WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CAR RENTAL IN CANADA
When you fly into Canada you don’t have many choices. A car is often the only way to reach the spectacular destinations which Canada is famous for. Most major car rental companies have offices at airports, towns and cities across the country.
What do you need in order to rent a car in Canada
·Valid Driver’s license and International Driver’s Permit if your license is not in English or French.
·When picking up your car, you may have to show your passport and a return airline ticket.
·Credit Card for the deposit-renting a car in Canada without a credit card is impossible.
Fly-Drive Packages from Home
You may get the best deal on car rental if you book a fly-drive package from home or if you book a long time in advance. Rental cost varies greatly, depending on the time of year, type of vehicle and length of rental.
Minimum Age
The driver has to be at least 21 years old and have a minimum of 12 months of driving experience in order to rent a car in Canada. A “Young Renter Fee” will be applied to your car rental if you are between the ages of 21 and 24 and will be charged on top of the rental rate.
Insurance (保险)
Most car rental companies in Canada offer a collision damage waiver (CDW) for an additional charge. Some credit card companies include CDW insurance on car rentals when you use their cards to pay for the rental. Check your credit card’s terms and conditions.
Fuel and Service Stations
Most rental cars use unleaded gas. Remember, driving distances in Canada are long and a large amount of your vacation cost will go towards gas. Filling up in larger cities is usually cheaper than in small towns. If you are heading up to the Northwest Territories, gas prices will be much higher than in the south.
Cross-Border Travel
Some rental companies don’t allow their cars to drive across borders, like from Canada to the US or across provinces. If this is the case, watch out; GPS may be used to track your route.
21. In which situation do you need to pay extra fees for your car rental in Canada
A. You book a fly-drive package from home. B. You have no passport or return airline ticket.
C. You are 22 with one-year driving experience. D. You use a credit card offering CDW insurance.
22. What are you encouraged to do when you rent a car in Canada
A. Use GPS to find your way. B. Provide a license in English.
C. Fill up the car in large cities. D. Drive across borders to America.
23. On which website can you most probably find the passage
A. www. B. www.

J. K. Rowling frequently shows there is magic every day. Her Harry Potter series has helped people through times of stress and depression and she is always there to deliver wise words of encouragement.
She is one celebrity who is very active on Twitter. So when a single dad named Matt Burke sent her a message thanking her for the series, she noticed. Her series had helped strengthen his relationship with his 9 year old daughter Bailey.
He included a link to his article titled Being a Broke Parent. He explained how he hadn’t found a level of financial stability that allowed him to pay bills on time and take his daughter on more activities and events. The family also doesn’t have the Internet or TV, which means there’s no “digital babysitter” and he has to rely on his own creative ways to bond with his daughter. Since he received the series, the main thing that has occupied them these days is reading books together.
Burke admits that he thought he was “too cool” for the books when they first came out and he was in his twenties, but he’s loving reading them now. “We switch off chapter by chapter reading them out loud,“Burke explains.” This not only allows her to get more used to reading aloud in front of someone, but it gets me directly involved in something she loves, and it gives me the chance to be very dramatic when I read my chapters and bring myself into the characters in the book, which has proven to be a ton of fun.”
After hearing Burke’s story, Rowling said how honored she was when Harry Potter was a part of his family’s life and offered Burke more books. Besides, people are also offering to send Burke more books as gifts. For Burke, this experience, far more than gifts, will be what he treasures.
24. Why did Burke thank J. K. Rowling according to the text
A. She guided him how to write a good story.
B. She encouraged him when he was in trouble.
C. Her books helped him through times of confusion.
D. Her books helped him improve his bond with his daughter.
25. What is implied in Burke’s words in paragraph 4
A. He has found it interesting to read the series. B. He was too old to understand the series better.
C. He has chosen a better way of reading the series. D. He hopes to play a role in the drama in the future.
26. Which word can best describe Burke’s experience according to the text
A. Useless. B. Normal. C. Valuable. D. Boring.
27. What is the main idea of this text
A. J. K. Rowling chooses to help improve kids’ health.
B. J. K. Rowling gives a magical gift to a single father.
C. J. K. Rowling has a deep influence on others’ growth.
D. Burke comes to know J. K. Rowling through her series.

