M: No, thanks. I'll take the bus. But now I must walk to my office.
Text 2
M: So how did things go today. dear
W: The same old thing. Tidied up. Did some washing. Fetched the kids from school. Made dinner. Waited for you to come home. Nothing exciting.
Text 3
W: Mike, do you know that my sister Amy was admitted to Renmin University
M: Is that so Her hard work finally paid off.
Text 4
W: I am thinking about finding a second job to earn a bit of extra money.
M: Why I thought you got a raise the other day.
W: Yes. But I am still not paid well. I think I should find a part-time job as a tutor at night.
Text 5
M: Have you seen my brown hat I've been looking for it everywhere.
W: Which one You have tons of brown hats...the warm one with stars, the one with a baseball logo, the cowboy hat with...
M: I'm going skiing, so I need the warm one.
Text 6
M: Excuse me. Could you please check to see if we could stay till the day after tomorrow We've found some extra things we'd like to do in this area.
W: OK. But maybe you need to change to the second floor.
M: All right. At least we don't have to pack up again. We'd like it if we could put off our check out till Thursday morning instead of tomorrow morning.
Text 7
M: Now, this is Westminster Abbey. It's one of the oldest buildings in London, and in its architecture you will recognize different styles.
W: Wow, it's really splendid.
M: There, to the left, you will see a small street called Downing Street. No. 10, the last of its ten houses, has always been the living place of the British prime minister.
W: Oh, is that the Tower Bridge
M: Yeah. Look! The bridge is parting in the middle, and the two halves are moving upwards. A big ship is passing underneath.
Text 8
W: Hi, Mike! Could you please tell me something about your study experiences
M: OK. I studied in Australia for five years, in America for a year, and in Japan for more than three years.
W: Is that so Did you also study in your home country, Canada
M: Yes, of course. I went to primary school in Canada.
W: You've had quite a lot of experiences around the world.
M: Yes, it's been interesting.
W: So, what did you and your friends like to do for fun when you were in America
M: Well, teenagers all like to have parties, and American students like to have parties at their own houses. Every weekend different students would invite me to their places and we would have a great time.
Text 9
W: Jack, how have your two sons been doing at school recently
M: Don't ask! Mark never starts studying, and Jason never stops studying.
W: You're joking! I heard that Jason is likely to be at the top of his class after the exams this year.
M: Yes, so his teachers say. He's been buried in his books every evening for months on end recently. He is hoping to go to Harvard University.
W: Great. Maybe he'll become a university professor himself in the future.
M: Maybe. But sometimes I wish he'd go out and enjoy himself for a change.
W: How about the younger one
M: Well, Mark's teachers say he has ability, but he rarely does his best. He does his homework in ten minutes every day and then rushes out to play football.
W: But he can make his fortune at football. People can make a lot of money from sports now.
M: My wife always worries about their future. She wants Mark to study law. I don't believe in forcing them, but I wonder how Mark will progress over the next few years.
W: Perhaps you can have a talk with him now to find out what he is thinking about his studies and future plans.
M: Good idea. I'll take your advice.
Text 10
M: Good morning everybody and welcome to this class on English words. I hope that all of you can hear me. If not, please let me know. I am Professor John Morris. I'll be your teacher for the next 13 weeks. As you can probably tell, this is one of the most popular and crowded classes. Indeed, every time this course is offered, this room is full. Why is that Well, in order to use the English language, it's very important to have at least a basic understanding of how words are formed. Just to mention one figure and there are many; there are about one million words in English. If you are an English learner, you may wonder how you can possibly remember all of these words. Well, for one thing, you don't have to. No native speaker exists who knows all of the words in the English language. Besides, there are short cuts. Short cuts Yes, for example, if you know how words are formed by using parts of words from other languages, such as Greek and French, you'll understand a good number of English words when you first come across them. Let me put it this way. Knowing the rules will help you to master a large number of words. This is probably the No. 1 reason why this class is so popular.

At every wedding I attended this past year, the event space has been decorated with family portraits-black-and-white photos of grandparents, parents in 1970s hairstyles and family heirlooms (传家宝) passed down from generations.
As a child, I used to cry when looking at those reminders. When my husband suggested making a slideshow of our family photos for our wedding, I realized we barely had any. It was at that time that I understood just why these kinds of items inspired so many complicated feelings.
My grandparents immigrated from Poland to Cuba in the 1930s. During the Cuban Revolution, their business and home were shut down. The family came to the United States in 1968, leaving everything but a few pieces of clothing behind. My grandparents and mother responded to the pain they had experienced by holding on to things.
Today, when my mother comes to visit, she still brings bags full of useful items even if we have plenty of food. A full cupboard, a house stocked with usable objects, is the ultimate expression of love.
