1.(22-23高二下·浙江宁波·期中)阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
It was a bright May afternoon along the Maryland coast, and Jonathan Bauer, 51, an expert doctor at a hospital, and his 13-year-old daughter, Ava were were driving with the windows down as they headed home on the 1.4-mile-long, two-lane Route 90 bridge, which stretches across the shallow waters of Assa-woman Bay. Suddenly, the calm was disturbed by the squeal of tires.
Not far ahead of them, a black pickup truck was sliding from one lane to the other. To the Bauers’ horror, it ran into a concrete barrier, turned over the SUV directly ahead of them, and came to rest hanging over the railing (栏杆) of the bridge. Bauer hit the brakes in time to avoid the vehicles in his path.
“Ava, are you OK ” he asked after stopping the car. She was shaken, but otherwise unhurt. And then a scream. It came from the pickup, which had come to rest on its right side. The back passenger compartment (车厢) and truck bed hung out past the guardrail, 30 or more feet above the waters of the bay. The driver’s door threw open and a man climbed out. He dropped to the ground, and then ran to the railing. Bauer ran up beside him. The man pointed down, saying something in Spanish. In the water was a car seat. Bobbing (颠簸) next to it was a girl, about two years old, pink dotted dress, brown hair, brown eyes, terrified, floating on her back, kicking and splashing and screaming.
From around the truck, more screaming came from its other passengers who had gotten off the truck and were looking down into the water.
The situation quickly went from bad to frightening when the baby girl rolled over onto her stomach. Bauer waited for the pickup driver to do something, but he didn’t move. Maybe he was in shock. “Ava!” Bauer shouted, bending to remove his shoes. “Stay by the car!”

【答案】Paragraph 1:
He climbed onto the railing and jumped into the water without hesitation. Seeing the little girl floating on her chest ten feet away, Bauer swam to her with all his strength and lifted her out of the water swiftly. However, the toddler’s critical condition had Bauer’s heart in his mouth, heartbeat racing wildly. In no time he collected himself as a professional to offer timely assistance standing straight, lying her against his shoulder and hitting hard at her back with the flat of his hand. With another hit on the back and retches followed by a breath, Bauer sensed the beautiful feeling of little fingers holding him around the neck.
Paragraph 2:
Her eyes opened now, focused on him, and he could hear ambulance coming this way. Minutes later, much to everyone’s relief, the girl was rushed to hospital in an ambulance, and Bauer breathed a sigh of relaxation ultimately and hugged his own daughter on the bridge, with his eyes glittering in the sun. Soon they were informed gratefully the toddler suffered a broken shoulder but was otherwise uninjured. Hearing the inspiring news, Ava was on nine cloud with thrill and felt proud of her father, without whose immediate leap, that little girl would not live a whole life. Added to the excitement and inspired by his actions, she made up her mind to save lives when she grew up.

The sound of glass breaking was immediately recognizable. I had been telling my best friend a silly story and had spun around in the living room when I heard that sound and froze.
When I looked down at the rug(地毯), it was covered with tiny shards(碎片) of sparking red, pink and clear glass. Missi said, “Oh, no, not the vase.”
“Why What did I do ” My face reddened.
“Abby, that glass vase was one of the few items my relatives brought when they came to America,” Missi replied nervously. “If you’d broken anything else in the department, I would have gladly said I did it. But you’re going to have to tell my mom that it was your fault, and she’s going to be really mad.”
I was terrified. I’d destroyed a priceless family heirloom (传家宝). Why did I have to spin around like that
We gathered up the broken pieces. I kept saying that maybe it could be fixed, but Missi said it didn’t look possible. I insisted we keep the pieces. The glass was so delicate, like a colorful light bulb had exploded. Some of it broke even more as we tried to sweep it up carefully.
Missi said her mom would be home by six. My stomach was in knots. Would her mom yell at me or punish me Would she tell me that I couldn’t stay in their department for the weekend Although it was hot then, I was in a cold sweat and couldn’t stop playing the scene over in my mind. The only thing I could think of to say was “I’m sorry”.
A couple of minutes after six, we heard a key turn in the door. Missi’s mom was home.
Right from the start, we could see she was in a good mood.

