During meal times, more and more young people take out their phones, choose a favorite show, eat while watching and burst into laughter now and then.
Liu, a 19-year-old student studying in Beijing, is one of them. A foodie and a video lover, she is happy to eat while watching food programs on her smartphone. A show she has been recently watching is about two Chinese girls traveling around Japan to find delicious food, and the show has been viewed more than 26,000 times on China’s top microblog platform. “The food in the show looks really attractive,” Liu explains. Besides this show, she also watches many other online food programs.
“It’s not unexpected,” said Adrien from France, who is a huge fan of Chinese food. “China and France are both keen on(热衷于)cooking and eating. As for me, I love Chinese food programs very much.”
Irina from Russia also loves Chinese food programs very much. She watched a reality show with her friends. In the show, some Chinese stars cooked seafood and crabs. “They cooked the seafood differently from us, but the dish they made looked very delicious,” said Irina and her friends.
Beautiful pictures, delicious food, special skills of cooking and the famous stars—all these things can make food programs a perfect meal companion(陪伴)for younger Chinese people, even when they are far away from home.
“After I left China and started my study life in Germany, I found myself always watching A bite of China during supper,” said Manling. She added that she had only been living there for only two months and she had already missed the home flavor(味道)of China. “Chinese flavors are like the comfort zone(区域)that gives me a sense of safety,” Manling said.

‘Going for a walk’ is a popular pastime(消遣,娱乐) among older and younger generations alike because of its well-known benefits for our physical and mental health. But you may be surprised to hear that walking through pretty streets or hiking along mountainous ridges have not always been considered leisure activities (休闲活动), according to Daniel Gale, a researcher of pedestrianism (徒步主义).
He says that in Britain, walking for fun “wasn’t really a thing” until the 1780s. Before that, it was just something people did when necessary, and some people even connected it with criminal activity. But for Charles Dickens, the famous English 19th Century author, walking through London streets and long distance walking around the countryside was a big part of the creative process; a time to think about what was going on around him. He walked at an impressive speed of four miles per hour, according to his biography by Peter Ackroyd.
But if speed-walking isn’t your thing, perhaps you can learn from another big-thinking
wanderer--19th Century American writer Henry David Thoreau. He took a slower way, preferring to hang out over hills, fields and through the woods. He said that he could not keep his health and spirits, unless he spent four hours a day walking at least.
This idea of taking a walk to make your mind clear has continued to the 21st century, but has the etiquette of pedestrians(步行者) remained the same An article in 1780 for the London Magazine advised pedestrians to avoid things like hanging around while talking and getting in the way of people behind you. Nowadays, we could probably add distracted (思想不集中的) phone-users to that list.
In this modern age, when many of us are tied to our desks and to our screens, the simple act of stepping out onto the city sidewalks, or getting lost in nature, may make all the difference to our well-being. Whether you see yourself more as a casual walker or a purposeful pedestrian, why not develop a habit out of it
61. Why is going for a walk a popular pastime

62. Before people walked for fun, what was walking connected with

63. How is Henry David Thoreau’s way to walking different from Charles Dickens’s

There is a saying, “He who has never been to the Great Wall is not a true man.” It describes the big challenge of making a journey to the Great Wall. It also tells people not to give up. British brothers James and Thomas Lindesay, aged 28 and 21, know the saying very well. And last year, the two brothers spent months running along the Great Wall.
The pair set off from the Jiayuguan in Gansu Province on July 15. It took the two 131 days of running and walking along the main west-to-east length of the Great Wall to reach the Shanhaiguan on November 22. Their Great Wall journey covered 3,263 kilometers. They are the first known brothers, and Thomas the youngest person, to succeed in running the wall in one journey.
The two brothers’ love for the Great Wall is from their father, William Lindesay. William once ran along the wall 35 years ago. He has devoted (奉献) more than 30 years of his life to visiting, studying and protecting the wall. And his action influenced his two sons. They spent most of their weekends walking, taking photos and picking up rubbish from the Great Wall.
Compared to their father’s journey, the brothers’ trip was helped by advanced (先进的) tools like GPS watches and digital maps. However, it was still not easy for the two to do that. They had to go through bad weather and even illnesses. Finally, they completed their trip.
This experience gave the brothers a deeper understanding of the Great Wall and the history behind it. For the two, it is not enough to just go to the Great Wall; they must also love and protect it.
61. Translate the saying about the Great Wall into Chinese.
62. What did James and Thomas do last year
63. Who influenced James and Thomas to love the Great Wall
64. What have James and Thomas learned from their trip

