W: Mmm.
M: And, is there anything you weren’t satisfied with
W: Well, normally, the trains run on time and are pretty reliable but today it was 15 minutes late.
M: OK. I’ll put that down. Now I’d also like to ask about the facilities at this station. You’ve probably noticed that. Can you say something
W: I think the best thing is that they’ve improved the amount of information about train times that’s given to passengers — before there was only one board. But now there is an electronic display panel. Every time I walk to the platform, I can clearly and quickly know when my train will come.
M: That’s good. Anything else
W: Let’s see... One thing is that there aren’t enough places to sit down, especially on the platforms.
M: OK — so I’ll put ‘seating’ down. Thanks for your time.

B
Growing up on a farm, I learned from my parents about the large bees we called mangangava. But in college when I gave a presentation about those bees, I didn’t mention their familiar name; instead I used formal terms when describing their adaptations for pollinating (授粉). I was afraid of being judged for expressing my personal knowledge in a science class. But when the instructor pressed me to tell the class whether I’d seen the bees myself and what I called them, my views and my whole career path began to change. I realized my background was valuable, and that my calling was to help educate others like me.
My parents worked on a small farm and I often helped out when I was not in school. They had a close relationship with nature, something they learned from my grandparents and passed down to me. This was why I became interested in biology.
In college, I joined a series of labs to gain research experience, but my interest in pursuing a career as a scientist began to wane after I realized my research was not helping poor people like my parents. As a black student from a rural community, I also felt out of place in most classes. The feeling of not belonging circled in my head. I sometimes thought about giving up.
My instructor’s request that I share my knowledge of the mangangava bee changed my view. She saw that tapping into my personal experiences would help me grasp the scientific concepts. No other professor bad shown that kind of sensitivity, which helped me realize I did have a place in higher education and that I didn’t need to hide who I truly am.
I’m now a master’s student in education, working on a project that explores the connect ion between science and traditional knowledge. I don’t think I’d be here if I hadn’t crossed paths with my instructor. We need more educators and scientists like her people who can serve as role models and know that the best way to nurture new scientists is to allow students to be themselves.
24.What did the author initially think of his background when in college
A.It was of little use for his college studies.
B.It motivated him to carry on his research.
C.It gave him an advantage over others.
D.It was something he wanted to hide.
25.What does the underlined word “wane” in paragraph 3 probably mean
A.remain B.advance C.fade D.rise
26.What should a good educator do according to the author
A.Value students’ personal knowledge and views.
B.Inspire students to work as hard as he or she does.
C.Treat students from different backgrounds equally.
D.Be equipped with rich knowledge of a certain field.
27.What is the main idea of this passage
A.The family is one of the nature’s masterpieces.
B.Every man is the architect of his own fortune.
C.A good teacher is better than ten thousand books.
D.Good habits formed at youth make all the difference.
【答案】24.D 25.C 26.A 27.C
根据第一段内容“But in college when I gave a presentation about those bees, I didn’t mention their familiar name; instead I used formal terms when describing their adaptations for pollinating(授粉). I was afraid of being judged for expressing my personal knowledge in a science class. (但在大学里,当我做关于这些蜜蜂的演讲时,我没有提到它们熟悉的名字;相反,我在描述它们对授粉的适应时使用了正式的术语。我害怕因为在科学课上表达了我的个人知识而受到评判)”,“ I realized my background was valuable, and that my calling was to help educate others like me.(我意识到我的背景很有价值,我的使命是帮助教育像我这样的人)”和第四段“No other professor bad shown that kind of sensitivity, which helped me realize I did have a place in higher education and that I didn’t need to hide who I truly am.(没有其他坏教授表现出这种敏感性,这让我意识到我在高等教育中确实有一席之地,我不需要隐瞒自己的真实身份)”可知,作者在科学课上作报告时没有用他熟悉的名字,用专业的术语来介绍这种蜜蜂,因为他害怕因为表达个人知识被人评论,后来那次事情之后他意识到他的背景知识是有价值的,作者意识到不必隐藏真正的自己。
根据划线所在的句子“after I realized my research was not helping poor people like my parents(在我意识到我的研究并没有帮助像我父母这样的穷人之后)”以及“The feeling of not belonging circled in my head. I sometimes thought about giving up.(不归属感在我的脑海中盘旋。我有时想过放弃)”可知,当作者意识到自己的研究并没有帮助像父母这样的穷人时,作者对从事科学家职业的兴趣开始减弱。由此推知,划线词wane意为“减退,减弱”。故选C
26.推理判断题。根据最后一段“We ne ed more educators and scientists like her people who can serve as role models and know that the best way to nurture new scientists is to allow students to be themselves.(我们需要更多像她这样的教育工作者和科学家,他们可以成为榜样,知道培养新科学家的最好方法是让学生做自己)”可知,作者认为优秀的教育者应该要为学生树立榜样,让学生做自己。 故选A。
根据最后一段“I don’t think I’d be here if I hadn’t crossed paths with my instructor. We ne ed more educators and scientists like her people who can serve as role models and know that the best way to nurture new scientists is to allow students to be themselves.(如果我没有和我的教练相遇,我想我不会在这里。

The world of underwater slumber is unlike what we see on the surface. For mammals (哺乳动物), a good night’s sleep sends an animal into a state of unconsciousness (无知觉) during hours of restorative sleeping that helps heal the body and solidify memories firmly in the mind. For fish, however, sleep isn’t such a well-defined process. Instead, many fish species have taken to spending short periods in a state of reduced activity or rest while keeping their eyes open to scan the water for potential threats. During these periods of reduced activity, a fish’s bodily functions slow down and its watchfulness drops.