【答案】范文
Right from the start, we could see she was in a good mood. And she offered to take us out for a cold drink. Before that, I gathered my courage to say, “Aunt, I have something to tell you. I came with Missi, and we were talking and laughing. I spun around and didn’t look beforehand. The glass vase behind the couch fell. It broke into pieces. I am sorry.” I could feel my voice trembling.
“Oh, thank you! I always hated that ugly vase! You’ve done me a huge favor.” Missi’s mom screamed with delight. I couldn’t believe my ears. This was not at all the reaction I had expected. Feeling shocked for a while, I couldn’t stop the tears running down my face. I suddenly realized how considerate Missi’s mom was. She probably was not happy because I had broken the vase. But she saw my uneasiness and tried to make me feel at ease. She taught me a lesson about consideration which I would always remember.

83-year-old Agatha Stones was a woman who had given birth to four kids. When these kids grew up, they all moved away from home to start their own lives.
All of Agatha’s kids had become mostly interested in material things but ignored the importance of family. “Business has been a lot, mom,” the eldest, Brian, would say. Sally, John and Mary were in their late 30s and had yet to settle down. It hurt Agatha that none of her four kids remembered to visit her or even call her.
One day, she was complaining about it to her friend Sharon. “I just don’t understand why these kids don’t want to return home to spend time with me,” she said.
“Is that what is eating you ” her friend asked.
“Yes, it is,” Agatha said. “My lawyer has asked me to write my will (遗嘱). I have no idea how I’ll share the little I have among all four of my kids.”
“I know what you can do to determine that,” Sharon proudly said. And then, she offered Agatha a shocking plan.
A couple of days later, a piece of news came: Agatha suddenly fell ill and was hospitalized. Despite that, none of her four kids visited her. A few more days later, all four children received a message stating that their mom had passed away. Within hours, they all arrived home to discuss how they would share the inheritance (遗产).
Suddenly, a voice cut through the discussion. “Will you guys give all that a rest and focus on what has brought us all together The death of our mother!” the youngest daughter, Mary, shouted. There was a brief pause at her outburst, but as soon as the silence was broken by a phone buzzing, they went on.
Unknown to them, Sharon was listening in on their conversation and, after a few minutes, she walked into the room, and told them to enter another room to say their final goodbyes to their mother.

【答案】 When entering the room, Brian was terribly shocked. After Brian, the same situation was repeated with Sally, and then with John, who came out weeping. When Mary walked into the room and saw her mom, she screamed in happiness and ran into her mom’s arms. “I thought we had lost you,” she sobbed. It showed Agatha that Mary was the only one that had enough sadness about her death. “If I had to determine the person who would receive all my properties, it would be Mary,” Agatha told them later.
“But I believe in you all, so I hope that this has taught you a lesson,” she continued. Everyone stood there with a bright red face. That day became a big day to them. From then on, they all started to call and visit their mom more often. When the holidays came, they celebrated together as a big and harmonious family, because they started to realize home is where the heart is. Years later, Agatha died, and her wealth was divided up equally among all the four children.

“Why do you want to be a teacher ” I never explain it without the usual obvious reasons, such as my love of children or wanting to make a difference. It was not until I met Kathy that I truly knew the reason I wanted to be a teacher.
I was running a summer program. A seventh grader, a young girl walked through the door and I thought to myself, “This is going to be a long summer.” She was a student at my school, and I was well aware of who she was even though I was an eighth teacher. Her reserved place in the principal office was well known by the eight teachers as we prepared our sales for those students who were going to need extra attention.
I racked my brain (绞尽脑汁) trying to figure out what I was going to do with her. I usually had my older students act as classroom helpers for the younger grades, so I decided that this would be a good spot for her. Little did I know how that one little decision would change my life.
Kathy transformed before my eyes. She showed love and patience with the children in that classroom. She was responsible and caring and she began referring to those students as “her kids”. I witnessed a natural teacher blooming. I had an unforgettable summer with Kathy.
Soon the school year began and Kathy and I were together again. This time I was her teacher. Kathy
continued to volunteer with “her kids” at my after-school program. Her smile was infectious and her sense of humor amazing. Before graduation, Kathy thanked every person there for believing in her and giving her a chance. She was truly grateful. There was not a dry eye on the scene.
We continued to keep in touch when Kathy went to high school and then university. Once she sent a letter to me, thanking me again, for giving her a chance and believing in her. She also stated that she had made her final decision and she was going to be a teacher! I don’t know I could have felt more pride than I did at that moment.

