William Lindesay, a famous Great Wall expert and conservationist, and his wife Wu Qi have traveled the globe, providing their sons with a unique growing environment. Sun hats, backpacks and sneakers(运动鞋)—these are the day-to-day must-haves for the family.
Most of their trips seem far from relaxing—cultural study in the hot and dry desert, a 53-kilometer hiking tour of New Zealand, a one-day climb to three English mountaintops and a six-day train ride from Beijing to Moscow.
Many assume the family must be wealthy and can afford their global travel, but they are not. Lindesay says they just choose to spend money on travel and eschew price y hotels and restaurants when possible. Lindesay mentions the trip to Moscow as an example. Instead of taking a taxi from the railway station to the hotel, they took the subway. “We crossed the city for saving money, communicated with local people, and saw they were people just like us. We arrived at our destination feeling comfortable.”
However, their journeys, which can last weeks or months, have sometimes been inconsistent with their children's schooling. Wu remembers once Lindesay let their elder son ask for leave so that they could go to New York for a 45-day lecture tour. Therefore the son missed his final exam. Things like that bother the family all the time.
Lindesay attaches great importance to learning out of the classroom, saying that children might score well on school tests, but traveling outside, in distant lands with different languages, cultures and political structures, is the real test. “You can only get streetwise on the street. You can only get worldly-wise when seeing the world,” he says.
24. How can we describe the Lindesays'trips
A. Pleasant. B. Challenging. C. Conventional. D. Dangerous.
25. What does the underlined word “eschew” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Avoid. B. Visit. C. Compare. D. Evaluate.
26. What problem does the family meet according to paragraph 4
A. They suffer from a tight budget. B. They have scheduling conflicts.
C. They are faced with language barriers. D. They hold different educational ideas.
27. Which statement may Lindesay agree with according to the text
A. Toughness is the best assistant of will. B. There is no royal road to learning.
C. Actions speak louder than words. D. Man who travels far knows more.

