When was the last time you used a telephone box I mean to make an actual phone call — not to shelter from the rain. Ages ago, right The last time I used a phone box for its intended purpose was…2006. I was conducting auditions (试演) for my play in my tiny old shared house in London. Hoping to impress some talented actors to come and work for me for nothing, I spread some throws over the sofas and lit candles to make it seem a bit more ”young professional”.
As I rushed outdoors to empty the wastepaper baskets, the door swung shut behind me. Suddenly I was locked outside. My mobile phone was inside, but luckily there was a telephone box across the street. So, I called Directory Assistance, got put through to our landlady’s managing agent, and had a spare key sent to me with just enough time to get back in before the actors arrived.
As it has been many years since I last used one, I should hardly be surprised that then are no longer any public telephones near my house. The last one standing has just been turn into a “mini community library”: any passer-by can “borrow” a book from its shelves return it later, or replace it with another title from their own collection.
For a few months after the “library” opened, I didn’t bother taking a look, as I had assumed that it would be stuffed full of cheese love stories. Then I noticed fork conducting spring cleans dropping boxes of voluminous books on various subjects there. And these books were free. This unbeatable price-point encouraged me to experiment with dozens of titles that I would never normally consider buying. And I’ve discovered some great books!
If I ever get trapped outside my house again, my local telephone box will, sadly no longer be able to connect me with my keys. But it can certainly keep me entertained while I wait for my wife to rescue me.

A. The play. B. The shared house.
C. The sofa. D. The telephone box.

6. What do we know about the “mini community library”
A. It provides phone service for free. B. Anyone can contribute to its collection.
C. It is popular among young readers. D. Books must be returned within a month.
7. Why did the author start to use the “library”
A. He wanted to borrow some love stories.
B He was encouraged by a close neighbour.
C. He found there were excellent free books.
D. He thought it was an ideal place for reading.

When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier, far happier.
These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. “Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,” said George Vaillant, the psychologist who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”
Vaillant’s study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly manifest. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out. Working — at any age — is important. As Tolstoy once said, “One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work.”
8. What do we know about John
A. He enjoyed his career and marriage. B. He had few childhood playmates.
C. He received little love from his family. D. He was envied by others in his childhood.
9. Vaillant’s words in Paragraph 2 serve as ________.
A. a description of personal values and social values
B. an analysis of how work was related to competence
C. an example for parents’ expectations of their children
D. an explanation why some boys grew into happy men
10. Vaillant’s team obtained their findings by ________.
A. recording the boys’ effort in school B. evaluating the men’s mental health
C. comparing different sets of scores D. measuring the men’s problem solving ability
11. What does the underlined word “manifest” probably mean in Paragraph 4
A. Common but abstract. B. Normal but annoying.
C. Clear and definite. D. Sudden and rapid.
D
According to the Solar Energy Industry Association the number of solar panels installed(安装)has grown rapidly in the past decade, and it has to grow even faster to meet climate goals. But all of that growth will take up a lot of space, and though more and more people accept the concept of solar energy, few like large solar panels to be installed near them.
Solar developers want to put up panels as quickly and cheaply as possible, so they haven’t given much thought to what they put under them. Often, they’ll end up filling the area with small stones and using chemicals to control weeds. The result is that many communities, especially in farming regions, see solar farms as destroyers of the soil.
“Solar projects need to be good neighbors,” says Jordan Macknick, the head of the Innovative Site Preparation and Impact Reductions on the Environment(InSPIRE)project. “They need to be protectors of the land and contribute to the agricultural economy.” InSPIRE is investigating practical approaches to “low-impact” solar development, which focuses on establishing and operating solar farms in a way that is kinder to the land. One of the easiest low-impact solar strategies is providing habitat for pollinators(传粉昆虫).
Habitat loss, pesticide use, and climate change have caused dramatic declines in pollinator populations over the past couple of decades, which has damaged the U.S. agricultural economy. Over 28 states have passed laws related to pollinator habitat protection and pesticide use. Conservation organizations put out pollinator-friendliness guidelines for home gardens, businesses, schools, cities—and now there are guidelines for solar farms.
Over the past few years, many solar farm developers have transformed the space under their solar panels into a shelter for various kinds of pollinators, resulting in soil improvement and carbon reduction. “These pollinator-friendly solar farms can have a valuable impact on everything that’s going on in the landscape,” says Macknick.
12. What do solar developers often ignore
A. The decline in the demand for solar energy.
B. The negative impact of installing solar panels.
C. The rising labor cost of building solar farms.
D. The most recent advances in solar technology.
13. What does InSPIRE aim to do
A Improve the productivity of local farms.
B. Invent new methods for controlling weeds.
C. Make solar projects environmentally friendly.
D. Promote the use of solar energy in rural areas.
14. What is the purpose of the laws mentioned in paragraph 4
A. To conserve pollinators. B. To restrict solar development.
C. To diversify the economy. D. To ensure the supply of energy.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text
A. Pollinators: To Leave or to Stay B. Solar Energy: Hope for the Future
C. InSPIRE: A Leader in Agriculture D. Solar Farms: A New Development

Katie was exceptionally small. We were in the fifth grade, but she was as short as a third grader. Although her body was small, Katie was big at heart. She had a sharp mind, too. Sometimes she got her share of teasing, but Katie knew how to handle it. All the kids who knew Katie liked her a lot.
Katie loved helping others in the class, so whenever someone was stuck on the computer he always called her for help and advice. Katie loved jokes and she always had a joke that would cheer someone up whenever he was down. She was truly the most kind and generous friend anyone could ask for.
But the other day she was in big trouble. She was such a sweet kid, a third-grade teacher always dreamed of having a classroom filled with students like Katie. She was never ever a discipline problem. I just couldn’t imagine why she had made her parents so angry.
It seemed that Katie had been running up (积欠) sizable charges in the lunchroom. Her parents explained that Katie brought a great homemade lunch each day, and there was no reason for her to buy school lunch. They assumed a sit-down with Katie would solve the problem, but failed. So they asked me to help them get to the bottom of this situation.
So the next day, I asked Katie to my office. “Why are you charging (记账) lunches, Katie What happens to your homemade lunch ” I asked. “I lose it,” she responded. I leaned back in my chair and said. “I don’t believe you, Katie.” She didn’t care. “Is someone stealing your lunch, Katie ” I took a new track. “No. I just lose it,” she said. Well, there was nothing else I could do.