【答案】One possible version
Several years later, I came across Kathy while shopping one afternoon. You can imagine her excitement about our encounter. On seeing me, she cried with delight as she always did and gave me a huge smile and bear hug. And my happiness was no less than hers. Later, we shared a dinner. Over the dinner, she caught me up on everything that happened to her. She was a school teacher like me in a local school, getting along well with her kids. We chatted on and on, enjoying a wonderful evening.
Now when I think about why I became a teacher I think of Kathy. She truly loved life and I felt so special to be once a part of her life. I have a picture we took together hanging in my classroom as a daily reminder of why I am there. Whenever there are students testing my patience, I think of Kathy and remember what a difference she made in my life. I wish every teacher a Kathy; I am truly honored and blessed to have her in my life.(158 words)

Fourteen Steps
They say a cat has nine lives, and I think that possible since I am now living my third life and I’m not even a cat.
My first life began on a clear, cold day in November, 1904, when I arrived as the sixth of eight children of a poor farming family. Though struggling to make a living, I started my own family. This was when I started to enjoy my first life, happy, in excellent health and I became two lovely girls.
Life was a pleasant dream.
Then the dream ended and became one of those horrible nightmares that cause you to wake in a cold sweat in the middle of the night. I began to suffer from a rare disease of nerves, affecting first my right arm and leg, and then my other side.
Thus began my second life...
Despite my disease, I still drove to and from work each day. And I managed to keep healthy and optimistic, to a degree, because of 14 steps.
Crazy Not at all.
Our home has 14 steps leading up from the garage to the kitchen door. Here hobbled (跛行) a desperate cripple (瘸子), a man who held on because of 14 miserable steps leading up to the backdoor from his garage.
Then on a dark night, I began my third life. It was raining when I started from home that night and drove on one of the less-traveled roads. Suddenly one of the tires burst with a bang. I fought the car to a stop.
Then I remembered that a short distance up a little side road was a house. I drove slowly along until I came to the house. Lighted windows welcomed me as I pulled into the driveway.
The door opened and a little girl stood there. I told her that I had a flat tire and needed someone to change it for me because I had a crutch (拐杖) and couldn’t do it myself. She went into the house and a moment later came out, followed by a man who called a cheerful greeting.
I sat there comfortable and dry. The rain seemed to be easing a bit now, and I rolled down the window to watch.

【答案】One possible version:
There followed a long interval of noises, but finally it was done. I heard the slam of the truck lid, and then
they were standing at my car window. He was an old man, stooped and frail-looking under his slicker. The little girl was about eight or ten, I judged, with a merry face and a wide smile as she looked up at me. He said, “This a bad night for car trouble, but you’re all set now.” “Thanks,” I said. “How much do I owe you ” He shook his head. “Nothing. Cynthia told me you were a cripple — on a crutch. Glad to be of help. I know you’d do the same for me. There’s no charge, friend.” I held out a five-dollar bill. “No. I like to pay my way.”
He didn’t take the bill and the little girl stepped closer and said quietly, “Grandpa can’t see it.” In the next few frozen seconds, the shame and horror of that moment penetrated and I was sick with an intensity I had never felt before. A blind man and a child, fumbling, feeling with cold, wet fingers for bolts and tools in the dark. I don’t remember how long I sat there after they said good night and left me, but it was long enough for me to search deep within myself and realize that I was filled to over-flowing with self-pity, selfishness, indifference to the needs of others and thoughtlessness. I am trying now not only to climb 14 steps each day, but in my small way to help others.

