The Fault in Our Stars by John Green
Because of cancer, protagonist (主人公) Hazel Lancaster believes her life is over. But then she meets Augustus Waters, and the way he makes her laugh—the way he makes her feel seen—makes her want to live again. Amanda Gorman, a 22-year-old poet, recited her poem The Hill We Climb at the recent Presidential Inauguration (就职) Ceremony. Her words and performance were wonderful and were admired across the world. But what is even more wonderful is the story of how Amanda arrived at this moment and the lessons she offers other kids around the world.
Amanda was raised by a single mother, Joan Wicks, in Los Angeles. There was very limited television watching in their house. Encouraged by her mother, who was a teacher, Amanda fell in love with reading and writing. She gained confidence in these areas. Her passion for poetry started when she was about 8 years old.
But despite her interests and talents, she had some obstacles. Amanda has a listening processing disorder and is very sensitive to sound. She also had a speech disorder during childhood. This caused her to participate in speech treatment which helped her to turn her obstacles into gifts and strengths. As she told The Harvard Gazette in 2018, “I always saw it as a strength because since I was experiencing these obstacles in terms of my listening
and speech skills, I became really good at reading and writing.”
Amanda started to dream of becoming president when she was in 6th grade. As Amanda became more confident, she became more driven to transform the world for good. She went on to earn a degree at Harvard University. And then, Amanda became the world’s first Youth Poet Laureate (获奖者) in history!
While Amanda looked calm, cool, and collected at the inauguration, she admits she is always nervous, like many of us, about public speaking. To ease this, she developed a spell that she recites to give herself confidence in moments of doubt, “I am the daughter of black writers. We are descendants (子孙) of freedom fighters who broke through chains and changed the world.”

