阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

I played on the high school basketball team. I played the ball before the game started, and then sat on the bench (长凳) cheering for guys who were actually going to play in the game. When we won, I hugged (拥抱) my teammates.
I enjoyed that. But I didn’t know how my dad felt about my role. I imagined it was hard for him. Dad was a gifted athlete. And my older brothers were sports stars at college. I was not sure how he felt about going to games to watch his son SIT. Still, Dad was always there in his suit and tie. After the game, he’d come up to me, smile, shake my hand and say “Good game!”, even though I did nothing to make the game good. It changed until the last game of the season.
It was a great day for our team — we were up by about 20 with two minutes left. The coach suddenly looked towards me and said, “Walker! You’re in!” The next two minutes seemed not real to me. I remember running up and down the field a few times. When someone started counting down the last seconds, my teammate passed the ball to me. I heard guys on the bench shouting “Shoot (投篮)!” as I faced the basket and shot. We won. But then I didn’t know what to do. I was unprepared for a time when I had hit a last second shot. Naturally, I looked for Dad. He was there, smiling at me as he always did.
Whether good times or bad, Dad was always there to smile, to support and to love. Now I’m in my 50s with a teenage basketball player in my family. I keep trying to be there, no matter what, because I know what it can mean.

Al Larson, also known as “The Bluebird Man”, first began his labor of love after he read an article that described how building birdhouses could help to control their falling populations. After seeing a bluebird going in and out of a dead tree in his yard, Larson became inspired to start setting up little boxes that could serve as nests (鸟窝) for bluebirds.
What started as a hobby in his retirement turned into a full-time effort — and after almost forty years of devotion, he has recorded over 30,000 bluebirds, thanks to the 350 birdhouses that he has built across southwest Idaho. He often travels over 5,000 miles to check on all of his boxes during the summer nesting season.
Since bluebirds live in dead or nearly-dead trees, their population began to drop after the invention of the electric chainsaw (链锯) in the early 1900s, which made it easier for homeowners to remove their dead trees. In addition to having their habitats destroyed, the use of pesticides (杀虫剂) caused an uncertain future for the bluebirds of Idaho. But the efforts of Larson have shown us that if we take a moment to understand the needs of a species, we’ll find a way to deal with the problem. Though he is nearing the age of 97, Larson shows no signs of slowing down. Also, his inspiring story has been turned into a documentary Bluebird Man.
“Al is a living example of how much one person can achieve when they set their mind on a task. But he’s also an example of the benefits that a project like this can have for people,” filmmaker Matthew Podolsky said. “Bluebirds have given meaning to Al’s life, and they are truly the secret to his long life.”

Professor Paul Hughes says the way we talk to ourselves and about ourselves to other people can affect our life in many ways, from our career to our family life. He saw this firsthand while teaching at a community college.
He noticed that some students who studied hard and came to class every day still did poorly in exams. They are filled with angst about taking a test. Hughes used one of his students as an example. Lindsay was a good student. She came to class early, took part in discussions and did all of her homework. However, she did poorly in exams. When Hughes asked her how she felt before a test, she told him she was very nervous. She wondered why she had trouble remembering what she had learned. She said she did not trust that she knew the right answers.
Hughes took Lindsay’s negative statements and turned them into positive questions. Before a test, he told Lindsay to say to herself: Why am I so relaxed when I take an exam Why am I so focused during my exam Why do I remember everything I study for an exam Why do I trust my answers
Lindsay took his advice. Two weeks later, she took an exam and scored 15 points higher than she had in an earlier exam. Four weeks later, she got a “B” in the final exam.
After Lindsay left the community college and went to a four-year university, she continued to use the method of positive self-talk. She got straight A’s in all of her exams. Hughes saw student after student succeed with his method. They got more than just good test scores. They got their selfconfidence back.
Hughes does not just help his students. He also uses his positive self-talk method to help his friends and neighbors. In a television interview, he summed it up this way, “We can program ourselves for failure in class or in life, but we can also program ourselves for success.”

Many of us are lonelier than ever. We can go shopping and avoid speaking to a single person. Automated voice son phones and machines suck the contact and relational element out of day-to-day life, so much so that experts say that we are experiencing a loneliness disease.
According to Dr. Lalitaa, loneliness is the feeling we get when our need for rewarding social contact and relationships is not met. But loneliness is not always the same as being alone. Loneliness is a state of mind linked to wanting human contact but feeling alone. People can be alone and not feel lonely, or they can have contact with people and still experience feelings of loneliness.
Loneliness is a universal human emotion that is both complex and unique to each individual. There are many contributing factors to loneliness, such as illness, relationships breaking down, moving country, changing jobs or not being understood by co-workers, retiring, starting university, etc.
We cannot underestimate the impact loneliness can have on our physical and mental wellbeing. According to research, loneliness has comparable health risks to smoking 15cigarettes a day, and people who feel lonely are more likely to die earlier and suffer from heart attacks. Dr. Lalitaa says, “People often say to me, ‘It’s too late to meet new people as an adult.’ Having human connect ion can look different for each person, but this can become a block, stopping them going out, trying new things and connecting with new people. Remember, it is never too late to make good, meaningful connections.”
However, don’t put pressure on yourself. A meaningful relationship takes time. It is not just created overnight. Also, take some time to sit with yourself and venture (冒险) into some of the things that you like doing. “The first thing I would say is not to deny or distance the feeling. Acknowledge it and then you can choose to focus on ways to help yourself,” says Dr.Lalitaa.
32. How does the author clarify what loneliness is
A By stating arguments. B. By giving examples.
C. By making comparisons. D. By employing figures.
33. Why is smoking cigarettes mentioned in the text
A. To explain the causes of loneliness.
B To illustrate the harm from loneliness.
C. To overestimate the impact of loneliness.
D. To emphasize the universality of loneliness.
34. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Lack of appealing reward.
B. Dependence on the network.
C. The regret for the passing youth.
D. The idea of being too late for new relations.
35. What does Dr. Lalitaa consider as priority when dealing with loneliness
A. Having new experience.
B. Telling it from being alone.
C. Being aware of and recognizing it.
D. Making friends from all walks of life.