I will never forget what happened when I was at the age of 10. It was one week before Children’s Day. I was looking forward to my gifts. Given the fact that I was the youngest in my family, the other members would like to give me a different gift. Whatever the gift was, I was always more than glad to accept them. Undoubtedly, I was being taken care of. Naturally, it was feeling so good.
In most cases, my uncles would ask me smilingly what I desired before Children’s Day and that year I was eagerly waiting to be asked. What a beautiful spaceship it was! That flashed across my eyes when I opened a big gift box. However, it greeted me against my expectation that year.
It was exactly one week before Children’s Day. Just one week, she could hardly wait. My dear mother told my father she, my future-to-be little sister, would come to the world. Immediately, we went to the hospital. After an hour, they told me that I had the little sister. I didn’t want her but I wanted a spaceship. The days that followed went so fast. No one was taking care of me. Everyone was talking about her. My life would go off the beaten track. I had no intention of being a big brother. But it just happened in an instant.
On the day before Children’s Day, everyone in my home was paying closer and closer attention to my
newborn sister. My family was becoming hers. Even my uncles asked me nothing about the gift again. She stole everything I’d ever had. My life and presents were completely spoiled. On thinking of this, I couldn’t help crying in the middle night sleep. Suddenly, I had a nightmare and was startled (吓一跳) awake. Shadows being all around me, I was defenseless and helpless. I rushed into my parents’ bedroom but they were sleeping so soundly that I couldn’t wake them up. They were just stressed out and worn out. Standing near their bed, I tried not to cry when I saw her. She was wide awake, looking at me with her big eyes twinkling in her small bed.

【答案】One possible version
All of a sudden, a slim shadow danced in the bedroom, startling her. In that split second, the slimly dancing shadow startled me. It took me what seemed a century to realize a tree waving in the violent wind was reflected on the window. Meanwhile, she began to cry, her mouth wide opening, arms waving and legs kicking. Obviously, she panicked too. Startled as I was, I tiptoed closer to her little bed, held out my hand to stroke hers, patted her on the back with the other. She stopped crying knowingly and grinned from ear to ear with her eyes twinkling again. I breathed a sigh of relief.
Having comforted her, I felt some change slowly happened to me. My loneliness was disappearing out of nowhere now. Instead, a sense of responsibility as an elder brother was overwhelming me. Not only did her arrival take over the center of the whole family initially but also she started to become the center of my attention too. Her cute round face and sparkling eyes arrested my love for her. I looked around and found parents awake and smiling at me warmly. It was just at that moment that a shadow of a happy family dancing in the gentle wind was reflected on the window. It was just at that moment that I knew from the bottom of my heart that my little sister was the
best gift I’d ever got.

Neil had never raised my rent, which was $750 a month, very cheap for New York City. This was a big comfort when I was laid off from my newspaper job and couldn’t find any work for two years. He promised me that I would always have a home, even if I had a hard time paying the rent. But now, I was going to have to find a new apartment and pay more.
Although he gave me six months to find a new place, I was still astonished and worried. So I called Jon, my
best friend, to complain about my bad experience. But Jon surprised and annoyed me.
“Look on the bright side.” he said. “Maybe you will find a place you like better. Do you remember you complained all the time about the crowded bus to and from the house Why don’t you find a place where you don’t have to take that bus ”
“How can you say that ” I shouted at him. “This is way out of my comfort zone!”
“Come on, Lisa. Did it ever occur to you that change could be good ” Jon said.
“No!” I screamed and hung up on him.
I felt upset for the next few days about our argument. But what if Jon was right Why did I assume that every change would be bad Maybe my life needed to be shaken up.
That summer, as I started looking for apartments, I began to think about new possibilities. Maybe I could find an apartment with better furniture.

【答案】One possible version:
Finally, that October, I spotted the apartment of my dreams in a new home in a nice neighborhood. The place had a stainless-steel refrigerator and a microwave oven. It also had central air-conditioning. What’s more, the new place was close to the train and the express bus. Thus, although the apartment was a little expensive, I decided to move in. It took me a few weeks to get the place fully in order, but I remember how proud and happy I was to show my new house to my friend, Jon, one Saturday night when he came over for dinner.
As time went on, I found myself doing more things out of my comfort zone and feeling more positive about life. I started to address being overweight. I ran regularly, which helped me lose eighty pounds. I also started to get out
of my comfort zone professionally. As change upon change built up in my life, I felt like I was a different person. My life had improved in so many ways, and it all started when I moved out of my old apartment, took a risk and found a new place to spread my wings.