The breadth of animals in the ocean that exhibit this type of reduced activity is wide-reaching. Among the hundreds of thousands of creatures in the sea, some merely ride along with the current, such as jellyfish. Others find rocky bedrooms for the night, while those such as stingrays bury themselves in the sand to rest. However, it must be really hard to get a good night’s sleep when you breathe air but live in water. This is something that the world’s underwater mammals have to deal with.
To prevent themselves from drowning (溺死) in their sleep, underwater mammals such as dolphins and manatees have developed the ability to “turn off” one side of their brain to rest, known as unihemispheric sleep. While one side is fast asleep, the other keeps all the animal’s vital functions running, such as breathing. Manatees, for example, love to sleep, spending up to 12 hours a day in a deep slumber. However, as air-breathing animals, manatees need to surface every 20 minutes or so for oxygen. To achieve this, the half of the brain that’s still awake sends the sleeping manatee to the surface to get some air.
28.What does the underlined word “slumber” in paragraph 1 mean
A.Rest. B.Sleep. C.Danger. D.Activity.
29.Why is it hard to define sleep for fish
A.Because fish remain partially awake. B.Because fish need short resting time.
C.Because fish possess no consciousness. D.Because fish pretend not to be sleeping.
30.What is a challenge faced by underwater mammals
A.Hiding in sand. B.Riding the current.
C.Finding spots to rest. D.Breathing while sleeping.
31.How do manatees ensure their oxygen supply during sleep
A.By sleeping less. B.By adapting to the sea.
C.By surfacing periodically. D.By controlling their breath.
【答案】28.B 29.A 30.D 31.C
根据画线词所在句的下文“For mammals (哺乳动物), a good night’s sleep sends an animal into a state of unconsciousness (无知觉) during hours of restorative sleeping that helps heal the body and solidify memories firmly in the mind. For fish, however, sleep isn’t such a well-defined process.
根据第一段中“For fish, however, sleep isn’t such a well-defined process. Instead, many fish species have taken to spending short periods in a state of reduced activity or rest while keeping their eyes open to scan the water for potential threats. (然而,对于鱼类来说,睡眠并不是一个定义明确的过程。相反,许多鱼类会在短时间内减少活动或休息,同时睁大眼睛扫视水中潜在的威胁)”可知,鱼类很难定义睡眠的原因是它们会保持部分清醒。故选A项。
根据第二段中“However, it must be really hard to get a good night’s sleep when you breathe air but live in water. This is something that the world’s underwater mammals have to deal with. (然而,当你呼吸空气却生活在水中时,你一定很难睡个好觉。这是世界上的水下哺乳动物不得不面对的问题)”可知,水下哺乳动物面对的挑战是在睡觉的同时进行呼吸。故选D项。
31.细节理解题。根据最后一段中“However, as air-breathing animals, manatees need to surface every 20 minutes or so for oxygen. To achieve this, the half of the brain that’s still awake sends the sleeping manatee to the surface to get some air. (然而,作为呼吸空气的动物,海牛需要每20分钟左右浮出水面吸氧。为了达到这个目的,仍然清醒的那一半大脑会把睡着的海牛送到水面上呼吸一些空气)”可知,海牛通过定期浮出水面来证睡眠时的氧气供应。故选C项。
D
What comes to mind when you think about chocolate A candy bar at Halloween Ice cream on a hot day
For Ibrahim, a 12-year-old boy from the West African country of Ghana, chocolate is not about sweet treats; it is about bitter work. 32 But if they did, we would learn that Ibrahim spends his days growing and harvesting cocoa beans, from which chocolate is made. We would also learn that he is just one of more than two million children who perform this difficult labour instead of attending school.