Like many who are privileged (幸运) enough not to have to worry about having basic things, I tended to admire the opposite — the empty spaces of yoga studios, the delightful feeling of sorting through a pile of stuff that I could abandon.
Now that my brother and I have come of age, my parents have both expressed a desire to downsize our possessions. I went through the things that mattered most to me: the books I loved as a child; the CDs made by friends; the college textbooks I never remembered to return. They say that we can appreciate the objects we used to love deeply just by saying goodbye to them. But I didn’t want to give any of them up because they filled with memories of a person I once was, and a person that part of me always will be.
24. The author realized the meaning of family old items when .

THE GLOBAL WASTE TRADE IS ESSENTIALLY BROKEN
Cut into hillside in northern Malaysia stands a large, open-air warehouse. This is a recycling factory, which opened last November. On a very hot afternoon in January, Shahid Ali was working his very first week on the job. He stood knee-deep in soggy, white bits of plastic. Around him, more bits floated of the conveyor belt and fell to the ground like snowflakes.
Hour after hour, Ali sorts through the plastic jumble moving down the belt, picking out pieces that look off-color or soiled-rejects (废品) in the recycling process. Though it looks like backbreaking work, Ali says it is a great improvement over his previous job, folding bed-sheets in a nearby textile factory, for much lower pay. Now, if he eats simply, he can save money from his wages of just over $l an hour and send $250 a month to his parents and six brothers and sisters in Peshawar, Pakistan, 2,700 miles away, “As soon as I heard about this work, I asked for a job,” says Ali, 24, a bearded man with glasses and an easy smile. Still, he’s working 12 hours a day, seven days a week. “If I take a day off, I lose a day’s wages,” he says.
In the warehouse, hundreds of bags are stacked more than 60 feet high-each stuffed with plastic wrappers and bags thrown away weeks earlier by their original users in California. The fact that the waste has traveled to this distant corner of the planet in the first place shows how badly the global recycling economy has failed to keep pace with humanity’s plastics addiction. This is an ecosystem that is deeply dysfunctional, if not on the point of collapse: About 90% of the millions of tons of plastic the world produces every year will eventually end up not recycled, but burned, buried, or dumped.
Plastic recycling enjoys ever-wider support among consumers: Putting yogurt containers and juice bottles in a blue bin is an eco-friendly act of faith in millions of households. But faith goes only so far. The tidal wave of plastic items that enters the recycling stream each year is increasingly likely to fall right back out again, casualties of a broken market. Many products that consumers believe (and industries claim) are “recyclable" are in reality not, because of hard economics. With oil and gas prices near 20-year lows, so-called virgin plastic, a product of petroleum feed-stocks, is now far cheaper and easier to obtain than recycled material. That unforeseen shift has yanked the financial rug out from under what was until recently a practical recycling industry. “The global waste trade is essentially broken,” says the head of the global plastics campaign at Greenpeace. “We are sitting on vast amounts of plastic with nowhere to send it and nothing to do with it.”
