In March, 2021, the much-loved children's author Beverly Cleary passed away at age 104.Cleary's writing changed the world of children's books by showing that stories about the lives of ordinary kids could be interesting, funny, and popular.
Cleary was born in 1916.As a child, she had trouble learning to read. Even after she learned to love reading, she felt like the people she was reading about didn't have much to do with her and her life, which were unattractive to her. She wanted to read funny books about children like herself.
When she grew up, Cleary realized there weren't many books about ordinary kids. So she set out to write them at age 30 and tried to get kids hooked on reading since she found they didn't show much interest in books.
Cleary's first book, Henry Huggins, came out in 1950.It tells the story of a boy and the dog that he takes in. Soon Cleary wrote more books about Henry Huggins and the other children in his neighborhood. Ramona Quimby, also known as Ramona the Pest, became Cleary's best known book. The Mouse and the Motorcycle tells the exciting story of a motoreycle-riding mouse and his friendship with a young boy. But that sort of fantasy was unusual for Cleary, who usually focused on real life. In several books, the parents have money trouble or are unhappy with their jobs. Dear Mr. Henshaw tells the story of a boy dealing with his parents' breaking-off.
Cleary had kept writing for 53 years, creating over 40 books in all. She won almost every award there was for children's books, including the Newbery Medal and the National Book Award. Though Cleary is no longer with us, her characters and stories will be loved and shared for years to come.

In 2023, more than 1,000 people died and 1,200 were injured in home fires just in China, with direct property loss because of home fires at about 6.1 billion yuan. Every day Chinese people experience the horror of fires, but most people don't understand fires.
To protect yourself, it is important to learn something about home fires.
In less than 30 seconds a small flame(火焰)can get completely out of control and turn into a major fire. It only takes minutes for thick black smoke to fill a house or for it to be in flames. Most deadly fires happen in the home when people are asleep. If you realize a fire, you won't have time to take valuables because the fire spreads too quickly and the smoke is too thick. The fire uses up the oxygen you need and produces smoke and poisonous(有毒的) gases. Breathing even small amounts of smoke and poisonous gases can make you tired and sleepy, and short of breath. The smoke can cause you to be a deep sleeper before the flames reach your door. You may not wake up in time to escape.
Room temperatures in a fire can be 100 degrees at floor level and rise to 600 degrees at eye level. Breathing in this super-hot air will burn your lungs. It can melt(熔化) clothes to your skin. In five minutes, a room can get so hot that everything in it starts to burn at once.
Fires are bright at first, but quickly produce black smoke and complete darkness. If you wake up to a fire you may be blinded, confused about where you are or which direction you should go in and unable to find your way around the home you've lived in for years.
Only when we know the true nature of fires can we prepare our families and ourselves.

My brother Joe and I no longer live in the same state, but I make sure to give Joe a call every Christmas. In fact, I will never forget a Christmas when I was seven and Joe was five. I've kept a secret about that Christmas for 20 years. Now hearing Joe's voice makes me feel guilty(内疚的) about it all over again. I think he probably doesn't even remember it.
When we were kids, Joe almost drove me "crazy"! If Mom brought home my favorite yogurt, Joe would make sure to eat it before I got a chance. When our parents gave us each our own basketball, Joe insisted on playing with mine instead of his own.
That Christmas when I was seven, I was determined to teach him a lesson. At that time I was old enough that I no longer believed in Santa, but I knew Joe did. I couldn't stand him thinking Santa had put him on the "nice" list when I knew he'd been naughty(淘气的)all year.
One day before Christmas, I put on my winter jacket and headed over to our neighbor's backyard. It was filled with rocks. To me they really looked like coal(煤炭). I was sure that they'd look like coal to Joe too. I filled a lot of the rocks into the pockets of my winter jacket, brought them up to my room and hid them under my bed. Then I waited.
That morning, I got up early, went downstairs secretly and put the rocks into the red stocking with Joe's name on it. I watched Joe take down his heavy stocking, lay it on the living room floor.

Looking at the gift inside, Joe's smile disappeared suddenly. His face turned red. He didn't cry or complain. He stayed completely silent. He wouldn't even look at anyone else in the room. As I watched, my own expectation turned to something like regret. Joe put his whole stocking aside, hiding it so our parents wouldn't see how "Santa" had treated him. I'd never told anyone what I'd done. But it still troubled me, even all these years later. I must tell him the truth when I called him this Christmas.
I said on the phone, "Hey, Joe, do you remember that Christmas morning when you were five...your stocking..." Joe said, "Coal! Of course I remember! Wow, you really frightened me that time." To my relief, my brother burst out laughing. "I was embarrassed!" he added. "I waited until everyone had left the room. Then I took the rocks outside. I didn't want Mom and Dad to know I was naughty!" "I guess if either of us should get coal in a Christmas stocking that year it must be me," I said. It felt so good to say it, even if Joe never mentioned it. It turned out Joe's forgiveness—even all these years later—was the best stocking present I could have wished for.