和“This not only allows her to get more used to reading aloud in front of someone, but it gets me directly involved in something she loves, and it gives me the chance to be very dramatic when I read my chapters and bring myself into the characters in the book, which has proven to be a ton of fun. 故选A。

C
When continent splits occur, they usually leave traces in ancient rocks, fossils, and mountain ranges. However, around 155 million years ago, when a 5,000-kilometer land broke away from Western Australia and began its drift, it only left behind a basin deep below the ocean known as the Argo Abyssal Plain and scientists have been unable to find where this lost continent, Argoland, disappeared to until now.
The seabed structure suggests that the continent drifted northwestward, potentially towards present-day Southeast Asia. But surprisingly, there is no large continent hidden beneath those islands, only small continental fragments. Using this theory, geologists discovered that Argoland hadn’t really disappeared but survived as a “very extended and fragmented collection” under the islands to the east of Indonesia. Unlike other continents like Africa and South America, which broke neatly into two pieces, Argoland split into many smaller fragments that were dispersed (分散的). With advanced technology and the discovery, scientists can now piece them together.
Tracing the continents is vital for understanding processes like the evolution of biodiversity. It could help explain something known as the mysterious Wallace Line, which is an imaginary boundary that separates mammals, birds, and even early human species in Southeast Asian islands. The boundary has puzzled scientists for long because it clearly separates the island’s wildlife. To the west of the line are mammals like apes and elephants. But these are almost completely absent to the east, where you can find marsupials and cockatoos — animals typically associated with Australia. Researchers have theorized that this may be because Argoland carried its own wildlife away from Australia before it crashed into Southeast Asia, which helps explain why different species are found on one land.
The story of Argoland is not one of complete disappearance but of transformation. As the world continues to evolve, this lost continent serves as a powerful symbol of the fragility (脆弱性) of life on this planet, and a reminder of the importance of respecting and protecting the world that we live in.
28. What is Argoland
A. It is a basin deep below the ocean in Western Australia.
B. It is a large continent hidden beneath the islands of Southeast Asia.
C. It is a new land emerging from under the islands to the east of Indonesia.
D. It is a fragmented continent drifting from Western Australia to Southeast Asia.
29. Why is Wallace Line mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To introduce an imaginary boundary.
B. To support the assumed theory of the lost continent.
C. To show different species in Southeast Asian islands.
D. To explain the reason why scientists are puzzled about the boundary.
30. All of the following are the significance of this new discovery EXCEPT that ________.
A. it warns us to protect our planet.
B. it shows the creatures on earth are fragile.
C. it reminds us of the power of human activities.
D. it explains the biodiversity in Southeast Asian islands.
31. What is the main idea of this passage
A. The mystery of a lost continent has been unfolded.
B. The fragments of Indonesia have been pieced together.
C. The formation of the Argo Abyssal Plain has been discovered.
D. The evolution of species in Southeast Asian islands has been traced.
D 29. B 30. C 31. A
根据第一段“However, around 155 million years ago, when a 5,000-kilometer land broke away from Western Australia and began its drift, it only left behind a basin deep below the ocean known as the Argo Abyssal Plain and scientists have been unable to find where this lost continent, Argoland, disappeared to until now (然而,大约在1.55亿年前,当一块5000公里的土地从西澳大利亚断裂并开始漂移时,它只留下了一个深海中的盆地,即众所周知的阿尔戈深渊平原,科学家们直到现在才找到这个失踪的大陆——阿尔戈兰的去向)”以及第二段“Using this theory, geologists discovered that Argoland hadn’t really disappeared but survived as a “very extended and fragmented collection” under the islands to the east of Indonesia. Unlike other continents like Africa and South America, which broke neatly into two pieces, Argoland split into many smaller fragments that were dispersed(利用这一理论,地质学家发现阿尔戈兰并没有真正消失,而是作为“非常延伸和分散的集合”存活在印度尼西亚东部的岛屿之下。
根据第三段“Tracing the continents is vital for understanding processes like the evolution of biodiversity. But these are almost completely absent to the east, where you can find marsupials and cockatoos—animals typically associated with Australia
根据最后一段“The story of Argoland is not one of complete disappearance but of transformation. As the world continues to evolve, this lost continent serves as a powerful symbol of the fragility (脆弱性) of life on this planet, and a reminder of the importance of respecting and protecting the world that we live in(阿戈尔兰的故事并不是完全消失的故事,而是转变的故事。随着世界的不断发展,这个失落的大陆成了地球上生命脆弱性的强大象征,并提醒我们要尊重和保护我们生活的世界)”可知,本文强调了Argoland大陆的故事是一个关于转变而非完全消失的故事,并且这个失落的大陆成为了地球上生命脆弱性的强大象征,提醒我们尊重和保护我们所居住的世界的重要性。这里提到的是对地球和生命本身的尊重与保护,而不是人类活动的力量。由此可知,C项“it reminds us of the power of human activities(它提醒我们人类活动的力量)”表述错误,故选C项。
根据第一段“However, around 155 million years ago, when a 5,000-kilometer land broke away from Western Australia and began its drift, it only left behind a basin deep below the ocean known as the Argo Abyssal Plain and scientists have been unable to find where this lost continent, Argoland, disappeared to until now(然而,大约1.55亿年前,一块长达5000公里的陆地从西澳大利亚脱离并开始漂移,它只留下了位于海洋深处的阿戈深海平原盆地,而科学家们直到现在还无法找到这块失落的大陆——阿戈尔兰消失到了哪里)”、第二段“Unlike other continents like Africa and South America, which broke neatly into two pieces, Argoland split into many smaller fragments that were dispersed(与其他大陆如非洲和南美洲不同,它们整齐地分成两块,而阿戈尔兰则分裂成许多较小的碎片,四散分开)”、第三段“Researchers have theorized that this may be because Argoland carried its own wildlife away from Australia before it crashed into Southeast Asia, which helps explain why different species are found on one land(研究人员推测,这可能是因为阿戈尔兰在撞击东南亚之前,就已经将自己的野生动物从澳大利亚带走,这有助于解释为什么在同一块土地上会发现不同的物种)”以及第四段“The story of Argoland is not one of complete disappearance but of transformation(阿戈尔兰的故事并不是完全消失的故事,而是转变的故事)”可知,本文主要讲的是关于一个失落的大陆的神秘面纱被揭开。

