Passage 1

I met the man of the trees in summer ten years ago, when I was visiting Uncle Jita.
Those were difficult times.People were cutting down our forest, and there was often flooding.Sometimes our water supply was dirty. When our pump(抽水机)did have clean water,we had to wait in line for ages. When the pump wasn't working,we had to walk five kilometers to the closest stream.
But I was happy.I was going to see my favorite uncle. When the day finally arrived,Dad drove me to Uncle Jita's house and left.Once he saw me,Uncle Jita announced,“Tomorrow we're going to explore a magical place. Here is my camera,Amy.You can take photos of what you see.”
The following day,we woke up and left early on a boat. The trip was exciting. But when we got off the boat, there was nothing in front of us.“I don't want to take pictures of this,”I complained.
Uncle laughed,“Start walking,Amy.I promise you'll be surprised.”After some time,I could see the outline of a forest in the distance.A little closer, there was a man waving to us.
“That's Kabir. The forest you see is his.He planted every single tree.”As we walked towards Kabir,Uncle explained that thirty years ago,the whole area was a wasteland. But one day Kabir decided to change all that and started planting trees. Thanks to him, part of the wasteland is now a paradise.
Uncle introduced me to Kabir, who had gray hair and a determined face.“Jita told me you like animals. Are you ready to see some?” he asked.“Of course!”I replied. We continued walking and soon were under the trees.I turned my head and was amazed at the difference between the two places, all because of the efforts of one man.
Like Uncle said,Kabir's forest was magical. We saw deer, rhinos, and even tigers.During lunchtime,Kabir explained how,by planting trees,it was possible to stop the land from eroding(侵蚀).

Passage 2

It was one of those sunny mornings when merely breathing seemed to be an event worth celebrating.I was in a particularly good mood as my mother had just given me RM400(马来西亚币)for my daily expenses during the week that she would be away with my father in China to visit her sick grandaunt.I was wondering if I survived on bread and butter the whole week,I would have RM300 to buy the latest computer games! It was certainly a great way to begin the day.
As I neared the classroom,I heard a loud noise coming from it and quickly rushed in.My classmates were gathered around Tommy's table as he searched through some personal items.Tommy had always been a popular boy in class. Not only was he bright and well mannered, but he also came from a wealthy family that provided him with all he could ask for.
My classmates told me that Tommy had lost the money that he had brought as a donation to the welfare home that we were supposed to visit that afternoon.Understanding the situation,I suggested that we organize a search around the classroom and inform the class teacher as soon as possible. In no time,Miss Soh rushed to the classroom. She decided to run a search through everyone's bag.We quickly stood by our tables and emptied the contents of our bags onto the table. When it came to my turn,I took out all my possessions. As Miss Soh took out the RM400 from my wallet, the class fell into a shock.
Up till then,I had no idea that the amount lost was exactly RM400.Everyone stared at me in horror.Miss Soh was pleased that her efforts had borne fruit. In a loud voice, she demanded to know where the money had come from.I told her the truth, but she appeared not to have heard anything that I had said. She claimed loudly that I was the thief, because my family was poor and could not possibly afford to give me RM400.

Passage 3

Today was Community Service Day at school.Maya's class was going to make cards for the seniors living in a nursing home.It was also the first day Maya would be wearing her leg brace(腿支架)to school, which was designed to help her walk more steadily and smoothly.
It was a cold autumn morning.Maya looked down, feeling embarrassed. To make it lovelier, she had delicately decorated the brace with pretty butterfly patterns.Still, she was unsure about others' reaction. All morning at school, kids kept glancing at her brace. To her relief, they didn't say anything.
In the classroom,Maya was drawing little green buds(芽)and pretty flowers when her friend Samir came over and sat by her.She felt his eyes fixed on her brace and heard him asking,“ What's that for?” Not knowing what to say,Maya pretended she didn't hear him. After a few seconds of awkwardness, she glanced back at him,and found that he looked a little sad.
After lunch, the class set off.The nursing home was on a small hill and all of them walked there happily along the path.Maya found that the brace did make it easier for her to walk up.
Maya and Samir were paired up with a lady who was 83 years old. There at the end of the hall in a wheelchair, with a big smile on her face, sat the lady, wearing a pink coat, with red lipstick and beautiful earrings. She looked bright and full of life.Moving flexibly and fast towards Maya and Samir, she greeted first.“I'm Joan,” she said cheerfully.“Glad to meet you.”
Maya and Samir handed her the cards they made.Joan looked at Samir's card carefully and spoke with admiration,“You've written a poem! That's so artistic!”Samir's face reddened with shyness. Then Joan turned to Maya's picture.“The first flowers of spring!”she cried in delight.“You really have a gift for using colour!”she said.Clearly,Joan's praise added great power into Maya.