I enjoy throwing stuff away. I’d love to go full minimalism(极简主义),but my wife and two teenage kids do not share my dream of a house with almost nothing in it. I have tried. When the kids were little, I taught them my two favorite games —“Do We Need It ” and “Put It in Its Place”— and made them play every few months. Their enthusiasm never matched mine.
If I’m going to be honest, my own tidying skills are not as great as I’d like. My “discarded” pile is never quite the trash mountain I want because I make up excuses for why things are useful. I consider this unhealthy. I want to be better at moving on.
So, this time I found help — the classics for people like me: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.by Marie Kondo. Kondo’s commitment to her craft is astonishing. Her philosophy is only to keep things you love. Can I go full Kondo I will try. One central idea is to clean by category. You start by collecting all clothes and gathering them together for consideration. It makes you rethink how you organize. Next, hold each item and ask if it brings you joy. This way you’re choosing what to keep. And that’s how I find myself with all my clothes on my bedroom floor. My wife walks by and gives me a look that says I’m nuts. She’s probably not wrong.
Somewhere near the bottom of this chaos is my special jacket. I move through the pile: pants, shirts, suits and shoes. Then my last category: jackets. I haven’t worn the thing in about 30 years. Somehow, it has survived. Now that I’m striving(力求)to follow Kondo — surely, its time has come
I hold it in my hand. There is a tear just below the collar that widens as I hold it. It’s literally falling apart. Will I ever wear it again Not a chance. Does it feel good to wear Does it bring me joy Actually, yes. At this moment, my daughter walks in. She asks about the jacket. I tell her the story. She thinks I should keep it. It’s cool and unique and full of memories. She is arguing that nostalgia(怀念)is the very reason.
I’m not entirely convinced by my daughter’s arguments. I believe in looking ahead, not backward. Nevertheless, sometimes it’s hard to let go. So I gently place the jacket on the “keep” pile.
28.What does the underlined word “discarded” probably mean in Paragraph 2
A.Adjusted B.kept C.abandoned D.tidied
29.What drives the author to read The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up
A.To learn how to categorize. B.To improve his tidying skills.
C.To persuade his family members. D.To develop passion for minimalism.
30.What is the attitude of the author’s family members toward minimalism
A.They are curious about it. B.They completely support it.
C.They are strongly against it. D.They are less passionate about it.
31.The author keeps the jacket probably because of _______.
A.the joy it brings him. B.his wife’s statements.
C.the belief in nostalgia. D.his daughter’s indifference.
D
Dopamine (多巴胺) is often considered as the source of pleasure. But that’s not quite what it does. Dopamine is what makes us desire things. And it’s that desire that gives us the motivation to get up and do things.
In fact, your brain considers something more important than others mainly depending on how much dopamine it’s expecting to get. If an activity releases a lot of dopamine, you’ll be motivated to repeat it, over and over. So which behavior releases dopamine Any activity where you expect there’s a possible reward releases it.
And in today’s digital society, we are flooding our brains with unnaturally high amounts of dopamine on a daily basis, even if we don’t know it. Some examples of high dopamine behavior include: visiting social media websites, playing video games, etc.
And you might think, “Oh so what It’s not like it’s harming me in any way.” But you’d be wrong. Our
bodies have a biologically balanced system. Whenever an imbalance occurs, our body adapts to it. Basically, your brain gets used to having high levels of dopamine and those levels become your new normal. Thus, you develop a dopamine tolerance. This can be a huge problem because the things that don’t give you as much dopamine don’t interest you any longer. That’s why people tend to prefer playing video games or surfing the Internet, compared to studying or working on their business.
But it is possible to make doing difficult things feel easier. Separate yourself from the unnaturally high amounts of dopamine, or at least expose yourself to it far less frequently. Only then will normal, everyday, low dopamine activities become exciting again and you’ll be able to do them for longer. That’s why you might want to limit your phone and computer usage, along with other high dopamine-releasing behavior.
We are all dopamine addicts to a certain extent. And that’s a good thing because dopamine motivates us to achieve our goals and improve ourselves. But it’s up to you to decide where you’re going to get your dopamine.
32.When is dopamine released
A.When tough things come into being. B.When we are encouraged to do things.
C.When we take pleasure in the behavior. D.When possible rewards can be obtained.
33.What can we learn from the passage
A.Dopamine does great harm to our body.
B.It’s difficult for our body to keep the balance.
C.Video games produce more dopamine than study.
D.Dopamine tolerance keeps us away from social media.
34.What is the purpose of the fifth paragraph
A.To explain why dopamine is harmful. B.To introduce the effects of dopamine.
C.To stress the importance of dopamine. D.To offer solutions to dopamine tolerance.
35.What is the author’s attitude toward dopamine
A.Doubtful. B.Objective. C.Concerned. D.Negative.

He worked hard to earn exceptional marks; he tried to be obedient(顺从的), he chose inspiring friends and always tried to behave well. However, it felt to Marco that his father had little time for him. Except for his demands around chores after school, communication was nonexistent. It seemed to Marco the only time his dad ever spoke to him was to be demanding or critical. Marco sank further into his low self-esteem(自尊心)and was overwhelmed with feeling unappreciated, inadequate and depressed.
One day his father, already tired after a long day, tripped over Marco’s bike in the garage. The angry quarrel that followed left Marco feeling grieved. It seemed no matter how hard he tried he could never do anything right. In despair Marco blurted out, “That’s it! It’s enough!”
For two days, Marco felt so miserable. All he could think of was wanting to leave this enormous pain, those overwhelming feelings of rejection and unworthiness.
Two days later, his aunt called him. To Marco, this seemed like a miracle. Aunt Ginette usually only called
once a year, on his birthday. She said she had just seen some young teenagers participate in a public speaking contest called Gala Personnalité sponsored by Club Optimist—and she thought about him. She thought he should give it a try. She told him she firmly believed he could perform on stage like the other kids, since she had seen him perform for the family at Christmas.