Two Tickets to the Big Game
Two tickets. Only two tickets to the big quarterfinals basketball game.
Three pairs of eyes all focused on the tickets in Dad’s outstretched hand. Marcus, the oldest, spoke the
question running through everyone’s mind, “Only two tickets But, Dad, which of us gets to go with you ”
“Yeah, Daddy, who gets to go ” repeated Caleb, the youngest.
“Dad, can’t you get any more tickets ” I asked. I might be the in-between sister, but I was just as eager as my basketball-crazy brothers were for a night out with Dad.
“I’m afraid not,” Dad answered. “Mr. Williams only has two season tickets. He was thoughtful enough to offer the tickets to Saturday’s game to me when he found out he’d be out of town this weekend.”
Dad scratched his head. “I guess I’ll have to figure out a fair way of choosing between the three of you by tomorrow morning. I’ll have to decide who deserves it most. Let me sleep on it—okay, guys and girls ” he added quickly before I could correct him.
The next morning, we hurried into the kitchen, only to find a note next to our breakfast, which read, “Mom and I go to pick up some books from the library. All of you get started on the Saturday chores as soon as you finish breakfast.”
“Chores! He’s got to be kidding.” Marcus said as he set down his glass of milk with a thud(砰的一声). “How can we concentrate on chores when the big game is a mere eleven hours away ”
“Wait for me!” Caleb added, slurping the last of his milk and dashing after his brother.
A few minutes later, as I was washing off the kitchen countertops, I heard the familiar “thump…thump…thump” of the basketball bouncing off of the driveway. Frustrated, I knocked on the window three times. When the boys looked up, I meaningfully held up a kitchen sponge and dishtowel. Marcus casually nodded to me and held up five fingers. Sure, five more minutes! I shook my head from side to side as I began to replace the lid(盖子) on the garbage container.

【答案】One possible version:
Suddenly a white envelope on the inside of the lid caught my attention. It must have stuck to the lid by accident. But then I noticed that the envelope was actually taped to the inside of the lid, and someone had written the word “Congratulations!” on the front of the envelope, too. I lifted the flap on the envelope and pulled out a folded piece of paper, “To the one who deserves to go,” the paper read, and inside of it was a ticket to the basketball game! I can’t believe it!—I’m the one that gets to go!
That evening turned out to be as special as I’d imagined. Two seats at center court, and a dad and his daughter cheering their team to victory. The game was so competitive and I was so much engaged in the game that I had no time to feel sorry for my two brothers. But I knew that it would be a long-remembered lesson in responsibility from a dad who let his kids make their own choices and earn their own rewards.

Public places have been difficult for my family since Myles was diagnosed with autism(自闭症) at two. He had quickly turned into a silent child frozen in a world completely inaccessible to us. One time, I got up the courage to take Myles out to Golden Corral without my husband. Lots of people and noise caused overload for him. First came the screaming, and then more noises. With my nerves stretched thin, I noticed a sweet old lady coming my way.
“Can you keep him quiet ” she snapped. “I’m trying to eat!”
I held my tongue out of respect for my elders. I apologized and left with as much dignity as I could. I had to escape the weight of the eyes around. After that, I built a wall around my heart to protect my heart from other people’s opinions about my family. I still had the great privilege of raising this very special child. It didn’t matter what anyone thought, but I had lost something. I stopped looking for the opportunity to help them understand. I assumed the worst about them.
So when I was back at Golden Corral with my son, who started shouting and hitting the table again, I looked up at the middle-aged woman approaching. Her face was calm as she assessed the situation. If she complained about my son’s behavior, I was prepared to fight back.
“I hope you don’t mind me asking,” she said. “But does your son have autism ”
“Yeah,” I replied to the lady, who was waiting patiently.
“Well, I raised a child with autism. My name is Pam,” she said. “If you ever need any help, please call me. I have connection with a lot of people like you and me.” I looked at the hands she extended, holding a slip of paper with her name and number on it.
“Thank you,” I managed to whisper.
“Call me,” she said, smiling at me, and saving a special, knowing smile for Myles before walking away.