Nowadays, the world is slowly becoming a high-tech society and we are now surrounded by technology. Facebook and Twitter are innovative tools; text messaging is still a somewhat existing phenomenon and even e-mail is only a flashing spot on the screen when compared with our long history of snail mail. Now we adopt these tools to the point of essentialness, and only rarely consider how we are more fundamentally affected by them.
Social media, texting and e-mail all make it much easier to communicate, gather and pass information. But they also present some dangers. By removing any real human engagement, they enable us to develop our abnormal self-love without the risk of disapproval or criticism theatrical metaphor (隐喻), these new forms of communication provide a stage on which we create our own characters, hidden behind a fourth wall of tweets, status updates and texts. This unreal state of unconcern can become addictive as we separate ourselves a safe distance from the cruelty of our fleshly lives, where we are imperfect, powerless and insignificant. In essence, we have been provided not only the means to be more free, but also to become new, to create and protect a more perfect self to the world. As we become more reliant on these tools, they become more a part of our daily routine and so we become more restricted in this fantasy.
So it is that we live in a cold era, where names and faces represent two different levels of closeness, where working relationships occur only through the magic of email and where love can start or end by text message. An environment such as this reduces interpersonal relationships to mere digital exchanges.
Would a celebrity have been so daring to do something dishonorable if he had had to do it in person Doubtful. It seems he might have been lost in a fantasy world that ultimately convinced himself into believing the digital self could obey different rules and regulations, as if he could continually push the limits of what’s acceptable without facing the consequences of “real life.”
32. The author compares e-mail with snail mail to show ________.
A. the influence of high-tech on our life B. the history of different types of mails
C. the value of traditional communications D. the rapid development of social media
33. What can we know about new communication tools
A. Destroying our life totally. B. Posing more dangers than good.
C. Helping us to hide our faults. D. Replacing traditional letters.
34. What is the potential threat caused by the novel communication tools
A. Sheltering us from virtual life. B. Removing face-to-face interaction.
C. Leading to false mental perception. D. Making us rely more on hi-tech media.
35. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs
A. Technologies have changed our relationships.
B. The digital world is a recipe for pushing limits.
C. Love can be better conveyed by text message.
D The digital self need not take responsibility.
A 33. C 34. C 35. A