To change the harmful practices like this, some farms use an approach called Fairtrade. 33 It aims to create a different relationship between buyers (chocolate companies) and sellers (cocoa farmers) by encouraging farmers to join together to form a shared business called a cooperative. Because farmers work together instead of competing with each other, they can demand a higher price from the buyers. 34
Consumers like you can play a role as well. You can buy Fairtrade chocolate if possible, pressure candy companies to change their labour practices, or ask local stores to sell Fairtrade products. 35 It is a programme recognizing schools that provide Fairtrade products in cafeterias or include related lessons in curriculum (课程).
Chocolate has a hidden story that affects children like Ibrahim—children who want a happy future just like you do. 36 By enjoying Fairtrade products or simply spreading the word, you can make chocolate as sweet for all children as it is for you.
A.You have the power to change the story.
B.The labels on chocolate do not tell his story.
C.Fairtrade is a way of doing business that prohibits child labour.
D.You can also take action through the Fairtrade Schools network.
E.On many farms, children like Ibrahim perform difficult farming tasks.
F.Cocoa trees grow in the tropical climates of Africa, Latin America and South-East Asia.
G.With more income, farmers can pay adult workers and can send their children to school.
【答案】32.B 33.C 34.G 35.D 36.A
32.上文“For Ibrahim, a 12-year-old boy from the West African country of Ghana, chocolate is not about sweet treats; it is about bitter work. (对于来自西非国家加纳的12岁男孩易卜拉欣来说,巧克力并不是甜食,而是甜点。这是关于艰苦的工作。)”指出制作巧克力是12岁男孩Ibrahim的艰辛工作,下文“But if they did, we would learn that Ibrahim spends his days growing and harvesting cocoa beans, from which chocolate is made. (但如果它们是这样,我们就会了解到易卜拉欣每天都在种植和收获可可豆,然后用可可豆制成巧克力)”是一种假设,由此可知,空处应用与下文内容相反,应该介绍我们无法了解到Ibrahim的情况,B项“巧克力上的标签并没有讲述他的故事。”符合,下文的they代指The labels on chocolate,故选B。
33.上文“To change the harmful practices like this, some farms use an approach called Fairtrade. (为了改变这样的有害做法,一些农场采用了一种称为Fairtrade的方法。)”指出为了严禁雇佣儿童,一些农场使用了叫做Fairtrade的方法,空处承接上文,对此方法进行介绍,C项“Fairtrade是一种禁止童工的经营方式。”符合,故选C。
34.上文“Because farmers work together instead of competing with each other, they can demand a higher price from the buyers.(由于农民共同工作而不是相互竞争,他们可以向买家索要更高的价格。)”
35.上文“Consumers like you can play a role as well. You can buy Fairtrade chocolate if possible, pressure candy companies to change their labour practices, or ask local stores to sell Fairtrade products.(像你这样的消费者也可以发挥作用。如果可能的话,你可以购买公平贸易巧克力,向糖果公司施加压力,要求其改变劳工惯例,或者要求当地商店销售公平贸易产品。)”可知,许多儿童从事艰巨劳动而不能上学,对此消费者可以发挥一些作用来帮助他们,上文具体提出了消费者可以做的事,空处也应是具体措施,D项“你还可以通过公平贸易学校网络采取行动。”符合,故选D。
36.上文“Chocolate has a hidden story that affects children like Ibrahim-children who want a happy future just like you do. (巧克力有一个隐藏的故事,影响着像易卜拉欣这样的孩子——他们和你一样想要幸福的未来。)”可知,从事艰巨劳动而不能上学的儿童和你一样也想要幸福的未来,下文“By enjoying Fairtrade products or simply spreading the word, you can make chocolate as sweet for all children as it is for you.(通过买公平贸易产品或只是传播这个信息,你可以让巧克力对所有孩子来说都像对你一样甜。)”
Two new community initiatives offering the opportunity to borrow everything from sewing machines to party supplies are aiming to reduce waste and consumption.
Tools n Things Library in Leederville, Perth is a community library designed to allow community members to get access to the things they might need around the house instead of buying them in a hardware (五金店) store.