【答案】 Later I called her, and she became as close as family. The moment we met at her home, she greeted me with a sweet smile on her face. I was struck by her patience when dealing with Myles and her kid, who was also suffering from autism. Together we sat in the kitchen, sometimes out in the open, talking and laughing happily. On sunny days, the four of us would hike or go camping in the open. Meanwhile, the two kids seemed to enjoy the company of each other, and things began to improve for them.
Of course, there are moments when we simply felt hopeless. Usually at this time, we would hug each other, saying encouraging words to each other. Pam managed to contact some doctors and experts on autism, and we shared experiences and our vision of the future, believing that things would be all right as long as we stayed positive. Luckily, with our common efforts, the two kids are improving significantly. And I begin to look forward to each day filled with hope.

I love digging in the back garden. Sometimes, I’d dig for pottery and stuff, but I’ve always wanted to find a fossil (化石). I like finding out about the past. At school, my favourite subject is history. I’ve been watching Andy’s Prehistoric Adventures since I was three. I knew I had a good chance of finding a fossil, because my house was built on a muddy, limestone substrate (石灰岩基质), in Walsall, which means millions of years ago, my garden wasn’t my garden at all—it was a coral reef (珊瑚礁).
On 22 March, it was a sunny day. I came back from school. I asked Dad if I could dig in my favourite spot by the yellow bush near our house, where we had planted potatoes and onions, but he told me not to, because he’d just moved a tree there and it was establishing roots. I went to the back garden instead, taking Dad’s old brown wooden garden tools. I dug a big hole, about a foot deep, which didn’t take very long, where I found a ball of mud with something pointy sticking out the top. I ran into the kitchen screaming. I was so excited. I knew it was a fossil.
At first, I thought it might be a deer’s tooth or a goat’s claw. When Dad washed the mud off, we saw that it had lots of bumpy, wavy lines; we both thought it looked like one of the sea anemones, from the fish tank in his office, but with a horn(触角). Dad sent a video to the Fossil Finds UK Facebook group. A man calling himself an archaeologist (考古学家) replied saying it had the markings of a horn coral from the Palaeozoic era, which is the very beginnings of life on Earth. I had found one of the oldest fossils in England.
We looked in my books and online for more information. We typed our postcode into a British Geology Survey search where you can find out what you’re standing on—ours is the oldest substrate in the area, with lots of clay and limestone, but it’s unusual to find anything so close to the surface. Experts told us that my horn coral lived between 415 million and 480 million years ago. There weren’t even proper fish or sharks then.

Before the horn coral, the only fossils I was familiar with were shark teeth that Dad got me.

【答案】One possible version:
Before the horn coral, the only fossils I was familiar with were shark teeth that Dad got me. Since our find, Dad and I have been doing more digging in the garden. We have moved out of the flowerbeds and on to the lawn. We’ve found stone blocks with hundreds of tiny traces from coral. We’ve got 11 pieces in total, but the horn coral is our biggest. The more fossils I got, the more obsessed I became with them.
When I grow up, I want to be an archaeologist. In this case, I will be able to study rocks and find out where they came from. I will make a display case for my finds and, one day, I hope to turn my fossils into a mini museum and make it free for people to visit. In addition, I want to spread stories of each fossil across the world.

“How can I buy a present without any money ” he thought.
Jim picked up the newspaper that was lying on the couch. He noticed a large advertisement on the front page. The local department store was sponsoring a contest. “Tell us why your mom is special and win a shopping spree (狂欢购物) for her,” said the ad.
“This is perfect!” thought Jim. He ran to his room with the newspaper. Taking a pencil and a blank piece of paper from his desk, he started to write.
“My mom is the best mother in the world. She always makes a lunch for me to take to school and she never forgets my dessert. She reads as many books to me before bed as I want. She always remembers to check under the bed for monster. And she gives the best hugs, but never in front of my friends, who would laugh at me for hugging my mom.”
Jim liked what he had written. He copied it neatly and got an envelope and a stamp from his dad. He ran to the mailbox with his entry. “Mom will love having a shopping spree, ” he thought.
Jim checked the mailbox every day for his prize. Days passed by, and then weeks.
Soon it was the day before Mother’s Day. Jim still had not heard anything about the contest. With time going by, the mixed feeling of disappointment and anxiety was growing in his heart.