As we know, most people have a national hero or heroes in their hearts. For me, Yuan Longping, a Chinese great agricultural scientist and academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, is actually my national hero.
He was born on September 7th, 1930. In the 1960s, China experienced famine and he came up with an idea for hybridizing rice. In 1973, he developed a new way of growing rice and hence new rice was developed. In 1979, his technique for hybrid rice was introduced into the United States, which was the first case of intellectual property rights transfer in the history of China. With the development of new rice, gone are the days when Chinese people suffer from terrible starvation, and more countries of the world are able to grow more rice to feed the growing world population.
We should learn from him the spirit of striving for the well-being of mankind. His perseverance, indifference to personal fame and fortune, his devotion to research work and profound insight are also great merits we should follow!
Feeling her strong belief, Marco agreed to enter the contest. The first thing in his mind was to determine a proper topic and supporting details. His Chinese teacher offered to help him and gave him some good advice. Then followed the repeated practice. Every morning he would get up very early and speak to a mirror to check whether everything is in its proper place. After several weeks’ practice, Marco became quite confident and couldn’t wait for the speaking contest.
Four months later, the big night arrived. Standing before an audience of hundreds for the first time, Marco felt extremely nervous and unexpectedly made a grammar mistake. He was frustrated and decided to give up. But the moment he spotted his aunt and his father’s fond but firm eyes, he gathered his courage and went on. Thunderous applause and the announcement that he won the first place made Marco cry. After the contest, He wrote in his diary: “Believe in yourself, be thankful to the one who believes in you and accept the one who don’t understand you. ”

Good morning, children and parents. Welcome to the Children’s Club in our neighborhood. As the end of the school year is drawing near, we’ve prepared various gifts, such as stickers, bookmarks and pencils. To add more fun, we’ve hidden them for you to find around this center. (18)
Here’s the information you need to know. First of all, all children should put your names down at the desk, because you will be divided into several groups. (19) Then, if you’re ready, preschool children will be going out of this front door and their parents should go together. Outside this door, you will see a flag as the marker for your area. There will be some helpers to direct you. If you are in the first to third grade, you’re going right outside that back door to search in the yard. The parents of this group are welcome to go with the children. Finally, the fourth graders, please, follow me down the hall through the double doors and to the other side of the center where you’ll be going to look for your gifts. (20) There’s plenty for everyone.

根据第一段第一句“Amanda Gorman, a 22-year-old poet, recited her poem The Hill We Climb at the recent Presidential Inauguration (就职) Ceremony.(22岁的诗人阿曼达·戈尔曼在最近的总统就职典礼上朗诵了她的诗《我们攀登的山》)”可知,Amanda Gorman在最近的总统就职仪式上朗诵了自己的一首原创诗歌。故选C。
根据第三段中“Amanda has a listening processing disorder and is very sensitive to sound. She also had a speech disorder during childhood.(阿曼达有听力处理障碍,对声音非常敏感。她在童年时也有语言障碍)”可知,Amanda有听力障碍,而且幼时还曾有语言障碍;再结合画线词所在句中的“despite her interests and talents”可知,此处表示尽管她有兴趣和天赋,但她也有一些障碍。由此可推知,obstacles应意为“障碍”,与A项意思相近。故选D。
26.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“To ease this, she developed a spell that she recites to give herself confidence in moments of doubt(为了缓解这种情况,她发明了一个咒语,她会背诵这个咒语,在怀疑的时候给自己信心)”可知,Amanda通过背诵一句特殊的话来缓解自己的紧张情绪。

【答案】28.C 29.B 30.D 31.A
根据第二段“If I’m going to be honest, my own tidying skills are not as great as I’d like. My “discarded” pile is never quite the trash mountain I want because I make up excuses for why things are useful. I consider this unhealthy. I want to be better at moving on.(说实话,我自己的整理技能并没有我想要的那么好。我的“废弃”堆从来都不是我想要的垃圾山,因为我为了东西为什么有用找借口。我认为这样不健康。我想更好地继续前进。)”可知,划线词语的意思是“废弃的”。 A. Adjusted调整后的;B. kept保持的;C. abandoned废弃的;D. tidied整理的。故选C。
29.细节理解题。文章第二段“If I’m going to be honest, my own tidying skills are not as great as I’d like. My “discarded” pile is never quite the trash mountain I want because I make up excuses for why things are useful. I consider this unhealthy. I want to be better at moving on.(说实话,我自己的整理技能并没有我想要的那么好。我的“废弃”堆从来都不是我想要的垃圾山,因为我为东西为什么有用找借口。我认为这样不健康。我想更好地继续前进。)”以及第三段“So, this time I found help — the classics for people like me: The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up.by Marie Kondo. Kondo’s commitment to her craft is astonishing. (所以,这次我找到了帮助—为像我这样的人准备的经典书籍:近藤麻理惠的《改变生活的整理魔法》。)”可知,作者之所以读The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up这本书是为了提高他自己的整理技能,故选B。