Passage 4
I looked up from my desk to see the teacher writing on the board:“Battle of the Books!”She smiled and said,“This time it's a teamwork. You're going to be in teams of two,and set a reading goal.Every team that meets their goal by the end of the month will get a prize!”The lunch bell sounded before she could explain any more rules.
As I gathered my things,Liya passed my desk and said,“Teammates?” Since Liya and I shared the same interest in graphic novel(漫画小说),and we took Hindi language class together,we teamed up automatically.I was both relieved and excited to have my team. Then we got to the cafeteria and quickly threw out a bunch of ideas of what to do at our table.
I looked to our third friend Kash, with whom the three of us always do stuff together,“Kash,do you have ideas for us?”“Why would I give you guys ideas?” he said gloomily(阴沉地).“I'll save that for my team...whoever that is.Now I see how I rank in the friendship lineup.” Kash replied in an angry tone.
I knew he was mad for a reason. If I were him,not only would I think that I ranked last in that group, but I'd also be panicking about what team I could join. But now,I was on the inside and Kash wasn't.I felt like the only way to fix this would be three people on a team. So,as the teacher walked by our table,I asked for her permission. What surprised me was that she had intended to draw names to assign random groups, but didn't get a chance to say it before lunch.
Awkward and frustrated,we were stuck in this dilemma.Having first teamed up without Kash didn't mean we didn't like him.I knew we—especially I—wouldn't be able to enjoy any prize if our friend felt bad about being left out. So,I decided to do something to make it up for him and convince Kash he was an equal friend.

Emily White came to the world 17 years ago, with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive long. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In her hometown, a yearly outdoor performance was held in the school auditorium(礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town's people.
Many people tried out each year for it, but so many were turned away. It can only include the most excellent people in the field.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens- her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a glance at Amy's body and said, "Child, you are just not suitable. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too.”
Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Mr. Butler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn't want to be rejected again, so she hesitated about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Butler called, “Emily, you're next." Kind of nervous as she was, Emily did as Mr. Butler told her to. Mr. Butler sat by the piano to keep Emily company. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Butler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn't sleep that night. She tossed and turned in bed one thousand times. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn't fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain due to stress.

Bobby was getting cold sitting out in his backyard in the snow. Bobby didn’t wear boots; or rather, he didn’t own any. The thin sneakers he wore had a few holes in them and they did a poor job of keeping out the cold.
Bobby had been in his backyard for about an hour already. Try as he might, he could not come up with an idea for his mother’s Christmas gift. He shook his head as he thought, “This is useless. Even if I do come up with an idea, I don’t have any money for a gift.”
Wiping tears from his eyes, Bobby started walking down to the street where the shops were. It wasn’t easy being six without a father, especially when he needed a man to talk to.
Bobby walked from shop to shop, looking into each decorated window. Everything seemed so beautiful but so out of reach. It was starting to get dark and Bobby reluctantly turned to walk home when suddenly his eyes caught the glimmer (微光) of the setting sun’s rays reflecting on something on the roadside. He reached down and discovered a shiny dime (一角硬币).
Never before has anyone felt as wealthy as Bobby did at that moment. As he held his newly- found treasure, warmth spread throughout his entire body and he walked into the first store. His excitement quickly turned cold when salesperson after salesperson told him that he could not buy anything with only a dime.
He saw a flower shop and went inside to wait in line. When the shop owner asked if he could help him, Bobby presented the dime and asked if he could buy one flower for his mother’s Christmas gift. The shop owner looked at Bobby and his ten-cent offering. Then he put his hand on Bobby’s shoulder, saying, “You just wait here and I’ll see what I can do for you.”
The sound of the door closing as the last customer left pulled Bobby back to reality. All alone in the shop, Bobby began to feel alone and afraid.