“What am I going to do now ” he wondered. Suddenly he had an idea. He fumbled in his drawers and fortunately found a piece of delicate and fragrant paper. He sat down straight on his chair, and began to write a letter in his best handwriting as a Mother’s Day present. “Dear mom, I’m writing this to tell you that you are the best mother in the world...” With a sincere heart, Jim finished the letter and sealed it in an envelope, his lips curving into a smile.
Paragraph 2:
The next morning Jim handed his present to his mom. Finishing reading the letter, his mom swept him into her arms with her eyes wet as if she wanted to squeeze the breath out of him. “Thank you, my dear!” She sniffed, hugging Jim more tightly. After hearing the reason, his mom gently combed her fingers through his hair, saying, “To me, your letter is better than a thousand shopping sprees.” Hugging each other, they felt blissful as if they were in possession of everything. Indeed, love should be made known to loved ones.

It started out as a normal spring morning. Fern was busy setting the table for breakfast when her father had been to the hoghouse(猪圈)with an ax. Fern, who was only eight, just wondered why he needed an ax. Curiosity drove her to ask her mom.
“Well,” replied Mrs Arable, “some pigs were born last night but one of the pigs is a weakling(虚弱的猪). It is very small and weak, and it will never amount to anything. So your father has decided to do away with it.”
Fern trembled with anger, unable to believe what she had heard. Noticing Fern’s reaction, Mrs Arable continued to explain, “Your father is right. The pig would probably die anyway.”
Fern pushed a chair out of the way and stormed outdoors. The grass was wet and the earth smelled of springtime. Fern’s sneakers were sopping(浸湿)by the time she caught up with her father. Desperately, she begged her father not to kill the pig, sobbing it was unfair. “Fern,” Mr Arable turned to his little girl and said gently, “you will have to learn to control yourself.”
“Control myself ” yelled Fern. “This is a matter of life and death, and you talk about controlling myself.”
With tears streaming down her cheeks, she reached out for the ax and tried to pull it out of her father’s hand.
However, Mr Arable took no notice of her words, thinking it was another mischief (胡闹)and went on with what he had been doing. Anxious but determined, Fern cried out, “The pig couldn’t help being born small, could it If I had been very small at birth, would you have killed me "
Saying a firm “No” as an answer, Mr Arable smiled in great amazement and looked down at his daughter with love. “This is different. A little girl is one thing, a weak pig is another.” It seemed he didn’t intend to change his mind. Fern would not give in either, still hanging on to the ax. “This is the most terrible case of injustice I’ve ever heard of!”

Paragraph1:
A complicated look came over Mr Arable’ sface. This was the first time that he had been questioned about the decision on a pig’s life. Meeting the determined red eyes of his beloved daughter, Mr. Arable felt himself being left in a dilemma, not knowing what was the right thing to do. “Dad, please, please...” Fern kept begging. Looking at her miserable face, Mr Arable was lost in deep thought. After what seemed like a century, he gave in to his beloved daughter, saying “All right! He’s yours!”
Paragraph 2:
Fern loved the little pig more than anything. Fern named the pig “Lucky”, considering herself lucky to have the pig for company. She loved to pet him, to warm his milk, and to put him to bed. Meanwhile, Lucky loved his milk and he was never happier than when Fern was warming up a bottle for him. He would stand up and gaze up at her with adoring eyes. Scooping Lucky up against her cheek, Fern smiled lovingly, “With love, you’ll never be a walking anymore!”
范文二
Paragraph 1:
A complicated look came over Mr Arable’sface. The words his daughter just said still echoing in his head, never did he know the weakling meant so much to her. He lowered his head with an unprecedented wave of hesitation only to catch sight of her daughter’s determined eyes and firm grip. Reflecting that killing the small pig may hurt her daughter deeply, he was stuck in a dilemma. After seemingly a long time, there came a sigh of Mr Arable, “All right! He’s yours!”
Paragraph 2:
Fern loved the little pig more than anything. The following days witnessed Fern fed the pig devotedly and inexhaustibly. When the sky barely dawned, she warmed his milk, tied his bib on, and held the bottle for him with love, then at noontime, and again at suppertime. Simultaneously, the pig would grunt, leap forward to sniff Fern and gaze up at her with adoring eyes. Seeing her baby gaining pounds as days went by, she felt a great sense of achievement and understood taking good care of a life did make a difference in this normal yet meaningful spring!