A new study led by researchers at the University of California, Riverside, has found exposure to third-hand smoke (THS) causes skin diseases.
The study—the first to look at humans exposed to THS —involved 10 healthy non-smokers wearing clothing with either filtered(过滤的) air or THS chemicals. The investigation lasted three hours, during which participants would either walk or run for 15 minutes per hour — this would make them sweat and increase the levels of THS potentially taken in through the skin. Blood samples were collected, which were measured to see whether THS may have caused cell or tissue damage.
“We found THS exposure caused damage to DNA, lipids(脂质), and proteins, and the damage remained even after the exposure stopped,” said Shane Sakamaki-Ching, a doctor of biology and the first author of the study. “Cigarette smokers show the same result.” The study showed exposure to THS increases signals related with skin diseases, which makes sense: the organ most likely to come into contact with THS is your skin, and so it receives the biggest exposure to the harmful chemicals. “However, what's even more worrying is the tendency to lead to cancer,” added Sakamaki-Ching.
“If you buy a used car previously owned by a smoker, you are putting yourself at some health risk,” said Prue Talbot, a professor of cell biology at UC Riverside and the corresponding author of the study. “If you go to a restaurant that allows smoking, you are exposing your skin to THS. The same applies to staying in a hotel room that was previously occupied by a smoker.”
All that came from just three hours' investigation. And if you think e-cigarette smokers are being forgotten, fear not: the team's next project is to take a look at which remains are left by these less-deadly death sticks.
Sakamaki-Ching said, “Our findings can help physicians in checking patient s exposed to THS and help develop policies improving indoor environments polluted by THS.”
28. Why were the participants in the study asked to take exercise
A. To keep themselves energetic. B. To speed up blood production.
C. To do away with THS by sweating. D. To have their skin absorb more THS.
29. What can we learn from paragraph 3
A. THS is likely to cause skin cancer.
B. Cigarette smokers suffer more from THS.
C. The tendency to lead to cancer worries smokers.
D. The damage caused by THS remains until the exposure stops.
30. What message does Prue Talbot want to convey in paragraph 4
A. Public places should ban smoking entirely. B. THS can be widely found in our daily life.
C. Non-smokers must keep off smokers for health. D. Sharing is a bad habit and should be abandoned.
31. Which of the following could be the best title for the text
A. Ways to Prevent Skin Diseases Worsening
B. A Campaign to Be Proposed to Ban THS
C. THS Can Cause Skin Diseases
D. New Study Reveals the Potential Harm of Smoking
D
The 31,000-year-old skeleton(骨骼) of a young adult found in Indonesia reveals the oldest known evidence of an amputation(截肢), according to a new study.
“We were exploring a cave in Borneo, in a rainforest region, for some of the earliest rock art in the world, when we came across the burial site and the skeleton, which then excited our curiosity,” said Tim Maloney, the study's lead researcher. Though much of the skeleton was complete, it missed its left foot and the lower part of its left leg, he explained. After examining the remains, the researchers concluded the foot bones weren't lost in the site or in an accident — they were carefully removed. The remaining leg bone showed a clean cut.
Researchers believed the find presents a remarkable deed. It's tricky and demanding to prevent infection in amputations, even to this day. Yet more than 30,000 years ago someone was able to handle it. Researchers didn't know what tool was used to cut the body parts, but they assumed a sharp stone tool may have made the cut. What seems certain is that the patient enjoyed great post-operative care for considerable time, for the person appeared to have lived for around six to nine more years after being disabled.
The operation's good end result is not pure chance. It implies that the person who performed the operation had some understanding of antimicrobial(抗菌的) medicine. In this respect, their lifestyle and forest environment might have proved to be advantages. “Given these people lived in an area with many medicinal plants, there is a strong case to guess that adapting to this environment may have boosted the development of advanced medical knowledge,” Maloney said.
The surgery rewrites the history of human medical developments. Before this find, the earliest example of amputation had been in a French farmer from almost 7,000 years ago. Researchers had believed advanced medical practice developed around 10,000 years ago, as humans settled down into agricultural societies. But this study adds to evidence that humans started caring for each other's health long before that.
32. What did Maloney say about the skeleton
A. It is preserved poorly. B. It is found by accident.
C. It needs further study. D. It shows ancient wisdom.
33. Which part of the amputation is difficult according to the researchers
A. Seeking proper tools. B. Keeping the cut clean.
C. Avoiding the infection. D. Providing post-operative care.
34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. Reasons for the surgery's success. B. Geographical features of Borneo.
C. Knowledge of plants'medicinal use. D. Benefits of the forest environment.
35. What does the discovery of the skeleton show
A. Borne o is the source of surgical amputation.
B. Amputation is common for prehistoric people.
C. Ancient agriculture promoted medical development.
D. Humans made advanced medical practice earlier than thought.
Vacation often starts with a wonderful idea. 36 With a little bit of preparation and effort, travelers can overcome 90% of the difficulties they may face during a trip. Here are useful tips on how to plan a trip.
Picking the right destination according to the season is a key factor in planning a trip successfully. 37 Usually, the ideal season to visit beaches, mountain s and forests is completely different. Also take the cost factor into consideration. Going to a luxury destination during the shoulder season can result in some good discounts on hotels and flights.
Another key aspect of a good trip planning is to correctly estimate the number of days required. 38 Some travelers like to see new cities every day, whereas some prefer taking it slow. You’d better leave an empty day in travel plans in which there are more than 7 days so that things like terrible weather won't mess up the whole arrangement.
39 Prices of flights and accommodations rise over time if you are planning for a vacation that falls during the peak season of that particular destination. So making a reservation a few months in advance will help you avoid additional costs.
Pack wisely and do necessary research. An extra shirt, sweater, or jumper can prove handy during trips where the weather is expected to be cold or rainy. As responsible tourists, travelers must know the destination they are visiting. 40 Because it helps them avoid conflict or disrespect to the locals.
A. Early booking is recommended.
B. Learn about the do's and don's.
C. Make the most of every traveling day.
D. But not everyone has a reasonable vacation plan.
E. It often depends on the travel plans and purpose.
F. Check out the best time to visit the place you like.
G. Something unexpected, however, makes it end up being a trouble.