My 100 Days Without a Mobile Phone
When was the last time you left home without your mobile phone Can you imagine yourself living a month, or even a year without checking your mobile phone from time to time
As a busy modern person with lots of social connections, plans and responsibilities, I just cannot afford to not be in touch with the rest of the world. Staying connected to other people is a big part of my life. However, sometimes it can be bothered (恼人的).
One day I discovered I was terribly tired out. I tried turning notices off. But the fear of missing out something important made me check the phone more often than before. So, I simply stopped using my phone.
Well, to tell the truth, it was not simple at all. For the first couple of days, I had a big fear that all of my friends would soon forget about me. When I had a free moment, I had no idea what to get myself distracted (分心的) with, and the worries mixed with boredom (无聊) kept bothering me.
However, after three weeks without a mobile phone, I started noticing changes — changes which I liked, and which drove me to not just continue the experiment, but in fact to organize some of my habits again.
First of all, I noticed that I became much more focused (专注的). Before, while doing something, I would often find myself wondering what was going on online. After a month of staying away from my mobile phone, I found that the urge (冲动) was already not so strong and that my ability to focus improved.
I discovered that the world is a beautiful place. Before, I would look at it through my camera mostly: take a photo, post it, get some likes. Now, I saw beautiful people walking around and I felt the seasons change. I could understand the actual beauty of the world, and I did not need anyone else to prove the value of this beauty through likes or shares.
Now, as 100 days have passed, I can say that the experiment was worth it. I am planning to stay away from my phone for as long as possible.

You may have seen such a photo: with a long white beard (胡子) and wearing a bamboo hat, an old fisherman stands on a boat. Huang Quande looked like this when tourists took photos with him on the Lijiang River in Guilin, Guangxi. He became so famous online that many believed the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan renminbi banknote (币) was based on him. Sadly, Huang passed away at the age of 94 on Feb 18, 2023.
Huang gave up fishing and became a photo model in 2008. He showed the true spirit of Lijiang River—being positive (积极的) and friendly. In his 90s, Huang could still move his boat with speed.
The image of the fisherman on the back of the 20-yuan banknote is not just about one man. Instead, it is a cultural symbol of Guilin landscape (风景), commented Guangming Daily.
In fact, the different backsides of the fifth series of renminbi banknotes show the most iconic (标志性的) landscapes in China. Each of them carries its own cultural value. For example, on the back of the5-yuan banknote is Mount Tai in Shandong. In ancient times, many emperors would go there and pray (祈祷) for the country. On the back of the 1-yuan banknote are the Three Pools Mirroring the Moon (三潭映月) in West Lake, Zhejiang. It is a great place for moon watchers during Mid-Autumn Festival.
Because of the renminbi pictures, these places have attracted more tourists than before. Following the banknotes from 1 yuan to 100, Pan Jinyu from Chongqing had a “banknote tour” when he was 21. “I want to finish a ceremonial (有仪式感的) journey and feel the beauty of our country.” Pan told Chongqing Economic Times.

Why is the sea salt Long before we discovered scientific ways of thinking about it, we explained it in a story. Even though the answer isn’t scientific, it holds some other truth in it—especially about the human heart.
Long ago, a poor old couple lived on the coast. One day, an old storyteller came to their village. The old couple gave him a meal. In return, he gave them a coffee mill (磨粉机) and said, " Say ' Mill , please grind (磨粉)', and it ' ll make whatever you want, to stop it, say 'Mill, please cease (停止)grinding '."
Soon the old couple had a much better life. They'd been happy people, and they didn't need much more. But the young couple next door were very greedy(贪婪的) and they were never satisfied. When they saw the old couple wearing good clothes and buying good food, they burnt with envy(羡慕). So one day the young husband went to the old couple's house secretly and heard, " Mill, please grind hot chocolate!" He was surprised to see it coming out.
Then the young couple stole the mill from the old couple. With it, they rode a horse and set off down the coast, where no one would know them. Along the way, the husband showed proudly and asked, "What do you want it to make " "Oh, I don't know. Why not salt " the wife said. "Mill, please grind salt!" he said." It works!" the wife shouted. But then they noticed the salt went everywhere. "Make it stop," the wife said. But the husband didn't know how. "Mill, please stop grinding! Please, no more!" His words didn't work. The mill kept grinding. Finally, the young husband threw the mill into the sea as far as he could.
And there it's been, for hundreds of years, endlessly grinding salt.

Most of us compare ourselves with parisons can help to make decisions and make us active. According to a study, 12% of our daily thoughts have something to do with making comparisons.
Why is it so easy to compare yourself with others
Whether it’s the number of goals you’ve scored at football or how many books you’ve read, it’s easy to compare yourself with someone else. Scientists say it’s a natural behavior. Humans live in a circle and do something in common, but they act differently and get the results more or less. Although comparing can be good for you, it’s not always helpful and you can find yourself stuck in a comparison trap (陷阱). This is when you always compare yourself with others and base (建立) your feelings on how well they seem to be doing.
Can comparisons be good for you
Comparisons can make us feel good and bad about ourselves. “Comparing up” means seeing someone do better than you and using that to inspire (激励) yourself to make higher goals and try harder. “Comparing down” is when you see someone who doesn’t seem to be doing as well as you. It can stop you from wanting to improve.
Get out of the comparison trap.
Notice how people make you feel and spend time with friends who celebrate your strengths rather than compare themselves with you. If you follow social media accounts (账号) that make you feel you are failing in any way, stop following them. The best person you can compete with is yourself. Here are some tips for making healthy comparisons.