It was a cold winter Monday morning. Manu, an eight-year-old, was sleeping comfortably in his bedroom upstairs. Mondays are usually very difficult for him after a weekend break from his school.
“Manu, wake up!” shouted Manu’s mother, Akhila. Manu pulled the blanket over himself and pretended to ignore his mother’s repeated attempts to wake him up.
“Manu! Please wake up! It’s already 6 o’clock and your school bus will be here by 7 o’clock.” Manu continued sleeping. Finally, Akhila walked up to the bedroom. “Manu, wake up! It’s time you at least learned to wake up on time and do your morning chores without so much effort from my side.” said his mother.

“I’m sorry, Lisa, but Debbie and I are going to move back into the house. You’re going to have to find another place to live.”
I couldn’t believe what Neil, my landlord (房东), was telling me on that warm April night. I had tears in my eyes, and so did he. I had lived in his Staten Island house for more than twelve years.

Finally, Manu got out of bed and started getting ready for school lazily. The school bus was already honking(按喇叭) in front of his house while Manu was brushing his teeth. Akhila requested the driver to wait for a few minutes. She quickly helped Manu get ready and helped him get to the school bus.

Manu was back from school at 4 o’clock. Akhila asked him to finish his homework first. Manu, as usual, ignored his mother and continued playing with his pet dog. Finally, with a lot of effort, the mother helped him complete his homework. Manu had his maths test the next day.
The next day, everything was usually expected and there was no effort from Akhila to wake up her son. The time was seven and Akhila had still made no effort to wake up Manu. The school bus honked and Akhila, unlike her usual self, asked the bus driver to leave.

I was born in London, England, and lived there with my mother until I was about eight years old. To find a better life, she went to Chicago and left me with friends in London until she got settled enough to send for me.
Meanwhile, back in England, I was getting into trouble. I had always felt like an outsider, different from the other kids. They didn’t want to play with me. That made me mad, so I got into fights and ended up getting expelled (开除) for being a danger to the other kids at my school. The people I was staying with were upset with me and felt they couldn’t manage me. So, they sent me to a home for kids — kind of a boarding school. I felt alone and bored, the food was terrible, and I really missed my mother. Finally, she sent for me.
The weather was different, my school was different, the country was different, but some things were still the same—I was still getting into fights. Kids picked on me about my accent, the color of my skin, my grades or whatever. I was different, still left out. It didn’t matter; I hated getting picked on, and I let them know it — with my fists. All through grades seven and eight, I was sent to the principal’s office so often that he and I became
friends. Instead of punishing me, he advised me that I should be better off using the energy I had in more positive ways and encouraged me to play football and basketball after school. He also suggested that I check out boxing — maybe I could learn to use my fists in a meaningful way instead of being on the destructive path I seemed to be headed for.

Having held the interschool (校际) story tell g championship for the past two years, I was the shining star of my school. When it came to choosing the right candidate (候选人) to participate in such competitions, I was always the first choice. Naturally, I was once again selected to represent my school in the approaching contest this year.
Upon hearing the fact that I was chosen again, my classmates and friends acknowledged that I would undoubtedly be the champion again. Consequently, I became conceited (自负的). I was so proud that I ignored the importance of practicing for the contest.
A week before the contest, my teacher Ms. Sara asked, “Selena, would you like to stand in front of the class to rehearse (排练) for the contest ” She had tutored me in the past two competitions and knew how important practice was. “Just imagine you are on the stage
in the audience,” she added.
“I’m sorry, Ms. Sara,” I replied. “I have a bit of a sore throat.”
This was usually the lie I would tell whenever my teacher requested me to practice in front of the class. I always found excuses to avoid doing it because I believed that I was the best and therefore the practice was unnecessary. On one occasion, I event old Ms. Sara not to worry too much as I was well prepared for the contest.
In fact, I did everything but practice my script (讲稿) .I only managed to glance briefly through the story the day before the contest. As the best storyteller among the students of the local secondary schools, I was too vain to practice and expected everything to be fine.
The contest was being held in the local community hall. On the day of the contest, the hall was crowded with people. My schoolteachers and principal were there along with many of my classmates and schoolmates. I was the eighth contestant out of twenty in total. Those who spoke before me did extremely well. On seeing their fascinating and outstanding performance, I began to lose confidence in myself. My palms (手掌) sweated heavily and I started to feel nervous.
