly featured articles on physical exercise. Somehow, my college roommate and I took up the habit of completing Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) exercises every day, a practice that continued into my marriage, when we had no spare money to use to join a gym.
So, though it shocks some of our friends, that early foundation continued in adulthood into a sports and fitness focus, considered important even on vacation. I still love reading and the arts, too. As far as I’m concerned, life is the richest with my feet in both worlds.
4. What does the underlined word “humiliation” mean in Paragraph 1
A. Stress. B. Threat. C. Shame. D. Glory.
5. According to the author, what contributes to her victory in the Softball Throw event
A. Her confidence in her sports skills. B. The efforts she put into exercising.
C. Her advanced sports gloves and hats. D. The strong influence of her father.
6. What happened after the author stepped into adulthood
A. She changed the focus into reading. B. She stuck to working out.
C. She regularly exercised on weekends. D. She joined Royal Canadian Air Force.
7. What is the author’s purpose in writing the text
A To express her love for sports. B. To show her father’s guidance on sports.
C. To stress the advantages of physical exercise. D. To share her childhood memories about sports.

Adults with a poor education are also likely to have poor health, a growing body of evidence suggests. Study after study has confirmed the link, and now experts are zeroing in on the reasons for it and what can be done. “People with higher education tend to have better jobs, better income, and better benefits,” said David R. Williams, a professor of public health in America.
Those benefits, he said, go beyond health benefits to include such other factors as the flexibility to take a day off or part of a day to see a doctor. “People with higher levels of education tend to have more resources to cope with stress and life,” Williams said. “They have stress, of course, but also more resources to cope with it—such as access to a health club to exercise away the stress—than people with less education,” he said.
“Being better educated also means that a person is more likely to understand the world of modern medicine,” said Erik Angner, an assistant professor of philosophy and economics at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, who has researched the link between education and happiness. “Modern medicine is incredibly complex. And if you lack the basic reading skills required to function adequately in the health-care environment, you might find it hard to effectively understand your medical care.”
A report issued by Williams’ commission found that, compared with college graduates, adults who did not graduate from high school were 2.5 times as likely to be in less than very good health. The report suggested that factors outside the medical system play an important role in determining people’s health. Access to medical care is crucial, but it isn’t enough to improve health. What’s needed, they suggested, is increased focus on schools and education—encouraging people to obtain more education.
8. Which of the following can be the best title for the text
A. Poor Education May Lead to Poor Health
B. Higher Education Can Bring More Income
C. Happiness Comes from Good Education
D. Medical Care Safeguards Good Health
9. What does “zeroing in on” in Paragraph 1 probably mean
A. get rid of B. remove from C. cope with D. pay attention to
10. What can we learn from Angner’s words
A. Better education means understanding the world better.
B. The modern medicine world is too difficult to understand.
C. People with a good education may be happier.
D. Reading skills help in understanding medical care.
11. What is stressed in the report issued by Williams’ commission
A. Adults are less likely to have good health.
B. The medical system determines people’s health.
C. More education is needed to improve people’s health.
D. More access to medical care is important.

Every order of takeout comes with a side of single-use plastics and each plastic fork. knife, spoon and straw-whether or not you wanted it or used it-ends up in the trash.
New research found that 139 million metric tons of single-use plastic waste was generated in 2021-six million metric tons more single-use plastics compared to 2019. A hunger for takeout meals during the pandemic contributed to the surge.
An estimated 60% of Americans order takeout or delivery at least once a week and online ordering is growing 300% faster than in-house dining; that means millions of single-use plastic utensils (餐具) are going out with every order.
New laws aim to address the problem. Some of the recent bills are thanks to The National Reuse Network, part of the environmental nonprofit Upstream, which launched a national Skip the Stuff campaign to work out policies that require restaurants to include single-use plastic utensils, straws, and napkins only when customers request them.
The bills also require meal delivery and online apps like Uber Eats, GrubHub and Door Dash to add single-use extras to their menus; customers can choose the items and quantities to have them included in the order. Customers that don’t order the single-use plastics won’t receive them. The goal of the bills is to reduce the 40 billion plastic utensils sent to the landfill (垃圾填埋场) every year.
“Most of the time, people are taking food home or to their offices where there are reusable utensils so these utensils wind up in a drawer or get thrown out,” says Alexis Goldsmith, national organizing director for a nationwide project Beyond Plastics. “Some people do need utensils, but for the most part, they’re not needed.”
To date, Skip the Stuff bills have been passed in several cities, including Denver, Washington, D.C. and Chicago, California and Washington state passed statewide bills that make single-use plastic “accessories” available with takeout orders only upon request.
Organizations like Upstream, Beyond plastics and NRDC have created toolkits to help additional communities launch their own Skip the Stuff campaigns.
12. What does the underlined word “surge” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Great desire. B. Sharp decline. C. Rapid increase. D. Obvious panic.
13. According to the Skip the Stuff campaign, what can be done by restaurants
A. Choosing green products. B. Adding single-use napkins.
C. Recycling and reusing utensils. D. Providing utensils only on request.
14. What’s the purpose of the recent new bills
A. To reduce plastic waste. B. To stop bad eating habits.
C. To encourage people to eat out. D. To better the dining environment.
15. What would Goldsmith probably think of the Skip the Stuff campaign
A. Unimportant. B. Damaging. C. Much-needed. D. Well-known.