28. What is the author’s attitude towards Shahid Ali
A. Critical. B. Merciless. C. Indifferent. D. Sympathetic.
29. What most probably causes the problem of global waste recycling
A. The prices of oil and gas have been increasing.
B. Tons of wastes travel so far before being recycled.
C. Recyclable products are not really recycled.
D. Governments don’t support the recycling industry.
30. What does the italicized word “dysfunctional” mean in the passage
A. Out of stock. B. Far from pleased. C. Full of energy. D. Out of order.
31. What is the author’s purpose of writing this article
A. To illustrate how plastic waste has been recycled in the world.
B. To warn people that the global waste trade is essentially broken.
C. To analyze the relationship between consumers and factories.
D. To solve the conflict between the recycling industry and governments.
D 29. C 30. D 31. B
根据第一段“On a very hot afternoon in January, Shahid Ali was working his very first week on the job. He stood knee-deep in soggy, white bits of plastic. Around him, more bits floated of the conveyor belt and fell to the ground like snowflakes.(1月一个非常炎热的下午,沙希德·阿里正在工作的第一周。他站在齐膝深的湿漉漉的白色塑料碎片里。在他周围,更多的碎片从传送带上飘下来,像雪花一样落在地上)”以及第二段“Hour after hour, Ali sorts through the plastic jumble moving down the belt, picking out pieces that look off-color or soiled-rejects (废品) in the recycling process. “If I take a day off, I lose a day’s wages,” he says.(一个小时又一个小时,阿里在垃圾传送带上的塑料垃圾中进行分类,挑出那些看起来颜色不佳或在回收过程中被弄脏的垃圾。
根据最后一段“Many products that consumers believe (and industries claim) are “recyclable" are in reality not, because of hard economics.(许多消费者相信(以及行业声称)的产品是“可回收的”,但由于经济原因,实际上并非如此)”可知,可回收产品并不是真正的回收最有可能导致全球废物回收的问题。故选C。
根据划线词上文“The fact that the waste has traveled to this distant corner of the planet in the first place shows how badly the global recycling economy has failed to keep pace with humanity’s plastics addiction.(垃圾从一开始就来到地球上这个遥远的角落,这一事实表明,全球循环经济无法跟上人类对塑料的依赖)”以及后文“About 90% of the millions of tons of plastic the world produces every year will eventually end up not recycled, but burned, buried, or dumped.(全球每年生产的数百万吨塑料中,约有90%最终没有被回收利用,而是被焚烧、掩埋或倾倒)”可知,全球循环经济无法跟上人类对塑料的依赖,因此这个系统已经失调了,不再正常运转,故划线词意思是“机能失调的”,与Out of order(不工作,损坏:指不能正常工作或使用)意思相近。故选D。
根据第三段“The fact that the waste has traveled to this distant corner of the planet in the first place shows how badly the global recycling economy has failed to keep pace with humanity’s plastics addiction. This is an ecosystem that is deeply dysfunctional, if not on the point of collapse: About 90% of the millions of tons of plastic the world produces every year will eventually end up not recycled, but burned, buried, or dumped.(垃圾从一开始就来到地球上这个遥远的角落,这一事实表明,全球循环经济无法跟上人类对塑料的依赖。这是一个严重失调的生态系统,如果不是濒临崩溃:全球每年生产的数百万吨塑料中,约有90%最终不会被回收利用,而是被焚烧、掩埋或倾倒)”结合文章通过Shahid Ali捡垃圾为引入,说明
了全球垃圾贸易基本上已经崩溃的事实。由此推知,作者写这篇文章的目的是警告人们,全球垃圾贸易基本上已经破裂。故选B。
D
Students at the Calhoun School in New York City have much more than a roof over their heads. They have a rooftop garden, with lush grass, colorful flowers and fragrant herbs. “Green roofs” are sprouting up all over, from schools to city skyscrapers. And roofs aren’t the only things going green. Architects are finding all sorts of new ways to build buildings that are easier on the environment. These schools, homes, and offices are called “green buildings”.
Normally it takes a lot of energy to run appliances. Too often, that energy comes from burning fossil fuels. So green buildings are designed to do all these things with much less energy. An energy-smart building starts with thick walls. A layer of insulation (隔热材料) traps air to stop heat from passing through. That keeps heat inside in the winter, and keeps heat outside in the summer. This saves energy for heating and cooling.
Heat pumps are another power-saving way to stay comfortable. A ground heat pump moves heat through pipes that run through the ground next to the building. A few feet under the ground, the temperature stays around 10℃ all year round. Water flowing around the pipes helps heat the building in winter and cool it in summer.
Another way to build green is to use recycled materials. That saves the cost and pollution of manufacturing something new. In the Chicago Center for Green Technology, the ceiling tiles (瓷砖) are made of pressed newspaper. The bathroom floors are tiled with recycled glass, and the stall walls are recycled plastic. Builders have found many creative ways to re-use old materials.
As more people become concerned about climate change, more buildings are going green. Green buildings produce less of the gases that warm the planet. City planners like green buildings because they save money. And they are healthier for the people who work and live inside. But you don’t need to build a whole new building. Simple changes like shading windows and planting trees can make any home greener—and a better Earth home for us all.