根据第二段“By removing any real human engagement, they enable us to develop our abnormal self-love without the risk of disapproval or criticism theatrical metaphor (隐喻), these new forms of communication provide a stage on which we create our own characters, hidden behind a fourth wall of tweets, status updates and texts. (通过消除任何真正的人类参与,它们使我们能够发展出异常的自爱,而不会有遭到反对或批评的风险。这些新的交流形式提供了一个舞台,我们可以在这个舞台上创造自己的角色,隐藏在推特、状态更新和文本这些看不到的墙后面)”可知,新的通讯工具让我们更容易隐藏真实的自己并且维持一个更完美的自己,由此可推出它们在一定程度上帮助我们隐藏了自己的不足。故选C项。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。由文章最后一段“It seems he might have been lost in a fantasy world that ultimately convinced himself into believing the digital self could obey different rules and regulations, as if he could continually push the limits of what’s acceptable without facing the consequences of ‘real life.’(他似乎迷失在一个幻想世界中,最终说服自己相信数字自我可以遵守不同的规则和条例,就好像他可以在不面临‘现实生活’后果的情况下不断突破可接受的极限) ”可知,新型通讯工具会让人们可能陷入一种虚拟世界而逐渐忘记自己的现实生活,这种错误的认知可能会导致人们对自己的行为和决策产生误导,做出一些不合理的事情。
由文章第三段“So it is that we live in a cold era, where names and faces represent two different levels of closeness, where working relationships occur only through the magic of email and where love can start or end by text message. 【答案】Can My Public Image Fall Apart
My public image is that of a diligent student and a responsible team player. I strive to maintain this image by consistently performing well academically and actively participating in school activities.
However, I believe that my public image can indeed fall apart. No one is perfect, and we all make mistakes. If I were to behave in a way that contradicts my established image, it would naturally collapse. This is not something to fear, as it provides an opportunity for growth and self-reflection. What’s important is to learn from our mistakes, adapt, and strive to rebuild a more authentic and sustainable image.
Therefore, while I aim to uphold my current public image, I am also open to the possibility of its fallibility.

“I’ll bet Anjali knows. Right, Anjali Why don’t you show us since you’re the star student,” Deepak taunted (奚落).
Anjali was confused. She wasn’t trying to show off. She was just playing tabla (印度塔不拉鼓), like everyone else. And why was Deepak being so mean lately Is it because tabla is a boy’s thing She didn’t care that people thought it was a boys’ instrument. Anjali knew there was no such thing. She danced her fingers across the tabla to perform the composition in confusion. “Ugh!” Anjali heard someone groan, and she stopped playing.
“I guess I don’t know it that well after all,” Anjali said sheepishly to the teacher, Mr. Zakir. Her stomach was doing flip-flops. That wasn’t true. Not even a little. Mr. Zakir’s eyes narrowed. He looked like he was about to say something, but changed his mind. “The recital (演奏会) is next week, everyone. Keep practicing. I will be announcing who will get to perform onstage with me at my next concert!” Anjali had dreamed of a moment like that. She wanted to win the opportunity, but she needed to sort things straight with Deepak first.
As the class was dismissed, Anjali hurried over to Deepak. When she finally made eye contact with him, he purposely looked away and walked off. The next day at school, Anjali overheard Deepak whispering to Mary. “People are only interested because she’s the only girl in tabla class and they want her to feel special. She’s not that good—” Anjali was furious. She excused herself and went to the bathroom. She took some deep breaths but couldn’t relax. Her heart was pounding:
“It’s not my fault that people make a big deal about a girl playing tabla. I make mistakes too, but I work really hard. Maybe he should too. He should be less mean and practice more.”
“If I play in this concert, no one will talk to me again. He will turn everyone against me.”
“I don’t want to see a tabla or hear a tabla or play a tabla EVER AGAIN!!” Anjali yelled at the mirror. It was quiet for a moment. She believed it was one of her darkest days ever.

One Possible Version
Paragraph 1:
Stepping out of the bathroom, Anjali saw some inspiring posters on the wall. One of them illustrated with several instruments and a quote “Never dim your light.” For that very moment, Anjali thought about how she was mesmerized the first time she saw someone playing tabla, by the beautiful sounds he was creating with his hands. She knew that tabla was meant for her. When the day of the recital finally arrived, Anjali was determined to do her very best, regardless of the outcome. She was not going to let anyone make her feel bad, whether it was for being good at something or for being a girl. And as expected, she delivered a flawless performance.
Paragraph 2:
After the recital, Deepak walked up to Anjali. “Very impressive.” He remarked awkwardly that he was just jealous because tabla should be a boy’s instrument. Anjali shrugged, “You know there is no such thing.” As Anjali took one last look at the stage, she felt such a relief. Under the spotlight was the set of tabla, glittering on the stage just as she did a few minutes earlier. Among countless compliments and congratulations from the audience, Anjali heard a little sweet voice, “Bravo, Anjali!!” She turned to find a little girl looking up at her. “I didn’t know girls could play tabla,” she said. “Girls can do everything boys do,” Anjali beamed, “Never dim your light”.

A. Useless. B. Normal. C. Valuable. D. Boring.

A. J. K. Rowling chooses to help improve kids’ health.
B. J. K. Rowling gives a magical gift to a single father.
C. J. K. Rowling has a deep influence on others’ growth.
D. Burke comes to know J. K. Rowling through her series.

D. The digital self need not take responsibility.