Priscilla and I had been classmates for several years but we never really liked each other. We had different groups of friends. Priscilla's friends were very good at sports while my friends and I performed well in our studies. Priscilla was our school's top athlete and was constantly praised by our teachers. I was jealous of her athletic abilities and her popularity at school. Maliciously(怀有恶意地), I thought she was just manipulating the teachers and her friends with her charm. I felt she was an insincere and shallow person. Therefore, I wanted to have nothing to do with her.
One afternoon, our class attended an adventure camp. One of the activities we participated in was rock climbing. I was very keen to learn rock climbing. We practiced first on a rock climbing wall, and once we had mastered the skills, we could go on to climb the cliff in the forest reserve. Rock climbers must work with a partner. While one person climbs, the partner must hold on tightly to the other end of the rope for safety. If the climber falls, the partner is responsible for stopping the fall.
The trainer assigned Priscilla to be my partner! I was very upset. How could I trust Priscilla She would not stop me from falling. She would probably wish that I would fall. However, there was nothing I could do because the trainer wouldn't allow us to change partners. So I climbed and Priscilla held on to the safety rope.
While climbing, a wave of joy and confidence came over me. I cautiously made my way up the wall, caught each notch(凹槽) above tightly, and pulled myself up. Every muscle in my body was shaking from the strain of climbing but I wanted to prove to everyone that I was a better rock climber than Priscilla. Thinking about outperforming Priscilla, my focus on climbing left me as I reached for a notch that was too far from my reach. I took a risk and jumped up to grab it.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
The next thing I knew was that I was falling down quickly. Fortunately, Priscilla came to the rescue just in time.

A篇
Oh Give Me a Biome (生物群落)部分中的“look at how animals develop over time and are adapted to living in each”可知,在这个活动项目中,学生们可以研究动物是如何随着时间的推移而进化并适应每一个生物群落的。
根据画线词前的“Many assume the family must be wealthy and can afford their global travel, but they are not. Lindesay says they just choose to spend money on travel”和下文的“pricey hotels and restaurants when possible”可知,William Lindesay的家庭并不富裕,他们只是选择把钱花在旅行上,再结合下文William Lindesay提到的例子可以推断出,画线词所在句子指的是“尽可能避开昂贵的酒店和餐馆”。 故选A。
根据第四段中的“However, their journeys, which can last weeks or months, have sometimes been inconsistent with their children’s schooling.”
根据第二段中的“... this would make them sweat and increase the levels of THS potentially taken in through the skin.”
THS increases signals related with skin diseases ...”及“... what’s even more worrying is the tendency to lead to cancer ...” 故选A。
根据第二段中的“We were exploring a cave in Borneo ... when we came across the burial site and the skeleton, which then excited our curiosity”可知,研究人员因寻找世界上最早的一些岩石艺术而在婆罗洲探索一个洞穴时,偶然发现了那副骨骼。故选B。
根据第三段中的“It’s tricky and demanding to prevent infection in amputations, even to this day. Yet more than 30,000 years ago someone was able to handle it.”
故选A。
根据最后一段中的“Researchers had believed advanced medical practice ... humans started caring for each other’s health long before that.”
E项中的“It”指代上文的“the number of days”。故选E。
故选A。

Paragraph 1:
The next thing I knew was that I was falling down quickly. My heart was pounding as I hit the side of the wall. My ears rang and my head spun with the sudden impact. My fingers were bleeding and I scraped (擦伤) my ankles. Fortunately, the helmet I was wearing saved me from seriously hurting myself. As I was fighting to grab hold of any notch on the wall to recover my balance, wild thoughts began flashing through my mind. I was scared that I might crash to the ground and die.
Paragraph 2:
Fortunately, Priscilla came to the rescue just in time. She securely held on to the safety rope and encouraged me to keep going. She knew that I wanted to reach the top of the wall more than anything. When I finally succeeded in my quest, she used the safety rope to lower me gently to the ground. I had been so wrong about Priscilla’s personality. I felt ashamed of my malicious thoughts of her. She was really a kind-hearted person. From that moment forward, we became best friends.

Text 10
W: How do things get their names That is not always an easy question to answer. There are many different ways. Today let’s look at how two things got their names.
Many people associate kiwifruit with New Zealand, but this fruit is actually native to China. China is the top producer of kiwifruit. A teacher from New Zealand took it from China in 1904. Then in 1959, a New Zealand company wanted to ship the fruit abroad. They named it kiwi after their national bird. By the 1970s, everyone was calling the fruit by that name.
Next, let’s talk about zippers. What would we do without zippers This clever little invention is used to fasten many different things. Zippers were developed by several people over many years starting in 1851. During that time, the device had a number of names. Finally in 1923, an American company named a “zipper” and trademarked it. The word zipper comes from the sound it makes when it opens or closes. However, the company lost its trademark in 1930 when zipper became popular as a general term. Nowadays ninety percent of zippers are produced by a Japanese company called YKK.