32. How are green buildings designed to keep warm in the winter
A. By-burning fossil fuels. B. By using thick walls with insulators.
C. By running heating devices. D. By equipping buildings with appliances.
33. According to the passage, the advantages of green buildings include the following EXCEPT________.
A. saving water B. using recycled materials
C. using less energy D. reducing greenhouse gas emissions
34. In which section of a magazine can we read the text
A. Education. B. Culture. C. Economy. D. Technology.
35. Which of the following might be the best title for the text
A. Recycling: to make a better earth for us all
B. Heat Pumps: a new approach to saving energy
C. Green Roofs: more than a roof over our heads
D. Building Green: to hug the earth more kindly
B 33. A 34. D 35. D
根据文章第二段“So green buildings are designed to do all these things with much less energy. An energy-smart building starts with thick walls. A layer of insulation (隔热材料) traps air to stop heat from passing through. That keeps heat inside in the winter, and keeps heat outside in the summer.(所以绿色建筑的设计就是要用更少的能源来做所有这些事情。节能建筑从厚墙开始。一层绝缘层可以隔绝空气,阻止热量通过。这样就能在冬天保持室内的热量,在夏天保持室外的热量)”可知,绿色建筑设计通过使用带有绝缘体的厚墙在冬天保持温暖。故选B项。
33. 细节理解题。根据文章第二段“So green buildings are designed to do all these things with much less energy.(所以绿色建筑的设计就是要用更少的能源来做所有这些事情)”及第四段“Another way to build green is to use recycled materials.(另一种绿色建筑的方法是使用回收材料)”及最后一段“Green buildings produce less of the gases that warm the planet.(绿色建筑产生的使地球变暖的气体较少)”可知,绿色建筑的好处包括使用回收材料,使用更少的能源和减少温室气体排放。 故选A项。
根据文章第二段“Too often, that energy comes from burning fossil fuels. So green buildings are designed to do all these things with much less energy. An energy-smart building starts with thick walls. A layer of insulation (隔热材料) traps air to stop heat from passing through. That keeps heat inside in the winter, and keeps heat outside in the summer.(通常,这些能量来自燃烧化石燃料。所以绿色建筑的设计就是要用更少的能源来做所有这些事情。节能建筑从厚墙开始。一层绝缘层可以隔绝空气,阻止热量通过。这样就能在冬天保持室内的热量,在夏天保持室外的热量)”及全文介绍绿色建筑的好处可知,本文主要介绍通过科技的方法来修建“绿色”建筑;由此推知,本文最有可能出现在杂志的科技一部分。故选D项。
35. 主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合最后一段“City planners like green buildings because they save money. And they are healthier for the people who work and live inside. But you don’t need to build a whole new building. Simple changes like shading windows and planting trees can make any home greener—and a better Earth home for us all.(城市规划者喜欢绿色建筑,因为它们能省钱。对于在里面工作和生活的人来说,它们更健康。但你不需要建一座全新的大楼。简单的改变,如遮阳窗户和种树,可以使任何一个家庭更环保,为我们所有人创造一个更美好的地球家园)”可知,文章介绍了如何进行绿色建筑及其对于地球环境的好处,D选项“绿色建筑:更亲切地拥抱地球”适合最为最佳标题。故选D项。

阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When he was around 5-6 years old, my brother Ted, who is four years younger to me, suddenly found his legs unable to move one night. What followed was one of the hardest times of my parents'life. Months passed with them meeting various doctors, visiting different hospitals, and knocking at the doorstep of every possible chance — all the time with Ted in their arms, since he wasn't able to walk on his own anymore.
There were doubts of permanent paralysis(瘫痪)— the very mention of which was enough to break us down. From finding it extremely painful to walk, to not being able to get up on his own, and to not being able to stand at all, Ted's problem was worsening day by day. Most surprisingly, all this while, he was as strong as, perhaps, only children can be in such difficult times.
During this period, it was not unusual for my mother to have sudden breakdowns. Once, she burst into tears while watching Ted playing joyfully. He wiped off her tears, and said, “Don't cry, mummy. See, I can stand and even run on my own!” Saying this, he tried to get up, stood on shaking legs for just about a few microseconds and fell down, only to be safely caught in the arms of my mom, who hugged him dearly and cried some more.
This was the most heart-breaking thing that I had ever experienced. But it was also a powerful one for the simple fact that it was my little brother who taught us what life was all about—HOPE.
Witnessing my brother's strong will and positive attitude inspired me as well. As a brother, I could not stand by doing nothing at all. Hope was burning in my heart when I had the idea to train my brother to walk again. I firmly believe Ted could stand up and walk as he used to. Whenever school was over, I would put Ted into a pushchair and tell my mom that we'd just go to the park.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
In the park, I would put Ted one meter away from me, encouraging him to walk.

We agreed to keep this a secret from our parents until mom's birthday.
_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
In the park, I would put Ted one meter away from me, encouraging him to walk. His initial attempts were shaky, and he would often fall in my arms after just a couple of steps. I kept telling him that each small step was a victory. During that tough time, we had gone through countless days of helplessness, breakdowns and despair. We celebrated every attempt and every inch forward, becoming full of hope for the future. I knew that this was more than just physical training, it was a lesson in perseverance for both of us. Gradually, His legs began to gain strength, and his falls became less frequent.
We agreed to keep this a secret from our parents until mom's birthday. We wanted to give her the most memorable gift—a miracle we had been working on. As the day approached, Ted's steps became more confident and his falls became fewer. On mom's birthday, we led our parents to the living room where Ted was waiting, standing on his own. With a signal, he started walking towards mom, his every step a testament to his incredible courage. The look of shock and joy on our parents' faces was indescribable. Tears streamed down my mom's cheeks as she watched Ted walk into her arms. It was a moment of triumph, a celebration of hope, and the best birthday present we could have ever given. Our secret training had paid off, and Ted's journey was a reminder to all of us that hope, combined with action, can lead to miracles.

C. They reminded her of the old days.
D. They were no longer available anywhere.
27. What can we infer from this text
A. Lost time won’t return any longer.
B. A picture is worth a thousand words.
C. Some sort of stuff is worth keeping.
D. It’s never too late to make a change.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
In the park, I would put Ted one meter away from me, encouraging him to walk.