A a description of personal values and social values
B. an analysis of how work was related to competence
C. an example for parents’ expectations of their children
D. an explanation why some boys grew into happy men
10. Vaillant’s team obtained their findings by ________.
A. recording the boys’ effort in school B. evaluating the men’s mental health
C. comparing different sets of scores D. measuring the men’s problem solving ability
11. What does the underlined word “manifest” probably mean in Paragraph 4
A. Common but abstract. B. Normal but annoying.
C. Clear and definite. D. Sudden and rapid.
【答案】8. A 9. D 10. C 11. C

【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第二段“The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. “Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society,” said George Vaillant, the psychologist who made the discovery. “And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them.”(研究表明,那些小时候工作过的人比那些没有工作过的人生活得更快乐、更有成效。“在家里或社区工作的男孩获得了能力,并逐渐觉得自己是有价值的社会成员,”发现这一发现的心理学家乔治·韦兰特说。“因为他们自我感觉良好,别人也会对他们感觉良好。”)”可推知,第二段Vaillant的话解释了为什么有些男孩会长成快乐的人。故选D。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段“Interviews were repeated at ages 25, 31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.(在25岁、31岁和47岁时重复接受采访。在Vaillant的研究中,研究人员将这些男性的心理健康得分与他们的童年活动得分进行了比较。兼职工作、家务、在学校的努力以及处理问题的能力都可以获得分数)”可推知,Vaillant的团队是通过比较不同的分数获得发现的。故选C。
【11题详解】
词义猜测题。根据划线词下文“Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed.(那些经常参加童年活动的人与各种各样的人保持友好关系的可能性是其他人的两倍,收入高的可能性是其他人的五倍,失业的不可能性是其他人的16倍)”可推知,男性在孩童时期的行为和成年后的表现之间的联系非常明显的,划线词manifest意思为“明显的,清晰的”,与C选项“Clear and definite(清晰明确的)”意思一致。故选C。

According to the Solar Energy Industry Association, the number of solar panels installed(安装)has grown rapidly in the past decade, and it has to grow even faster to meet climate goals.
13. What does InSPIRE aim to do
A. Improve the productivity of local farms.
【答案】12 B 13. C 14. A 15. D
【解析】
【导语】本文是一篇说明文。介绍的是用一种更加友好的方式建立一种新型的太阳能农场,这种新型的农场更有利于保护各种传粉昆虫,从而促进农业的发展。
【12题详解】
推理判断题。根据第二段中的“Often, they’ll end up filling the area with small stones and using chemicals to control weeds. The result is that many communities, especially in farming regions, see solar farms as destroyers of the soil.(通常,他们最终会用小石头填满该地区,并使用化学物质来控制杂草。结果是,许多社区,特别是在农业地区,将太阳能农场视为土壤的破坏者。)”可知,太阳能开发者采用不环保的方式处理太阳能板安装后产生的问题,导致人们把太阳能农场看作是土壤的破坏者,由此可以推断,开发者在安装太阳能板后忽略了其带来的负面影响。故选B项。
【13题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中的“InSPIRE is investigating practical approaches to “low-impact” solar development, which focuses on establishing and operating solar farms in a way that is kinder to the land.(InSPIRE正在研究“低影响”太阳能开发的实用方法,其重点是以对土地更友好的方式建立和运营太阳能农场。)”可知,InSPIRE采用有好的方式建立和运营太阳能农场,也就是使得太阳能农场更加环保。故选C项。
【14题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段中的“Over 28 states have passed laws related to pollinator habitat protection and pesticide use.(超过28个州通过了与传粉媒介栖息地保护和农药使用有关的法律。)”可知,这些法律都是与保护传粉者栖息地和农药使用相关,所以这些法律的目的是保护授粉者。故选A项。
【15题详解】
主旨大意题。根据最后一段中的“Over the past few years, many solar farm developers have transformed the space under their solar panels into a shelter for various kinds of pollinators, resulting in soil improvement and carbon reduction.(在过去的几年里,许多太阳能农场开发商将太阳能电池板下的空间改造成各种传粉媒介的庇护所,从而改善了土壤并减少了碳排放。)”

Many things await us to do. We can start from the very little things around us, like picking up waste in the street, wiping off unwanted advertisements, observing traffic rules and so on. Besides, it’s also a good idea for us to give out booklets to advocate civilized behavior.

【答案】 The problem was still unsolved the next week until I noticed a boy in the school canteen. He was silent sitting alone at a lunch table. He had messy hair and a thin face, always wearing his oversized coat and looking sad and shy. I thought I would go and sit with him for a while. As I walked towards him, I noticed the lunch bag on the table. The name card on the bag said “Katie”. Now I understood what had happened. Later that day, I found Katie and talked to her about it.
Katie asked me not to tell her parents. But I drove to her house that evening after I was sure that she was in bed. I had never seen parents so proud of their child. Katie didn’t care that she was misunderstood by her parents and teacher. But she cared about a little boy who was hungry and scared. What a sweet girl she was! Later Katie still bought lunch every day at school. And every morning, as she headed out of the door, her mom handed her a delicious homemade lunch.