My story started one autumn morning, at the bend on a path.
I was 13 years old, and was on the way to school. It was the first time I had caught sight of a fox. Fascinated to the point that I forgot all fear, I dared to go up to it. I had never come so close to a wild animal. There was nobody else around, only me and the fox.
“Hey, fox!” I tried to greet it, though my voice was so weak that it felt like I was saying hello to myself. It didn’t hear me. It stayed there and I watched it. My heart was beating flat out. It was so cute. For a moment, I thought I might be able to touch it.
Throughout the day at school, I could only think of the fox at the big beech (山毛榉) tree. At my return to the place where we met, I was sure I’d find it there.
And I did. This time I gathered a little bit more courage and called out to it, “Fox!” Of course it escaped. But that only made me long to meet it again. I decided that if I could find its kennel (洞) and catch it, I would try and tame (驯服) it, making it my friend.
Thus, I spent most of my free time in the forests trying to find the fox during the following months. But I never saw it again before winter came. During the winter, I followed its footprints far across the fields. Suddenly I was alarmed by the howling of wolves near me. I ran away frightened, stumbled and hurt my ankle. It healed very slowly, so that I had to stay at home during the winter, reading a book about animals of the forest and foxes.
When spring arrived, I was free again. I looked for fox kennels and waited for my fox. To my amazement, it had got young ones but kept moving because of my observations; therefore I decided to observe the fox from a longer distance.

12 What does the underlined word “surge” in paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Great desire. B. Sharp decline. C. Rapid increase. D. Obvious panic.
13. According to the Skip the Stuff campaign, what can be done by restaurants
A. Choosing green products. B. Adding single-use napkins.
C. Recycling and reusing utensils. D. Providing utensils only on request.
14. What’s the purpose of the recent new bills
A. To reduce plastic waste. B. To stop bad eating habits.
C. To encourage people to eat out. D. To better the dining environment.

第二节(满分25分)
47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

Paragraph 1:
Finally, it would let me get close.
_________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
To my surprise, the day after I took it home, it fled.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Finally, it would let me get close. One day, as I sat quietly under the shade of a tree, the fox cautiously approached, its bright and soft eyes fixed on me. I held my breath, not wanting to startle the little creature. As it came closer, I could see the trust in its eyes, and I knew that it had got accustomed to my presence and that our bond had deepened. Over time, I was able to bring it food and even stroke its fur and occasionally, it would huddle peacefully against me as we sat on the green grass, like two old friends. And just like what I’d do to an old friend who seemed to need help, I took it home, thinking I could better take care of it and we could better enjoy each other’s company.
To my surprise, the day after I took it home, it fled. It jumped out of an open window and in no time vanished into the woods. As I watched it slip away, with a nimbleness and grace that was a joy to behold, darting through the underbrush with a fluidity that spoke of its wild nature, I suddenly realized that perhaps the wild called to it more strongly than I ever could. I should never have tried to keep it as a tame pet, because wild creatures were supposed to be roaming in their own home, rather than being confined in mine. I didn’t see it then — not even with the help of that book about foxes, but now, on looking back, I know that my self-acclaimed “love” for it was not love at all, but possession.