I looked out at the smiling faces packed into the school hall. Flashes from cameras lit up in all directions. The applause filled my ears. I had done it. I had really done it.
Just a few months earlier, I would never have pictured myself acting in a play in front of two hundred people."Not for a million dollars," I would have said. But when the time came, I got up on stage and faced one of my greatest fears-and discovered I could do more than I ever gave myself credit for. I found a new person inside me, a much more daring, outgoing person who had been hidden all along, just waiting for the opportunity to appear.
If not for my teacher, Mrs Sather, I might never have found that opportunity.
In the first and second grade, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn't in my personality to be very outgoing, even when I knew someone well. I was afraid I would do or say something wrong, so usually I just smiled and listened to other people's conversations. I did well in school and I loved to write. However, I would escape into my writing, where I could be myself and never had to worry about what other people thought of me. In my stories, I was never shy.
My teacher, Mrs Sather, always encouraged me to write more. She told our class to go after our dreams and dig in with both hands. I think she was one of the first people to see my inner strength. One day, she announced that our class was going to perform a play she had written." I'll begin to cast everyone tomorrow," she said." I need someone who is not afraid to be on stage in front of a lot of people to play the lead part of Dorothy. Anybody want to try " A few excited hands shot up-mine, of course, was not one of them-and Mrs Sather smiled." We'll talk more about it tomorrow," she said. Then the bell rang and my classmates slowly left the classroom.

A tradesman was leading a caravan (商队) to another country to sell his goods. Along the way they came to the edge of a hot-sand desert. They learnt that during the daytime the sun heated up the fine sand until it was as hot as charcoal (木炭), so no one could walk on it — not even camels! Then the caravan leader hired a desert guide, one who could follow the stars, so they could travel only at night when the sand cooled down. The guide sat on the first cart. And they began the dangerous night-time journey across the desert. A couple of nights later, after eating their evening meal and waiting for the sand to cool, they started out again.
Later that night, the desert guide, who was driving the first cart, saw from the stars that they were getting close to the other side of the desert. He had been very tired, so when he relaxed, he fell asleep. Then the camels who, of course, couldn’t tell directions by reading the stars, gradually turned to the side and went in a big wide circle until they ended up at the same place that they started from! By then it was morning, and the people woke up and realized they were back at the same spot where they started. They lost heart and began to cry about their condition. Since the desert crossing was supposed to be over by now, they had no more water, and they were worried about there was nothing to drink, and were extremely afraid they would die of thirst. They even began to blame the caravan leader and the desert guide. However, the leader himself didn’t lose courage. He talked with the desert guide and then they began wandering, trying to work out a plan.

Old Man Donovan was a mean man who hated children. He threw rocks at them and even shot at them with a shotgun. At least that’s what we had heard.
His small farm bordered our neighborhood where my younger sister, Leigh Ann, and I lived when we were growing up. His farm was long, narrow, and quaint. It held two treasures. One was his beautiful fruit.
There were many varieties of fruit: pears, apples, and lots more I just can't think of. The fruit naturally drew the children to his land. It made them into thieves. But my sister and I didn't dare to take his fruit because of the horrible rumors we had heard about Old Man Donovan.
One summer day, we were playing in a nearby field. It was time to head back home. My sister and I were feeling very daring that day. There was a short cut to our house that went through the Donovan farm. We thought he wouldn't be able to see us run across his property around the luscious fruit trees. We were almost through the farm when we heard, "Hey, girl!" in a gruff, low voice. We stopped dead in our tracks! There we were, face to face with Old Man Donovan. Our knees were shaking. We had visions of rocks pounding our bodies and bullets piercing our hearts.
"Come here," he said, reaching up to one of his apple trees. Still shaking, we went over to him. He held out several ripe, juicy, red apples. "Take these home,” he commanded. We took the apples with surprised hearts and ran all the way home. Of course, Leigh Ann and I ate the apples.
As time went on, we often went through Old Man Donovan's farm, and he kept on giving us more luscious fruit. One day, we stopped by to see him when he was on his front porch. We talked to him for hours. While he was talking, we realized that we had found the other hidden treasure: the sweet, kind heart hidden behind his gruff voice. Soon, he was one of our favorite people to talk to. Unfortunately, his family never seemed to enjoy our company. They never smiled or welcomed us in.