32. How does the author clarify what loneliness is
A. By stating arguments. B. By giving examples.
C. By making comparisons. D. By employing figures.
33. Why is smoking cigarettes mentioned in the text
A. To explain the causes of loneliness.
B. To illustrate the harm from loneliness.
【答案】32. C 33. B 34. D 35. C
【解析】

【详解】1. 推理判断题。根据第二段“According to Dr. Lalitaa, loneliness is the feeling we get when our need for rewarding social contact and relationships is not met. But loneliness is not always the same as being alone. Loneliness is a state of mind linked to wanting human contact but feeling alone. People can be alone and not feel lonely, or they can have contact with people and still experience feelings of loneliness.(根据Lalitaa博士的说法,孤独是当我们对社会接触和人际关系的奖励需求没有得到满足时产生的感觉。但是孤独并不总是和孤独一样。孤独是一种想要与人接触但又感到孤独的精神状态。人们可以独处而不感到孤独,也可以与人接触而仍然感到孤独。)”可知,作者通过把孤寂和孤独做对比,澄清了孤寂的概念。故选C。
2. 推理判断题。根据第四段中“We cannot underestimate the impact loneliness can have on our physical and mental wellbeing. According to research, loneliness has comparable health risks to smoking 15 cigarettes a day(我们不能低估孤独对我们身心健康的影响。根据研究,孤独对健康的危害与每天吸15支烟相当)”可知,孤寂对身心的影响相当于每天吸15只香烟。由此可推知,文中谈及吸烟是为了说明孤寂的危害。故选B。
3. 词句猜测题。根据第四段中“People often say to me, ‘ It’s too late to meet new people as an adult.’ Having human connect ion can look different for each person, but this can become a block, stopping them going out, trying new things and connecting with new people.(“人们经常对我说,‘作为一个成年人,现在结识新朋友已经太晚了。“人与人之间的联系对每个人来说可能看起来都不一样,但这可能会成为一个障碍,阻止他们出门、尝试新事物、与新人交往。”)”可推知,this指人们认为的成年人再去结交人太晚了这一观点。故选D。
4. 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“‘The first thing I would say is not to deny or distance the feeling. Acknowledge it and then you can choose to focus on ways to help yourself,’ says Dr. Lalitaa.( “我要说的第一件事是,不要否认或疏远这种感觉。承认这一点,然后你就可以选择专注于帮助自己的方法,”拉利塔博士说。)”可知,Dr.Lalitaa 认为在采取办法应对孤寂前首先需要考虑的是承认孤寂的存在。故选C。

One day, one of their teachers, Mr. Smith, arranged an exam for them and a boy, Robert, signed his exam paper using Anna’s name. And Robert also changed Anna’s name for his own immediately after Anna handed in her exam paper. Robert did all this so quickly that nobody noticed it. So, when the teacher returned all the exam papers, everybody was shocked. Anna was sad to find that she had failed the exam, but all the other kids were happy with this.
The next day when Anna arrived at school, all the kids wanted to be with her and invited her to play with them. Surprised though Anna was, she was glad to enjoy their company. When Anna was playing happily with the other children, all of a sudden, the teacher appeared to inform her that there had been a mistake r and that she hadn’t failed.
The teacher explained to all of them what had happened. On hearing the truth, the other kids all stopped playing with Anna at once.
One day, the First Lady of the United States went to visit the school. She wanted to meet every child in the school. 【答案】The First Lady was saddened to hear this. She managed to calm Anna down before asking her to share with her all the unpleasant things that had happened to her at school. After Anna finished, the First Lady told her that it was necessary for her to pour out her feelings whenever something unhappy happened to her. She also suggested Anna make good use of her excellent academic achievements to help her classmates with their study, saying that she could eventually develop real friendships with them. Then the First Lady told Anna’s classmates stories about her childhood that were similar to Anna’s.
After hearing the First Lady’s speech, all the children realized that they had been rude to Anna. They felt regretful and realized that they should have been happy to have a friend that got such good marks and made such a big effort at school. Then they made up their minds to follow Anna’s example and their hard work paid off. Their marks began to improve little by little. And between classes they always played together without ignoring Anna. From then on they were very happy and learned the lesson of respecting others.