Do you remember the dodo This big, quiet bird lived only in Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean. It did not fly, but it was not in danger from other animals there. So it was not afraid. Then humans came to Mauritius and the animals they brought like dogs killed dodos. Humans also cut down trees and destroyed the birds’ homes. And some of them hunted dodos — not for food, but because they liked hunting. By about 1680, the last dodo was dead. This happened a long time ago, but we cannot forget the dodo and we are never going to see a dodo alive again.
Animals became extinct before there were humans. But after the first people arrived in America, 73 percent of the big animals in North America and 80 percent in South America disappeared. In Australia 90 percent of big animals disappeared after people moved there from Asia about 50,000 years ago. Did people kill them all Perhaps not, we do not know. But they did die.
Can animals and humans live in the world together Can we help Some people help in important ways. Dian Fossey went to Central Africa because she was interested in mountain gorillas. Mountain gorillas are big animals with long arms and long black hair. She called on a lot of people to protect these animals and started the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund. She was very famous after she wrote her book Gorillas in the Mist. Dian’s work helped the gorillas, and now the number of mountain gorillas is slowly going up.
Not everyone can make big changes to the world, but small changes by a lot of people help. The World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) works in 100 countries. You can give money or buy from their shops. You can also make changes to your life. For example, you can walk to work or school or go by bicycle. Or other people can go with you in your car and leave their cars at home. Perhaps you can change and eat other food instead of meat. Perhaps ...

Chopsticks originated from(起源于) China. Though simple and little, they are a great invention in the history of humans. There are many legends(传说) about chopsticks, Da Yu and Chopsticks is one of them.
It is said that during Yao and Shun times, Shun ordered Yu to control the flood. One day, Yu took a boat to an island, and he was so hungry that he used an earth pot to cook meat. After the meat was well-done in boiled water, he didn’t want to waste time to wait for it to cool, so he took two branches (树枝) to pick up the meat from the soup. After that, to save time, he always took small branches to take out food from the hot pot. For a long time, he was skilled at picking up food with small sticks. In this way, the first types of chopsticks were born.
Some people think that the famous scholar Confucius(孔子) living from about 551 BC to 479 BC pushed the development of chopsticks. Confucius believed that using chopsticks instead of knives would remind people to stay away from killing and violence(暴力) at table. We enjoy our delicious food with our family members or friends while feeling the peaceful and people-loving world by using chopsticks at table anytime.
The chopsticks are made of different kinds of materials including bamboo, wood, animal bone, beautiful stone, and some other materials. There are more than 200 types of chopsticks now. Among them, the bamboo chopsticks are most widely used.
“A chopstick can be broken easily; ten pairs of chopsticks hold each other tightly...” The song is popular with many people, and it always encourages people to work together.

Are you an “I person” or an “E person” These two personality labels(个性标签) are widely discussed online. They are part of a popular personality test called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI. All of the results have four letters, and there are 16 results in total. “I” stands for “introverted (内向的)” and “E” refers to “extroverted”.
Even if someone is typically quiet, many online discussions suggest that an “I” person can still act outgoing at times. For example, when an introverted person is with a group of introverted friends, they might become more social like an “E” person. That is hiding your true personality in some situations. According to experts, this is called “masking”. Human beings want to get the sense of belonging by pleasing others.
Using the MBTI result to identify(识别) and describe someone's personality seems fun. However, I went too far at one time. My sister was excitedly making a day-to-day travel plan when I remembered from an article that “P people” don't like to make or stick to plans, so I said to her, “You don't seem like a ‘P person’. ” She asked back,“ Brother, why do you say that Since when do I need to follow what my personality test tells me to do ” I realized I took the result too seriously.
The MBTI personality test may show something you don't know about yourself and can even be a fun ice-breaker question when meeting new friends. And that's all it is —for fun. Knowing someone's MBTI result doesn't mean you really know this person. And those four letters of yours don't define(定义) who you are.

In recent years, to improve science education, several elderly scientists in China have been spreading scientific knowledge through short videos.
Liu Jiaqi from the Chinese Academy of Sciences(CAS)*began to spread scientific knowledge online in November 2021. Liu has made over 100 short videos, many of which are about volcanoes(火山). “I believe that it is necessary for scientists to popularize science,” Liu said.
Wang Pinxian, a professor at Tongji University, shares his videos and even stories about science online. He is also a writer of books about science, which have been popular among readers. “A scientist should be able to explain scientific knowledge clearly and in simple words,” he said. “It can help young people to develop interest in science.”
Wang Yusheng used to work in the China Science and Technology Museum in Beijing. The 81-year-old shares his knowledge on ancient Chinese science and technology, as well as stories of famous scientists, like Galileo and Newton, with people through videos. He even spreads scientific knowledge among primary and middle schools across the country and he enjoys it. “Staying with teenagers makes me feel younger,” Wang Yusheng said.
Jin Yong, who is a professor at Tsinghua University, has spent six years producing science videos about chemistry. To Jin, science popularization is of great importance.