Once rainy spring day, Mom became a single mother. My little brother was two, my sister was eight, and I was fourteen. Those first weeks were especially hard before our small monthly support payments began. Mom found work in a potato-chip factory, but didn’t get paid right away.
That first Saturday morning as she left for work, Mom said, “I didn’t get ‘I don’t know what you’ll cook for supper.’ I won’t get paid until Monday, but I’m out of money, and our shelves are bare.” She laughed, but tears filled her eyes.
“Don’t that fairy tale have a happy ending No, but we’ll do better,” I said. “I’ll ask Jesus to get us food today.” My words sounded brave even to myself. She shook her head and went to work.
I had planted a garden in our backyard. The lettuce (莴苣) and peas were up, but nothing was ready to eat. I looked through the kitchen and discovered Mom was right. We only had cereal (麦片) for our breakfast.
While my sister and brother played, I prayed and tidied the house. I was washing our front-room window when a cheery man in a blue shirt came over and rang the doorbell. Although I'd never seen him before, his big smile made me trust him.
When I opened the door, he asked “Have you heard about the new grocery store a mile from here Today is its grand opening.”
I nodded. I’d seen their signs as I rode past on the school bus.
“They’re giving away gift coupons (礼券) to celebrate.” He pulled three white cards from his shirt pocket and handed them to me. “The first is for a huge loaf of bread, the second is for a gallon of milk, and the third lets you choose a half-gallon of your favorite flavor of ice cream.”

There, at the top of the list was posted her name. The leading singer! However, whispers around her pulled her back to earth. Just then, she felt a pat on the shoulder. It was Mr. Butler. “We selected you for our faith in your abilities and voice.” Inspired, Emily practiced even harder for the day of performance.
Finally the day for the performance came. Emily’s eyes danced with excitement as she stepped on to the stage. Standing still, she heard noises among the crowd. Obviously not cheers! Emily felt nervous again and even her legs began trembling. At that moment, her eyes parked on Mr. Butler at the corner. He nodded and exchanged a determined glance with her, which timely put her heart back in place. With the music rising, Emily began her singing. Her sweet voice poured and the audience fell into an abrupt silence. When she finished, the auditorium erupted into a sea of cheers. Eventually the shop owner came out and moved to the counter. There, before Bobby's eyes, lay twelve red roses, with leaves of green and tiny white flowers all tied together with a big silver tape. Bobby's heart sank as the owner placed them gently into a long white box. "That will be ten cents, young man." the shop owner said, reaching out his hand for the dime. Slowly, Bobby moved his hand to give the man his dime. Could this be true He wondered.
Paragraph2:
With the bunch of beautiful roses in his hands, Bobby backed off and then turned and ran. Within minutes, he was at home, still breathless. “Look, Mother, what have I got for you ” Bobby called out in the backyard. Mother came out from inside the house. She could hardly believe her eyes upon seeing the beautiful flowers in front of her. “Merry Christmas!” Bobby said and began to tell her everything he had experienced in the flower shop. It was from his family that we knew that he had fell from a tree while looking after the fruits and his head was seriously hurt and needed a dangerous operation.
Paragraph 2
The next winter, word got around that Old Man Donovan had died. Hearing the bad news, I felt a lump in my throat and tears welled up in my eyes. I realized gone were the days when we sat together chatting with each other. I realized gone were the days when we were lucky enough to have a taste of the luscious fruit grown by him. However, he left us a hidden treasure—his kind heart, which shall never die away with the passage of time.
8.Paragraph 1:
I stared. “Really There’s no purchase required ” “None at all. These are free. Go and see.” I thanked him and went to the store with my brother and sister, where colorful balloons still announced the grand opening. We walked inside and showed our cards to the nearest clerk. “It says these are gift cards,” she said “These items are absolutely free.” We could hardly believe it. We thanked God for caring and picked up the goods and left the store with broad smiles.
Paragraph 2:
When Mom returned, we had food on the table. “Where did you get this ” Mom asked. “I prayed,” I said. And then I showed her the ice cream in the fridge. She had her eyes wide open. “Where did all this come from ” she asked. I told her about the man who gave me the cards and the new grocery store as we had our meal. She shook her head again, this time with a sense of wonder. I could see tears of relief welled up her eyes.