“That’s our philosophy — don’t buy, borrow. Many people buy things just for a small task at home, and then they won’t use them for a couple of years,” library volunteer Rex Breheny said.
The project is run by volunteers who founded it in 2019, and after an interruption in 2020 because of the pandemic (大流行病), it has now grown to several hundred members who can come and borrow things twice a week. In a way it is a return to an old tradition of neighbors borrowing each other’s tools and forming connections in the process.
Tools n Things Library is the first of its kind in Perth, and another called Share Shed has just started in Bassendean. Its co-founder Renee McLennan said they wanted to expand beyond tools to all sorts of things that people might use rarely, like camping equipment or entertaining needs.
“We’re doing the kind of equipment you’d use for a party. Instead of everybody buying disposable plates, and cups and things like that, we’ve got quality glasses and cutlery (餐具), as well as decorations that people can use for those events that they might have once a year,” she said.
The Share Shed is being considered as a way to tackle consumer culture. The world cannot continue to support our current level of resource consumption — at present overconsumption means that each year we consume 75 per cent more than the planet can regenerate.
“Borrowing items and shifting our thinking from an ownership to an access model helps to reduce the number of things that are produced and limits waste. At the same time, sharing the things that we use every now and then is a great way of connecting with people who live locally,” Bod Anderson, an officer in Perth said.

I had run away from home after finishing high school. My parents had insisted I go to college, but I was tired of school. I hated it. I was determined not to go. And, besides, my father was too strict. I had too many chores to do around the farm. I haled the work!
There had been a quarrel between my father and me. I threw some things into a bag and left angrily, as my father shouted after me, “If you leave, don’t come back!” My mother cried openly, and I had seen those tears during a hundred sleepless nights.
Then it was time to write a letter to my father.
Dear Dad,
It’s been more than a year now. I’ve traveled east to west. I’ve had dozens of jobs. None of them amounted to very much. Always the same questions: “How much education have you got ” It seems they always want college men for the good jobs.
Dad, you and Mother were right about everything. I know now that the work on the farm didn’t hurt me, and I’m convinced I need college. I’m also convinced that both of you loved me.
Dad, I’ve learned a lesson. I want to come home. I know you said if I left, I couldn’t come back, but I’m praying you’ll change your mind. I want to come home and be a part of the family again.
Give my love to Mother and the girls.
Love,
Your son
As I folded the letter and put it into an envelope, I felt a refreshing relief. It was as if a heavy load had been lifted from my shoulders. And I had to be on my way home.
I started down the desolate road—the long road home. Fortunately, a car picked me up, and it was good to have someone to talk with. The driver was a salesman and very pleasant.
“Where you going, boy ” he asked good-naturedly.
There was a long silence before I said, “Home.”
“Been away from home long ”
I smiled, a little self-conscious, and said, “One year, one month and two days.”
注意:1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Having heard my story, he expressed his support for my final decision and told me something surprising. “Boy, you have made the right choice to go back home,” he said. “To be frank, my son ran away from home two years ago. I have been missing him every hour and every minute.” Now it’s time for me to comfort him, “Don’t worry. I believe he will come back soon, just like me.” I expressed my thanks for his kindness of having me in his car and I wished his son good luck. After all, we are all good people and good people deserve good fortune.
Finally, I arrived home when it was completely dark. Nervous and uneasy, I approached the door and knocked on it gently. It was my father who opened the door and my sudden appearance made him go wild with joy. “Son, you’ve finally come back. I’ve been waiting for this moment for long,” said my father in a trembling voice. It was at that moment that I realized there is no place like home and that blood is thicker than water.

A.Rest. B.Sleep. C.Danger. D.Activity.

30.What is a challenge faced by underwater mammals
A.Hiding in sand. B.Riding the current.
C.Finding spots to rest. D.Breathing while sleeping.
31.How do manatees ensure their oxygen supply during sleep
A.By sleeping less. B.By adapting to the sea.
C.By surfacing periodically. D.By controlling their breath.

37.Why were the initiatives launched
A.To introduce two new communities.
B.To advocate consuming fewer resources.
C.To call on people to fight against pandemic.
D.To encourage people to borrow daily necessities.
38.What do we know about the project of Tools n Things Library
A.It is out of use. B.It is well received.
C.It is out of fashion. D.It is often interrupted.
39.What’s an advantage of Share Shed over Tools n Things Library
A.Wider options. B.Better quality.
C.Longer duration. D.Newer equipment.
40.What’s Bob Anderson’s attitude to the initiatives
A.Doubtful. B.Supportive. C.Critical. D.Objective.