文章倒数第二段讲到“She thinks I should keep it. It’s cool and unique and full of memories. She is arguing that nostalgia(怀念)is the very reason. (她认为我应该保留它。它很酷,很独特,充满了回忆。她认为怀旧正是原因。)”可知作者保留这件夹克可能是因为它给他带来的快乐。故选A。
根据第二段中“So which behavior releases dopamine Any activity where you expect there’s a possible reward releases it.(那么哪种行为会释放多巴胺呢?任何你预期会有奖励的活动都会释放它。)”可知,在可能的情况下获得奖励,该活动则会释放多巴胺。故选D。
33.推理判断题。根据第四段中“This can be a huge problem because the things that don’t give you as much dopamine don’t interest you any longer. That’s why people tend to prefer playing video games or surfing the Internet, compared to studying or working on their business.(这可能是一个巨大的问题,因为那些没有给你那么多多巴胺的东西不再让你感兴趣了。这就是为什么与学习或工作相比,人们更喜欢玩电子游戏或上网。)”可知,不能一直让你产生多巴胺的活动则不会在让你感兴趣,这也就是为什么学习或者从事自己的业务比不上游戏或者上网,因为游戏或者上网可以一直让你产生多巴胺即电子游戏比学习产生更多的多巴胺。故选C。
34.推理判断题。根据第四段中“ Basically, your brain gets used to having high levels of dopamine and those levels become your new normal. Thus, you develop a dopamine tolerance. (基本上,你的大脑习惯了高水平的多巴胺,这些水平成为你的新常态。因此,你会产生多巴胺耐受性。)”可知,此处提出了人的大脑习惯了高水平的多巴胺,因此会产生多巴胺耐受的问题。同时根据第五段中“Separate yourself from the unnaturally high amounts of dopamine, or at least expose yourself to it far less frequently. Only then will normal, everyday, low dopamine activities become exciting again and you’ll be able to do them for longer. (让自己远离不自然的大量多巴胺,或者至少让自己少接触多巴胺。只有这样,正常的、日常的、低多巴胺的活动才会再次变得令人兴奋,你才能做得更长。)”可知,此处主要强调的是如何避免或者解决多巴胺的耐受问题即远离不自然的大量多巴胺,或者至少让自己少接触多巴胺。故本段的目的是为多巴胺耐受性提供解决方案。故选D。
35.推理判断题。根据第一段中“Dopamine (多巴胺) is often considered as the source of pleasure. But that’s not quite what it does. Dopamine is what makes us desire things. (多巴胺通常被认为是快乐的来源。但这并不完全是它的作用。多巴胺让我们产生欲望。)”以及倒数第三段中“Thus, you develop a dopamine tolerance. This can be a huge problem because the things that don’t give you as much dopamine don’t interest you any longer. That’s why people tend to prefer playing video games or surfing the Internet, compared to studying or working on their business.( 因此,你会产生多巴胺耐受性。这可能是一个大问题,因为不能给你那么多多巴胺的事情不再让你感兴趣。这就是为什么人们更喜欢玩电子游戏或上网,而不是学习或从事自己的业务。)”以及最后一段中“We are all dopamine addicts to a certain extent. And that’s a good thing because dopamine motivates us to achieve our goals and improve ourselves. But it’s up to you to decide where you’re going to get your dopamine.(在某种程度上,我们都是多巴胺成瘾者。这是一件好事,因为多巴胺会激励我们实现目标,提高自我。但从哪里获得多巴胺取决于你自己。)”可知,作者指出多巴胺可以是快乐的源泉,能够激励我们实现目标,提高自我,可是同时容易出现多巴胺耐受状况,出现游戏、网络上瘾最终舍弃自己的学习或者业务,因此作者对多巴胺的态度是客观的。故选B。
